Self-serving book but better than most first person jock books.......2007-06-11
This book is mostly what you would expect from a jock telling their story in the first person. That said, Ernie does reveal some interesting things about his first marriage, his dealings with Texaco, and Kyle Petty.
Ernie was married about three years to his first wife and had two sons by her - or so he thought. DNA tests several years later proved that he was the father of neither child. The book implies that the person of the two children were the same man. Anyway Ernie was understandibly hurt by this and no one can blame him. Second, when Ernie gave a thank you speech at his first NASCAR awards dinner at the Waldorf in NYC he inadvertingly forgot to mention his major sponsor Texaco. Immediately he went over to the table where the Texaco executives were sitting and apologized, but nonetheless the executives went into a huff. Maybe those executives never spoke to a large ballroom of people on national TV. So much for filling my car up with Texaco. Third, Ernie believes that Kyle Petty would have been a much better driver had he learned how to drive on short tracks. Of course with his pedigree Kyle never had to work his way up the racing circuit. Interesting.
I found it interesting that when Ernie won his first Daytona 500 he went home that night to sleep in his studio apartment. The book is good at telling you how it is to work you way up through the racing car circuit and and the problems drivers have when not blessed with the support of good racing organizations and rich sponsors.
If you a NASCAR fan you'll want to read the book, and unless you're an insider to the sport you will learn from the book.
Good and satisfying book.......2005-03-22
I had bought the book for about $1 at a dollar tree store, and figured that it would be a boring and uninteresting biography or something like that, but boy was i wrong! When i first started reading it i couldnt put the book down, and before i knew it i was six chapters in. So after reading the rest of the book, i came to a conclusion this was the best thing that i have ever gotten for under $1. Awesome book although it did lack some things but thats alright because he is not a writer.
Good story, but............2005-03-02
Irvan's heartwarming story is shared in "No Fear". The balance between family and racing is appropriate; and a nice collection of photos is presented in the book.
However....
Thumbs down, and 2 stars off to whomever "edited" this book. The book is full of typographical errors; "Morgan Shepard" instead of "Morgan Shepherd", "Texaco/Haviland" instead of "Texaco/Havoline", as well as factual errors. "it was a long race...600 miles..."; in fact; the fall race at Charlotte is only 500 miles.
A good story; however; the content needed a better review before going to print.
No Fear.......2004-03-02
The book No Fear was a book of one mans struggle up through the ranks of racing, and how it all could have ended in a heart beat. This book first takes place at Michigan speedway. Ernie Irvan is a racer on top of his game, a professional at what he does. They are out doing practice laps the day before the race at Michigan, trying to get the setup right. Larry, Ernie's crew chief, told Ernie to take only 10 laps and then come in, and Ernie, being Ernie, is going to take 11, whether Larry likes it or not. On the eleventh lap in turn three, Ernie blows a tire and hits the wall nose first at 190 mph. Even with all of the restraints and safety they have, hitting a wall at 190 mph and coming to a dead stop, will screw you up because momentum continues with your intestines. The doctors predicted that Ernie would not make it through the night on life support. After months of rehabilitation and having the "never give up attitude" that he had, he was able to continue racing, even though no one thought he would be the same after the accident. It took a long time to get to where he was, coming from a low class family with barley enough money to race, let alone utilities, but Ernie was determined to do his best and become a racer. Even after his father walking out, and watching his best friend die in a race, he never gave up. His favorite saying was "When times get tough, the tough get going," and he did believe in that saying because no matter what he just kept going!
This booked was a very well put together story of Ernie's life. It showed all of the hardships he had to go through, the ups and the downs. It really made clear how much he had to struggle to make it to where he was, and how he almost lost it all in the blink of an eye. The book had some choppiness to how the races were put together, like how it would only explain some and not even mention others and then bring them up later, was a little difficult to comprehend. However, how he talked about his incident first to get the readers attention and to bring them into his childhood was an excellent way to start the book. It was a very good representation of how NASCAR was coming up through the years, just like Ernie and how he was struggling with his career.
I thought this book was a very interesting and excellent way to show how his life went and the struggles he had to go through. It will keep you interested through the whole book, and it has very encouraging words in it. It will show you all of the things he went through, and you should be able to see what it is like to have to go through it to try to get to your goals. Even when it seems like you can't and the people around you think you won't be able to, to keep on trying, never give up, and have No Fear!
No Fear.......2000-02-29
Ernie explained everything that I had ever wanted to know in this book. I always knew that there was so much more to the Texaco story. It's an inside look at his life. I watched him in his career and always wanted to know more. This is more.

