Book Description
Examining the later twelfth- and early thirteenth-century history of the dynasty of Chernigov, this study demonstrates that the princes of Chernigov were among the most powerful in Kievan Rus'. It therefore challenges the established view of the political history of Kievan Rus'. Unlike other studies, it also examines in detail themes such as succession and inheritance, rivalries for domains, marriage alliances, the role of trade in inter-dynastic relations, nomadic incursions on Rus', and princely relations with the Church.
Download Description
Historians in pre-revolutionary Russia, in the Soviet Union, in contemporary Russia, and in the West have consistently relegated the medieval dynasty of Chernigov to a place of minor importance in Kievan Rus'. This view was reinforced by the evidence that, after the Mongols invaded Rus' in 1237, the two branches from the House of Monomakh living in the Rostov-Suzdal' and Galicia-Volyn' regions emerged as the most powerful. However, careful examination of the chronicle accounts reporting the dynasty's history during the second half of the twelfth and the first half of the thirteenth century shows that the Ol'govichi of Chernigov successfully challenged the Monomashichi for supremacy in Rus'. Through a critical analysis of the available primary sources (such as chronicles, archaeology, coins, seals, 'graffiti' in churches, and architecture) this book attempts correct the pervading erroneous view by allocating to the Ol'govichi their rightful place in the dynastic hierarchy of Kievan Rus'.

Book Description
This is not your ordinary audio book! It's another collection of stories from Smokey Yunick's autobiography:
Best Damn Garage in Town.
Smokey Yunick, the world's most famous mechanic, accomplished more in one life than most people could in five. He flew 50 missions as a B-17 pilot in WWII. He was an integral part of the birth of stock car racing and ran open wheel cars during the glory days of the Indy 500. He spent years in the jungles of Ecuador and held 10 U.S. patents. Smokey was concerned for the future, so he developed more efficient and powerful engines for passenger cars and safer crash barriers for race tracks. These are the real stories of racing and everything automotive in America told by someone who was there every step of the way!
To add to the fun we had people from all around racing read Smokey's stories. And while they were at it, we asked them to give you their thoughts on Smokey you won't believe what they had to say!

Book Description
The stories in Sex, Lies & Superspeedways comprise about 20% of the stories in Smokey's autobiography: Best Damn Garage in TownÉThe World According to Smokey. It was originally published as a 3 Volume boxed set with slipcase, with 1,100 pages, 409 photographs and illustrations, all black and white, weighs 11 pounds, indexed.
Smokey got the idea for writing a history of stock car racing after giving a talk to explain racing to a group of kids at LoweÕs Motorspeedway, around 1995. He realized that all the people who were a part of the early days were dying and most of the ones who were still alive were too involved with racing to be able to tell the real stories. He started writing this book as a history of stock car racing and ended up with look at American history of the past 60 years through a very unique set of eyes.
The first volume, WalkinÕ Under a SnakeÕs Belly, covers SmokeyÕs life outside racing, beginning with growing up in Neshaminy, Pennsylvania on a farm, dropping out of high school to take care of the family and going off to World War II as a B-17 pilot. The war stories are told through the eyes of a young man who believed all that the Army Air Corps taught him, but he had a mind of his own and was also hell-bent on having fun at all costs. (If that meant irritating a few generals, then that was just par for the course.)
After the racing years, Smokey ended spending most of his time working on his inventions and working in the oil and gold fields of Ecuador. Along the way, Smokey had a knack for finding fun and adventure everywhere he went. Alcohol, women and speed were his main addictions - he eventually gave up alcohol, but never did give up the other two.
The second volume, All Right You Sons-a-Bitches, LetÕs Have a Race, chronicles the stock car racing years in living color. The warning on these books, that they are not to be read by those under 18 unless they are with a grandparent who can translate the social and moral implications of the stories, is not to be taken lightly. (Smokey even includes his own dictionary to explain the terms that racers used in the early days to the uninformed.) Smokey and his band of merry compatriots were racers and there were only two things on their mind when the sun went down Ð women and booze. Smokey had his share of both during 15 years of racing, when racers were looked down on as the dregs of society. Nothing could stop his dream of being the fastest at the sport he loved, no matter what happened along the way Ð the sign of a true racer.
