MY father and mother, Lord and Lady Yu Keng, and family, together with our suite consisting of the First Secretary, Second Secretary, Naval and Military Attaches, Chancellors, their families, servants, etc., - altogether fifty-five people, - arrived in Shanghai on January 2, 1903, on the S.S. "Annam" from Paris, where for four years my father had been Chinese Minister. Our arrival was anything but pleasant, as the rain came down in torrents, and we had the greatest difficulty getting our numerous retinue landed and safely housed, not to mention the tons of baggage that had to be looked after. We had found from previous experience that none of our Legation people or servants could be depended upon to do anything when travelling, in consequence of which the entire charge devolved upon my mother, who was without doubt the genius of the party in arranging matters and straightening out difficulties. When the launch from the steamer arrived at the jetty off the French Bund, we were met by the Shanghai Taotai (the highest official in the city), the Shanghai Magistrate and numerous other officials, all dressed in their official robes. The Taotai told my father that he had prepared the Tien Ho Gung (Temple of the Queen of Heaven) for us to reside in during our stay in Shanghai, but my father refused the offer, saying that he had telegraphed from Hong Kong and made all arrangements to go to the Hotel des Colonies in the French Concession.

I knew something was wrong when I saw this book bore the statement on the dedication page "contributed by Ed, Tim & Rodney." (Huh?)

The 1st world library is some sort of crank vanity reprint house (I know that sounds confusing), and they have no business producing books. In this case half the charm of the original edition lay in the black and white photographs that accompanied the text, inexplicably omitted here. I didn't bother trying to read this maimed edition -- realizing, after it was too late to return, that the pictures were left out was quite bad enough. I will not waste time trying to read this to learn what else is missing. I have ordered the book from another company.

                      Book Description

In Search of a Hero is one man's fantasy-fulfilled journey in his search of a childhood hero that has universal appeal. While unfolding the life of Tony Canadeo, a star for the Green Bay Packers in the 1940s, the author's journey wonderfully recreates that bygone era of professional football and the popular Green Bay Packers in particular.

As a group, these men represented perhaps the last in the tradition of hard-nosed fundamentally sound, underpaid yet dedicated professional football players. The time period Canadeo played (1941-52) the game was much simpler than the version we see today.

During the 1940s there was also an amazing bond between the underpaid players and their fans - particularly in the small city of Green Bay, where their heroes were playing teams from the huge metropolitan cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The unique connection was heightened by the influence of the elaborate sports pages of the Green Bay Press-Gazette and the colorful description of the game through radio (no television in this era). Such partnership could never exist today where rich elitist players are motivated by high salaries, who willingly leave their team and fans behind for high priced free agent contracts. The beloved players of the `40s and `50s played the game out of passion rather than profit.

When Canadeo joined the Packers in 1941, they were consistent winners. In fact, the Packers and Chicago Bears dominated the NFL throughout the 1920s, `30s and early `40s. But, midway in his playing career the team fell upon hard times. However, with the retirement of the great Don Hutson in the mid-40s, Canadeo became the undisputed star of the Packers for the rest of the decade. He stayed on for another three seasons with the Packers, into the early 1950s which was the dawn of the enormous popularity of professional football.

After his retirement as a player, Canadeo continued his relationship with the Packers for another 40 years as a member of the team's Board of Directors, creating the longest association anyone has ever had with the Packers. He also became a confidant and close friend of Green Bay's legendary coach, Vince Lombardi.

In the search for the hero of his youth, what the author would discover in gathering material for the man's life that covered far more than the years he played for the Packers is the search would lead him on a remarkable journey that would have significant meaning.

What is portrayed is the essence of the life of a real hero, made from determining and identifying characteristics that, as it turned out, reached far beyond the restricted boundaries of a football field. After reading this book, you may be convinced that Tony Canadeo may indeed be the "greatest Packer of them all." Certainly no man has ever given more loyalty, service and exemplary lifestyle!

                      3 out of 5 stars Outdated........2006-10-23

This book was great when I got it...10 years ago.

Although Mr. Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia is enjoyable to read, it is extremely outdated and there needs to be a new edition. For readers looking for some info on their favorite classic movie star, chances are you'll probably find a bio on him/her. But for recent actors, no luck.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book - but old.......2006-03-01

Note when ordering that there is only one version of this book - and it was first printed in 1994. And this is not apparent from the writeup on Amazon. I already had this book - but recently ordered two copies assuming it was a new version. I was very disappointed that it was the same book I already had. The fact that the book is so old and missing all movies and information from the past 10 years makes this not as worthwhile as one would expect from Maltin.

