A good book about Diana.......2000-11-05
Although this book is now outdated, it gives a great insight on Diana's wardrobe preferences, her views on food additives, and her many beauty treatments that she used to indulge in. I enjoyed the book, and I often check it out to remind me of Diana's exciting life.

Wonderfully delicious..........2006-08-23
I bought this book back in college after seeing the movie Body Double. I highly recommend picking up this movie. This reminds me of the way DVD's are now with their extra content and special features.
Pick this one up. You won't be sorry.

Book Description
Now in paperback, the New York Times bestseller-with over 91,000 copies in print-that takes you behind closed doors to see what really goes on in America's sororities ver wonder what sorority life is really like? In Pledged, bestselling author Alexandra Robbins goes undercover to expose the dark side of collegiate sisterhood-the psychological abuse, hazing rituals, and widespread body image disorders-while at the same time introducing us to many of the intelligent, successful women within its ranks. The result is a compelling sociological exploration of the powerful influence that these organizations wield over young women today. With its fly-on-the-wall voyeurism and remarkable insight, Pledged paints a sharp-eyed portrait of the intriguing and paradoxical world of modern-day sororities.

not accurate.......2007-10-02
While an interesting read, I did not feel that this book was an accurate portrayal of sorority life. Yes, I am sure that there are some sororities like those in the book (obviously, or it would not have been written) but there are many more with so much to offer. I am a member of a sorority at a public university, and I have never experienced any sort of hazing. (After rush the executive board actually told us that an active member was not even allowed to ask us to pick up a dropped pencil!) I am also a Christian, and not once have I been pressured to go against my beliefs (getting drunk, dressing provocativly, etc).
Please do not base your opinion of sororities on this book!! Do some research and most importantly, find sorority members at the school you are interested in and ask them questions! Do not base your opinion of a sorority as a whole on one person and remember that we are human just like everyone else!
not always the case.......2007-09-25
i have read this and to tell you the truth not all sororities are like that and i would know I am a current sorority member and have been a me,ber of this sorority on 2 seperate campuses in two different areas of the country , one in Kentucky and currently i am at Iowa State. I have NEVER expirienced any form of hazing or have been pushed into dieting drinking excetera. i think that it is sad that sororities are given such a bad rap because from all the girls i know and the colleges i have been to it is so much a wonderful expirience of service and sisterhood. So dont take this book as the complete truth because there are us good sororities out there.
Boring and choppy.......2007-09-16
Nothing interesting happens in this book. NOTHING! I was hoping for some jaw dropping insight. Instead, the stories are mundane and trite. For example, in one sorority, the girls pressure another girl into breaking up with her boyfriend... that way they can all hang out more and she'll want to go out with them and flirt with boys. Oh that's crazy!!!11
A bit biased.......2007-09-07
I was hoping to read a fair and biased report on the activities of sororities, but was disappointed to find that the author was very biased in her opinions and didn't really show the opposite (not quite so dark) side of sororities. Also, the reading was a bit choppy due to the fact that the girls' stories were than "analyzed" by the author with information about similar events, facts, etc.
Unaccurate account of Sorority life.......2007-08-27
For those of you who think this tells the accurate portrayal of sorority life, Don't waste your time. To me this book was written by a cynical person who didn't fit in in college.
My sorority was not at all like the ones in this book and it is terrible that people now think that ALL sororities are like the ones in her book. She over exaggerates and gives false information. The sorority I am still apart of does not degrade any of it's members and hazing doesn't happen at all. I'm outraged at this book because non-greeks think they actually know what goes on...They have no idea.
Shame on her for lying...Shame on her for giving away secrets that have been passed down for 100's of years.
FOR PARENTS:
For those moms out there who are going to read this book to see if they should let their daughter join a sorority don't base it on this, because this information is embellished. The best thing to do is have your daughter go to different houses her fall semester and then in the Spring pledge, by then she will know what the sisters are like.
I'm so offended as a REAL sorority member that she generalized that all sorority members have eating disorders and do drugs and overweight people aren't allowed to join...My sorority did not base membership on looks or race. We had women from all over the world and of all shapes and sizes.
Please do not base your view of Greek life on this book.