During his years in stock car racing, Smokey fell in love with a mistress that he would visit every May for over 20 years Ð The Indianapolis 500. The first half of the third volume, LiÕl Skinny Rule Book, covers his love of this famed event and the wonderful stories of the days before the big corporate sponsors; when it was just men and their machines, sleeping on the floor in the garage and most times coming home with nothing. As the title implies, Smokey loved Indy because the rules were so simple. His inventive mind and knack for thinking way outside the box were at their best when Indy was involved.
The second half of the third volume, EatinÕ an Elephant, covers his years of inventing inside and outside of racing. SmokeyÕs 10 patents donÕt begin to cover the breadth and depth of his inventing. His work with the car companies and on the racetrack led to a host of developments that have improved surface transportation for everyone. The value of some of his ideas and inventions, like his famous hot vapor engine, were never fully realized.
Many books have been written about the last 50 years of American history, but few are this entertaining, revealing and introspective all at the same time. Real stories from World War II, stock cars, the automotive industry and the Mexican Road Race are just a few of the elements in SmokeyÕs autobiography. They combine to make Best Damn Garage in TownÉThe World According to Smo

Probably the most useful supplemental D&D book........2007-08-29
My D&D group bought the Feats book a long time ago when we were just starting and we have been fighting over it ever since. It has been one of the most useful books in our collection and recently I ordered it on here just so I'd have my own copy.
Well worth the buy. Inexpensive and infinitely useful.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and inspiring.......2004-12-28
This book shares inspiring lessons for people in all fields who are interested in rediscovering how to think out-of-the-box and to learn and live more completely. The real focus is on finding our sense of wonder, curiosity, and playfulness and putting them to work in our companies and organizations. The author does a simple but powerful job of presenting a set of talents we all had naturally as children and teaching us how to get them back after years of school and work have literally sucked them out of us. And, he gives clear and concrete examples of organizations that are tapping these talents successfully and great exercises to get leaders and employees at all levels started. This book has inspired me to be more creative in my job and in all other aspects of my life. This book really ROCKS! A definite winner!
Lessons from the Sandbox.......2001-03-16
This is a truly inspiring book on creativity. Thank God it is not a rehash of all the other books on bringing innovation into the work world. It doesn't offer insipid phrases like, "out-of-the-box thinking," or, "doing more with less." Nor does it contain those warn out "gimmicks" like the connect the nine dots with four straight lines routine. What it does offer, is wisdom -- our own!
Dr. Gregerman's prose, metaphors, and humor inspires us to rediscover and apply our wisdom in creativity in solving our thorniest organizational challenges. He takes us through the minds and spirit of young children in helping us understand and remember how minds that are not encumbered by past experience forge new possibilities through imagination.
As I was reading Lessons from the Sandbox, I was constantly reminded of the importance of (unencumbered) imagination, a critical rule for Albert Einstein. Einstein wrote, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination." In Dr. Gregerman's mind, adults have created "boxes" through the filters they have acquired through both experience and their current surroundings. Children are not encumbered with these filters, and thus we can learn from their outlook on how the world works. It has been said that children enter schools as question marks and wonder, and leave as periods and right answer machines. Lessons from the Sandbox clearly underscore this insight.
Dr. Gregerman has organized his book using thirteen "gifts" of childhood to re-ignite the creative sprit for people in the business world. These lessons range from the gifts of focus, urgency, wonder, questioning, and participation.
I have read many business books on creativity, and none have sparked my imagination as Lessons from the Sandbox. It has brought me laughter, recaptured the lessons I learned from my own childhood, and I have profited from the ideas I have already generated as a result of this gem of a book. - Bob Bookman, President, Team Productivity Programs, Inc.