4 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC and CONCISE.......2004-08-06

As a confirmed habitual movie watcher, this book was a much-welcomed addition to my library. Actually, it never made it to my library, as I have it next to my favorite TV chair, right under the TV Guide. I've never seen anything else with such concise thumbnail bios, just the facts. Yes, many stars are not included, such a book would be impossible to pick up. I did miss some oldies such as Marge & Gower Champion. The content is 5-stars, but I deducted 1-star for the book's dire need of updating: additions such as Chris Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam, etc. But I wouldn't want to be the one to decide who gets removed to include these new additions!

5 out of 5 stars Great info on the stars.......2002-11-13

Leonard has done a great job on this. Tasty tidbits on the stars of yesterday and today. I have only one complaint, there are many of the old stars he did not include. Too bad.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but indispensable.......2002-08-17

Initially about a year ago I made the mistake of following the other reviews which panned the book, and did not buy it. I then gradually realized that some of my favorite short bios on IMDB.com were excerpted from Maltin's Encyclopedia. Of course at that point I bought it. There are few, if any, other volumes that quickly give you the sum-up and low-down on 2,000 movie industry people. To say the book has errors and omissions is to me ridiculous...a perfect book would cost a few thousand dollars. Meanwhile, IMDB.com is available as a backstop for searching out hundreds of thousands of details, which wouldn't fit in a reasonably sized volume anyway. Generally speaking, I've gone wrong far more often in rejecting something based on a review or an opinion about a book, movie, etc., than in consuming something recommended -- you can always bail out if a recommender was wrong.

I originally purchased this book when I was editing acrostic puzzles, as a reference book, but I find myself referring to it frequently even now, although no longer edit puzzles. It contains "career profiles of more than 2,000 actors and filmmakers, past and present" arranged alphabetically. It also contains "filmographies" for each actor. I'd recommend this book highly.

                              Book Description

the PATH In a world in which we are daily forced to make decisions that lead us either closer to or further from our goals, no tool is as valuable in providing direction as a mission statement -- a brief, succinct, and focused statement of purpose that can be used to initiate, evaluate, and refine all of life's activities.

Individuals and companies have recently been learning what history has demonstrated all along -- that people or groups with carefully defined missions have always led and surpassed those who have none. Yet the process of outlining that mission statement has been, up to now, an arduous one that all too few have committed the time, energy, and resources to undertake.

In The Path, Laurie Beth Jones, author of the national bestseller Jesus CEO, provides inspiring and practical advice to lead listeners through every step of both defining and fulfilling a mission. With more than ten years' experience in assisting groups and individuals, Jones offers clear, step-by-step guidance that help you create a mission statement in a matter of hours rather than a month or years.

Rich with humor, exercises, and case histories, The Path is essential listening for anyone seeking a lighter, clearer way in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Listen up, confused people! :).......2007-03-14

I am only part-way through the book, but I give it a high rating because it's quality so far. It offers both theory and practicality, and a "how to", along with plenty of examples; everything good teaching should do.
Now, I noticed that people that gave this book fewer stars did so because they approached the title of the book assuming it was to create a mission statement for their BUSINESS or CORPORATION. But, I interpret "create a mission statement for work and life" as creating your INDIVIDUAL mission statement for your INDIVIDUAL work...not necessarily your company as a whole. I'm imagining that'd be a whole 'nother book perhaps with a more global-systems take in regards to companies. I do believe Laurie Beth Jones has several workshops a year and private consulting to help with that, though, if you check out her personal website. Anyhow, for individuals, this seems to have a lot of value to me. But, the exercises in this book do not lend themselves, nor do they seem to be created for "companies". Just a clarification. Great book so far.

                              5 out of 5 stars Life Changing!.......2006-10-06

Myself and three other friends read this book together in college and I can confidently say that it changes the entire direction of my life. Jones takes you through the necessary steps to write your mission statement. It was clear and easy. Once you know your mission statement decisions are so much easier to make, regarding the direction of your life. Does this task align with my overall mission or not? In the age of busyness and trying to constantly align our priorities, this is a very important starting point to this never-ending challenge.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good for Personal Mission Statements!.......2006-04-23

For some time I struggled with the idea of developing a mission statement for my church and for my own personal life. With Jones' help, I now have a much better grasp of how to approach the subject privately and publicly. The author is easy-to-read and follow, yet offers profound insights into just what a personal mission statement is.

Laurie Beth Jones is becoming one of my favorite authors, and this title is another example of her fine work.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all.......2005-09-25

Laurie Beth Jones should be a required read for anyone that is dealing with leadership. Her insights are well worth your time and is written in a manner that all could enjoy.

                              5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-09-24

If you are trying to put together things in your life and career, this book ties both of these together. There is a little bit of spiritual emphasis, a little bit of career emphasis, and some over-all life emphasis. A great balance. This book helped me to see why I was un-happy in my job over the past 3 years and why I am so happy in my new job. It gave me courage to start a new venture because I could tie things to my "life mission" 5 stars for this book!

