The cities of Albany, Americus, Arlington, Bainbridge, Blakely, and Dawson each had teams in the South Georgia league. One Memorable Summer.......2004-02-21

"Shoeless Summer" is an excellent account of Shoeless Joe Jackson's days in Americus, GA, where he played semi-pro baseball in 1923. It gives you a day-to-day, inning-by-inning description of the events that brought about the creation of the South Georgia League, the "scandal" surrounding the signing of Shoeless Joe by Americus, and the eventual victory of Americus in the Little World's Series.

This book includes player statistics, game-day statistics, and a brief account of each individuals' accomplishments before and after the summer of 1923. It also includes a map of the South Georgia League, photos of players, the only known photo of Shoeless Joe Jackson with the Americus club and game-day posters offering a two dollar game for the bargain of fifty cents.

For the average reader, this book provides a nostalgic look at a brief period of time in the history of Americus which probably would have gone unnoticed outside of that town had it not been for the signing of an "outlaw" ballplayer. If you aren't a fan of baseball, the inning-by-inning descriptions of games may seem boring or possibly confusing. For baseball fans, this book is so much more. If you love the game, Bell's descriptions of "four-six-three" double plays and guys with nicknames like "Lefty" and "Big Bill" will pull you in right away. You can picture the games at Play Ground park in your head as you read about them. There's also a taste of the modern game foreshadowed here when Bell talks about the way rumors were abound in the league that the Americus players were receiving high salaries. Some(like Shoeless Joe) were getting paid upwards seventy-five dollars a week! For some reason, the NY Yankees come to mind.

Also included in this book is information about the campaign to get Shoeless Joe Jackson reinstated to Major League Baseball so that he can be recognized at Cooperstown. In my opinion, he deserves to be there.

Overall, a good read for Shoeless Joe fans and baseball fans in general. If you're not into baseball, this book may be a little overwhelming with its terms and statistics. If you're a nostalgia buff, this book is worth the price for the pictures and posters alone.

Good content, might be the wrong price.......2000-03-31

This gift pack contains many good things, the Visual Dictionary and Cross-Section books are great. If you are not a Comic-Book fan already, the issues that come here are nice, but if you already are a SW Comic-Book reader, you surely already own them. The Power of the Myth book is a stripped down version of the Magic of Myth book that came out with the Smithsonian exhibit. All in all, if you only want the DK books, buy them individually, if you want those AND any other title included, this set is for you.

This anthology is based on a nice idea. Instead of representing each of the Browning's separately it presents them together. Their life story and poetry are bound up with each other. And this volume shows to a degree their development together.

Reading through this volume I find it difficult to become deeply engaged. Something in the archaic, quaint language of much of the poetry deters.
Yet there is a poem, the poem of all the anthologies that is a great and memorable one, one that justifies a life- work.
" How do I love thee , Let me count the ways" is one of the most beautiful and inspiring love- poems ever written.

Browning is one of the great poets. this selection contains poems such as 'the last dutchess', 'porphyria's lover' and 'childe roland to the dark tower came' which shows browning at his best. this selected poems only whetted my appetite for a complete version.

Nicely done.......2000-12-18

As with other titles in this fine series, the poems are presented in roughly chronological order, and are interspersed with a running narrative of the poet's life. Vivid readings are delivered by actors and actresses.

Browning is an excellent lyric poet (e.g. Meeting at Night/Parting at Daylight) but he was best known for his dramatic monologues. The recording emphasizes the monologues, which is good because I doubt I would have ever read them otherwise. The downside is that some of the monologues, especially those Browning wrote later in his career, seem to drag on, with the general idea of a "befuddled narrator attempting to sweet-talk a highly skeptical lover/policeman/critic" (hence 4 stars instead of 5). I expect I'll be listening mostly to the first of the two tapes. Incidentally "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" children's verse is included and is well done.

Most of the earlier poems appear in the Dover thrift edition of Browning's work (for a buck!). I find it easier to concentrate when I can read the poems while listening.

Underappreciated Approach to Poetry.......2000-05-09

One of the best ways of internalizing a poem is to *hear* it, and this is especially true of classics. This audio presentation of selected poems by Browning is a great way for those familiar with his work to rediscover the poems' daring and mischievousness. The audio format is particularly apt for Browning in that it brings to life his use of dramatic monlogue. In that way, it can also serve as a good study aid for students who are new to Browning.

Help Along the Way of Liberty.......2004-04-18

Mike Tolhurst's father fought in the battle for Normandy. Perhaps that is why the narrative portion of this book reads with such emotion, not just military matter-of-factness. This book would succeed, I believe, simply as an account of this part of the war, even without the "travel guide" aspects. Eyewitness accounts and quotes from German as well as Allied soldiers bring what was happening to life.

I had already decided to go to Normandy when I purchased this book. But it was invaluable in helping me decide which places to see, since I knew my time would be limited. Each chapter consists of a narrative of part of the battle, then an accompanying suggested tour which touches on cities and places mentioned in that chapter. I ended up not following the plans exactly, but still basing my choices of places to go on the authors' narratives.

I found Normandy to be beautiful and welcoming, and would recommend that every American, Canadian and UK native visit these sites if you can, most especially if a relative fought in the war. If you do you'll need some guidance as to what to see and where it is, and this book will help a great deal.

Take this One With You.......2000-10-05

This is a great guide to take with you on a trip to Normandy. I carried it with me throughout my tours and was able to read aloud about the events that took place-standing on Omaha Beach and reading about the various divisions that struggled where I stood was of great value to myself and my husband.

The eyewitness accounts bring it to life as well.

If you plan on touring the D Day beaches and sites, bring this one with you!

Fascinating read.......2000-06-15

What makes this book stand out for me is the eyewitness reports, which are dotted throughout as you read this account of the D-Day landings. They bring alive the personal experiences of those who fought and help the reader appreciate the scarifices made.

The book is a nice mix of the history of this particular military campaign, and what the traveller to Normandy can hope to see today. This means the book is a good read for either the armchair military buff or the interested tourist.

An excellent book for those interested not only in wolf conservation, but for those interested in the ongoing debate over the role of humans in the natural community. The various authors each bring in uniqe perspectives and ideas about what should and should not be human responsibilites towards shaping the ecosystems we live in. I was impressed with the great variety of opinions and ideas that are in this book regarding wolf conservation. This book definitely made me think about my ethical, social, and political values and will no doubt continue to help shape these values in the future when I re-read the essays in here.
