Garbage.......2006-12-05

Pros:
1. Anybody that can complete a 100 mile run has my respect whether he can write or not.
2. When he chooses to actually write about running every 25 pages or so, it is pretty good.
3. This one cracks me up - when he goes from the garbage stuff to the running stuff, he changes type faces. It's more of a bold font. His writing is still pathetic, but at least he tells me where the better stuff is.

Cons
1. This book isn't about running, its about some sort of religion thing. Running is just his means of talking about his religion thing.
2. I just finished reading Dean Karnazes book, Ultra Marathon Man. What a terrific book: short sweet and to the point. Then I pick up this piece of trash. How depressing ! Dean's book just made this "book" appear that much worse

I can't agree with the sweep of 5-star ratings. This book has it's moments, but at times it was so slow and boring. Don't know how it ranked this high.

After reading "Angeles Crest" I know now that there's a difference between living and being ALIVE. Mr. Modzelewski exudes life-force, courage, humor, and rare sensitivity in not only running 100 miles -- but in not being afraid to answer the very questions of our existence. That's it. No more smoking, eating junk -- I'm lacing up a new pair of running shoes and hitting the trails, with an open heart and mind to all of life's possibilities. Thank You, Michael Modzelewski.

This lexica-typ book covers 293 prison films including cast, technical listings, story and comments. As it is a softcover reprint of the 1991 publication all prison-films of the last 10 years are missing ("The Green Mile", "Shawshank Redemption" etc.) which is a kind of sad. Unfortunately european prison-films are missing at all. Trash-Cultmovies from the in europe so popular WIP-Film-Genre (Women in Prison)like "Women in Cellblock 9", "Barbed Wire Dolls" aka "Frauengefängnis" or the "Greta" and "Ilsa"-Films ("Ilsa, She Wolf of the S.S.") feat. Dyanne Thorne are not mentioned at all - but very important for this genre. Most of the european exploitation-directors like Jess Franco, Bruno Mattei, Joe D'Amato or Erwin C. Dietrich have made one or more contributions to this subgenre.
Further most of the POW-Films (Prisoner of War) are missing ("Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" or "Camp On Blood Island")
In order to obtain 5 * this films should have been included in this reference book.

YES, the mazes are quite dazzling. I would say that they are even aMAZEing!

The description says the creator is "famous" German artist and designer Ulrich Koch. Despite this claim of fame, I cannot find any info at all about him on the internet. If you know any information about this genius please let me know!

Take it to the next level.......2007-09-13

I have been reading about NLP and practising it for a few years now and I definitely found a lot which is new for me in this book. I am also an entrepreneur and since I started practising some of the techniques Chris Howards describes I have made some pretty big changes I am very happy with. These are the key things I got out of the book.

Modelling: We all know what this is but Howards tells you in great detail exactly what to do to repeat the results which are achieved by others.
Mind maps: A great way to imprint onto your subconscious.
A New Cognitive: I have written my own and now I am acquiring it.
Genius reading and expanded awareness: A great technique for covering a lot of ground quickly
Goal Setting: a way of implanting goals into your future that seems absolutely certain. It works for me.
The world and the brain are halogens: A way of looking at the human condition which is entirely conducive to creating your own reality: a valuable insight into just how powerful we might be.

Top Level Success Book.......2007-07-04

Christopher Howard has gone from having practically nothing to live on to becoming a sought after seminar speaker worth multi-millions. Having attended a large number of motivational speakers' events before his nadir he pondered how to break out. And he did. He shares his story and the steps he feels anyone who cares to can take to achieve the sort of life they would only dream of - doing what excites their own heart and making a living, and much more than basic living, out of it.

Using a basis of NLP he developed related techniques that can speed you in the direction YOU want to take. One overall read is required to get an idea of the whole process. Then a more deliberate step-by-step approach to put these ideas into action. But with the thorough self-evaluation that is built into the text, with check-lists and spaces to write your results, this seemingly complex process is made more manageable.

I have yet to read better book around self-development and achieving your dreams. Get it.

Insightful, Motivational, Complicated, Useful........2005-09-20

Turning Passions Into Profits was a great read, informative and substantive. Step 1 and Step 2 are great! The exercises and application to successful people was a plus. A drawback is the too much detail and somehow complicated categorization and "proprietary" processes that would take quite a few years for a 'creative type'non logical brain to master. Overall, the book was enlightenning, motivational and was worth the read.

With limited time for reading, I choose books that will motivate and move me forward. This book tells the story of a woman who turned her frustration into a dream and helped other people along the way. I just heard that her company is number one is America for skin care for 13 years in a row and number 1 in lipstick sales in America for the first time. This empire was built by a woman who kept being underused by her employers. Some companies really missed out on a huge future by passing her over. After reading her story...you can bet I am motivated to move ahead in my life.