Oscar Wilde was not only extremely sexually promiscuous but also a campaigner for sexual freedom, argues McKenna. His last days in Paris were not miserable either; as Paris gave him freedom from the narrowness of London.

                                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know...........2007-09-03

McKenna has carved his own niche among the Wilde biographies by concentrating on Oscar's homosexuality (too often marginalized or avoided by other writers), with emphasis on his long relationship with Bosie; McKenna considers theirs a great love affair, but it appears to have been something along the lines of codependency. It's quite remarkable how much detail is known about Oscar's antics through letters, journals and books, maybe too much, since this long read is at times a bit tedious as we move through one young man after another. McKenna has a couple of annoying habits as a writer -- all the young men couldn't have been quite as "breathtakingly" attractive as described, he makes a lot of suppositions about what someone must have thought, or might have done, and he's a bit melodramatic with the "but he would find out all too soon" chapter endings.

But these are quibbles. The book is important is several ways. Above all, it portrays Wilde as one of a group of early advocates of gay rights, a fervent believer that society and the law should treat homosexuals with equality and respect. It also provides a fascinating "decoding" of Wilde's most famous works by explaining the double, ie. homosexual, meaning of words, phrases and behavior on the part of his characters, who were often based on real people. The book paints a vivid picture of the seamy side of London's "Uranian" underground of rent boys, petty thieves and blackmailers and the "respectable" men who took their pleasure there. And it delves into his marriage, the ill-fated consequence of having to protect his reputation from the circling vultures.

Wilde is a fascinating, maddening subject, so sure of his own superiority that he considered himself above the law and the strictures of society, making him ultimately the instrument of his own self-destruction. This book will be of interest primarily to Wilde junkies and people interested in the sexual aspect of his life, but it should be read in conjunction with other bios, lest one get the impression that the great man did little but go at it like a rabbit.

5 out of 5 stars A controversial walk on the Wilde side........2007-06-12

"I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china," Oscar Wilde confessed while he was a student at Oxford (p. 14).

For anyone who has visited his lipstick-kissed tomb at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, Wilde's "secret life" is really no secret. Wilde (1854-1900) was primarily an Irish playwright, novelist, and poet, known for his brazen wit ("Little boys should be obscene and not heard," p. 257), which made him one of the greatest celebrities of late Victorian London. Following Wilde's death, his friend, Frank Harris, wrote a biography, Oscar Wilde: His Life and Confessions, which was followed by H. Montgomery Hyde's 1975 biography, Oscar Wilde: A Biography, and more recently Richard Ellmann's 1987 meticulous work, Oscar Wilde. Whereas these earlier, excellent biographies focused primarily on Wilde's literary achievements and dealt with his sexuality only in passing, Neil McKenna's The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde examines Wilde's sexuality and sexual behavior in detail--and at times, in graphic detail.

Most biographers concur that Wilde was introduced to homosexuality in 1885, but McKenna speculates--in charting Wilde's "journey" to find his true sexual self (p. xi)--Wilde was first aware of his homosexuality much earlier when he kissed another boy at age 16. After his arrival at Oxford in 1874, Wilde experienced passionate, romantic feelings for Greek beauty (i.e., cultivated, youthful, "fair," "slim" choirboys) (pp. 6-7), but was drawn sexually towards rougher boys. Following his visit to America in 1882, Wilde boasted, "I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips." In his struggle against his sexual feelings for young men, Wilde attempted to "cure" his sexuality in 1884 by marrying Constance Lloyd (the daughter of Queen's Counsel Horace Lloyd) and by fathering two sons, Cyril (1885) and Vyvyan (1886). But he continued to have regular sexual relationships with Robert Baldwin Ross, Lord Alfred Douglas ("Bosie"), and random teenage boys, whom he would meet in bars or brothels, culminating in his May, 1895 conviction and two-year imprisonment for "gross indecency." Later, after remarking, "my wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go" (p. 463), Wilde died in Paris, knowing that "he was a martyr in an epic struggle for the freedom of men to love men" (p. 465).

Drawn from interviews, letters, memoirs, journals, and Wilde's own writings--although McKenna's controversial but highly readable biography has been criticised for being too speculative, it nevertheless succeeds in bringing Wilde to life as a literary genius, a dandy, a pagan, an "extreme aesthete" who attempted to live his life by burning hard like a gemlike flame (p. 13), and as a gay Victorian outcast.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A magical read.......2007-01-25

I bought this book after reading a rave reviews in The Washington Post.
It is everything that it promised to be: brave, fresh, exciting, and
scrupulously researched. I have read most other biographies of Oscar
over the years and really thought that there was little left to say.
McKenna's biography has proved me wrong by proving not a wealth of new
and exciting material, but also a wealth of new insights and
interpretations. I cannot recommend this book too highly - it is a
beautiful and magical read. At the best part of 600 pages, it's a long
book, but for me it wasn't long enough. Incidentally, I don't
understand the comments of the latest reviewer about footnotes. In my
US hardback edition there are nearly 60 pages of notes which
                                    scrupulously source every quote.

