Wonderful reading!.......2001-09-27
Pistol Pete was my childhood hero and this book tells me an awful lot about him from people who knew him during different parts of his life. It's people talking about Pete in their own words and the stories and memories are rich and interesting. I especially like the Christian angle to the book, telling of Pete's conversion to Christianity and his evangelical work. Most of the stuff I've read on Maravich downplay that stuff, but I think it as important as anything else he ever accomplished. Nice book for sure.

This biik is an oral history of Pete Maravich, the player and the person. It recounts the memories of various people who knew Pete as the Pistol and as just plain Pete. It gives a balanced view of his past and is especially interesting in recounting Pete's later days and his conversion to Christianity. A good read for people who may have read Pete's biography but want to see him through others eyes.

Good if you've never written anything ever before.......2006-05-10
If you have never written anything, in any genre, in any format, then this book would be an excellent tool to help develop your writing skills. However, as a book on screenwriting, this book gives the very basic of basics. That is, to sum up 97 pages of text, you need to have characters, a plot, conflict, a resolution. Oh, yeah, and it all has to make sense.
Each concept is "delved" into in about two to three pages. Most of this, however, is just primer to the Analysis Section in the back of the book, where the writer now explains how all those elements take place in various movies he considers Good.
Not a great book.
Comprehensive and Practical.......2004-09-29
I think this book stands out from others in the heap of books on screenwriting in at least two salient aspects.
First, it does a fairly good job of defining the terms being used. There is great confusion in screenwriting terminology; different authors have differing definitions for commonly used terms -- or none at all. They just throw out terms as if the reader already knows what it means or the meaning is so intuitively obvious it doesn't need definition. Or they define the term vaguely and apply it inconsistently so it seems to mean one thing in one paragraph, and then something else in another. Terms do need clarification and authors need to be consistent.
Second, whereas some authors emphasize a particular element or technique as a sin qua non -- if not the sin qua non for creating a marketable manuscript -- this book discusses all the basics with no particular emphasis or preference for one.
After surveying the basics, the authors apply their analytical schema to 14 notable films from various genres including The GodFather, Rashomon, Annie Hall, sex lies and videotape and Hamlet. Though I don't always agree as to how they apply their schema, it's a practical schema.
An indispensable Tool........2001-12-14
I can't praise enough this book. The First section explain the Basic about Storytelling, the Second section expose The Screenwriting Tools, the Third Section from the page 100 to the end provide an Analyses of 16 Films using the following tools/elements:
Protagonist and Objective, Conflict, Obstacles, Premise and Opening, Main tension, Culmination and Resolution, Theme, Unity, Exposition, Characterization, Development of the History, Dramatic Irony, Preparation and Aftermath, Planting and Payoff, Plausibility, Action and Activity, Dialogue, Visuals, Dramatic Scenes.
My conclusions:
1) The information is clear and concise explaining the essential elements of a script
2) The Analyses Section provides examples in depth
3) The book is cheap
Is a favorite between my 12 books about Writing, you can't go wrong with this bok even if you are a Pro because the analyses of the films provide you a comparative of the central principles of a good movie.
Masterful! Brilliant! Amazing!.......1999-07-22
Forget all of the other books out there...or, buy the other books, but make this one first on your list. Howard and Mabley are both accomplished professional writers and they know their tools of the craft, which they now share with you. This book succeeds immensely simply because it lists the elements of a screenplay and tells how each is best used and why. It has all of the basic elements: Dialogue, Dramatic Irony, etc. But ever heard of "Preparation and Aftermath", "Future and Advertising", "Planting and Payoff", or "Plausibility"? If not, then learn how to include them in YOUR screenplay to make it better, more exciting, and more fulfilling in a dramatic and universal way. Absolutely the best book on screenwriting. Period. Buy it now. I have read it a countless number of times and each time I learn something new or it spurs my imagination to create something new in the world of my screenplay. Please do yourself a favor and get a hold of this book. A masterpiece of screenplay instruction.

When it comes to 20th-century American pop music, "virtually all of the major popular forms--Tin Pan Alley, stage, and film music, jazz, rhythm and blues, country music, and rock--have been affected throughout their development by the idioms of Brazil, Cuba, or Mexico." So writes eminent musicologist John Storm Roberts of the often-overlooked role that Latin American rhythms, musical forms, and musicians have played in shaping American culture. The Latin Tinge shows how musical trends from Spain and Africa evolved into the Cuban son, bomba y plena in Puerto Rico, Argentinean tango, and the samba in Brazil. Roberts highlights pioneering Latin American performers who popularized Afro-Hispanic music in the United States: Cuba's Pérez Prado and Mario Bauzá, for example, swung New York dancers to the beat of the rumba, mambo, and Latin jazz in the '30s and '40s. Excellent read some small points.......2006-06-12
John Roberts has written an excellent book which doubles as a good research tool. I checked this out from the library last week and I plan to buy my own copy today. Roberts discusses almost every form of Latin music such as mambo, merengue, son, etc. He also has a glossary in the back of the book so you can look up what you have read. Latin music relies heavily on African elements of melody & rhythm, Roberts downplays this well known fact a little. The marimba is long known to be an west african instrument. Roberts says the name comes from Africa. This is a well known fact that for some reason he tends to avoid.
Other than that minor thing, "The Latin Tinge" is very much worth having in your collection.

