    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2007-07-25

The author starts by recounting her life story, and how she came to love sailing and the nature of the sea. She beautifully narrates how she chose her sailing boats, of races she's done, and of the wild life at sea. I very much enjoyed her encounters with whales and dolphins. I was also mesmerized by her journeys alone in the middle of the ocean, and her relentless ferocity in pursuing her dreams.

The book ends with the Vendee-Globe, a nonstop, 26,000-mile race that she completed alone in 94 days in 2001. She was only 24-year-old and came in second place. This was her first attempt. Quite an astonishing feat!
This book was a very inspirational reading; a witness to what can be achieved when one follows his or her dreams. I now want to buy a sailing boat and go sailing around the world! And fly around the world too!

4 out of 5 stars Good book. Not a great book........2005-09-29

A good story, and a good read, but seeming to lack in the richly woven details that would make this more than a somewhat flat recounting of the course of events. There are certainly dramatic moments, but it seems they are told in a way that cruises right past the tension, drama, or emotion of the moment. Compare with Lundy's "Godforsaken Sea": he will leave a sailor clinging to the overturned hull of a half-sunk boat in the stormy, near-frozen Southern Ocean for most of a book. He will trap you *inside* such a boat. The difference is not just the particular situations. MacArthur was certainly in plenty of peril at various points, but there's a difference between mentioning that one got quite bruised on the last page and being put into a situation where you're hanging from a thin rope in 40 knots winds 80 feet off the deck and actually feeling the pain of getting each one of those bruises. Often she will set up a situation which contains a bit of tension or drama and then almost matter-of-factly tell you how it turned out, deflating the anticipation of an absorbing anecdote. Telling the reader that something was difficult or that she was tired doesn't communicate what it was like to be there. Saying that something was frustrating isn't the same as getting the reader to feel that frustration. That's what a good writer does, and that's what is missing here. Where Lundy puts you there, MacArthur tells you that, yes, she was there. It's almost as if, having finished the book, I feel I've read the back cover and am ready to dive into what sounds like it ought to be a riveting story.

Often I was left wanting more (technical) details about the learning, sailing, and promotion she was doing, how she actually did what she did, not the mere fact that she did it or that it happened. Then, at one of the most dramatic points in the story, it isn't perhaps made *quite* clear enough why MacArthur is doing what she is (How will this messing around solve the problem? What *is* the problem?), and what she is doing is full of fine detail that makes too little sense without a good picture or, perish the thought, an engineering diagram. The diagram that *is* present in the book, and could have made the gist of things plain, were it just a tiny bit more complete, doesn't. By the time I figure it out, the dramatic potential is wasted. Argh.

Worth reading for those with an interest in sailing or MacArthur, and surely inspirational for many readers, but be prepared to use your imagination to fill in the gaps that ought not to be there.

    5 out of 5 stars A Real Cinderalla Story.......2005-03-09

I've always been a big fan of sailing and when my dad told me that Ellen MacArthur had just broken the record for around the world alone I was amazed. And when later on I learned that she was one of two people to do this in a multihull, that's right out of the five people that have attempted to circumnavigate the world in a multihull only two have actually succeeded. The most recent one of them being a five foot two, twenty something, British girl. All these tidbits made me hungry to learn more about this intrepid woman. Two days later I was immersed in her autobiography.
Immediately I found Ellen's story to be every thing I thought it would be, and more. It's amazing how dedicated she has been to sailing throughout her life even though she was born in a tiny landlocked town. I myself have always been a sailor. I didn't save for my first boat like Ellen did but still, it's a passion that is shared by most of my family so they've been very supportive, much like Ellen's mom and dad. Still I felt like I cold sort of relate to her, which is one of the reasons why I loved this book so much. Even if you don't really like or know a lot about sailing, like my sister, you would still like it. It's truly amazing that at the age of twenty-four she not only finished the Vendee Globe (race around the world alone) but finished in second place on her first attempt. I reffer to her completing the race as an accomplishment because in that one race, out of the twenty-four entrants a mere fifteen finished the race, and aside from this year on average one person has died each race. Her perseverance has made an enormous difference in the way that I look at life. I"ve read and reread her book and have become hooked. In my spare time I'd check up on what she was doing. Ellen MacArthur Has become my hero, because of her book I know that it is possible for a five foot two, twenty something British girl to become a knight and one of the worlds most renown sailors. Her book is an inspiring tale with all the ups, downs and plot twists that accompany any good book. Taking on the World is a real live fairy tale, one in which Cinderella goes by the name of Ellen MacArthur.

