Fast-paced and compelling.......2000-12-19
For anyone interested in the history of the English monarchy and the Civil War, this is a great book. It is well researched, elegantly written, and provides a fascinating insight into this melancholy, intellectual and kind-hearted man who proved himself, in many ways, spectacularly ill-suited for kingship. This book deserves to have a place in every history lover's shelf!

Veteran reporter Andrew H. Malcolm profiles the dualistic nature of hockey--its beauty and brutality--as embodied by the NHL's smallest player, blank-toothed Theoren Fleury. Fury is a thorough, moving account of the Calgary Flames's lovable and feisty all-star that puts the reader on the ice and in the locker room of a sport that usually chews up players of Fleury's size. The former New York Times Canadian bureau chief knows his setting intimately--whether it's the roar of the crowd during a professional game or the deep silence of an abandoned ice rink somewhere out on the Ottawa plains. And with a mixture of curiosity and empathy, he investigates the driving force that allows a 5-foot, 6-inch, 160-pound man to compete in a rink full of larger, hard-charging adversaries. Besides chronicling a season with little Fleury and the Flames, however, Malcolm also portrays the enduring culture and tradition that is North American hockey. The result is a thoughtful understanding of--and appreciation for--the scrappy Theo Fleury and the deeply woven Canadian hockey obsession.
Book Description
On one level, this is the personal story of Theoren Fleury, the diminutive captain of the NHL’s Calgary Flames. On another level, this book examines how a pro athlete comes to be famous, and what it means. It is a story about commercialism fed by adulation, about power and riches and the presumed and real virtues of the star players who acquire them. On yet another level it is about what Ken Dryden called simply “The Game.”
Theoren Fleury received global recognition during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey by single-handedly winning two games for Canada and then by playing in his first All-Star Game in the following winter. Physically, Fleury is the smallest player in the NHL, yet, so intense is he, so quick, so skilled at faking and scoring, and so undaunted by the over 400 pounds of onrushing defencemen that routinely bar his way, that his coach and teammates have chosen him to be team captain. He is now a millionaire. He is also an intriguing combination of country boy, quick-witted city kid, ruthless pro athlete, father and family man, and reluctant, soft-spoken but sharp-tongued media hero.
In Fury, Andrew Malcolm follows Fleury through an entire hockey season. Yet this is more than a fan’s inside look at a major hockey star: it is also an intriguing, revealing, funny, and exciting look at Canada’s game by a gifted reporter and award-winning writer.

Lots missing.......2007-09-19
It's too bad the author didn't wait a few more years to write this, because he missed all kinds of drama that Fleury encountered after its publication, including his suspension from the NHL for drug problems, another divorce and brawls playing hockey in Ireland.
The author could have dug a little harder, too, into Fleury's messed up family and the speculation widely throughout the NHL that he might have been victimized in several ways by authority figures in his junior career.
Fury: Fleury and the Calgary Flames.......2002-06-13
Parts of this biography focus on Theo's childhood development and his opening years with the Calgary Flames. I say 'parts' because it also spends a great deal of time discussing how various parts of the Flames organzation runs, with chapters devoted to the people behind the scenes. While the book doesn't concentrate completely on Fleury, I still felt it was informative in bringing me the whole picture regarding the things that affect his daily life (travel, practices, autograph hounds, injuries, and such). In a few years, I'd like to see this author revisit Fleury and write about his days with the Avalanche, the Rangers, and the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Disappointed.......2001-10-24
The Theo-specific info in this book would make a very nice in-depth magazine article. The book is poorly written, very disjointed. The author introduces a Theo story, and in the next paragraph is telling the history of the food services manager. In one place, I counted 6 pages that included only 1 paragraph of 2 lines about Theo. Theo has an incredible spirit. His story is one of triumph over truly overwhelming odds. He deserved a better effort for what is titled as HIS biography. If you want to know about the GM, coaches (at all levels), security guards, bus drivers, entertainment managers, food service, mascots and ticket sales this is the book for you. If you want to really get to know an NHL player, read Brett Hull: His Own Story.
