A delightful collection of stories starting with the first Nicholas and Alexandra in 1817, winding it's way to a story about the Tsesarevich Alexei. Many lesser known members of the Imperial Family are here, many who are quite interesting in and of themselves!

Zeepvat didn't write anything short of an amazing book on the 19th century Romanovs. She really got into the intimate details of family life as well as writing of their political role. A must read book for all Romanov fans!

Very well written series of 'short stories' of different members of the Russian royal family at the turn of the 19th century, some obscure and not normally written about, which I found very refreshing. I am an avid collector of historical biographies, Russian royal family especially, but I have never seen such a comprehensive exploration of the Romanovs. Quite a few pictures I had not seen before also. All in all a great investment, and a very good read.

This book goes way beyond the normal stories of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna. Charlotte Zeepvat leads us through the personalities in the Romanov family, and what part they played in imperial Russia and its downfall. Through these biographies the reader can understand the slide from a united family to the rival factions that partly brought about the Revolution and its aftermath. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever wondered about the imperial house of Russia , and the fate that awaited them.

A Romanov Tapestry.......2002-11-13

This is a well written book that covers the last century of the Russian Romanov dynasty.

The author has chosen a wide focus rather than a narrow one on Nicholas II and Alexandra. For once we get to meet the other family memebers, learn about their personalities and what events shaped their lives and the fate of the dynasty.

We also get to read in detail about the various palaces and estates the family used. These are often referred to in other books without any real background information on their history or importance to the family being described. This book fills that vacume.

If you know nothing about the Romanovs this is a fantastic place to start as all these people's live stories weave in and out of each other to create an amazing and true story.

Great Stratigic guide for those who can't realize that you must stay close to cover etc.

Not bad, but difficult to find what you're looking for.......1999-04-15

I was a little thrown off by the author's admission that he never really sat down to play the game until he was offered the chance to write this book. (This was before he became the lead man for the X-Com series) My initial thought was that it should have been written by someone who had played and loved the game since the beginning. That aside, he did a decent job.

However, having played the game for several years before reading this book, I found that I had difficulties in locating the information I wanted. Some of the tables and charts that seem like they should be grouped together are spread out - thus making me hunt for them.

As for the content of the book itself, it has *nearly* everything you could ask for. The small amount of expert advice in the back may or may not be useful but it is the only strategy tips available, and I noticed a few errors thoughout the book (nothing major, however). At times I find that a lot of pages go by before some useful information turns up. Too much talk about what the game is doing and not enough strategy tips for my tastes. I don't think the book needs to be as thick as it is.

Bottom line: The info is in there. Sifting the proverbial wheat out of the chaff is another thing altogether.

Anyone faced with the daunting task of implementing a document management system or any other large project will find that Designing a Document Strategy provides the critical tools necessary for creating a viable strategy. Author Kevin Craine delivers what he says is needed most -- "...a process to guide the development of your strategy so that it is meaningful, practical, and ensures worthwhile and lasting results." Designing a Document Strategy provides the framework and guidelines for that process, breaking it down to principles that can be applied to any information management project.

Using a conversational style that simplifies difficult concepts, Craine explains the importance of looking at documents as both strategic and tactical. He also describes how information assets, when they are used strategically, enable organizations to reap the benefits of increased revenue, decreased costs, and increased customer satisfaction.

Craine begins with a historical perspective of the importance of managing documents and how documents form the basis for most communications. Following is an overview of how the document strategy model must be molded to meet the needs of its users and organization. Craine emphasizes the importance of examining the types of documents created and the indivictuals who use them before looking at technological solutions.

Chapters Three and Four help readers make a baseline assessment of their current document environment in the context of their organizations' current business mission, goals, and vision and to evaluate it so that the "pain points" can be discovered. The author stresses concentrating on the lifecycle of documents as a basis for the analysis and investigation. While this book does not begin to explore all of the current document management applications available, it gives pointers about how to discover current technological trends. Finally, the author helps the reader identify the different document constituencies and how those information owners and stakeholders can impact the overall success of the plan.

In the next chapter, Craine describes various tools for determining current issues and formulating possible solutions. He does a good job of explaining how flow charts can be used effectively to help sort out issues that can be impediments to a successful document strategy.