What An Inspiration!.......2001-06-14

If you are looking for a book to inspire you and help you to set your priorities for life, this is the book for you. Not only is Mary Kay's writing addictive, her message is wonderful. I keep this and a few other of her books in a convenient spot so I can go back and read portions regularly. I find that her writing keeps me on track in life. Her idea of God First, Family Second, and Career Third; really made an impact on me. I would recommend this book to any woman or man of any age, religion and social status.

Dry reading but informative.......2003-10-22

There exist very few books on the Yom Kippur War. 'No Victory No vanquished' is a useless account written just after the war. 'The war of Atonement' by Herzog is informative. 'Yom Kippur War' by the london insight team is slightly biased against Israel but very informative. 'Two O'clock war' by Boyne is totally americanized and does not have a good grasp on Israel. This read by General 'Bren' Adan is the most professorial of the books and one of the most dry but also most informative in regards to the SOuthern front.

Adan found himself and his unit facing the brunt of the arab attack along the canal in the first days of the fighting. he lost 1/3 or more of his tanks in a wasted counterattack during the second day of the conflict. But although wounded his unit went on to cross the canal and take vengeance upon the Egyptians. This authoritative account is critical of the role of Sharon and commends 'Dado' for his original counterattack plan that was subsequently changed by Gonen.

An interesting account of Israeli arms in a time of crises. the new book by Blum 'Eve of Destruction' is a much easier read but does not contain the detail of this dry account of the war by one of its cheif participants.

Professional Military Account of Fighting at 1973 Suez.......2003-03-31

I have read many books about the 1973 Yom Kippur War (Sometimes called the October War, the War for atonement, the Tishreen War, the Ramadan war, and even a few other names), but Avraham (Bren) Adan's "On the Banks of the Suez" is without a doubt the most professionally written and open-minded account of the fighting on the Egyptian front of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Several outstanding books exist for the fighting on the Golan at the Syrian front and I highly recommend the books by Avigdor Kahalani and Raful Eitan. For a general overview of the war including both fronts, I recommend Chaim Herzog's "The War for Atonement." However, "On the Banks of the Suez" has no equal for explaining the action on the Egyptian front.

Some of the many reasons that make this a great book are:

1. PROFESSIONAL MILITARY WRITING: A military professional wrote this book for other military professionals. Many authors have a tendency to remove military language and viewpoints to simplify the text for popular review. Bren Adan resisted doing that although he did write the book in as lucid and clear a method as is possible without "dumbing down" the work.

2. IMPARTIAL CRITICISM: The book, while written by an Israeli general, is impartial. He doesn't hesitate to critique the fighting by either the Egyptians or the Israelis. In fact, he criticizes the Israeli actions much more so than those of the Egyptians combatants. There, of course, are some of his personal opinions and some discussions of the political factors, but Adan avoids overly moralizing history and instead presents it for the reader's review.

3. LITTLE TO NO INTELLIGENCE "BLUR": One of the shortcomings of many books written about the 1973 Yom Kippur war in the first five to ten years after the war is the editing that IDF spokespeople did to the information released about the war. For security's sake, they often change unit names and other critical date making it difficult to track whom was where and when. Adan, being intimately aware of such restrictions, was able to write this book without having his writing made confusing.

4. EXCITING ACCOUNTS OF THE ACTION: Adan holds no punches describing the action and successes of the fighters on both sides. I particularly enjoyed his accounts of the tough fighting by Egyptians commandos in the beginning of the war. The Israeli tankers, on the other hand, were tenacious dedicated fighters as well.

5. INSIGHTFUL ANALYSIS OF NONCOMBAT FACTORS: Adan describes very well what's is going on in the background of the war: the superpower struggle, ineffective UN mediation, political factors in both the Egyptian and Israeli government, as well as the effect of the civilians behind the lines.

I highly recommend this incredibly well written book to anyone interested in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. I particularly recommend it to military professionals.

A fine example of regional writing, focusing on Colorado.......2001-05-20

Starting from a personal viewpoint (but in no means limited by it) author Robert Michael Pyle eloquently writes of the importance of nature and of making a personal connection to the land and the natural world. Never preachy, he manages to gently urge the reader to look more closely at the local landmarks, wildlife and little details that make up their most familiar landscapes. I saw the landscape in my area with new eyes after reading this book.

A trip in the natural pockets left within suburban sprawl........1996-05-24

Pyle grew up near an irrigation canal running through Denver and Aurora, Colorado. He has returned to this canal throughout his life, and in this book he tells their stories. Urbanization leaves these pockets of unclaimed land behind, and this book is a durable guide to one example. Coloradans will find Pyle's work especially relevant. At times, the author strays into a didactic zeal as he warns of the need to protect such places, but this is by far the lesser part of The Thunder Tree.
