The strange saga of Mike Tyson is placed in stark relief by seasoned Sports Illustrated writer Richard Hoffer. Since his release from prison, Tyson has been at the center of a bizarre struggle to reclaim the heavyweight title without a noteworthy sporting moment--except for the infamous ear-biting episode. With wit and insight, Hoffer delineates the self-serving antics of the many handlers glomming on to the fighter, the insidious machinations of promoter Don King, and the confused behavior of Tyson himself.

4 out of 5 stars A Savage Business by Richard Hoffer.......2006-09-28

This is a behind the scenes look at mid 90's era of boxings heavyweight division mainly concentrating on Mike Tyson and his comeback after he got of prison after serving three years on a rape conviction in Indiana.

Its a decent book if your into boxing. In a sense it reads like a celebrity gossip column for mid 90's heavyweights though. One funny thing about this book is the author goes out of his way to show what unsavory characters many fighters, managers, and promoters that he talked about in this were but held up Riddick Bowe, Bruce Seldon and Tommy Morrison as being "nice guys" when all three of them later did stretches of prison time a few years after this book was published

Interesting Book Best Served With Bad Intentions

Interesting Book - I recommend reading it in addition to reading Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story by Peter Heller - this book picks up pretty much where Heller's book leaves off - it picks up at Tyson's release from the Indiana Prison and ends at the Holyfield ear biting.

The beginning and end are very clear in it's dealing with Tyson and notably charismatic and captivating - I especially liked the perception and analysis of Tyson's career.

The middle came up a bit short, but was readable and mostly dealt with the business side of things - the business side of Las Vegas, hotels, Don King and the business of boxing - Tyson is in there - just not as much as in Heller's book.

A necessary book for the Tyson fan - and it's an interesting read -

On it's own - I'd give A Savage Business: The Comeback and Comedown of Mike Tyson 3.5 stars (out of 5) - however - as a companion to Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story - I'd give it a 4.

Also (just so you know) - Iron Mike: A Mike Tyson Reader (by Daniel O'Conner) is another awesome book!

          2 out of 5 stars A clouded affair........2001-10-03

I would like to say that I tore through this book at a rate of knots and left fully satisfied. I hate to discover that halfway through a book it is becoming a chore to read but that is exactly how I found this book. Although it does have moments that will no doubt allow you leave to pause for thought, generally it is a tough read that the author has obviously tried hard to complicate regarding issues where motives were actually very simple. Maybe he was looking to read between the lines for deeper issues but I don't believe that they existed. If this were a school report card it would have "could do better" written all over it. Frustrating.

5 out of 5 stars Boxing Is For Desperate Young Men.......1999-03-15

Guys pretty desperate-i.e.,poor,hungry,uneducated, and with an abundance of brawn become boxers. This book is an entertaining story of one success story. While Mike Tyson is not always an ideal role model, he has succeeded in a physically dangerous business that takes brawn and smarts.

              3 out of 5 stars Decent Volume.......2001-10-18

The guide is in black and white, which makes it hard to discern some of the images. The appendices in the back of the guide make up for this detriment somewhat by providing vital information on the more obscure aspects of this title. The boss strategies presented in the game are not the best, but they do work. The main reason for getting this guide would be the persona compendium in the back, as it includes an impressive fusion listing, which no online guide (as of 10/18/1) has been able to reproduce.

2 out of 5 stars better than nothing.......2001-07-03

This one could have been so much better with just a bit more work applied to it. The black-and-white layout (including screenshots) used throughout is the first tip off that this guide takes only a halfway serious approach to its subject; is there really any valid excuse not to use color thoughout (saving money for the publisher doesn't count - Prima should know better)? The "maps" are just about nonexistent: the crude "overall" ones found in the actual game are used in place of the far more detailed - and legible - "closeup" ones which, with a little effort, could have been transposed into the book and linked together to form complete floor layouts. There is some value to be found in this guide, though. It's heavy on statistical information on subjects such as the Persona themselves, and it explains how to access and play through the "secret" dungeon. I haven't checked the accuracy of any of this information against the game, but it appears valid. Disappointing overall, but better than nothing - if you need a reference guide in the form of a book.