Lost your creativity? You will find it here!.......2000-08-24
Alan Gregerman has struck a forgotten place, way back in childhood, when we used to have a lot of fun with whatever we did. In his book, Lessons form the Sandbox, he reminds us of what is important in life and work; tapping into our least used resource, our creative mind. He also reminds us that, tragically, we begin to loose our creativity when we are very young, bombarded with structure and other peoples ideas of what is important, like following all the rules . What can companies learn from the heads of small children? Plenty! Lessons from the Sandbox is a wonderful ride through the new world of business and an absolute gold mine of fresh ideas and straightforward wisdom about what it takes to create a greater sense of energy and excitement for customers, employees, and partners. This is one of the few business books I've read that not only challenges you to use more of your brain, but delivers practical guidance for improving the performance of your people and your balance sheet. Pick any chapter and be prepared to laugh, smile, dream a little, and even re-live your own childhood. Then roll up your sleeves and get to work putting his great ideas to the test. Want to learn how to focus, come up with better ideas, asking the right questions, or be more enthusiastic? It's all here and impossible to put down.
A Lesson for Everyone.......2000-07-17
This book takes a refreshing look at life, redefining the mundaneness of business-as-usual. Many of us have forgotten the power of imagination and curiosity we have as children. This book helps working adults use simplicity as a starting point in their own work. Not only is it okay to ask simple questions such as "how?" or "why?", but healthy. The overlap between parenthood and business inspires rejuvenating energy if we take the time to look at the gifts of childhood as Dr. Gregerman does.
A delightful primer.......2000-05-05
Alan Gregerman has a wonderful way of reminding us of the valuable lessons we learned long ago. With clear words and poignant examples, he underscores how we can draw on our early hertage of wonder, enthusiasm, participation, and other traits to be more successful --- and happier --- in business and our personal lives. Lessons from the Sandbox is well worth the read.

This collection of diaries gives readers a powerful, firsthand look at the effects of the Pacific War on eight ordinary Japanese. Immediate, vivid, and at times surprisingly frank, the diaries chronicle the last years of the war and its aftermath as experienced by a navy kamikaze pilot, an army straggler on Okinawa, an elderly Kyoto businessman, a Tokyo housewife, a young working woman in Tokyo, a teenage girl mobilized for war work, and two schoolchildren evacuated to the countryside. Samuel Yamashita's introduction provides a helpful overview of the historiography on wartime Japan and offers valuable insights into the important, everyday issues that concerned Japanese during a different and disastrously difficult time.

Four examples of great leadership .......2004-11-01
Lincoln, Clemenceau, Churchill and Ben- Gurion's stories are told in this work, especially in regard to their relation to the military under their command. All four were strong leaders who focused in war on military victory but did not allow themselves to become subordinate to or enslaved by their military leaders. All four had the great ability to concentrate on the ultimate goal, and put all their force behind it to achieve it. They too showed an ability to listen to and learn from subordinates. And as leaders of their respective nations knew how to inspire others to follow them. Cohen's study is magnificently insightful, always interesting , filled with understanding of the complexities of democratic rule. It will be of great value and great pleasure especially to those who take interest in military and political affairs.

Customer Reviews:
Dr. John Coleman books.......2002-03-26
More than anything---Americans suffer from a lack of knowledge about what's going on in our world. If you think you are aware by watching from a US news media standpoint, you'd better think again! There is no hope of catching up without some very basic books. These include all of Dr. John Coleman's series: One World Order, Committee of 300, Diplomacy by Deception and What you need to know about the Constitution. He lays the best foundation to begin your quest for information. Most of the popular writers and seekers of truth have taken no small share of developments originally presented by Coleman. But here is the original deal. You don't need to accept substitutes.
I recommend that everyone read this book and all the others because there has never been a need for facts, as great as the need we face today and we are very quickly running out of time to do anything about these events. Therefore, it's very important to know where to look for answers. John Coleman was an insider (British MI6) who was shocked by events he uncovered as an intelligence officer. He has dedicated his life to exposing his knowledge of events most Americans are simply unaware happened. His research is impeccable. I sincerely doubt that the last reviewer even read this book. Those who don't want the truth to be known would really hate this book. Unfortunately, there are quite a few folks out there that would like to remain blissfully ignorant. To each his own...This is a book that belongs in your special library of valuable non-fiction. Again, it lays a basic foundation and unique perspective on world events. The knowledge you will gain is one that explains the necessary details, you need to know because they have a direct impact on current events. This book will give you a much better perspective. So, don't just sit there, buy it....
