    Book Description

Born in 1651 in what is now Maine, William Phips became a sea captain out of Boston, an adventurer in search of Spanish treasure in the Caribbean. He captured and plundered Port Royal in Acadia, now Nova Scotia, and led an unsuccessful expedition against Quebec in 1690. He became the first royal governor of Massachusetts in 1692, put an end to the Salem witchcraft trials, and negotiated a treaty with the native Wabanaki.

This biography presents a well-rounded picture of Phips, one that looks at all phases of his colourful career. He was an unusual figure among colonial governors, and his very uniqueness, as well as his difficulties as governor, help us to understand the politics and society of New England during his era. Helped and hindered by his obscure origins, Phips struggled for advancement, and his struggle illustrates the fluid nature of the British Empire in the late seventeenth century.

Phips's life was left unexplored by scholars for the past seventy years. The New England Knight reconstructs his career using contemporary material that brings life and immediacy to the narrative. It interacts with recent studies in colonial, imperial, aboriginal, and marine history to set Phips's eventful life in context.

5 out of 5 stars A story of a very personal relationship of genius.......1999-09-08

This book covers the time when the author Paul Horgan discovered the music of Igor Stravinsky and as fate would have it, became Stravinsky's personal friend. Very biographical in the first years of Horgan's writing career then the exciting part comes into play when he actually meets Mr and Mrs. Stravinsky for the first time, and fosters a personal and professional friendship up until the death of the maestro. Anyone interested in the genius of Stravinsky and his life as a conductor touring the World after 70 years of age will be fascinated by this account.

Flying soon captured Nate's heart. His air service ministry to isolated missionaries put him on a path of destiny that would ultimately end with a final airplane flight with 4 missionary friends to the "Palm Beach" landing strip in the jungles of Ecuador.
The men's lives given that day not only opened a door to the gospel for the unreached "Acucas"; it has been said that possibly no single event of the twentieth century awakened more hearts to God's call to serve in missions.

              A must read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, life changing story.......2001-12-15

I just finished reading this book aloud to my children, ages 8 and 6. Each day, they begged me to read more. Our family was already familiar with what happened to the five missionary martyrs, including Nate Saint and Jim Elliot. After reading this book, we all felt that we were a part of Nate Saint's family, and we wept at the end of the book. The book was very well-written and very appropriate to read to children, but also very interesting for my husband and myself. In fact, about halfway through with my children, I finished reading it myself while they were asleep. Nate Saint's story was very challenging to all of us to fully devote our lives to Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, inspirational book!.......2000-05-11

This book is all about a Christian man that gave his love of flying planes to God. This inspriational story about Nate Saint tells of his life, from his childhood, to his tragic death in Ecuador. Nate was actually a martyr for God. By the death of his friends and himself, he acutally opened up the door for others to minister to the savage Auca tribe. This is a wonderful book, I highly reccommend it!

                Book Description

For each soldier killed in combat during the Spanish-American War, more than seven died from diseases such as typhoid fever and malaria—a rate higher than that of the Civil War. During a time of rapid medical innovation and discovery, why did these soldiers perish so needlessly?

Bullets and Bacilli is the first book to focus primarily on military medicine during this conflict. The historian Vincent J. Cirillo argues that a universal element of military culture stifled medical progress. The Spanish-American War gave army medical officers an opportunity to introduce new medical technologies to the battlefield, including the X-ray, aseptic surgery, and sanitary systems derived from germ theory. With few exceptions, however, their recommendations for preventive health measures were almost completely ignored. Scientific knowledge in itself was not sufficient to implement much-needed medical improvements; putting these ideas into military practice also required the cooperation of line officers and volunteer soldiers, as well as a restructuring of military education.

The influence of military experiences on the history of American medicine is often overlooked. Cirillo shows how preventable deaths during the Spanish-American War led to reforms that continue to save the lives of both soldiers and civilians to the present day.

                Book Description

Israeli citizens speak out for peace and reconciliation.

The Other Israel is an urgent and passionate intervention by Israeli citizens challenging the continued occupation of Palestinian territory and the failed policies of Ariel Sharon's government. Against a backdrop of increasing violence on both sides, the book presents a broad range of dissenting voices that articulate practical, legal, and moral objections to the occupation. Written from within the throes of the unfolding tragedy, it includes contributions from journalists, novelists, activists, military reservists, and former government officials.

Among the topics covered are dissent within the Israeli armed forces, the brutality of recent Israeli military interventions, the inaccurate claims concerning Ehud Barak's "generous offer" to the Palestinians at Camp David, the shortcomings of the Israeli media in reporting the war accurately, the moral decline of Israel in its role as an occu-pying power, and the failure of Ariel Sharon to bring about either peace or security for Israeli citizens.

The Other Israel questions what it means, here in America, to stand in solidarity with Israel: Are Israel's true supporters those who urge occupation and reprisal, or those calling for reconciliation and a just settlement? Needed now more than ever, this book challenges narrow American perceptions of public opinion in Israel, and will act as a catalyst in prompting vital debate about the future of Israel and the path to peace for all citizens of the Middle East.

                5 out of 5 stars A Book worth Praise.......2005-09-19

Tom Segev helps enlighten readers about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He produces excerpts from several different people, who tell the story like they see it. These Israeli citizens show proof that they believe like what the majority of the free-thinking world (this doesn't include the US) knows. These people are politicians, activists, soldiers, who have seen the mistakes of ISrael and pray that it changes and deters from it's brutal direction. They fight against critics who do not want to admit that the conflict is as much maybe more of Israel's fault than of Palestines. Let there voices be heard and let freedom ring!

