Encouraging and.......1999-11-08
The text is very honest and encouraging. Was recommended to me by a Roman Catholic priest. The book makes life as a priest sounds exciting. Lots of good advice for discernment and life in general from first hand experience. Shows that obedience and celibacy are blessings to welcome. I most definitly agree with the publisher's review. It offers reasons to become a priest and reasons to stay a priest. As a young man myself, it offers an appealing alternitive lifestyle. Only complaint: there were no "simple" parish priests. All were truly extraordinary, as the title implies, however, I would have liked to read about a priest who is happy with one role in the Church - pastor of a parish without the additional responsibilities of vicar, vocations director, etc. However, it does remind us that priests are called to fill multiple roles in the Church at one time. Truly an uplifiting book and definitly recommended for anyone who wants to understand the Priestly ministry more fully. Example advice from the text: If you are too busy to pray, you are too busy. I know that is advice I need to follow. I hope for similar books in the future.
A compelling compendium of lives of unique service........1999-08-20
If you have come to believe the Catholic Priesthood is about to become part of the dustbin of history, then reading this book may cause you to think again. This is a refreshing and inspiring look at 33 men who are living lives that are personally satisfying and which bring a dimension of service to the world which is diffferent from any other. Particularly interesting are the differing, yet singular threads which run through the stories related. This is well worth reading.
A celebration of priesthood!.......1999-01-29
A very inspirational account of men who are happy with their vocation to the Roman Catholic priesthood. It is a welcome breath of fresh air in contrast to so many other books which proclaim priesthood in a negative light (and wrongly so!). In this book you will encounter men who have struggled, men who have had fascinating experiences, men who have rejoiced, both young and old. I would recommend this book for any priest, seminarian, or for anyone considerding a vocation to the priesthood, as well as for those who feel that priesthood is dead! It is not! Read about these extraordinary lives!

Book Description
Shohei Imamura is among the most important artists of postwar Japanese cinema. Best known in the west for his award-winning The Ballad of Narayama, Imamura has produced a body of work that is unequalled for its tumultuous energy and formal daring. A dozen essays by such eminent authorities of Japanese cinema as Donald Richie, Max Tessier and Audie Bock are supplemented by interviews with and articles by Imamura, which explore his influences, themes and working methods.
Published by Cinematheque Ontario. Distributed in Canada by Wilfrid Laurier University Press. Distributed outside Canada by Indiana University Press.
Customer Reviews:
A thorough waste of time.......2007-08-26
A pointless, ponderous collection of insipid essays and middling interviews pertaining to Japanese film's most daring postwar realist. Worthwhile published material on Imamura was available only in Japanese- and French-language sources before this was published, and that much hasn't changed.
The interviews with Imamura are fair but unexceptional; better can be found online. Most of the essays consist of witless, ignorant speculation regarding his films, and of course, the tired old tropes concerning Imamura's themes and subject matter are pounded into the ground, AGAIN. Almost nothing in this book concerns itself with Imamura's filming techniques or narrative innovations. Since this was published ten years ago to coincide with the release of "Unagi," don't expect to read anything about Imamura's last two features. This is slightly more informative than anything available at Midnight Eye - that's how bad it is.
If you want to learn more about Imamura from printed materials, I recommend that you learn how to read Japanese or French.
The only thing that pleases me about this book is that it's out of print. The second star is only granted for Imamura's interesting articles and lively answers to some boring, typical interview questions.

