4 out of 5 stars Well-researched book on this little-known silent film star.......2007-04-02

It's an old book from 1981, but it is well written and definitely worth a look by any silent-movie fan. It is very well researched, and has lots of photos. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that all the photos were sepia-toned instead of crisp black-and-white.

There's not much information on Marguerite's early life, but her Broadway career and of course her silent career are well covered. At the time the book was written, only two of her films were known to exist, so the author could not screen much, but he had seen many of her films when they were originally screened!

Marguerite was really Mary Pickford's only rival during the 1910s, but she had no ambition to be a producer like Pickford. Like Pickford, she was very short and was type-cast in youg girl parts much of the time. After Marguerite got married, she retired from films within a couple of years because she was tired of working and her husband didn't want her working in Hollywood. She did come out of retirement once for an independently-produced film.

She had a very happy 10+ years of married life in New Orleans before her husband (who owned a small arline in the 1920s and 1930s) was killed in a plane crash. She took over as CEO of the airline for about 4 years before she sold it and retired for the second time.

This book contains a filmography, plus photos from many of her stage plays and movies. I can highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars ok at best.......2007-08-05

Some of the confessions are good but 90% of them are boring crap tha you hear everyday. Buy it if it's dirt cheap.

      5 out of 5 stars A voyeristic treat.......2007-07-23

This book is an exciting ride of emotions. You tap into the secret lives of complete strangers. It's fun not even knowing their real name and yet you know their deepest darkest secrets...it could be written by someone you even know. :) How exciting! 5stars!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you wanting more!.......2007-07-03

I read this book all the way through the minute I got it. Now I occasionally when bored go back and pick a random page just for fun, I usually end up sitting down and reading half of it all over again because it is just so...enthralling! nothing like it, it is not like postsecret in the sense of no pictures, its more like reading 1 entry out of a thousand peoples diaries.

3 out of 5 stars "Xylophones Are My Only Friend.".......2007-02-24

I picked this book up in a bookstore, and now I kind of wish I hadn't. These confessions come from an anonymous web site, and while some are hilarious, many are depressing. The positive about this book is that it is very reassuring, in that the vast majority of readers are exceptionally normal compared to the people doing the things in this book, while on the negative side, reading this is borderline creepy in that it ventures into parts of the human psyche that maybe are best left unexplored (at least in public.)

Here are some of the more notable snippets I discovered:

"I have a velvet robe and smoke a pipe with bubbles. I feel unstoppable when I wear it."

"I have a mitten phobia. Anytime anyone wears knit mittens, and tries to touch my arm or any part of my exposed skin with them, I freak out and run."

"I fantasize about having tuberculosis. Every time I cough, I check for blood. It's so sexy and I know I would have lots of attention if I had TB."

      "Xylophones are my only friend."

      ...and my very favorite...

"I forged a 'free pie' coupon at Marie Callender's, and gave it to my wife. I didn't tell her it was a forged coupon, and she got arrested. Bail is $750, and I can't afford it, so she's still in County Jail. Sorry, honey!"

This book is frequently depressing, often disturbing, strangely mesmerizing, and totally scary. It is unvarnished, and while these were consensual confessions, it frequently seems wrong to read them, even if they are anonymous.

5 out of 5 stars Grab your belly and slap your knee.......2007-01-02

I LOVE this book. It was one of my recommendations from Amazon. From the book description and the reviews, I knew I had to get it. When I first got it, my husband and I sat in the bed reading (and cackling) together over so many of the entries- there was a lot of, "Oh my God- did you read this one?" After reading from it together that one night, we began to fight over it. One of us would get it, read from it, and hide it from the other. Luckily, it is quite addictive which makes for a quick read. Now that we have both finished it, it sits in our guest bathroom. So many of the entries are super short- some are one liners, and you can flip to any part of the book, and start reading. It has lead to many a person spending much longer in the restroom than necessary- and everyone comments on it. Though some of the entries are slightly disturbing and some just downright baffling- for the most part, they are grab your belly, and slap your knee funny. You will not regret buying this book!

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but - As Yet, Nothing Better.......2004-10-08

I assign this as one of two textbooks in teaching Compensation Administration in graduate school.

While it has undergone 9 revisions, the attempts to update it to today's compensation world are not adequate. Far too little is here concerning internet usage, for example.

But perhaps its greatest shortcoming is in its glancing treatment of group incentive plans as a key means to unlock workforce potential. It is a glaring and unforgivable gap.

