It might seem like a long way from the elite ambiance of the opera house to the gritty atmosphere of the track, but in his biography of one of racing's most famous early jockeys, John Dizikes displays the same shrewd understanding of how culture operates in society that distinguished his Opera in America (winner of the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award).
Tod Sloan (1874-1933) launched his career in California, became a favorite with fans, and emerged as the sport's dominant rider on the East Coast. Dandified clothes and a reputation as a ladies' man were part of his appeal, but Sloan's main claim to fame was technical: he popularized the forward seat, in which a jockey crouched on the neck of the horse, an innovation that revolutionized racing and within a few years obliterated the old upright style. It was derisively called the "monkey seat" in England, where Sloan triumphed in 1899 but made enemies with his Yankee brashness and flamboyance. The English were also apprehensive about American gamblers corrupting their races. Sloan, like many riders in the more freewheeling tracks back home, was inappropriately intimate with gamblers and may well have thrown races. In any case, he certainly wagered on them. In late 1900, England's all-powerful Jockey Club informed Sloan "he need not apply for a license to ride" in 1901. His days as a jockey were over. A marvelous miniature, Yankee Doodle Dandy tells what at first blush is the story of Tod Sloan, an American jockey, who revolutionized horse racing by changing the way a jockey sat on the horse. (Prior to Sloan, riders sat comfortably on the horses back, ramrod straight. Sloan leaned forward over the horses withers, leaned over the horses neck.) His innovation initially met with jeers and scoffing from the traditional race crowd, but within less than 5 years, nearly every jockey had adopted the technique. There was no arguing with Sloan's success. Winning two, three, four and even five races at tracks featuring an average of seven races daily, Sloan's new technique, coupled with his remarkable sense of pace and often brilliant strategies, was unstoppable.
By following Tod Sloan's career we are given a vivid tour of the U.S. and England in the latter 19th century, from the life of the lowliest stableboy, to glimpses of the English royalty. We also witness the last gasp of British "imperialism" in its Jockey Club barring Sloan from ever applying for his license again. You may not know who Tod Sloan was, but after reading _Yankee Doodle Dandy: The Life and Times of Tod Sloan_ (Yale University Press) by John Dizikes, you will understand that Sloan was as important to his sport as Babe Ruth was to his. You don't have to be a racing fan to enjoy this book; it is full of racing, but it is full of history and many Gilded Age politicos and capitalists wander through its pages. It covers the rise and fall of Sloan, who introduced the way we all have seen jockeys riding their mounts, forward on the saddles, almost hugging their necks. Before Sloan invented this position, all rode back in the saddle and upright. Sloan introduced the "forward seat," and he won with it, causing a revolution in racing. Many didn't like the new style, but took to it when it won. Many didn't like Sloan. He became a crowd pleaser, and his dandified dress in miniature, his constantly smoking a cigar "as big as a policeman's club," his inability to let others take the tab, and his eagerness with women made him a star of the sport.
Sloan's success was not just due to his gimmick. He was a skilled jockey. He was known for quick starts and blazing finishes. His judgement of pace was unequalled. Horses that had not performed well would succeed under his control. They knew his voice; a trainer said, "When Sloan enters the paddock, horses that he has ridden recognize his voice and turn to look at him."
But Sloan made such a spectacle of himself that he was resented by some members of the British racing establishment, even though he had occasionally been tapped by the Prince of Wales to ride royal mounts. A minor betting incident, not a big deal at the time, led to his being exiled from the sport he had revolutionized. Sadly, his drinking and gambling ruined his two marriages and any business prospects, and he would up as a ticket taker at a race track in Tijuana.
Dizikes's readable book is a beguiling history of racing as it used to be, illuminating a good deal about the history of racing, and the attempts to regulate it, and make it fair. It also is a little parable about what can happen to revolutionaries.