You'll love Theo, after you read this book!(if you're human).......2001-01-11
I bought this for my husband, for Christmas. I read it out of curiosity. Theo's story will not just warm your heart. It will make you love him, and respect him. So many who have his difficult background use it as an excuse to walk around with a chip on their shoulder. Theo doesn't, he only has a chip on his shoulder on the ice, where it belongs. The author included a lot of other stuff, that sometimes made the book a difficult read, but I'd just turn the pages until he picked up Theo's story again. I liked him to begin with, now I root hard for him, this little dynamo paid his dues, and earned his success. If you only read one book this year, you have to read this one.
A Gretzky pal.......1999-04-20
I bought FURY a while ago and hadn't gotten around to reading it. But then I saw Wayne Gretzky at his retirement news conference say how he would have liked to play with Theoren Fleury. I got out the book and spent all night reading it. It was one fun book about sports, about an interesting guy and what it is really like inside a real pro sports team. Now that Fleury is playing for an American team it's easier to follow his play--another 40 goal season. Thanks to whoever wrote this book for an interesting read. I learned so much. And it was fun doing it.
Book Description
In recent decades, the border areas between photography and film have emerged as an important field of contemporary photographic art. Well-known practitioners include the American artist Cindy Sherman with her "Film Stills," a series of black-and-white self-portraits evoking film stills from the 1940s and 1950s both in form and content, and the Australian Sam Taylor-Wood, whose photographic panoramas-sometimes more than 30 feet long-forge interpersonal dramas from individual pictures, not unlike unrolled scrolls of film. With works by 40 international artists, this book is the first dedicated to a growing artistic fascination. Based on the observation that at the beginning of the 21st century the history of the moving picture is at an end and yielding fast to the reality of accelerated information, the book bridges the gap between the "classical" position of photography and contemporary work using the Internet and other technologies.

Helpful.......2007-01-10
This may or may be needed if you have the original RollerCoaster Tycoon. I liked the original RollerCoaster Tycoon and was pleased when number 2 came out. I like number 2 better than number 3. The Prima Stategy Guides are not perfect -- incomplete in some ways and too informative in places where very little is needed. However, my overall opinion is that they are very worthwhile. I own the Prima Strategy Guide for all three RollerCoaster Tycoon games. .

Customer Reviews:
Solid brand basics engagingly written.......2006-05-10
There's not a lot that's new here. This is good brand basics for beginners or for those who need a brush up. It is very accessibly written. The examples are clear, concrete and valuable. It's free of the irritating `brand' jargon that is so pervasive in many other books on the subject.
Captivating Read.......2006-04-07
As creative director of KREMEDIA: Experts in marketing, branding & design, it is imperative for myself to ensure that my business obtains higher knowledge from more experienced people in my field. D'Allessandro's book was highly inspirational and motivating, focussing upon information about the brand as a whole and drilling into elements that in many cases, one would not take into consideration. Highly recommended.
A clever and humorous read for the average econ student........2005-01-02
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I'm an economics student Santa Monica High School and when assigned a book report on the subject, I found most of the other books I was considering full of jargon and code words that made them confusing and somewhat daunting for me to pick up. Such is not the case with Brand Warfare. It's is extremely engagingly written, very lucid, and full of funny stories. The book also works because Mr. D'Allesandro is a major-league character and has a remarkably dynamic outlook on the world for a guy who runs a life insurance company. I'm probably not the target audience for this book, but I found it to fun and insightful and well worth the time.
excellent!.......2004-12-12
This book is excellent! I can't ever think of any other way to explain how to build the killer brand.
Every Business Person Should Read This Book. Powerful........2004-02-17
While this is a short book and easy to read, it does not lack substance. Being in advertising and marketing, I know the value of a brand. But as D'Alessandro points out in his book, branding is the business of everyone in an organization.
This book would be of value to a CEO of a large organization and all of its employees or the owner of a one-person shop and all advertising people. Branding, after all, is something everyone is responsible for. It is not the exclusive domain of the ad agency.
The book shows how a large, well-known brand can lose market share overnight to an Internet start up. There is much in this book that will be of great value to you if you want to be a well-respected brand --- whether you are a big business or a one-person brand.

Book Description
The tragic yet triumphant story of a young mother's winter journey to the Bering Sea coast with her two young children. This powerful narrative will haunt readers.