If anybody out there knows of a better fundamental compensation textbook, I'd love to hear about it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the textbooks.......2004-03-10

Compared to the other major textbooks out there, especially
the better reviewed book by "M" this is by far the more useful.
When I need to find something practical, like the Federal Evaluation System for example, or Multiple Linear Regression as a job evaluation tool, 95% of the time it is in Henderson and it is very well documented. Both these topics are barely touched on in the other major texts which I also own.
From a guy with a Ph.D. and 30 years of paying my bills with
comp information, give me Henderson any day.

        2 out of 5 stars Painful!.......2002-12-10

There is nothing practical about this book. It is a looooong, purely theoretical torture with only a few examples that don't work too well in the real world. I had to buy it for one of my graduate classes and here I am three months later even more clueless than I was when I started. This book is very boring, painful to read. It doesn't help that the author is clearly biased in favor of traditional HRM and refuses to give much room to more modern thinking. The exercise book is a nightmare. The exercises are either impossibly difficult and time-consuming because the textbook does not offer valuable guidance for any practical problems, or they are an absolute waste of time - students basically have to copy a chapter. I could go on like this forever. In a nutshell: buy this book if you have to, but sell it as soon as you can.

        3 out of 5 stars Uninformative Drivel!.......2001-09-07

This text was a quagmire of unreadable editorial comments! I purchased this book for a Human Resource class. I gained more knowledge from my fellow students than I did from this book. Defiantely skip it!

                            5 out of 5 stars Warm tales.......2002-01-02

What a delight this little book is! Within the space of only 151 pages of standard typeface, Alice Taylor has told many a tale, charmed us with her warmhearted stories from her childhood.

4 out of 5 stars Ashes only half the story.......2000-03-28

If Angela's Ashes and it's clones is your only taste of Ireland during the economic hard times, you're only getting half the story. This best seller speaks of the Ireland our grandparent's held dear to their hearts. It's short vignette structure makes it an excellant read for those using public transportation. Warning: people who feel good writing must be driven by inner turmoil will hate this book. To all others Taylor's work is breath of fresh air!

                            5 out of 5 stars Aaaaaaaaaaahhh!.......1999-09-23

I laughed, I cried, I remembered my own childhood in County Ireland as I ran barefoot through the daisies. I especially loved the bit about 'Old Dan'who loves to be near children. I knew a guy JUST like that when I was seven. Alice Taylor's book is a TRIUMPH. It is nothing less. We need more books about the poverty and ignorance of Ireland, written by an ordinary housewife like Alice, in her deceptively accessible style. In these weary times, her book is like three hundred milligrammes of morphine to a man with a headache. She deserves the pulitzer! Well done Alice!!

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhh! Life as it should be lived........1999-01-08

If you love the simple life (not to be confused with easy), nature, simple people and their idiosyncracies, then you will love this book. Alice Taylor takes us back to the communal farm life of Ireland. She "shows" us vividly how she grew up in County Cork Ireland in a rural farming community where the community came before the individual; unheard of in our current paradigm. Everything that nature had to offer was used in daily life, including the grease from cooked geese to oil leather boots. Life was about pulling your weight, helping your neighbor, integrity, and respecting God and His creations. This book sooths my soul and slows me down. If you live a busy "city" life, but long for nature and simplicity, I highly recommend this book. It will make you smile and comfort your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN A WARM IRISH BREAKFAST ON A COLD, MISTY MORNING.......1996-12-31

I'd rather read this book than have Irish bread w. freshly whipped butter, w. farm-fresh eggs, tomato, sausage and Irish breakfast tea! And that's a lot! This affectionate novel is a jewel. A very special woman wrote this book and shared with us her very special childhood. If you're Irish, of Irish descent, have been to Ireland, or enjoy a charming, well-written, enchanting true tale, you'll love this book and keep a copy and recommend it to loved ones. Did you enjoy the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE books as a child? Or have you read, THE ROAD FROM COORAIN by Jill Ker Conway? Then you'll truly enjoy this book

                                Product Description

School in the Park is an innovative museum-based educational effort to engage students in their community during the school day. Since 1999 several hundred students have been educated each year in museums and the zoo in San Diego. This is more than a field trip, it is changing the way that education is provided. Challenging the Classroom Standard Through Museum-Based Education: School in the Park presents the experience of School in the Park from the perspective of different disciplines—oral language, reading, writing, social studies, math, science, and the arts—to determine how students are learning content within museums and the zoo. It provides a number of examples, case studies, references, scenarios, and recommendations for teaching and learning outside of the traditional classroom. The perspectives of teachers, museum educators, and students are represented. Importantly, this book offers ideas that readers can use in their own communities, ranging from long-term partnering with cultural institutions to one-day trips, to ensure that students have authentic experiences with the curriculum. With the current increased focus on accountability and achievement, less attention and importance is given to community-based learning experiences. This book demonstrates the viability of merging formal and informal learning and using community venues as an extension of the classroom. All those interested in and charged with educating children will find this book useful in exploring powerful learning experiences that occur outside traditional classroom settings.