    3 out of 5 stars a most remarkable woman.......2004-01-03

This was an eagerly awaited book for fans of Ellen Macarthur. She is a paradigm for what a person can achieve who follows her dream. Her tenacious determination and courage are an inspiration to anyone of any sex. That she achieved what she has achieved as a young woman 5'3" tall and "only nine stone" is extraordinary. This 350 page autobiographical book lays out her childhood and sailing career culminating in her second place finish in the 2001 Vendee Globe singlehanded yachting race. Unfortunately, the book was obviously rushed to publication and Rowland White , her editor has done a terrible job with her manuscript. Ironically some of the best and most thrilling writing in the book are the unedited emails sent by Ellen from her various races . The book is replete with excessive use of strident histrionic superlatives and by the end of the book the reader is exhausted from beaten over the head with the likes of "Incredible!" and "Fantastic!".The book is laden with unnecessary and pointless details that just bore the reader and clog the narrative. Ellen Macarthur stated early in the book that she has always wanted to write and by the end of the book the reader is convinced that this is a woman who could do anything she put her mind to achieve. Her flashes of brilliant narration demonstrate real talent but this jejeune book does not do justice to her as yet unrealized potential. The book is well illustrated and the last quarter of the book dealing with the Vendee Globe race is hard to put down. I along with other reviewers would have preferred a more thoughtful book evincing insight into the life of this doughty Derbyshire lass.

5 out of 5 stars Worth your while.......2003-04-04

I read the recent article in National Geographic Adventure magazine and then I needed the book to get the full story. I thought the book was very good. It really showed the drive and dedication required, and the path a person needs to take to achieve something in her mid twenties that most pro sailers are lucky to do at the top of their game. Inspirational! My only wish was that more of the inter-personal side was revealed.

      2 out of 5 stars Mixed up.......2007-09-29

This book has many things to recommend it, but many more not to. The oddest thing is when Dardis describes Keaton's second wife (twice he says she was a very attractive brunette - actually she was rather witchy-looking) and he goes on to say that she dumped him when she'd had enough of his drinking. Not true. She was a golddigging conniver who Keaton actually got rid of himself. He stopped drinking once he had.

Many other factual mistakes, but worse than those are his take on Buster. He seems not to respect him much. Why write this bio? He talks little of the artistry of the man.

1 out of 5 stars Many Factual Errors.......2007-08-03

I have read and own many books on Buster Keaton. This is the worst I have seen. Many "facts" are in error (such as who starred in The Buster Keaton Story, etc.) and that casts suspicion on everything else. Since I already knew a great deal about Keaton, this book offended me in what it got wrong. Make sure this is not the ONLY reference you read of The Great Stone Face, it's pretty much junk.

      2 out of 5 stars Don't bother..........2006-06-26

This book has many factual mistakes that are just stupid mistakes such as confusing the order of Keaton's sons. There were only 2 of them so how hard can it be to get the order right?
Also, Dardis writes things that seems rather unlikely to have happened then does not back the "facts" in his notes such as Keaton's second wife prostituting herself at the Biltmore Hotel with his sister's help! What the hell? One shocking thing he writes is some comment about Keaton "may have" lost the tip of his finger in a clothes wringer. What's this "may have"? I don't think there's any question about it. Keaton himself said he crushed it in a clothes wringer and back then something like that was a common occurrence. The one good thing about this book is it has excellent pictures-pictures I've never seen in any other books about Keaton.

      1 out of 5 stars It's Garbage!.......2003-02-14

There's a factual mistake on nearly every page of this book. Dardis is obsessed with Keaton's drinking, spending some 80 pages of the book on this subject, while cutting the last 25 years of Keaton's life to a mere 20 pages.
In short, this Dardis book is uniformed, inaccurate, unbalanced, and unhinged. However, despite all this, the Dardis bio is still somethat superior on the Marion Meade book, which is even worse. A solid Keaton bio has yet to be written.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent biography.......2001-12-06

I read this book about 10 years ago and I thought it was very well written. It went into a lot of detail about his life which I thought was very interesting and well researched. I'd recommend this to anyone who'd like to read a good biography about Keaton.