E-mail is today's most powerful marketing medium. It is also the most misunderstood. This dynamic book dispenses with incomprehensible theories and conflicting rules to explore real-life examples of e-mail campaign successes and failures -- explaining exactly why each soared or sank.
Over-mailing * Under-testing * Poorly constructed messages * Effective E-Mail Marketing shows marketers how to avoid these and hundreds of other problems, and how to craft messages that build rapport -- and sales -- to consumers worldwide. All marketers using the Web will want to look here first to learn the truth about:
* Adapting mass-market messages to this one-to-one medium * Strategies for increasing mailing frequency without increasing "opt-outs" * Techniques that reach through the screen to grab the reader * Words and phrases that drive response -- and those that guarantee rejection
At last, a book full of hard-boiled e-marketing tips to replace unproven theories!
Customer Reviews:
Effective Email Marketing.......2005-09-08
Being a novice in the marketing side of a publication, I have found Effective Email Marketing a very valuable tool. I would recommend to anyone.
What is that smell???.......2004-11-27
An e-mail appears in your Inbox. The subject says: "$5,000 Diet Challenge!" The message body starts out, "Hi! My name is Betty Wilson. I got your e-mail address off a post." The message is bulk-addressed to a group of 10 AOL recipients (of which you are one) that appears to have been harvested. And it seems that "Betty Wilson's" e-mail address is seye45y@mail3.blackjackhit.com.
Is there any computer user on the face of the planet whose brain isn't screaming "SPAM!!" right now and mentally reaching for the Delete key?
And yet, author Lewis holds up this flatulent piece of dreck as an exemplary e-mail that "has good text, excellent rapport, and a strong one-to-one approach." Umm...okayyyyy...and I'll bet that same excellent rapport helps if you want to sell V 1 A G R A Cheap, No Prescription Needed!!!!!!
At first, I thought he was joking when he highlighted examples like this as the type of e-mail marketing messages we should be emulating. But he's quite serious. Unfortunately, such lapses of discernment send his credibility plummeting and make it hard to separate his good advice from his bad.
He does have good advice to give, too, such as his admonition to carefully test different versions of an e-mail before blasting it out to a large list of recipients, and to measure the response and tweak the final production message accordingly.
Lewis cut his teeth on print-media direct mail marketing and a lot of the writing techniques and triggers that worked in print can be used effectively in e-mail. But today's e-mail marketing messages need to be composed much more carefully to avoid being automatically filtered out as spam -- by machine or human -- and Lewis doesn't convince me that he Gets It. His stuff doesn't pass the smell test.
Custom-tailored Comments from an Industry Guru.......2003-02-24
Lewis is a copywriting and marketing guru with over 25 books under his belt. This book is designed for the times, when so many marketers are concerned about how to get their message out by electronic mail--a lot cheaper than the alternative offered by the United States Postal Service. Benefit: at least e-mail gets through; unfortunately, a lot of bulk mail has not made it to addressees over the years.
So what's different about the electronic approach, other than the method of distribution? Don't you still need great copy and an effective target list of potential buyers?
There are a lot of similarities between electronic and postal direct mail, so you'll read chapters on words and phrases that work and don't work. You'll still get the advice on how to construct your message to grab the attention of the recipient. This immediate attention issue is even more acute with e-mail: hitting the DELETE button is a lot quicker than handling a piece of mail, opening it or not, and tossing it in the trash.
Lewis has tailored this book nicely to this new medium, exploring how to adapt to this communications vehicle without getting burned. Chapters discuss opt-ins, avoiding the "spam" accusation, and how to use the e-mail subject line most effectively. He explores how to establish rapport through e-mail, using personalization and psychology to elicit the desired response. The chapter on rich media and viral mail is certainly something you won't find in a typical marketing book.
This book is filled with medium-specific information, quelling my fear that this would be just another marketing book with "E-Mail" dropped in the front of the title. These pages are a treasure-trove of resources and tailored advice. The ten pages of tips at the end of the book supplement the tips that appear on the pages throughout the text. An abundance of examples illustrate the author's points. Indexed.
Using techniques that grab reader attention.......2002-08-08
Herschell Gordon Lewis' Effective Email Marketing tells how to avoid the common pitfalls of the typical email marketing program to focus on massmarket messages which get results. Individualization and customization are part of the keys, as well as using techniques that grab reader attention.

Riding with Pam.......2007-01-06
As I read this book, I felt like I was with Pam as she crossed Alaska. A truly well written book which gives the reader a wonderful insight into the beauty of Alaska and most of all into the human emotions of such an arduous journey. It is a book of truimph, beating all the odds!
Alone Across the Artic.......2006-08-06
Excellent true story, well told with many explanations so the reader understands what is going on.
GREAT, great story!.......2005-10-03
This is a great book that will inspire you to be a stronger, more adventursome person than you might otherwise be. I like the way the author incorporates diary entries from her expedition, and also the text inserts including helpful background information that might otherwise have bogged down the flow of the story. I bought both this (the version for adults or teens) and the companion book, Big Enough Anna, which tells the same story in a manner appropriate for young children. Both are fantastic, and I plan to give copies to friends as gifts. Way to go, Pam Flowers!!!
Hard to put down.......2005-03-03
I needed something to read during the benchmarks, so I ran to the library during passing time and grabbed the first book I could find on mushing (I'm an addicted musher). I had a hard time putting it down. The pictures were wonderful, and the story was great. It was a pretty fast read, I finished it that day, but I enjoyed it. I've reread it twice since I bought my own copy.

After Appomattox; How the South Won the War.......2001-07-05
This is one of the rare true historical accounts as to what happened after the Civil War. The testimonials by the ex-slaves give a chilling, but accurate account of what actually happened. The revisionist historians will probably frown but this is the only true account of "how the south won the war."
I need an author's biogaphy form........2000-12-31
I can write a review but actually I need an author's biography form so my husband, Stetson Kennedy, can fill it out. If you could e-mail it to him at stet_k2000@yahoo.com I will make sure he fills it out.
Reconstruction - The Revisionist Angle.......1999-12-09
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the evidence to support the assertion that despite losing the war the South was not reconstructed. I did however find that reading 31 different testimonies to the Joint Congressional Committee to be somewhat mundane. This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the history of the reconstruction and have only read the official version of these historical events.