Selling the strategy and managing the resulting change are always challenging. Craine's chapter on these topics walks the reader through presenting a proposal, including how to present a cost/benefit analysis. As part of that discussion, he explains the different accounting methods used to demonstrate cost/benefit and provides the formula for setting up an Excel spreadsheet. Assuming approval of the project, the second half of the chapter explains how the change process works and the manager's role within that process. Since implementing a document strategy will involve modifications in process, it is important to understand the psyche of change and how individual employees and an organization's culture can respond to change. Craine gives an overview of the potential and tactics that can be used to bring down these barriers.

In Chapter Seven, "Project Planning and Implementation," Craine provides an easy-to-understand overview of this critical process, providing for both novices and seasoned project management veterans the basic considerations and key elements needed to ensure success. Examples of how to write effective project statements and action plans are given, and useful guidelines on how to manage time, resources, and materials are discussed. Craine emphasizes here that throughout the project, the manager must continue to focus on the baseline analysis and investigation because these provide the means for measuring the success of the strategy. He closes with a discussion of practical ways to communicate the success of the project to sponsors and co-workers and of issues to consider at the time the final product is turned over to users. This chapter is not a primer on project management, but it provides the fundamentals to get readers well on their way.

Each chapter builds upon the previous one and provides meaningful examples of the concepts being explained, including case studies and questions that can be used as a checklist throughout the planning and implementation process. The only disappointing aspect of the book is that the author does not specifically mention the value that records and information professionals can add to the process.

Designing a Document Strategy is not a detailed treatise on project management or a detailed technological expose. However, in 166 pages this book provides information professionals with an easy-to-read and easyto-understand primer on how to develop a document strategy that can be used to achieve the goals of any information management project.

This book is a great resource for those of us in the information and document processing industry. It is put together in such a way as to walk you through a methodology that is complete, well rounded, and ultimately...profitable. Kevin Craine has done a good job applying techniques and methods from proven areas of business strategy development and casting them with a "document focus." The result is a practical reference, plus added thoughts and insights that make you think, ponder and act.

Typical 'hip' chick lit.......2007-09-25

Eeek gads, I am so sick of these chick lit "heroines" all being a slight variation of the same woman. They all have loads of time to meet all of their fabulous friends for girl talk over red wine, all being fabulously dressed and fabulously "hip." Oh, but before you think they are just your typical modern gal, they all have these little "quirks" that make them so absolutely adorable to the opposite sex. Gag me.

The only difference with THIS heroine is, she gets knocked up. She drunkenly begs her fiance to.....stay inside, and bang!--she's with child. So, we're supposed to think that accidentally getting preggers at the age of 30, while drunk, and then oh-so-cutely being all "quirky" about how un-motherly she is, makes her this hip gal that we're supposed to regard as cool....and "quirky." Uh huh.

I will wait for the day when a woman actually writes about a heroine who's responsible, truly quirky, and not just pretending to be "quirky", and does more with her life than hang out at uber-cool bars drinking red wine with her couture-dressed friends, obsessing about why this guy doesn't like her or about how she needs to stay fitting into those size 2's. How's THAT for quirkiness??

This book is sooo cute! I've never been pregnant,but now I know what to expect if it ever happens. I like how the other was so frank and honest. She didn't claim to have a perfect pregnancy-she still had work,friends, and the fiance to deal with. I let a co-worker who is in her first trimester borrow it, and she loved it.

This book is so awful. I seriously think the good reviews on here are written by the author's friends. The best comparison I can make is this must be what Britney Spears is like pregnant. If you like that kind of thing, go for it. Otherwise save your money and your time. If you are looking for fun pregnancy books try the Girlfriend's guides. A great book about the experience of having a baby is Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott.

Knocked Up.......2007-07-16

Being that I am pregnant, I wantd to a good laugh or at least something light about pregnancy. The book kept me entertained. I found it odd how completely clueless and selfish the author was about her own pregnancy but enjoyed how open and honest she was about her experiences. I think this is worth a read if you are pregnant. If anything, you'll feel like your doing or did a great job at protecting your baby.