      Book Description

The silent screen's "Great Stone Face," and arguably its most prodigious comedian, Buster Keaton is famous for films such as The General and The Navigator. Dardis traces both the development and decline of this great performer with compassion and accuracy, from his childhood in vaudeville to his glory days as a silent screen star and MGM contract actor, his descent into alcoholism, and his twilight years as a nearly forgotten relic of the era.

Tom Dardis is professor emeritus of English at John Jay College of the City University of New York.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book!.......2007-03-22

Erik Satie is one of the most fascinating names in the world of music. His complex personality does indeed require a deep study and extensive research.
From that point of view, this is the essential Erik Satie book. It's a complete study on the man from letters that were collected and translated (a task to be applauded), including numerous pictures to die for. From the first page to the last, it's clearly seen that the whole project was a labor of love, dedicated to a man that respected and was faithful to the field of art. A beautiful book.

It is an easy read and has some helpful information for any business owner or credit professional.

3 out of 5 stars Legal Collections Made Easy.......2003-05-09

This book is a quick read, but if you've done collections before, then you won't find much help in it. The author is well-expereinced in legal collections. That's her expertise. A consumer and corporate small to medium balance collector won't find this book that useful. It gives a lot of legal tips and how to write promissory notes, but for the majority of us who don't have time for this, it doesnt' tell us anything we don't already know. She has a debtor excuse section, but she writes it more in theory than someone who has done it a lot. She also doesn't tell us anything new to use in our repetoire of overcoming, "check is in the mail." I wouldn't rate this a great book, I find Tim Paulsen & The Sher brothers' books better and more practical. I'd rate her book "fair."

After nearly 40 years in the trenches, Frank Deford's niche in the pantheon of modern sportswriters is secure, making the subtitle--I'm Just Getting Started--of his latest collection (tongue-in-)cheekily optimistic. Irony has always been one of Deford's best weapons; by putting his award-winning magazine work from Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, and Vanity Fair beside his award-winning commentaries from National Public Radio, The Best of... shows how adeptly he's wielded it in two very separate mediums. Still, reading the recent magazine work along with selections from two decades of radio broadcasts--Deford insists the latter are really nothing more than written columns read aloud--makes for an odd coupling that has you wishing for a lot more of the printed Deford. Not that there's anything wrong with the radio version. Deford's commentaries are timely, pithy, clever, opinionated, and insightful, but they're ultimately as ephemeral as the airwaves they were delivered on. His magazine journalism, on the other hand, is anything but ephemeral. It is work that is rarely less than elegant, and often just plain exquisite.

His long looks at Bobby Knight, Bill Russell, and a former Connecticut high school football star who commits suicide at 24 are breathtaking. So is his exploration of University of Arkansas basketball coach Nolan Richardson, spun out by Deford as a play in four acts. His intertwined profile of Roger Bannister--the first four-minute miler--and Sir Edmund Hillary--the first to climb Everest--is a tour de force, as is his personal journey into the world of bowling. These are all pieces to be savored again and again for their expansiveness, circumspection, reportage, heart, style, and wit. They remind you what is Best about a writer of Deford's caliber in ways the constraints of radio can't pull in quite as clearly. --Jeff Silverman

        Book Description

I Believe that professional wrestling is clean, and everything else is fixed.

Whether Frank Deford is the voice you hear on National Public Radios Morning Edition or the name you see in the Newsweek byline, you are sure to be entertained with the irreverent musings of this much acclaimed sports mind.

Called the worlds greatest sports-writer by GQ magazine, Deford possesses a witty and poignant take on the world of athletics that has earned him a wealth of fans, from the most ardent sports enthusiast to the greenest novice.

In this best of the best compilation, Deford creates insightful, richly drawn yarns on the human drama and occasional high comedy of athletic competition. The Best of frank Deford relates not only to the specific and spectacular events that make up great sportswriting, but reflects through sports the larger world of American culture. I try to maintain a certain balance between being serious and humorous. And I take a lot of chances. Ultimately, I try to keep people surprised. Frank Defords twelfth book is a grand collection of his most vivid caricatures, colorful anecdotes, and out-of-left-field observations on the often humbling and humorous nature of sport.