                                    2 out of 5 stars Dubious book.......2007-01-13

I have little doubt that Oscar Wilde and Bosie had extraordinary sexual adventures, but one little thing keeps coming back to me: early in this book, the author identifies Ganymede as the Trojan boy whom Zeus abducted and "anally raped."

What was that? Was there a source for that? I flipped to the back of the book, and of course there was no source. It was apparently "just something the author heard on good authority."

I have been involved in gay scholarship for decades and have read dozens of books about Ancient Greece, and this book is absolutely the first place that I have read about Zeus' alleged anal rape of Ganymede.

I will say one thing with absolute certainty: there is no Ancient Greek source which supports the author. Centuries later, getting into Medieval and Renaissance Europe, there may well have been all sorts of tales about Ganymede. He had passed into the popular language: men referred to a handsome boy as some other man's "Ganymede," and from this we ultimately get the word "catamite."

But the actions of the Great God Zeus? He changed himself into an eagle and abducted Ganymede to Mount Olympus to serve as his wine-pourer. Period.

Now, this one little thing may seem to be just that: one little thing. But this book about Oscar Wilde is full of details. And if the author is not trustworthy on the details, then one must wonder about the value of this book.

                                              Book Description

A moving and evocative recreation of 1914the beginning of the First World War and the year when the world changed for ever.In 1914 the summer peace was shattered by an assassination in the Balkans and, within weeks, a continent was engulfed in war. Eager volunteers rushed to enlist. All the nations involved felt the righteousness of their cause, and everybody believed the fighting would be over in weeks. The reality was very different. War that seemed glorious in August had become hellish by September. Using new letters and diaries from the archives of the Imperial War Museum, Malcolm Brown skilfully recreates this pivotal year through the moving experiences of men and women who felt the war first-hand, vividly capturing the brutal reality of war as well as moments of great humanity.

                                                Book Description

What are the imperial dimensions of U.S. policy in the Middle East, past and present? This hard-hitting commentary, well-grounded in fact and law, addresses these questions:

                                                * Did the U.S. break international law in the Middle East before September 11th?

                                                * ...after September 11th?

                                                * How are U.S. actions affecting the UN?

*What are the implications for world peace for the American military, American civil liberties and American and international economic well-being?

*Should George W. Bush be impeached for lying in leading the nation to war?

The author further discusses U.S. assistance to Iraq during the Iran/Iraq war and U.S. conduct of the 1990 Gulf War, and the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in relation to violations of the laws of neutrality, humanitarian law, the laws of war and the U.S. Constitution. The concluding chapter includes draft articles for the impeachment of President George W. Bush

                                                  Book Description

Ever since the United Nations Earth Summit, more than a decade ago, people have become increasingly aware of the principles of sustainability, and this is helping to change the way that they think and act. However, many environmental conditions are getting worse. It is clear that we need to take collective action, and that everybody must be involved.
Yet many environmental problems are complex. For example, climate change is connected to issues such as biodiversity, land degradation, and agricultural production. It therefore requires the coordination of many different stakeholders, and the application of diverse knowledge and skills.
The constant evolution of global environmental problems also requires society to be willing to experiment with new and innovative approaches. Many local communities are aware of these issues, but they are struggling to determine how they can successfully implement sustainability at a local level, and in practical terms.
The Global Environment Information Centre at United Nations University recognized the importance for communities to adopt innovative methods. We found that this would improve environmental conditions and empower these communities.
In order to understand how innovation can be applied to environmental management at the community level, and promoted in easy-to-use forms, we drew together a team of experts, academics, and community leaders to examine community innovation and its role in promoting sustainability.
The result of our work is the book "Innovative Communities". It provides a concise overview of how innovation and change have a critical role in promoting sustainability. The book has examples from countries in the Asia Pacific region where communities are using innovative methods to address complex and unpredictable environmental problems. This often means introducing new cultures, institutions and governance structures, as well as dramatic changes in people's perceptions, attitudes, roles and behaviors.
The book illustrates various challenges faced by communities in bringing about innovation. It does this by analyzing examples of innovation and community-based environmental initiatives, such as the management of natural resources, forests, solid waste and water, as well as ecotourism. The book demonstrates that, for communities to successfully adopt new approaches in promoting sustainability, it is important to foster people's innovativeness and creativity. The book also identifies factors that help communities implement these initiatives successfully, such as using local culture and knowledge, indigenous systems, strong leadership, and effective mechanisms to ensure strong partnerships and participation.
We hope that this book will help other communities to improve environmental sustainability, and that this will not only improve their circumstances but also contribute to environmental affairs regionally and globally.