Book Description
Is the separation of church and state a myth?
Was the United States founded as a "Christian nation"?
Religious Right organizations have launched a systematic propaganda war against the separation of church and state. Their aim is to convince the American public that church-state separation was never intended by our Founding Fathers and that the United States was founded as a Christian nation.
In this new, expanded edition, journalist Robert Boston challenges the zealots of the Religious Right and debunks their claims about church-state separation. Tracing the development of the church-state relations from the Middle Ages to the modern era, Boston shows how the principle protects religion and explains why America's founders were such ardent advocates of the idea.
Completely revised and updated, this second edition is packed with information to help activists defend church-state separation. It reviews the evolution of separation of church and state in the United States and explains, in simple and straightforward language, what the Supreme Court has really said about issues like religion in public schools, tax aid to religious institutions, and the limits of religious freedom. Boston concludes by giving readers clear strategies to defend church-state separation from Religious Right attacks.
Customer Reviews:
Good Arguments.......2007-04-09
This book provides a lot of good information on the "Moral Majority" and the Religious Right in the United States.
church-state separation.......2007-01-09
In clear, everyday language, journalist Rob Boston of Americans United for Separation of Church and State traces the origins of church-state separation from the Reformation into the present. He debunks the claims made by many on the religious right that the United States was founded as a "Christian nation," reproducing key documents and the testimony of the founding fathers. This book is a must-read for secular progressives.
Good general overview, a few small inaccuracies... 4+ stars.......2004-06-18
I found it to be a good start on the subject. Some of the dates were incorrect (typos, I'm pretty sure) and there were a few small but largely unimportant inaccuracies, such as the role of the NY State Supreme Court. In NY the final word is handed down by the Appellate Court (a somewhat understandable mistake-common sense dictates otherwise). For someone starting out with an admitted bias he does a presentable job in covering the other side of the issue, although the bias does show through. I've personally found the religious right to be much less forthcoming with opposing facts that refute their arguments.
Somewhat biased but excellent overall.......2003-11-08
In this work, Rob Boston gives a good in-depth analysis of the church state separation issue. He provides an excellent historical background including a detailed description of the drafting of the U.S. Constitution's first amendment. Prior drafts of the amendment provide very interesting reading. He correctly examines the effect of the 14th amendment that extended the Bill of Rights to the states and the fact that it was legal for states to set up religion up to that point.
Crucial Supreme Court cases are covered in detail providing excellent examinations of the opinions they generated. He points out that church state separation was virtually ignored during the 19th century and exploded as an issue when immigration during the 20th century brought a number of new religions to the country that the people had never previously encountered.
Mr. Boston does not hide his disdain for the Religious Right and it becomes very obvious in some of his statements, but he illuminates some of the dangers this small but very influential group pose. He exposes the desires of some extreme fringes to convert America into a Christian theocracy.
All in all this is a great work with thorough documentation of sources that allow a reader to research further into the issue. Mr. Boston also provides a number of historical documents in whole or in part to illustrate the mindset of the founding fathers, particularly Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
The Battle Handbook for the Defense of the First Amendment.......2003-04-11
This contents of this book helps prepare the citizen-soldier for the defense of every citizens' religious rights from the fanatical fundamentalist religious groups in America who want total control. If one can read this book without getting sick themselves, they will see how repulsive the individuals and groups are that proclaim their religious beliefs to be the only true religious beliefs; how the reader should obey their teachings; how the U. S. Government should be based on their religious beliefs.
When religious groups want to control the government and the people from inside the womb to after the grave a serious battle must occur, not just light skirmishes. This book helps the citizen-soldier get through the light skirmishes while girding themselves for the inevitable battle for personal religious rights, free from government, of all Americans.

Book Description
At the dawn of the twenty-first century, it is clear that - for the first time since the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago - changes of enormous ecological significance are occurring on our planet.
The ozone layer is beginning to disintegrate. Since 1970 the world's forests have almost halved. A quarter of the world's fish have been depleted. We live in an age of ecocide.
Seven out of ten biologists believe the world is now in the midst of the fastest mass extinction of species in the 4.5-billion-year history of the planet, according to a poll conducted by the American Museum of Natural History. Biodiversity loss is rated as a more serious environmental problem than the depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, or pollution and contamination.
How have we come to be in this situation, and what can be done to conserve our environment for the future? "Ecocide: A Short History of Mass Extinction of Species" examines the facts behind the figures to offer a disturbing account of the ecological impact that the human species has on the planet.
Franz Broswimmer takes the reader on a historical odyssey starting with the impact of premodern societies on the environment, through to the commercial exploitation of species and the large-scale habitat destruction that we see today. Broswimmer argues that in the open marketplace nature has been reduced to an assortment of exploitable resources. Focusing in particular on corporate-driven neoliberal forms of globalization, the industrial war economy and the massive increase in human population, he shows how we are wilfully destroying our world. Highlighting important counter-movements who are working for ecological democracy, this is a truly unique book that will be of interest to anyone who cares about conserving our environment for the future.