For Wannabee Hippies.......2006-05-04
I think if you're an old hippie (like me) you know everything in this book already..Now if you can justttt remember it!!! LOL I think it is written for young people who want to discover the art of being a hippie, and adopt that lifestyle, more than for old heads or the people who have "been there, done that" For the old heads, I would recommend a book I've had since it first came out in the 60's (i think) Living on the Earth by Alicia Bay Laurel. Or Carla Emery's book The Encyclopedia of Country Lore, these people lived the life and walked the walk, and the information is 'right on'. Namaste.
Young Hippie.......2006-01-29
I am just 19 but everyone I've ever met said I was a "left-behind hippie" so when I seen this book on Amazon I just thought to myself "if I really am a "left-behind hippie" then I should probably have the Hippie Handbook." That only made perfect since to me, so I bought it and I LOVE IT!!! Now I really can be a "left-behind hippie"! Ha! Ha! Thank you!
Find Your Bliss!.......2006-01-18
Chelsea is way cool....grew up in a commune and all. She takes me back to my Berkeley days hanging out on Telegraph! She covers alot with such a great sense of humor and love. Chelsea shows you lots of fun things to do and tells you why they are so important to the hippie lifestyle. Like taking time to smell the roses and getting in touch with your inner being. Also the illustrations are fun. Stick it to the Man....Thanks Chelsea for making this book!
Peace
Yes, I AM a hippie!.......2006-01-12
I don't usually like novelty books but this one was quite entertaining and informative. I keep going back to it. Find out how to tie-dye, macrame, make "oregano brownies", (I think I'd use mint instead of oregano), wear proper attire and don't bathe too often.
I love learning about name origins so my favorite section was on naming babies. I passed with flying colors--giving my daughter a proper hippie name--even before reading this book.
It all adds up--I'm a hippie! Hey, man, I'm going to split, light some incense, listen to some Joplin, and--later I'm going to meditate. Namaste.
Groovy.......2005-06-11
Once you get past the sterotypical idea of the book. It is actually a pretty good book. The craft ideas and simple history it has to offer is worth the price. For a person who lives the counter culture movement, It is a wonderful addition to my library.

Book Description
"The Complete Guide To Raising Pet Birds For Profit, The Greatest Backyard Business Ever" is written as a practical guide for the pet lover who wishes to make an income breeding, raising and selling small pet birds. Author James McDonald made his living for 25 years with exotic birds and animals before retiring in 2000 at the age of 50. He raised tens of thousands of birds himself and built a nationwide distributorship that supplied pet shops with parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds, finches and other small pet birds. Through the years he has helped many people start their own successful backyard business breeding these small pet birds to help supply the pet industry with the millions that are sold annually. Now, for the first time ever he has put his proven methods of success in the form of a book. The book explains how to make an excellent income, either part-time or full-time breeding the most popular species of pet birds. Many breeders using these methods make from $500 to $2000 monthly on a part-time basis while full timers make much more. You will learn how you can live anywhere and ship your birds to the nationwide market. The book is actually 6 books in one. It completely covers both cage and colony breeding methods of parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds and finches, as well as marketing and shipping. Additionally, three chapters completely cover how to become a wholesale distributor of pet birds, which can be a very lucrative business. Although the book was written with the pet lover in mind that wishes to make an income breeding birds, there is a tremendous amount of information in the book that the hobbyist will find useful as well. Many management tips and pointers can be used by the beginner as well as the experienced person to increase yearly production, thus increasing profits. As a well known animal lover, author James McDonald sold approximately one million exotic birds before his retirement and he reminds the readers of the moral obligations and responsibilities of animal ownership and encourages the reader to always accept those responsibilities by providing humane and adequate care for their birds at all times. The book is not written in some far out technical jargon or academic terminology, but in an easy to understand style with plain and simple, down to earth language by someone who has actually "been there and done that." It is a must have book if you enjoy breeding birds and would like to make a profit while doing something that you truly enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
An exceptional book packed to the brim with worthwhile tips........2004-12-31
Aside from the occasional typo or grammatical error, I found this to be the best of its type since Wendell Levi's Making Pigeons Pay. In some ways, in fact, this book is superior in scope to Levi's.
A great deal of the book is oriented to pet bird wholesaling. There also are well-written chapters for each of the top sellers - parakeets, cockatiels, finches and love birds. I found each of the bird breeding-specific chapters to be helpful, although further details should be included in a future edition.
I am hopeful the author, or another capable writer with experience, will soon issue a similar book for the more lucrative Parrots, Macaws, and so forth.
I further also hope somebody with experience will soon offer books for the other pet trade groupings - reptiles; marsupials, rodents, and so forth.
Hmmm...perhaps Breaking Free can do so and can then publish an Encyclopedia of Pets & Exotic Animals? Guess what...it is now in preparation and completion is scheduled on 1 September 2005. Interested parties should email LJ at ljsbreakingfree dot com.