                                        Book Description

Men of Honor contains more than 100 official citations for bravery above and beyond the call of duty along with several eyewitness acounts such as the following excerpt: ... When we approached the area, Captain Pless asked the crew, "you all with me?" He knew the answer would be yes. As we flew on, we saw four U.S. personnel laying on the beach and around them, not less forty or fifty armed Viet Cong. They, the V.C., were beating the helpless personnel. As we flew over the group of people, one of the beach waved to us, and for his efforts got a rifle butt in the face. The V.C. were too close to the Americans to safely fire at them, but the V.C. were killing them anyway, so Captain Pless ordered the right door gunner, Gunnery Sergeant Poulson, to fire on them. It took only a short burst to send the V.C. running for cover. When Captain Pless saw this, he immediately rolled in hot with rockets and guns. The smoke from our W.P. rockets obscured the V.C. who were running when we started our attack, but Captain Pless continued to fire into the smoke, displaying the most remarkable airmanship I have ever seen in my eighteen months in country as an air crewman. As crewchief of the aircraft, and knowing its capabilities, I couldn't believe what he was making that belo do, but when the smoke started to clear, I saw bodies laying everywhere . . . Along with the above there are short biographies of all thirty-eight men, newspaper articles, and photographs. Men of Honor is a look at only a few of the many heroes of the United States Marine Corps: Kenneth D. Bailey, Harvey C. Barnum, John Basilone, Gregory Boyington, Martin L. Brandtner. Evans F. Carlson, Justice M. Chambers, Raymond G. Davis, Joseph Donovan, Merritt A. Edson, Wesley L. Fox, Robert Murray Hanson, John L. Hopkins, Louis R. Jones, Howard V. Lee, William G. 4 out of 5 stars Great read for the military buff and especially Marines.......2007-06-28

I was recently back east and visited the new Marine Corp Museum and thats when I purchased this book. Now I'm a Marine so I'm prejudiced but my only disappointment in this book was it was and is more historic on the individual Marines decorated for valor and not as personal on the acts they performed. I enjoy reading what men like this have done. The citations are in here but they are so 'perfectly' and 'formally' written they do not do justice to the feats these brave men accomplished. Its a privilege to read about them just wish it was more down to earth.

Adam Garfinkle convincingly demonstrates that the antiwar movement, even at its radical height, was of marginal value and at times actually proved counterproductive to stopping the Vietnam War.

Garfinkle debunks one of the great myths of the Vietnam era, that the antiwar movement in any way hastened the end of our involvement there. As the author notes, much of the reason for the almost universal acceptance of this view is because we are so used to hearing it, and because on a certain level we want to believe that outraged Americans can and did change the course of history. Garfinkle points to a number of Harris and Gallup polls from the 1960s which clearly demonstrate that if there was anything more hated than the war itself, it was the antiwar movement. He also details how this rage on the part of the "silent majority" put Richard Nixon into office, which gave America four more years of war and another 25,000 dead American soldiers. A wonderful book, rich with detail and original insight.

                                          Book Description

Forest destruction throughout the world poses significant risks. Not only are forests a source of valuable timber and non-timber products, but they also provide important environmental services that help sustain life on Earth. However, only rarely do beneficiaries pay for the services they receive, resulting in low incentives to conserve forests, and limiting opportunities for rural development.

Market-based approaches are thought to offer considerable promise as a means to promote forest conservation, and as a new source of income for rural communities. However, it has proven difficult to translate the theory into practice. Based on extensive research and case studies of markets for biodiversity conservation, watershed protection and carbon sequestration, this book demonstrates how payment systems can be established in practice, their effectiveness and their implications for the poor.

This state-of-the-art review of emerging markets for forest environmental services will be vital for decision-makers and professionals as well as for researchers, teachers and students of environmental economics and forestry.