"POOR SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE BY THE AUTHOR".......2000-06-02
In John Coleman`s book The Committee of 300, his publisher has book advertisements for some occultic topics; the worst being Nostradamus. Nostradamus constantly used astrology,as verified in his book preface in "The Centuries". If a reader wants to know more about whats going on,by a Christian source, might I recomend Dennis L. Cuddy`s book" Secret Records Revealed ",or Joan Veon books. Both very strong Christian authors.

It says something of modern times that a new branch of science should have had to come into being: "invasion biology." A flourishing division of conservation biology and ecology, invasion biology studies the ever-increasing introduction of alien species into new environments--the Chinese vine kudzu in the American South, for example, or the brown tree snake in Guam--where they rapidly displace native species and upset local balances of nature.
French scientist Alexandre Meinesz reports firsthand on his work in invasion biology in Killer Algae, a grim and frightening book. In it, Meinesz recounts a seemingly innocent transaction that has had appalling consequences. In 1980, a curator at the city zoo in Stuttgart, Germany, introduced a hybrid, cold-resistant variety of the alga Caulerpa taxifolia into the zoo's aquarium, where it proved to be a productive source of food. Encouraged, the curator sent a sample to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, then headed by Jacques Cousteau. During a routine cleaning of aquarium tanks, a quantity of Caulerpa was dumped into the Mediterranean Sea. Meinesz, an expert on the alga, was called onto the scene when a museum worker noticed, some days later, that a mere bucketful had grown to cover a square yard. He suggested that the alga be removed, but his suggestion went unheeded. Now, nearly two decades later, the "beautiful stranger," as Meinesz calls it, has spread throughout the Mediterranean basin, covering some 10,000 acres and displacing native algae as it spreads. The result may be a wholesale remaking of the Mediterranean environment, already long victimized. Meinesz's sobering tale speaks much to the fragility of ecosystems--and to the short-sightedness of humans. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Two decades ago, a Stuttgart zoo imported a lush, bright green seaweed for its aquarium. Caulerpa taxifolia was captively bred by the zoo and exposed, for years, to chemicals and ultraviolet light. Eventually a sample of it found its way to the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, then headed by Jacques Cousteau. Fifteen years ago, while cleaning its tanks, that museum dumped the pretty green plant into the Mediterranean.
This supposedly benign little plant—that no one thought could survive the waters of the Mediterranean—has now become a pernicious force. Caulerpa taxifolia now covers 10,000 acres of the coasts of France, Spain, Italy, and Croatia, and has devastated the Mediterranean ecosystem. And it continues to grow, unstoppable and toxic. When Alexandre Meinesz, a professor of biology at the University of Nice, discovered a square-yard patch of it in 1984, he warned biologists and oceanographers of the potential species invasion. His calls went unheeded. At that point, one person could have pulled the small patch out and ended the problem. Now, however, the plant has defeated the French Navy, thwarted scientific efforts to halt its rampage, and continues its destructive journey into the Adriatic Sea.
Killer Algae is the biological and political horror story of this invasion. For despite Meinesz's pleas to scientists and the French government, no agency was willing to take responsibility for the seaweed, and while the buck was passed, the killer algae grew. And through it all, the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco sought to exculpate itself. In short, Killer Algae—part detective story and part bureaucratic object lesson—is a classic case of a devastating ecological invasion and how not to deal with it.
"[U]tterly fascinating, not only because of the ecological battles [Meinesz] describes but also because of the wondrous natural phenomena involved."—Richard Bernstein, New York Times
"Akin to Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Killer Algae shows the courage of a voice in the wilderness."—Choice
"A textbook case of how not to manage an environmental disaster."—Kirkus Reviews
"Meinesz's story is a frightening one, reading more like a science fiction thriller than a scientific account."—Publishers Weekly

Highly political.......2002-05-19
This book describes how an invasive alga was released into the Mediterranean and details the political story of why it was allowed to spread. The alga, caulerpa taxiflora, was first discovered growing under the windows of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in 1989. When Meinesz saw the alga, he approached the director of the museum and was told that the alga, being tropical in nature, would never survive the winter. However, it did indeed survive the winter, flourished, and over the next few years spread beyond Monaco to the coast of France, Spain, and as far away as Croatia.
