Book Description
The story of the ordination of the Reverend Betty Bone Schiess-one of the first women priests in the Episcopal Church.
Reverend Betty Bone Schiess' engagingly written memoir is a valuable contribution to the scholarship of religious study as well as to feminist study and to legal scholarship, particularly on equal rights issues. Schiess draws parallels throughout her work to earlier efforts of the suffragettes and abolitionists of Seneca Falls.

Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good Dracula sequel!.......2003-04-10
'Countess Dracula' by author Carrol Borland, is a surprisingly good, well-written novella, that is a worthy sequel to Bram Stoker's original classic 'Dracula'. The author wrote this book back in the early 1930's, when she was a teenage girl with an unabashed crush on film star Bela Lugosi! She soon met the famous man, and was able to read him her manuscript. Bela Lugosi liked the novella, and did try to have 'Countess Dracula' published at the time, but he was unable to as Universal Studios still held the copyright on the character of Count Dracula.
Carrol Borland has an exciting, pulp-style to her writing, with her story taking place in the mysterious, haunting land of Transylvania! Two English couples, one a pair of honeymooners, stay at a village inn that lies directly in the shadow of a mountain capped by Castle Dracula. The young beautiful bride attracts the attention of the handsome, suave middle-aged count, who fancies her for himself! The description of author Borland's Count Dracula truly matches Bela Lugosi, and not Bram Stoker's literary vampire. 'Countess Dracula' would have made a great, eerie little Universal horror film back in 1935!
The narrative is excellent, and only falters at the very conclusion with a bit of an unsatisfying ending. Carrol Borland had real talent as a writer, and it's a great pity that she didn't write further novels. We are grateful though, that this manuscript was safely hidden away in her desk for over six decades until publication!
Borland's long-lost novel in print at last!.......1999-07-22
Actress Borland co-starred with Bela Lugosi in 1935's THE MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (MGM, D: Tod Browing). She first met Lugosi after seeing him onstage in DRACULA: THE VAMPIRE PLAY. It inspired her to write COUNTESS DRACULA, a sequel ore to the play than to Stoker's novel. She showed it to Lugosi, and they became friends. Now, just before Borland's death, the book was published. Yes, it was an amateurish effort, not terribly good. However, it has a unique place in both film history and horror literature, and it belongs in every true vampire fan's collection.

Book Description
They're challenging, baffling, and wildly entertaining: here are 240 colorful, mind-boggling puzzles of every kind to sharpen anyone's thinking skills! Vivid optical illusions fool and tease the eye: try to find both a young girl and her grandmother in what seems to be a picture of only one woman. Or test those smarts on a different type of visual problem by figuring out which of six pieces isn't needed to make a cube. Sneaky lateral thinking puzzles are so tricky that there are extra clues to help: look at them first and then solve the riddle of why a tourist in London wouldn't ride the escalator in the subway station--even though he wanted to. It takes really creative reasoning to solve clever logic conundrums, including mathematical enigmas from the "addled arithmetician" and mini-mysteries to delight the armchair detective. And lots more stimulating fun!

Put on Your Thinking Hat!.......2004-11-20
Just like they say for a Wedding;"Something Old,Something New,Something Borrowed, and Something Blue";this book has a bit of everything. It doesn't matter how smart you are ,the important ingredient in solving these puzzles is being able to think;particularly outside the box. These puzzles are for all ages and anyone who picks up this book will find something to take their interest and quite easily solve.Answers are provided and if you get stuck on a problem, just look up the answer.Once you see how easy it was, you'll gain confidence to try another.Like I said,it's not really a matter of difficulty, but a matter of thinking. Many puzzle books scare off the neophyte but this book will encourage one to continue;because in the end these puzzles are not really too hard. Some of these puzzles have been around for a long time while others are new.The printing, drawings and physical contruction of this book is first class and will stand a lot of wear and tear if left around the cottage, john, den, classroom or whatever, for interest to everyone who is looking for a little entetainment. This book was put together by some of the best known puzzle creators around today.Sterling, the publishers, are one of the best and largest in the business of puzzle books and this book is indicative of their quality.
A great book for the entire family!.......2004-01-21
I recently picked up BrainStrains Power Puzzles, attracted first by the stunning multi-coloured illustrations on every page. It turned out to be the perfect gift for my 12-year old boy, who loves puzzles and takes the big book with him on our family vacations to challenge us all. My younger 10-year old son is also a fan of the book, as he finds he can solve some of the puzzles on his own, and questions us on some of the many and diverse topics included. I would highly recommend this book for any household looking to find something the entire family can read and talk about.
Thanks,
JP Atherton