Book Description
This is by a large degree the most comprehensive accounting of the games of this brilliant chess player. Presented are 2,543 of Alekhine's games, in an exhaustive catalog that is the result of many years of digging-an effort unparalleled in the history of chess game collections. Many of the games are annotated by Alekhine and 1,868 diagrams appear overall. The book includes games from his earliest correspondence tournaments in 1902 through his final match with Francisco Lupi at Estoril, Portugal, in January 1946.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific, colossal tome!.......2003-07-30
This book is everything Amazon's desription says. And it's a very solid hard-cover job, with excellent layout and printing. Some interesting biography bits prefacing each chapter were new even to a die-hard Alekhinbe fan like me.
Finally a book that does him justice. One could only wish that *all* the games were annotated, à la "Chess Stars" series (I have all four Tal volumes), but it's really hard to complain about a fine book like this.
Stupendous.......1999-09-20
This book is truly a marvelous book to have in my library. I have been collecting chess books since 1969 and despite having almost 500 chess books not much comes close. This book most clearly resembles the excellent two volume book on Rubinstein by John Donalson and Nicolay Minev. As big as a phone book this book does not easily fit on all bookshelves. The only caveat is that there could have been more anotated games. One example is that all the games from NY 1924 should have been annotated as Alekhine himself annotated all the games from the tournment and all of his games from that tournment should have been annnotated.
Excellent Chess Book!.......1999-03-01
This book is excellent! It is expensive but worth every penny! It would have been nice if it included some rare photos but this is very minor. Even if you own other works of Alekhine's this is still a good book to have because of it's completeness. The publisher has other chess books of this quality on chess masters such as Capablanca, Marshall, Steinitz and Reshevsky.
The best Alekhine's games collection so far........1998-10-05
This huge book is of a great value to the chess enthusiast and a must for the Alekhine admirer. It is really an exhaustive investigation work and better yet, with Alekhine's own annotations on games! We must be grateful to the authors on this fine work and to the publishers for the high quality edition...

Good, but way too short.......2007-03-23
This is a much more hopeful and truthful book then the George Washington Carver book written by Gary R. Kremer. I was just starting to enjoy reading this book when all of a sudden, it ended abruptly (it's only 104 pages long). Maybe someday someone will write a lengthy and deep biography on this kind and gentle man.
A Nice Complement to a fuller biography of Carver.......2006-03-16
George Washington Carver: His Life & Faith in His Own Words is a short book of biography and quotes from this great Christian man. The book is compiled and written by St. Louis author William Federer. This is a labor of love for Federer who remembers as a child receiving a book about Carver that inspired him to emulate the character traits of the former slave.
Did you know Missouri can count George Washington Carver as one of our own? After the death of his parents, George was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Moses Carver, residents of Diamond Grove Missouri. He attended school in Neosho, Missouri as well as a business college in Kansas City.
Carver's story is inspirational because of the incredible obstacles he had to overcome, and because of his deep faith in Jesus Christ. He was born into slavery, experienced the loss of most of his family, felt the sting of poverty, and encountered door-closing racism. However, before his life was over, Carver was an internationally known chemist who advised Presidents and Congress, and was offered jobs by prominent men like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. His great mission in life was to help bring education and moral uplift to those less fortunate.
Carver is best known for discovering hundreds of uses for the peanut, which in turn gave the post-Civil War South a soil-replenishing crop that could be turned into a viable economic future. His horticultural discoveries took place at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, led by Booker T. Washington. He would teach his students in the classroom, but also journey out to the poor farmers, instructing them on how to take care of the soil.
The particular focus of Federer's book is the spiritual life of Carver. By reading the private letters Carver sent to his friends, we are able to discover the spiritual depth and passion of the man. In 1921, Carver addressed the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee regarding the endless uses of the peanut. At the end of his address, the chairman asked:
"Dr. Carver how did you learn all of these things?"
Carver answered, "From an old book."
"What book?" asked the chairman.
Carver replied, "The Bible."
The chairman inquired, "Does the Bible tell about peanuts?"
"No, sir" Dr. Carver replied, "But it tells me about the God who made the peanut. I asked Him to show me what to do with the peanut, and He did."
Such anecdotes reveal two of the character traits of Carver. First, he had a deep respect for God and His Word. Second, he believed that hard work and personal industry was often the divine means by which God brought blessing to His people.
Carver's faith was rooted in Christ. He wrote to a friend saying, "Oh how I wish the people would awake up from their lethargy and come out soul and body for Christ." Speaking of his students, Carver said, `I want them to find Jesus, and make Him a daily and hourly part of themselves." When asked about the secret of his success in life, he responded by saying, "It is simple. It is found in the Bible, `In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths."
George Washington Carver was truly a great Christian and American citizen. This book by William Federer makes an excellent companion piece to some of the longer biographies of Carver. Put it in the hands of young men and women, and you will be giving them an opportunity to find inspiration from the life of a man committed to God.