1 out of 5 stars The Benedict Arnold guide to Israel.......2005-05-17

The contributors of this volume are among the most anti- Israel voices in Israel. Among them are those who in essence call for the destruction of the state of Israel. Ilan Pappe is the most prominent here. His latest action is calling for a boycott of Haifa University the Institution that pays his salary.
Among the other stars of this collection are Zeev Sternhall and Meron Benevenisti. Anyone who has read these two very disturbed people in the pages of Haaretz knows how filled they are with hatred for everyone, even their friends from the extreme left.
The main line of this work is that the Israelis have been 'occupying ' Palestine since 1967 , the Six- Day War. Of course then there was no 'Palestine' to occupy but territories under the control of Jordan and Egypt. These 'disputed territories' the great part of which constitute the Biblical heartland of Israel were rundown , neglected backwaters. Israel's withdrawal from a good share of them after the 1993 Oslo agreement did not bring 'peace' but rather more Terror from the Palestinians. The famous law is in this struggle that every Israeli concession or gesture toward peace is greeted by more Arab violence. The contributors of this work seemed to fail to notice this particular recurrent feature of the conflict.
The contributors to this volume as Alyssa Lappen points out in her outstanding review on this site neglect to mention Israel's peace offers , offers which now extend over a sixty year period. As Abba Eban famously said " The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity" Five times they have been offered a state and refused it.
The contributors to this volume downplay Arab terror and incitement, the inhumane and even satanic hatred of Jews evinced by the Palestinians. Since the contributors to the volume are all Israeli Jews this means that they are downplaying the hatred shown to their own friends and family. This certainly puts them in the Benedict Arnold category. They are also might be called cowardly lackeys of their own people's enemies.
When I think of the people of Israel's love of peace, their tremendous desire just to be able to live out their lives in quiet normalcy, the terrible sufferings so many have known from Arab terror including its most recent manifestation, suicide bombing, I am outraged at the mendacity and dishonesty of this work.

If there is a Gehinnom( Hell) certainly the contributors of this volume have earned their place in it.

1 out of 5 stars Very misleading and counterproductive.......2005-04-24

I think it is always wise to examine, question, and criticize the policies of one's government. Especially in wartime. But there is a line that is unwise to cross; sedition is unhelpful. And while I do not know exactly where that line is, I would be very hesitant to appear to recommend foreign action against my own nation, especially were I to couple that with what appeared to be blatant untruths designed to justify such action.

Not all the articles in this book do that, of course. But at least one went far enough so that I would simply have advised the authors not to write it, just for that reason.

There are many different "voices" in this book. But there are some similarities. Most, if not all of them, fail to realize that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are as legal as Arab ones. Nor do they consider that an obvious thing to do, if for some reason the Jewish settlements were in fact illegal and on Arab land, would be to force land-poor Israel to buy most (or all) of them and keep them rather than abandon them.

The writers are often correct in describing the present situation in Israel as bad in many respects. But I think their recommendations would make things worse. In addition, many of the articles are extremely misleading, which indicates to me that truth is no friend of most of the arguments made in this book.

In one of the articles, Uri Avnery makes a good point, namely that when a whole population "is seething with rage" it becomes dangerous. We should not forget that. Arab incitement has indeed made the situation more dangerous. And Arabs are not the only people on this planet who are capable of seething with rage. Such an effect might be produced in some victims of Arab violence. Maybe the time to try to prevent this is before it happens.

                4 out of 5 stars Constructive Criticism.......2005-04-21

You probably already know whether you are inclined to read this book with a receptive mind or whether it will drive you into a frothing rage. This review is directed to those that fall into the first category. There are some interesting pieces in this book, and it's certainly a quick way to get a variety of opinions from the left-of-Labor Israeli perspective. The major flaw is that a collection of many two- or three-page essays (most pieces are originally newspaper op-ed pieces or open letters of some kind) you never really get the chance to delve too deeply into the issues, and instead you get a good deal of repetition. It's not without it's value, of course, but it's not essential (you can read Ha'aretz for free on the internet every day for a similar experience) and suffers a bit from priveleging quantity over depth.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.......2003-09-30

If you like lies, revisionist history, falsehood, and numbers without statistics to back them up, then this is the book for you. I would recommend Myths and Facts by Bard, From TIme Immorial by Joan Peters, and any book by Bernard Lewis.

                      Book Description

When John Muir died in 1914, the pre-eminent American naturalist, explorer, and conservationist had not yet written the second volume of his autobiography, in which he planned to cover his Yosemite years. Ediors Robert Engberg and DonaldWesling have here provided a remedy. Their account begins in 1863, the year Muir left the University of Wisconsin for what he termed the "University of the Wilderness." Following an accident in 1867 that nearly left him blind, he vowed to turn from machines and continue to study nature. That led, in 1868, to his first visit to Yosemite Valley, where he began his glacier studies. Muir spent much time exploring the Yosemite region, Tuolumne, and both the southern and northern Sierras, publishing articles, and keeping extensive journals through 1875, when he began to write for the San Francisco Bulletin and expanded his travels to areas throughout the west. Mining a rich vein of sources-Muir's letters, journals, articles, and unpublished manuscripts, as well as selections drawn from biographical pieces written about Muir by people who met him in Yosemite in the early 1870s-Engberg and Wesling have assembled what they term a "composite autobiography," providing brief interpretive and transitional passages throughout the book. This work is especially valuable because it documents Muir's formative years, when he is maturing away from "conventional cultural paradigms of work and materialism toward new ways of thinking about nature and its impact on human development."