2 out of 5 stars Just the Basics.......2001-06-19

There is absolutely nothing in this strategy guide that you could not get online, for free, at gamefaqs.com or something similar. Although the spells/demon contacts/rumors listings seem to be complete and accurate, the actual strategies in the book range from the obvious to the ridiculous. Most bosses in the game, except for the final boss, can be beaten in just a few turns if you've really got a good strategy; the strategies in this book often take 10 or twenty minutes, and the author himself states that it may take that long to win the battle. Basically, he seems to advocate the stupid, brute, battle of attrition way rather than giving cleaner, more economical strategies that don't waste all of your SP and life-restoring items -- he doesn't seem to have quite grasped the point of the game and battle system. The character bios aren't even that great. You won't learn anything new from this book. If you really need help, just find a good faq or walkthrough online. I promise they will be more helpful than this book.

I never worked behind the bar, so I approached it with a bit of apprehension when developing my own establishment. Bar & Beverage Operation was a lifesaver. I would have been purchasing any old blender, instead of the industrial strength stainless steel version. The book also taught me the importance of rotating glassware. I never considered the repercussions of worn glassware breaking in a customer's hand. This book is full secrets from the tactics employees use to steal profits to tips on making the waiting room/line less of a chore. Bar & Beverage Operation was a true find.

              Book Description

The very name Lucrezia Borgia conjures up everything that was sinister and corrupt about the Renaissance—incest, political assassination, papal sexual abuse, poisonous intrigue, unscrupulous power grabs. Yet, as bestselling biographer Sarah Bradford reveals in this breathtaking new portrait, the truth is far more fascinating than the myth. Neither a vicious monster nor a seductive pawn, Lucrezia Borgia was a shrewd, determined woman who used her beauty and intelligence to secure a key role in the political struggles of her day.

Drawing from a trove of contemporary documents and fascinating firsthand accounts, Bradford brings to life the art, the pageantry, and the dangerous politics of the Renaissance world Lucrezia Borgia helped to create.

              3 out of 5 stars Worth a read.......2007-07-21

ok, I admit it, the book is kind of dry. There is a lot of dates, names and references to archives and documentation. It does not read like a novel, nor does it conjure images of a renaissance play...It is not, at least superficially, an entertaining read.

However, if you are into this sort of thing, and somewhat addicted to the history channel, so be it. Knowing the myths and rumor surrounding Lucrezia, this book provides a candid look that is base on solid research. It makes her seem human, although less exotic than we would like. For people who are interested in the "truth" of Lucrezia (at least what we can confirm or speculate from the research), this is worth a read.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Very dull. .......2007-03-08

The prose in this book drags itself from page to page with all the appeal of a wet blanket. I received it as a present - very much looking forward to a 'good read'. Instead, I found the prose dull, the story disappointingly assembled and the insights into the gusto of the Borgia's lives were meagre. The stage is littered with characters with few attempts made to sift them for the reader into categories of importance.

One of the most peculiar experiences, was my difficulty remembering what I had read the previous day when beginning a new section. Too dull and narratively undifferentiated to be worth bothering with in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Too many details, too little narrative.......2006-02-13

If you are desparately searching for the exact fasions and skin care of Renaissance ladies, here's your book. Also good for those of you interested in despots posing as religious leaders.

For anyone wanting to dive into Lucrezia's life and personality, look elsewhere. That woman barely makes an appearance in this book.