If you want to cook, buy the paperback edition of "The Joy of Cooking" (JoC) and low and behold, your cooking will improve. JoC is a recipe book, but as you work through it you learn principals for cooking that are widely applicable.
If you want to be in quantfin you need to buy The Complee Book of Option Pricing Formulas: it is the "Joy of Cooking" for options. As you work through the collection, the formulas, and look at the code (on a wonderful CDROM) low and behold you'll get better at all principals, concepts, and conceptions on how code works for option pricing formulas.
A word about errors: even critical editions of long-dead authors have errors in them, just look at the "errata" sheets from The Library of America critical editions.
For the first edition Espen Haug put his errata sheet immediately up on his website, and it also is widely available with a simple GOOGLE search (lots of people have copies on the various quant fin discussion boards). 10 seconds extra work versus whining away about how something isn't perfect? Oh, grow up. You rationally will be spending that much extra time on learning this code and digesting material in this book anyway.

It's not expensive and almost complete. Don't show the Greeks' formulas, which is very important for practitioners.

I have been using this book for many years now and it is absolutely fantastic. This book is useful for practical users as a first step towards option pricing. This book is not intented for critical analysis and derivation of the formulas (there are a zillion research papers for that). I like the approach of the book. It keeps it simple - input parameters, formula, result. It has many examples which helps me to calibrate my results.
Bottom line - if you have a PhD and strong math background read the source literature and research papers. For the rest of us this is "the" book.
Nice idea, but MANY errors.......2004-07-28
This book is the "standard" for providing straightforward code demonstrating various options pricing techniques, and perhaps deservedly so -- after all, it really doesn't have too many competitors in that niche. However, even in the course of the fairly straightforward applications I've had for this book (mostly simple equity Cox-Ross and Black-Scholes modeling), I've been shocked by the number of blatant mathematical errors (in the formulas for rho with distinct carry and risk-free rates, for instance). Clearly, the author and editors didn't bother to spend much time verifying that the formulas they cite are actually correct. (I'm actually shocked to see a fellow reviewer praise the "proofreading" -- I'm guessing he or she never actually had to use any of the formulas in this book!)
Bottom line -- if you're looking for a handy, compact reference of option pricing formulas, this is probably what you'll end up with. But be careful. It is SO frustrating to spend hours trying to figure out where you made a mistake in implementing one of these models, only to learn that you DIDN'T make a mistake -- the mistake was in your source. Consider yourself warned...

If you work any job in America, Ted Kennedy has in some way touched your life. From maternity leave, to FMLA, to short term, to safety precautions in the workplace, Senator Kennedy has placed his stamp on all of those things that we take for granted. Nowhere has anyone mentioned the improvements on America that the great Senator has spearheaded. You know why? Because Limbaugh hasn't given you automatons this opinion, so you don't have it. How come no one has mentioned that Laura Bush pulled almost the exact same trick ("accidental" vehicular homicide on her EX-BOYFRIEND)with no consequence? Where's her book? Turn off Rush and watch C-SPAN and you'll see what a great man Senator Kennedy is.
Was Ted in the car?;.......2006-05-13
I attended a Haloween party in 1969, and a fellow guest told me this story, that he heard from Kenny O'Donnell, aide to the late President Kennedy: Ted was in the car with another woman (not one of the boiler room girls). When Ted saw a police car, he stopped, got out of the car to hide, and told the woman to drive the car over the Dike Bridge and he would meet her on the other side. Neither knew that Mary Jo was passed out in the back seat. When the woman drove the car into Poucha Pond (due the bend in the bridge), she escaped, was taken off Chappy and left the Island.
Ted established his alibi at about 2 am, and didn't find out about Mary Jo's death until the car was pulled from the water around 10 am the next day.
This story has always made more sense than the diving heroics tale. The coverup was to prevent the public knowing about "the other woman". And wasn't a wooden purse, not Mary Jo's, found in the front seat floor?

The people in Massachusetts who overlook the real Teddy are every bit as guilty as the jury who knowingly set O.J. Simpson free. Teddy has neither conscience nor soul. On a warm July night in 1969, Teddy had been drinking heavily, demanded the car keys from his chauffeur, and took Mary Jo for a one-way ride. He drove off a bridge he shouldn't have been on, but managed to escape. Mary Jo was not so fortunate. Ten hours later, he essentially blamed her death on Gargan and Markham. Teddy didn't even have a valid driver's license, but voila!...the next morning it WAS valid. Teddy's reputation for over four decades has been well-chronicled: an academic fraud, a philanderer, a cheat, a drunk, a liar, a charlatan, and a political hack. As recently as 1987, he was caught flagrante dilecto with a woman half his age in a taxpayer-funded building. Yet voters in the great Commonwealth of Massachussets continue to reward this elitist monster. The jury in the Simpson trial acquiesced to intellectual dishonesty. Massachussets voters are doing precisely the same every time they cast a vote for Teddy.