John Storm Roberts book "The Latin Tinge", is a superb book on the history of Latin music. The book is well written and clearly takes the reader through a remarkable journey, showing the evolution and the development of Latin music and its impact on the American music scene. Highly recommended!

This well-researched work is a revelation for anyone interested in the roots of American popular music, be it rock, jazz or pop. A good complement to this book is "The Brazilian Sound," which covers Brazilian music and has additional information on the influence of Brazilian musicians on American music.

The Latin Tinge stands as one of the best books ever (in English) on the American Latin scene. Roberts traces the music through its earliest moments in America, and does a great job describing all the divergent trends and fads within the field of Latin music, and manages to tie them together in a brilliant way that opens up a lot of stuff that we'd never been able to filter through before. If you've ever been looking for a goodbook on Latin music, this is it!

With the dozens of books on the market for GURPS, it gets really tiresome to have to look through all of them to find the skill, advantage, or disadvantage you want. This book makes that worry a thing of the past. I can not imagine making a character without it anymore.
My favorite GURPS supplement.......2000-10-23
This book has all, or at least the vast majority of the things you need for character creation all under one cover. It has all the disadvantages, all the advantages, and a good number of skills.
If you are one of those people who buys GURPS books to read for entertainment, you might not want to bother, but this book is very helpful (almost a must have)if you are actually playing the game.
Best update of an RPG in quite a while.......1998-06-11
It's the nature of RPG publishing to generate more books for the games published. If all you need is 1 book and every potential customer has that book, you're out of business.
The drawback to this is new material tends to duplicate and even contradict older material unless the game maker keeps a tight reign over it.
GURPS generally has had such supervision but even so you have rules in one book that are useful in another but not found there.
In ten years of existence, a good list of new rules, character skills, advantages and disadvantages have cropped up. GURPS line Editor Sean Punch took ahold of this and compiled the newer rules into one book, making it far easier for players and game masters to generate characters.
Reconciling some contradictory material took some effort but not too much and Punch does invite his readers to note similar advantages, such as Universal digestion and Cast Iron stomach.
The first lets you eat anything non-poisonous, the second makes you resistant to an upset stomach and fights off poisons.
Overall a must for any serious GURPS player.
An excellent book for people considering a return to GURPS........1998-03-24
Steve Jackson Games have managed to do for GURPS 3rd edition what the D&D Rules Cyclopedia did for D&D. A literally breath taking book that expands and supplements the GURPS 3rd edition Basic Set beyond it's comparatively humble origins. Almost a decade of GURP character generation material and advice have been lovingly compiled.
I recommend this book.

This book provided a good overview for some one looking to get started in the retail business. I would caution readers that much of the information is directed more towards a retail business that will be located in a mall setting, not necessarily a stand-alone or downtown located specialty or boutique shop. With that in mind, it certainly provided good personal advice and insight.

I've had this book for 15 years and think of it often, EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT IN THE PIZZA BUSINESS!! For some reason, I can really identify with Tom Monaghan.
It is a bit biographical, but that isn't a negative. When I want to know about successful people, I like to know all about them. It isn't just their business savvy that got them where they are, it is a combination of many other personal traits that help add up to business success.
One trait that really stuck with me is to interview many people about your product--including people who HATE IT. You can learn a lot about why some people avoid you and your product. Just this one tidbit of advice had helped me to make thousands of exta dollars over the past 15 years.

If you are in the pizza business or if you are thinking about getting into the pizza business - you must read this book.
Easy to read - but a bit slow in parts - the nature of biography in my opinion .. so overall subject matter for me was excellent and I am in the pizza business.
On a literary scale the book was only a 2 star - but 5 star for me as I used some of the ideas and confirmed some concepts.

I checked this book out of the public library at a time when my business was near failure. It gave me the spirit to keep on and have a sucessful turnaround. Monahan is a hell of a great story and it comes from the heart. An orphan, high school dropout who overcomes everything and becomes a billionaire. Only in America.
Not great literature and hard to find but well worth having. Now that I own my own copy, I will never give it up.
Pizza Tiger is a great motivating tool for anyone wanting to run their own business.