Bad and piece of krap.......2002-12-10
This book was written by a non accounting guy probably who knew more finance than accounting. This book should not be prescribed by any college or professor for accounting! Its terrible to comprehend coz the author does not explain from where or how he gets the numbers for the problems that he has worked out in the book. This book is confusing, creates frustration, and basically makes you loose your patience in minutes upon reading. I feel like I have been cheated of my hard earned money
Very disappointing book...........2002-12-07
This book is very disappointing. I also believe that this book is targeted to accountants, however, I think that it was written as a class project. This book is loaded with problems.
For example, there are references to things for which there are no definations (e.g. materiality of options) there are basic errors in the case study (e.g. Case 9-5, p. 355, "Cumulative effect of accounting change, 189,191) and the 'supporting' CD does _not_ contain ANY of the income statement or balance sheets needed to solve any of the problems or case studies. These are just a few examples of the problems/errors that I've found.
I'm sorry, but for and Eighth Edition and a good sum of money, I expected more!
The only reason that I give it one star is because I could not give it any less (seriously!!).
poor textbook.......2002-11-26
This book was written by an accountant and it is readable only to accountants. If you do not have practical and extensive experience in accounting, you will have hard time learning about financial analysis. Explanations are very brief and not helpful. Only good thing about it is a lot of examples and good problems and cases to work on.
Customer Reviews:
bad as bad can be.......2004-07-14
Don't buy this expensive but bad book! This is truly the worst book in accounting/finance I have read so far. It is awfully written. Often, I did not understand what Gibson wants to say. Only after consulting other books did I get the point .The book also focuses too much on technical details (which items include/exclude in ratios) but does not discuss their broader context. And last but not least, the questions and problems at the end of the chapters contain not one single answer. Which means, Gibson wants us to buy the study guide and dish out more money . But if that guide is as bad as the book, its a waste of money. I cannot understand how a book in its 9th edition can be that bad...

Mexican American journalist John Phillip Santos's lyrical and loving memoir explores his family's history in magnificent prose touched with the singing cadences of his Spanish-language heritage yet vibrant with the energy of American English. It's a combination utterly suited to his native San Antonio, where las viejitas--the little old ladies of the Garcia and Santos families--ruled over their children and grandchildren with the toughness and grandeur of the Mexico they left during the revolution of 1914. "Poised between those ancient Indio origins from the south ... and our Mestizo future in the north," these new Texans made Mexico live for their descendants in the magical stories and folkloric practices of an older culture. Yet there was also a sense of secrets kept and cherished possessions left behind, of people who had traveled far and traveled light. The "wind of story" was also "a wind of forgetting," and as Santos probes his heritage, he comes to understand that "it is okay to move on and forget." Nonetheless, this is a book that restores to memory the drama not just of a single family but of an entire people whose past is more closely entwined with that of the United States than some Americans care to remember. Santos depicts them with care and dignity. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
In this beautifully wrought memoir, award-winning writer John Philip Santos weaves together dream fragments, family remembrances, and Chicano mythology, reaching back into time and place to blend the story of one Mexican family with the soul of an entire people. The story unfolds through a pageant of unforgettable family figures: from Madrina--touched with epilepsy and prophecy ever since, as a girl, she saw a dying soul leave its body--to Teofilo, who was kidnapped as an infant and raised by the Kikapu Indians of Northern Mexico. At the heart of the book is Santos' search for the meaning of his grandfather's suicide in San Antonio, Texas, in 1939. Part treasury of the elders, part elegy, part personal odyssey, this is an immigration tale and a haunting family story that offers a rich, magical view of Mexican-American culture.
"With its multi-generational cast, many legends and ghostly visitations, Santos' book is evocative of Gabriel Grcia Mrquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude."--San Antonio Express-News (front page)
"This is a splendid memoir filled with universal themes of strong family bonds and appreciation for remembering the past." --San Diego Tribune
"Like Kathleen Norris's memoir of life on the Dakota plains, [this] is a spiritual geography, a reflection on time and the often unbearable tension between the spiritual and material."--The Boston Globe
Customer Reviews:
The Anglicising of Texas..........2006-08-10
Beautiful and eloquent words crafted by Juan Santos in a wonderful memoir: "...he Anglicising of Texas..." is a polite term when murder and theft would be a better description. Killing of innocent Mexicans merely for being on a White's land and the indenturement (or limited slavery) of those seeking a better life, I was shocked, but not surprised, by the evil of the white Texans.
The beautiful Mexican people should and will inherit the Patria.
A Window.......2006-07-04
Mr. Santos' lyrical and thoughtful storytelling provides welcome insight into the history and culture of south Texas. The book provided a window into parts of San Antonio about which I have been both ignorant and curious. This is a smart selection as the first read for the 1 Book 1 San Antonio program.
San Antonio Readers.......2006-05-04
This book has been selected for the 2006 "One Book - One San Antonio" event, during which every reader in San Antonio will be encouraged to read and discuss this novel.
A Journey into the Hinterland of Memory.......2005-07-26
Santos' writing style is as enthralling as it is articulate, a language so alive that it immediately befriends the reader. At times this autobiography is more of a prose poem than a narrative: "On those chilly nights he slept in the open country, having heard stories of Texas ranchers shooting Mexicans they found on their property. To him, it all looked like high Coahuila desert land. There weren't many fences then, so you could walk long flat stretches of the parched land with only bird shadows for shade...it looked like home, only, he pointed out, there were more stones on the Texas side" (50).
Such lines are not surprising since Santos is also a poet, and we see this style reiterated throughout as he delves deeply into the family histories of his father and mother. Some of us may think we know old Southwestern cities like San Antonio, but Santos' takes us into a hinterland of Texas, and Coahuila, Mexico, that we have never seen, one where the strength of memory endures amid a pervading and eloquent tone of pastoral loneliness. At times Santos is hauntingly prescient, as when he speaks of viewing New York City's Twin Towers as dolmens -- upright tombs from prehistoric times.
Magical Realsim: An Extraordinary Explanation of Definition.......2002-02-09
So often the essence of Hispanic culture, especially when addressing Mexico, Central and South America, is referred to as "Magical Realism". Whether referring to the literature of Marquez, Allende, Arenas, the paintings of Kahlo, Rivera, Bravo, Marquez, Borges, or the music of Ginestera, et al - the unifying element usually refers to this genre. Few authors have been successful in describing the origins or even the meaning of the term...that is, until John Phillip Santos elegantly warm memoir PLACES LEFT UNFINISHED AT THE TIME OF CREATION. Santos revisits his history through the immediacy of immigrant (yet unaltered) Old Ladies, creating from their tales a lush, incendiary canvas of passion, faith, commitment, hardship, and resilience. He adroitly mixes the two languages (Spanish and English) with finesse, at times translating for the non-Spanish reader, and at times allowing the beauty of his Spanish phrases to sing for themselves. This book is a paean to the sanctity of the souls of the immigrants who have endured the agony of expatriation, who have entered El Norte to find, if not their fortunes, then their integrity as human beings. This beautifully written book should be on the shelves of the libraries of schools throughout the USA...but it should also be in the library of everyone who wonders about the beauty of the Hispanic heritage - which for lack of a better name we call Magical Realism.