I have known about this book for many years. I was reminded of it's existance watching the senior senator from Mass. vilifying ther presidents' nominees for the court.Truly a fascinating read.All of the confusing, conflicting details known about the events make perfect sense, if not perfect justice.
I can only say that Uncle Keg has a point when he decries a legal system that is different for the rich and powerful. As this concise little book documents nobody can expound this point with more personal certainty than can EMK.

My forebears travelled on the White Diamond Line's 'SS Washington Irving' - the very same vessel that carried one Patrick Kennedy to Boston Harbour in 1849. Fortunately, they travelled on its voyage to Australia - I say fortunately, because I could not bear to think of them being in such close proximity to such a harbinger of doom and destruction. If you are a Third Reich collector or have an interest in the winners of the Knight's Cross, then THIS book is for you! Arranged nicely with excellent information on the almost 7000 winners of Germany's highest decoration for bravery! The book is not a biography of the winners but you will know from the preeminent reference on the subject, who and when awards were given. I recommend this book highly!

Like many kids fortunate enough to spend summers by the shore, writer/journalist Richard Adams Carey grew up with a healthy respect for fishermen and the sea, "a world of astonishing color and shape and texture, of surprise and a perceptible knife-edge of menace." During the '90s, when headlines described the demise of New England's small-boat family fishermen, he decided to head back to Cape Cod to learn what he could about a threatened way of life and the forces--political, commercial, ecological--which imperil the survival of the fish the industry depends on. To this end, he spent a year working alongside four veterans of the Cape's inshore waters: a crewmate on a dragger (a boat that catches groundfish with a dragnet towed along the ocean bottom); a lobsterman; a long-liner (who sets quarter-mile or longer fishing lines sporting baited hooks every three feet); and a quahog dredger (essentially a clammer who harvests in bulk). Fantastick!.......2006-02-19
I gave this book to my husband who enjoyed this book immensly! He the "old fisherman" who used to fish out of Cape Cod and New Bedford, Woods Hole, all the way up to Maine, back in the old days before these new fishing regulations, said this book brought back fond memories of fishing and those long gone days.. Some of the people mentioned in this book were friends of his. The book is very well written and is a picture of the fishing industry, what it was and what it is today. Highly recommended to anyone interested in this subject.

This is going to be short. After having read "Living On The Edge" I thought I was getting another tale of life as a fisherman.Instead, what I got was life as a fisherman at town council meetings. The book is currently being used under the short leg of my pool table. ...
Better subtitle "Death of the New England Fisherman"?.......2000-04-18
Being a New England fisherman (hehe-rather, woman) I found the day-to-day lives of the fisherman very interesting-who knew scallops had blue eyes? However, I had a difficult time following the time frame of events because of the way Mr. Carey jumped around. I couldn't even tell exactly what year this book was taking place without some re-reading. The politics involved are sickening in the amount of time wasted and the fact that the committees could get nothing accomplished, evidenced with the ongoing cod crisis in New England today. Too bad none of the politicians involved happened to read this book.
An excellent inside look at the Commercial Fishing Industry........1999-10-08
If you read The Perfect Storm and came away wanting to know more about the commercial fishing industry, this is the book. Carey explains the views of the men and women who risk life, limb, and fortune in the waters off Cape Cod. He also explains the tedium of public hearings and governmental rule making which impact the lives of the fishermen.
I spent the summer in a rented house overlooking the commercial fishing fleet in Bodega Bay, California. I often wondered what happened on those boats once they left the harbor, and what regulations governed them. Against the Tide explains it all.
By way of criticism, I found the characters a bit hard to follow and the discussions of the regulations a bit tedious, but overall I learned a lot.
An enlightening look at a fading industry........1999-10-02
Richard Adams Carey has crafted a detailed look at a failing industry and a very well written narrative.