We at LJ's Breaking Free intend to list this book for readers for it truly is one of those gems that people can use to find their freedom from corporate wage-slavery.
We also shall be seeking the publisher/author's permission for e-Book rights. In time, this book should be at the top of our best seller list - Bill Anderson, (LJ), Breaking Free.
Great information, very complete.......2004-11-23
A very well written book that will hold your interest so much that you will find it hard to put down. Very thorough, with step by step instructions on breeding, feeding, housing, and marketing of parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds and finches, either as a hobby or commercially. The most complete book of its kind.
Great Book.......2004-08-18
This book includes a lot of information that would take the average person years to learn. Not only does it cover breeding various species of birds, but it covers different ways of marketing them as well. It even covers shipping birds via the airlines, which opens up larger markets for most people. If you enjoy birds and are considering turning your hobby into a small business, this book is a must have.
Excellent book on raising small birds.......2004-01-20
I was looking for a secondary income when I ran across this book. I found that the pet business is a huge business that I had never really thought about. I have always loved birds and animals and this book had the information that I needed to get started with a small business of my own. After reading the book through twice, I knew this was something that I would enjoy doing. I located a wholesale buyer in my area who agreed to buy my production. The book is well written, very interesting, and easy to understand. After reading the book you can clearly see that the author is an animal lover and is very much interested in the welfare of the birds, since he discourages anyone from entering this business solely for the financial rewards. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to breed the smaller types of pet birds, either for fun or as a small business.
Best book I've read in awhile !.......2004-01-08
After leaving a 20 year career with the government, I was hoping to find something more creative. While looking for information on buying a pet bird for my daughter , I happened across not only a great book about birds but also a new career. Although I will be starting at the hobby level at first , with the straight forward advice and information in this book I really feel I can expand this to any level. This book reflects 25 years of some one elses hard work and experience. Not only did I find the information on raising birds fascinating but there is a wealth of knowledge for anyone looking to start their own business.

Book Description
Translated into English for the first time, this novelized biography of the 3rd-century Roman Emperor Heliogabalus is simultaneously Araud's most accessible and his most extreme book. Written in 1933, at the time when Artaud was preparing to stage his legendary Theatre of Cruelty, Heliogabalus is a powerful concoction of sexual excess, self-deification and terminal violence. Reflecting its author's preoccupations with the occult, magic, Satan, and a range of esoteric religions, this account of Heliogabalus' reign invents incidents in the Emperor's life in order to make the print of the author's own passionate denunciations of modern existence.
Heliogabalus is Artaud's greatest and most revolutionary masterpiece: an incendiary work that reveals both the divine cruelty of the Roman Emperor and that of Artaud himself. -- Stephen Barber
Customer Reviews:
Incredible Book.......2007-04-14
This book is Antonin Artaud's prose-history of the emperor Heliogabalus in which he explores philosophically the world of sperm cults, sun-worship, castration rituals, sodomy and extravagant theatrics in which the child king rose to his bizarre and decadent reign. This book has only recently become available in the English language - a tremendous contribution for anglophone readers. Rest assured that Artaud's arcane poetry has been translated with mastery by Lykiard. An excellent read for anyone interested in themes of anarchy, mysticism, or avant-garde theater.

Imagine a prison built "not because it was needed but because it was wanted--by politicians who thought it would bring them votes, by voters who hoped it would bring them jobs, and by a corrections establishment that no longer believed in correction." In exploring America's prison system--a system that holds more inmates than any other country in the world--Joseph Hallinan discovered that crime was big business. Further, he writes, "Few people complain. Prisons are tremendous public works projects, throwing off money as a wet dog throws off water."
In Going up the River, Hallinan comprehensively chronicles America's prisons, investigating how prison authority has passed from hard-nosed wardens to the federal court system, a change that simultaneously improved the treatment of prisoners while making inmate rehabilitation and safety more difficult to attain. He also addresses the prison boom: facilities quickly built for economic reasons, resulting in poor prison conditions and a system "so lucrative its founders have become rich men." This immense financial gain is ironically juxtaposed with the fact that most people view prisons as a terrible waste of money.