              2 out of 5 stars Dismal. .......2005-11-29

I hate to repeat the views of others, but this book really is a travesty. I was doing a term paper on Lucrezia and thought this book might help. The cover and the promise of dispelling the myths of Lucrezia lured me in, but I could barely comprehend what Sarah Bradford was trying to say throughout the entire book. The whole thing is just a jumble of names, places, dates, and ...more names. There is no narrative, it even goes for pages at a time without even mentioning Lucrezia's name. This book should be retitled "The Political Background of the Time that Just Happened to Include Lucrezia Borgia, Who Will Not Really Be Discussed".
              Such potential!
              Pity.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a woman of her time ..........2005-08-23

I cannot agree at all with the reviewers who found this book "boring." Lucrezia's early life, before she was Duchess of Ferrara, was inextricably caught up in the lives of her brother and her father. She didn't keep a diary, and there are few letters from her during the years of her first and second marriages; all observations about her motives and her views came from outside observers. She was a pretty pawn, and she was voiceless. As Duchess of Ferrara, she was minutely observed, and still was not truly free to speak in her own voice. However, her position meant that her letters were preserved, and so we have the correspondence with Pietro Bembo, Federigo Gonzaga, and Alfonso d'Este that show a woman who adroitly played the hand she was dealt. I don't know what other readers were expecting - breathless declarations and confessions in Lucrezia's own words, maybe, but these are declarations that just do not exist. It is necessary to read between the lines. Even the wardrobe descriptions (which I loved, by the way, because I do historical costuming and re-enacting) added to the portrait of Lucrezia.

                        Book Description

Germany and the United States entered the post-9/11 era as allies, but they will leave it as partners of convenience—or even possibly as rivals.

The first comprehensive examination of the German-American relationship written since the invasion of Iraq, Parting Ways is indispensable for those seeking to chart the future course of the transatlantic alliance.

In early 2003, it became apparent that many nations, including close allies of the United States, would not participate in the U.S.-led coalition against Iraq. Despite the high-profile tension between the United States and France, some of the most bitter opposition came from Germany, marking the end not only of the German-American "special relationship," but also of the broader transatlantic relationship's preeminence in Western strategic thought.

Drawing on extensive research and personal interviews with decisionmakers and informed observers in both the United States and Germany, Stephen F. Szabo frames the clash between Gerhard Schröder and George W. Bush over U.S. policy in Iraq in the context of the larger changes shaping the relationship between the two countries. Szabo considers such longer-term factors as the decreasing strategic importance of the U.S.-German relationship for each nation in the post-cold war era, the emergence of a new German identity within Germany itself, and a U.S. foreign policy led by what is arguably the most ideological administration of the post-World War II era.

Stephen F. Szabo presents a balanced if subjective look at the factors leading to the rift between Washington and Berlin over Iraq. He adroitly portrays how Sept. 11, 2001, was the shotgun in the marriage between U.S. conservative nationalists (Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney) and neo-conservatives (Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Pearl). The neo-cons seek to ensure American security by spreading democracy to every inch of the globe. Szabo ably profiles the historical and cultural circumstances that contributed to the German perception that Bush is a greater threat to world peace than Saddam Hussein. He also uncovers the underlying geopolitical fault lines causing the diplomatic temblors that are rattling the dishware on both sides of the Atlantic. His book is an excellent tactical portrayal of how a vital, longstanding diplomatic relationship can disappear virtually overnight. We strongly recommend this volume to any serious student of international relations, the Atlantic Alliance and the Bush Administration, particularly in regard to its response to 9/11.

                        5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone researching German-American relations.......2005-02-03

Parting Ways: The Crisis in German-American Relations is the first in-depth examination of the German-American relationship written since the recent invasion of Iraq. While America's tensions with France over the war has held a higher profile, America's relationship with Germany suffered severe deterioration. Professor of European studies Stephen F. Szabo suggests that the clash between Germany and the U.S. regarding policy in Iraq reflects even greater changes shaping the relationships between the two nations, as the U.S.-German relationship loses strategic importance in the post-cold war era, a new German identity rises within Germany, and the U.S. foreign policy serves the will of what is arguably the most ideological administration since the mid-twentieth century. A meticulous, in-depth study of the cutting-edge political climate, paying special attention to the legacies of the Holocaust on the German psyche - both the older and the younger generations. A "must-read" for anyone closely researching German-American relations, written in detail yet using terminology highly accessible to the lay reader.