Book Description
Many troops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne had their introduction to the Normandy countryside by way of a perilous landing in a glider. This is a too little told aspect of the war and Philippe Esvelin seeks, in this colorful book, to set the record straight and give due testimony to the courage of the brave men, both the paratroopers and pilots, who gave their lives in the first hours of the beginning of the liberation of Europe. It is a unique photographic record of their efforts.
Book Description
Although the word gliderman does not appear in the dictionary, a brave group of World War II soldiers known as glidermen flew into combat inside unarmed and unarmored canvas-covered gliders known as "flying coffins."
Charles J. Masters points out that because World War II was the first truly mechanized and armored global conflict, the role of the glidermen and their combat gliders was at best anachronistic. Fighter planes exceeded speeds of 400 miles per hour and were heavily armed with multiple machine guns. Dogfights had taken on new dimensions, eclipsing the tactics, speed, and firepower first evidenced by the fragile biplanes of World War I. Tanks achieved a lethal efficiency barely dreamed of even five years before the war. An array of weaponry never seen in any previous military engagement confronted the combat soldier during World War II.
And yet there were gliders. And glidermen.
Masters tells of these men and of their fragile aircraft in a war of mechanized chaos. In copious detail, he describes the gliders and the Americans who boarded them during the American D-Day glider attack, a mission that was part of the overall cross-channel plan code-named "Operation Neptune." The son of a gliderman with the 82nd Airborne Division, Masters had unique access to the surviving glidermen and comrades of his father. During the course of his research, he located and interviewed 106 of the men who had flown the D-Day mission in gliders. As an insider—in a sense almost a member of the family and fraternity of glider-men—Masters was cordially received by the members of the American airborne divisions that participated in D-Day, many of whom told him stories they had seldom told their own friends and families. Often harrowing and always riveting, the stories these men told an eager listener and researcher are very much a part of this narrative.
Masters has also assembled the finest existing collection of photographs of the American D-Day glider attack. These photographs—many of which have never before been published—provide a spectacular photographic record of a little-known aspect of this war. In fact, because of the short military history of the American combat glider, most readers, including veterans of World War II, will not have seen one of these "flying coffins," even at a distance. These photographs afford the opportunity to actually examine the inside of the combat gliders used on D-Day, to observe the glidermen in action, and to witness the often tragic consequences of the glider attack.
Customer Reviews:
I was a glidermen on D-Day. Best account ever!.......2001-07-16
I was a battalion commander and glidermen in the 101st Airborne Division for the D-Day operations. I was also one of the consultants for the movie "The Longest Day". Over the last 50 years I've endeavored to read as many books as I could on the subject of D-Day, Airborne and the American and British gliders used in the D-Day operations. "Glidermen of Neptune" is the most accurate, clear, consise and lucid accounts of the D-Day glider operations I've ever read. It is an excellent book and an invaluable resource on the subject. I recommended it to my son, who is an instructor at the War College and uses it as a reference book in his class. I applaud Mr. Masters for his fine book.
Not what you think!.......2001-05-29
This is one of the most disappointing books I have ever purchased. ...there does not appear to be any original research conducted with participants. The book is merely a rehash of other writers" efforts and a monotonous listing of Units, departure times and LZ arrival times. For instance, he states: "... two glidermen managed to push open the door of the still speeding glider so that another could fire his BAR ..." Who are these men and what is the source of this information? We are never told individual glidermen's names or sources of these stories. The combat descriptions seem generic, in nature. In addition to the almost copywriter approach to the acutal D-Day combat descriptions, the remainder of the text recants the statistics of the day "Mission Galveston was to begin with two serials of fifty gliders each taking off concurrently from two different fields. The first serial, leaving from Ramsbury, was comprised of thirty-two Wacos and eighteen Horsas. All fifty gliders in the second serial, leaving from Alderson, were Wacos." For all the energy one gets from reading about D-day events he could have put the information in a few tables. Masters has the foundation of a good book, but he needs to weave the lives and struggles of the individuals he purports to describe into and interesting narrative to warrant the title "Glidermen of Neptune".
Excellent.......2001-04-26
Excellent book. Well researched and superbly written. A must read by anybody interested in WWII, Airborne, D-Day, etc. This is the best book ever written about the use of combat gliders in WWII. I hope the author, Charles Masters writes more. If he does, please send me a copy and charge my account. Thank you.