Hallinan also relays the stories of current wardens, guards, inmates, and even townspeople living in the shadow of a prison. He also focuses on the many challenges prisoners face, including gangs, fighting, and rape, as well as the sensitivity of controversial issues such as conjugal visits. The book makes obvious that America's prison system is in disarray, though neither the source nor the solution can be easily isolated. Hallinan does not offer answers or personal opinions; instead, he presents all angles and leaves the reader to consideration. --Jacque Holthusen
Book Description
The American prison system has grown tenfold in thirty years, while crime rates have been relatively flat: 2 million people are behind bars on any given day, more prisoners than in any other country in the world — half a million more than in Communist China, and the largest prison expansion the world has ever known. In
Going Up The River, Joseph Hallinan gets to the heart of America’s biggest growth industry, a self-perpetuating prison-industrial complex that has become entrenched without public awareness, much less voter consent. He answers, in an extraordinary way, the essential question: What, in human terms, is the price we pay? He has looked for answers to that question in every corner of the “prison nation,” a world far off the media grid — the America of struggling towns and cities left behind by the information age and desperate for jobs and money. Hallinan shows why the more prisons we build, the more prisoners we create, placating everyone at the expense of the voiceless prisoners, who together make up one of the largest migrations in our nation’s history.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
One informative and great read........2007-07-28
Joseph Hallinan's book manages to be even handed in examining the prison culture and industry in our nation. Instead of taking a tempting tangent into the sociopolitical realm, Hallinan for the most part stays true to his investigative roots. While some of the material may not be new to those that have studied criminology or sociology, there is enough meat in the book to satisfy those in that arena. Hallian does a difficult task of informing the uninitiated as well as giving those within the aforementioned disciples something to chew on. With respect to building our way (prisons) as a means for a more effective criminal justice system, we may very well be beyond the point of no return. Hallinan's book only underscores the pandering and lack of true political will that has led to our prison nation.
Very Insighful.......2007-03-11
This is a very well written, insightful text on our "prison industrial complex." As a corrections professional, I am quite skeptical of the constant onslaught of prison-bashing books, citing the various incompetencies and underlying corruption inherent in many departments of correction. Hallinen's writing style makes for an easy read, almost like reading a novel. The book is full of personal interest stories and minimizes the use of statistics. I recommend this book to anyone interested in corrections, and certainly to policy-makers at the state level.
Timely and informative.......2006-11-02
Reads like a novel. As the United States becomes more and more of a prison nation, exporting the culture of incarceration around the globe, prison studies should become a bonafide topic of study in colleges and even high schools, and this inside glimpse should be one of the assigned readings.
There's a World Out There We Don't Know About.......2006-06-20
To me this book is sort of a Prisons 101 type book. For those of us who , fortunately, don't know much about the current prison system in the US it is very eye opening. For instance, I had no idea how many private prisons there are and how they have become an industry. We have reached the point that there are many people in the US with a vested economic interest in locking up more of 'em and keeping 'em there. Also, the author visits several prisons in small white rural towns with mostly black and Hispanic prisoners. Here again the prisons are about jobs in the community rather than rehabilitating prisoners ( Great line in the book, someone says rehabilitation doesn't work because you cannot rehabilitate someone who has never been habilitated ).
I was somewhat disappointed that the author, after having documented a lot of real world situations, didn't have any more suggestions for improving the whole mess. The book just sort of ended with the author saying he saw only a couple of approaches that boded well for the future. Left me somewhat depressed with it all.
I learned a LOT from this book..........2005-11-09
Fascinating book about the history, the sociology, conditions, traditions, etc. on US prisons. Very, very interesting. The author is a self-professed 'prison buff.'
I learned an awful lot from this book. I didn't realize how big of an industry prison actually is. Inmates make everything from the stereotypical license plate to clothing for regular people! Industries sometimes fight to have their business put in a prison. Food and toiletry industries, among others, compete for the prisons' business. And I was completely not aware of the fact that there are PRIVATE prisons in the US. Private prisons, not run by the state or the government, prisons that are there to make people money. Convicts are now a business. Amazing what this world has come to.

Thought-provoking reading recommended to environmentalists.......2001-02-02
Human expansion in the form of real estate development is threatening wild life ecology at home and around the world. In Saving Endangered Species With Real Estate Development, Joseph Woytowitz offers an innovative, original, yet very practical and effective solution to real estate development and the preservation of habitat. He gives a detailed description of the applications and benefits of building connecting condominiums and other buildings around a large property much like a giant cage wall enclosing a complete and self-sustaining biodiversity of wildlife ecosystems that would also give the building residents fantastic wildlife views, while making saving endangered species and habitats both possible and profitable. The residential walls facing the habitat could be shatterproof glass able to withstand pressures up to 40,000 pounds, and upper floors could be caged or open terraces giving residents superb views from their homes, restaurants, workplaces, or shopping malls. Humans would not have direct access to the habitat from their homes, instead they could travel along trails surrounded by cages, leading to various social centers throughout the habitat. Saving Endangered Species With Real Estate Development is novel, original, and thought-provoking reading recommended to environmentalists, developers, policy makers, and anyone concerned with today's rapidly diminishing and quality degraded wildlife habitats.