The Best of Frank Deford: Im Just Getting Started is a treasure of Defords best writing and will make an instant fan of any reader.

For anyone who enjoys Deford's witty, literate commentaries on sports and society-or those who haven't had the pleasure of reading his work-this book is a great introduction!
I have to agree that Deford's best work is found in his longer magazine articles. His work for 'Sports Illustrated' alone could fill a few volumes, and the best pieces in this volume are those 'SI' stories already mentioned by other reviewers. Personally, I would have preferred more articles and fewer NPR essays. The shorter, 'intended for broadcast' commentaries are sort of a 'Reader's Digest Condensed' version of Deford's wit and wisdom-tantalizing glimpses that leave the reader wishing he had more room to elaborate!
I especially recommend "When There Were Still Elusive Barriers"(about Bannister and Hillary), and "Got to Do Some Coachin'" (the brilliant play that encapsulizes the turbulent personal life of Arkansas basketball coach Nolan Richardson).

1 out of 5 stars Stale, Trite, Miasmic mess .......2006-05-03

One of the more boring and ill-thought out books I have read this decade. Deford is somewhat of a moron, yet thinks he is the gift to planet earth. I would not recommend reading this at all. I can't believe I gobbled it up at a used book store.

        5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment!.......2003-01-02

Frank Deford is a most articulate, persuasive, engaging writer---perhaps the finest sports journalist writing today.

The collection of articles and commentaries contained in "I'm Just Getting Started" are from 1980 to 1999 and touch on every aspect of sports.

You get insight, irony, humor, commentary, entertainment, nostalgia and optimism as you turn the pages---all delivered in a most literate manner.

The essay on Bill Russell alone is worth the price of admission. "Frank Deford Goes Bowling" is an intriguing take on a subject seldom written up in sports pages.

Enjoyable for more than sports fans.

        5 out of 5 stars Intelligence Personified.......2000-08-10

Frank Deford is a brilliant writer, not to mention, probably the single greatest sports' writer on the planet. He just takes sports' writing to a higher level. The Best of Frank Deford will prove this.

This book showcases some of Deford's best work as a journalist. Although some of the articles are a little dated, his style and amazing use of language still shines. The pieces included in this book are easily some of the best writng available. Any inspiring journalist could learn a great deal from this collection of writings.

Deford never holds anything back, and he is never afraid to speak his mind. I personally enjoyed the in-depth look at Bobby Knight. But, there are many other treasures in this candid book.

Overall, this is an excellent book and quite a fast read. Deford's witty and extremely articulate writing style allows you to flow right through the book. This is a masterpiece of writing, and a true pleasure for any sports' fan. The Best of Frank Deford is simply the best.

3 out of 5 stars Flashes of vintage Deford.......2000-08-09

Frank Defors is arguably one of the most gifted sports writers and commentators of our times. He is able to stand back and see the big picture. this compilation of Deford's NPR spots and columns spans a wide array of sports and sports figures. I think he is best when he profiles the people in sports. There are pieces on Pete Rose, Bobby Knight, Bill Russell, Keith VanHorn and those we may not know as well. What I like best is his obvious affection for and knowledge of the history of sports. The pieces in this book ars short enough that you can skip the ones which don't grab you immediately. His outlook is wry and affectionate. Some of these pieces are Deford at his best. The majority are merely good.

5 out of 5 stars Last Word on This Plane.......2003-01-06

This book is the last word on the F-14. I wanted to read more about the 79 F-14's that were sold to Iran before the fall of the Shah and how they performed against Soviet supplied Iraqi aircraft during the 1980-1988 Iran - Iraq war but nothing was mentioned

        3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2002-03-30

Jane's did a great job on with what is new with the F-14D but lacked the flying characteristics, which would've been great to read what Turkey drivers say. The virtual missions were "ok" but I felt that they didn't expound enough, which me wanting more information.

I liked the avionics update but I'd wish they would expound more on the flying characteristics. (Flight envelope, landing..etc) This mission scenario wasn't bad or great.