Great.......2000-12-13
Finally a great book about combat gliders and the part they played on D-Day. Superb! The author did a sensational job of laying out in detail this unique WWII subject. Also the best analysis and explanation about how the location of the invasion was chosen and how it was decided what country was responsible for assaulting a particular beach. This is the first book that I have found that sets out this information in detail. Well done!
Well written.......2000-12-07
An extremely well written, consise and informative book about a little known area of WWII. I bought three and gave them as gifts. Eached recipient raved.
Book Description
Written in 1883, this political and economic treatise is even more pertinent today than at the time of its first publication. Graham Sumner champions the rights of the individual over the state and organized pressure groups. He defines the important role that the "Forgotten Man" must play in our social and economic development.
Customer Reviews:
Myth of the Individual!.......2003-12-26
Ah yes - Americans love to claim they are 'individuals.' And this cloying dated books attempts to define what that is with little insight. At the time I am sure readers assumed this to be true, yet even nowadays any reader can refute this arguement in a simple manner by stating where would we be without the collective actions of our US Army in defeating Nazism?
An excellent, concise defense against socialism.......2002-01-23
I have found no other work that so clearly destroys the foundations of socialism in so few pages as this work. The rhetoric is fertile ground for effective debate, as it rarely uses gobblygook economic theory... which fortunately was not around at the time this work was written. No Supply/demand curves here.
Sumner promoting the virtue of limited government........2000-12-02
First published in 1883, Sumner's "What Social Classes Owe to Each Other" is an excellent source for the promotion of limited government. Sumner talks about the "Forgotten Man" in context to the socio-political and economic of a state. He defines the differences between the "weak", "poor" and the "burden" and how the humanitarians, reformers and the philathropists of our society seek forced charities from the "Forgotten Man" to support the above. In this book he promotes the principles of democracy and voluntary charity. He gives solid reason and logical explainations about his philosophy. I higly recommend this 145 page read to the students of Political Theory and Philosophy.
What Social Classes Owe Each Other.......1999-09-03
"Not a damn thing." As George Stigler summarized this classic case for laissez faire.
One of the all-time best books on Freedom.......1999-06-21
No author has ever done a better job, in such a short book, of taking the bark off the socialist concepts of one social class owing anything to another. The philosophy of Sumner, who was a professor at Yale, (but a great thinker, nonetheless!) has shown up in the rhetoric of many politicians throughout this century. The Marxist idea of forced redistribution of the wealth is profoundly defeated. Every politician should be required to read this book before taking office. Sumner's caustic pen and penetrating analysis make this one of the best five I've ever read in the Annals of Freedom.

Book Description
Charging Ahead foretells the world's next great energy transformation: the shift to clean, renewable energy sources. It shows how renewable energy, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles, when used together, can give us back a clean environment and create a healthy, sustainable economy. In chronicling this extraordinary technological revolution, John J. Berger provides a fascinating look at the new industries that will make it possible, and the trillion-dollar benefits Americans can enjoy by choosing pollution-free energy and transportation.
Customer Reviews:
Say Goodbye to Fossil Fuels.......2000-10-26
The writing style was clear and captivating, and the ideas were well supported by a wealth of research. Be sure you understand however that the book is focused on the business of renewable energy and less on the technology and policy aspects. Most of the book is comprised of case stories which follow businesses through their struggle to make renewable energy profitable and competitive with fossil fuels. You will get an intimate portrait of the ups and downs of businesses in the industry and the personalities behind them. Unfortunately, the minutia of each step along a business's road to success or failure can become less than interesting. The book was largely a history of business dealings in the industry and I was looking for something which gave more attention to the prospect of renewables in the future and how renewables can overcome the tiresome use of fossil fuels.
A informative look into renewable energies technology........1999-09-16
A very interesting book.If you are interested in solar, wind, biomass and other clean energy sources then this is the book for you. This book takes you from past to present with insights on the people who are making this field happen. It also tells you about their business strategies and practices. It also gives detailed information about where this particular technology is headed with respects to the dropping manufacturing costs and a host of other things. If you choose only one book on this subject,MAKE SURE IT IS THIS ONE!enjoy.