Although one section of the appendix describes the biology of the alga, the vast majority of the book is devoted to documenting the various political battles that the author fought to try to convince the authorities to take action against the spread of the alga. Some of the behind-the-scenes tales of how the academic publishing establishment works were quite illuminating. After reading this book, I will also be rather skeptical when I come across scientific articles in the popular press, especially newspapers, since Meinesz points out how often reporters got the details wrong or pulled other facts out of context. When I picked up this book, I was more interested in learning the scientific and environmental implications of an invasive species, but that's not the focus of this book.
How Bureaucracy trumped Science.......2001-01-21
This book should wake up anyone who still believes that clear scientific truth will automatically change the way that governments make decisions. Consider it the ocean-side equivalent of Halberstam's classic "The Best and the Brightest." and an excellent complement to Barbara Tuchman's "The March of Folly". Dr. Meinesz was among the few and leading French scientific voices who saw and, what's more, cared about the epidemic spread of a tropical green algae along the world's most expensive coastline - the Riviera. He shows how the famous Oceanographic Museum at Monaco not only caused the problem with its careless handling of an exotic species but how the Director's disinformation cover-up campaign spread faster than the noxious seaweed itself. And it did not help that this environmental mayhem was started under the watch of famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau (the preceding museum director). One of the most striking things one learns is how diverse and complex -- and ultimately useless -- the French bureaucracy is, that is supposed to be protecting their coastlines and marine environments. A scary story that might have done better with a more carefully chosen title!
This is a book about politics, not ecology!.......2001-01-06
The author does not try to convince the reader of the ecological threat that the algae imposes. That is now obviouse. He recounts the politics involved with this ecological crisis. There is a historical record of a failure in a system composed of government officials and agencies, and reputable scientific circles. First, the governmental agencies failed to recognize the problem. The "wait and see" attitude that is described shows a certain apathy or indolence of bureaucratic agencies. There is a failure in the practic of science to report ideas with the proper rigor. Both the author and his opponants make mistakes that exacerbate a pseudo-scientific debate, causing confusion in the news media. The unfortunate result is a crisis spiraling out of controll. In the last section "the lessons of Caulerpa" he explains his opinions on why the failure in the system occured. I don't necessarily agree with his views, but it is an interesting critique of the current politics of biological science.
Good book, not for everyone.......2000-06-07
Positive: This book provides a very detailed account of the history of the invasion of Caulerpa taxifolia. I recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about nature (environmentalists), any students of biology, or anyone who has an interest in biodiversity issues. As a student of biology, I can say that he is completely correct in his assessment of nonreductionist scientific pursuits (ecology, etc.). The reader feels involved in the action (as dry as it may be) and cheers Dr. Meinesz as he time and time again evidences the incompetency of the general public (and government) in dealing with scientific matters. It's an excellent book, overall.
Negative: It is rather slow reading. It could have been told better. The story could float more easily if there were more anecdotes.
Algae Overkill.......1999-12-20
A most remarkable story...poorly told. The runaway algae Caulerpa is negatively impacting the marine environment of the Mediterranean. Moreover the organism found its' way into the Mediterranean by a most unexpecteed route- via the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. What darma! The museum, run by Jacques Cousteau at the time of the introduction of the algae, has acted contray to its' own basic pricipals and contrary to the ideas of Commander Cousteau; first by causing the introduction and secondly by denying their own implication and third by acting to exacerbate the problem by delay. The problem with the book is the author spends too much time pointing to the museums shortcomings. Enough is enough! In the latter part ot the book the author addresses the biology of Caulerpa and the crisis in the present practice of biology- this part is much less repetative and flows much more smoothly. This portion could have been expanded to include such questions as; Is this an incipient species, and if so how does it relate to the process of speciation in general? Will a new dynamic take hold in the Mediterranean, and how dynamic will it be? How does the immedicate pre-Caulerpa environment compare to the older undersea world of Cousteau? Does Caulerpa trap sediment and change bottom topography? Does it clear the water (improve visability)? The answers to such questions are speculative, but few are better qualified to speculate than this author. Overall, largely because of the importance of the story, the wading is worth it.