5 out of 5 stars Good information & amazing dogfights........2000-09-16

From my opinion, I think this is 1 of the best book about the F-14 Tomcat. The information provided are satisfying & the pictures are cool & are rare to find anywhere else. The amazing part of this book is the mission which the Tomcat flew, with jaw breaking dogfights & bombing missions. The book also tells you the weapons that are in used with the F-14 Tomcat like the Sparrow, Sidewinder, Pheonix & the M61 canon, & lets not forget the leser guided bombs. It also shows you the differences in the Tomcat models like the A,B & D but just simple information about that. The book shows you the sensors used whcih I think it's interesting just simple background about it. Most of all, this book is going to be a valuable aset to the F-14 Tomcat fans. They still say, Tomcat rules!

4 out of 5 stars Looking for updates? Look to Jane's.......2000-03-11

There seems to be a glut of updated information on the F-14 Tomcat and its variants, but leave it to Jane's to bring these bits of information to light.

Jane's latest book on the F-14 was presented in a format that was a welcome change from the usual history of design/technical study/current activities/future of the aircraft storyline that most books offer. This same old song and dance was changed by adding the simulated missions and letting the reader know more of what it is like to fly and fight in the Tomcat rather than present it in a 3rd person "friend of a friend" method.

The use of color photos throughout was also an added bonus--most publications have a few color photos, but the rest in black and white. The sidebars were also wonderful.

There were some low points, however. The fold-out views were disappointing and the cockpit details were poor renderings--not photos--and weren't labelled. The Tomcat's ability to carry the AIM-120 AMRAAM was never even mentioned. There was also a glaring error on page 55 where an obvious F-14A with the old engines was captioned as an F-14D with new engines. I was surprised that Jane's did not catch this error. It would also have been nice if a listing of the current remaining F-14 squadrons and deployments as of publication date was included.

Otherwise, I felt the book was very thorough and was very good at giving the reader the inside details (both mechanical and theory of physics regarding the Tomcat in combat). It was well-balanced and quite creative.

        Anytime, baby...!

4 out of 5 stars Top Flight, Top Gun.......2000-02-03

This book starts slowly, with a wealth of technical detail about the F-14, but the perseverant reader is rewarded with the gripping flight scenarios that follow. Although I agree with the posted amazon reviewer that the book lacks an in-depth history of the development of the aircraft, the technical detail covered in the initial pages makes up for the omission of the history. While I personally found the first few pages tough going, they provide detail to whet the appetites of the most discerning military enthusiast and set the stage for the flight scenarios. The pacing at the start and the lack of history mean I cannot give this book top marks.

The author certainly gains his stride in the semi-fictional missions. The mission storylines draw you in as well as a good thriller. As the reader you are right there in the cockpit with Elvis, Hurl, Sonic and Green trying to use the capabilities of the F-14 to tactical advantage. It is a minor pity the scenarios weren't set over Kosovo thereby gaining an added air of realism, but the Bosnian setting is thoroughly believable and adds to the tension.

The pictures throughout the book are stunning and the author makes the point of balancing the formidable capabilities of the F-14 with its equally well known failings.

For those who wish to fly but don't get the chance, this book let's your imagination take you there: a top flight with the Top Gun.

            Book Description

Since antiquity, bats have been misunderstood and shrouded in mystery. Given misnomers such as fledermaus ("flying mouse") and murciegalo ("blind mouse"), these nocturnal flying mammals were even classified as primates by the great Carl Linnaeus, based on his knowledge of the anatomy of large Old World fruit bats. In this beautifully illustrated volume, bat specialist Rick A. Adams delves into bats' true nature and the roles these fascinating ledurblaka ("leather flutterers") play in the natural history and ecology of the Rocky Mountain West.

Bats of the Rocky Mountain West begins with a general discussion of bat biology and evolution as well as regional physiography and zoogeography. In addition, Adams describes—based on the results of extensive research—the behavior and ecology of the 31 species of bats found in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Naturalists and biologists alike will benefit from the detailed species descriptions, color photographs and illustrations, distribution maps, and echolocation sonograms. Bats of the Rocky Mountain West is a unique and valuable reference for professional bat biologists, naturalists, and wildlife enthusiasts interested in the conservation and ecology of bats in the region.