A Must for Journalists Covering the Military!.......2003-06-26
I have thoroughly enjoyed the book, Pen & Sword: A Journalist's Guide to Covering the Military. The writing itself is crisp and reveals a patriotism not only to the United States and her fighting powers, but also to journalism and the discovery of great stories.
The author, Ed Offley, carefully constructs just what the title says - a guide to covering the military. He provides basic background to all the armed forces as well as information as to how to learn more. He gives an ethnographer's perspective into how to prepare to enter whichever military branch one is interested in, along with a news writer textbook's steps into what a journalist should do once one is in the field.
Offley peppers his text with his own "Ouch!" and "Need I request applause?" kind of experiences from his two-plus decades of service. Other journalists' mistakes and successes are also case studies from which a prospective military journalist can learn.
Offley's text is timely, including recommendations for covering the war on terrorism. It is also solid, couching examples in military media history from WWI to today.
With the current media coverage of Persian Gulf War II or the Iraqi Freedom War, I can't help but question if many of the journalists Americans are hearing from on a daily basis haven't taken Offley's handbook with them. To be sure, the journalists will be able to relate to Offley's work upon their return, and they'll be ready to produce a second edition, this one informing on the next generation of military-in-combat coverage!
A good primer for reporters & civilians alike!.......2003-01-13
As more & more of our news, since 9/11, has been about the War on Terrorism; as our fighting men & women gear up for battle; as our politicians have raised the idea of the Draft again, I know I need information about how our journalists' report military news. I also want to be able to identify the rank of a speaker, the designation of a unit, & the language of the military, & I want to know when reporters make mistakes (& in their efforts for eye-catching headlines, they do!)
PEN & SWORD is not only for military reporters, it also helps civilians understand the basics of the military; the modern history of military reporting, from Vietnam, the Gulf War to today; how the news gets to us from the field; how the Pentagon handles its news; how the defense industry is reported, & when & why reporters must expose phoney heroes & keep secrets.
Certainly a book for every military student & all civilians interested in understanding, & giving our warriors their due.

An excellent survey.......2004-11-10
In 1872 the first national park was founded at Yellowstone, sparking a series of early parks designed to serve as natural history museums for visitors. Natural Museums is both a survey of early parks and a scholarly study of the national park system as a whole, examining the changing purposes and significance of the parks system for future generations. An excellent survey, Natural Museums should be pursued by any visitor to a US park.
