Urban Life, Home-Schooling, Hip-Hop Leadership, the Cool Rich Kids Movement, a Hitchhiker's Guide to Community Organzing, and Why Philanthropy is the Greatest Art Form of the 21st Century! In the future world of Scorch, America is run by a "corporacracy." Three conglomerates have taken control not by force but by manipulating common beliefs and values through the media, and particularly by playing on Americans? fears of Big Brother. Consumerism and privatization have run amok in this landscape of flashing screens and subtle brainwashing, a world where even city streets and public schools are run by big business. This is a darkly comic first novel of a dystopian future, with echoes of 1984 and Brave New World.

buy a copy before i buy them all!.......2006-09-17
this will be my "holiday/birthday/MLK day/fourth-of-july" present for everyone this year. i first found it because of its references to homeschooling, but the whole thing is an important read. come on, everybody. THINK!
a "should-read".......2006-02-25
i'm not going to say it's a "must read," but anyone with a social conscience (and i realize this probably excludes 90% of America) should have this on his or her reading list. basically a collection of essays on various subjects, the author confronts these subjects (for the most part) in a positive, thought-provoking, unique and meaningful way. and i say "for the most part" and "should read" primarily because i do think he tends to get a bit caught up in himself, so that at times he wears his own ego (and insecurities) on his sleeve (although it is perhaps a well-deserved ego for the work he has done); and while at some times his writing is both humorous and brilliant, at others it can also be a bit shallow and predictable. how's that for fair and balanced?!
Upski comes clean.......2005-10-28
...about his wealth. He was "upper middle-class" in Bomb the Suburbs, but now he admits to being filthy rich as he stands to inherit a large family fortune. I knew he had to be rich cuz your average blue-collar, working class white person does not share his guilty conscience about slavery or black plight. Rich whites really shouldn't attempt to be the spokespeople for the majority of whites any more than they should try to speak for all blacks. It's a totally different mindset. Reading the self-appointed spokesperson for the white race proclaim "my entire race owes black people 96% of all our life energy and money and we'd be lucky still if they forgave us and didn't kill us Colin Ferguson style" was enough to make milk pour out my nose.
Aside from that though this book is excellent and I didn't notice too much white (rich?) guilt as I noticed in the first book. On every page of this book Upski seems to be laying down some detailed strategy on how to fight back against this wicked system. I was very impressed with his second effort and I wish him well and hope people take him, and his causes seriously. He appears to be a born leader who deserves people's backing. Go Upski!
Essential reading.......2005-07-08
Once again, Upski has done something real. He has matured and gained intellectually from his first work (Bomb the Suburbs). In Bomb the Suburbs, he was full of energy and great ideas, but as a first time writer was unpolished and a few times overzealous. In this work, he corrects those problems and addresses real methods for change in our society. From making useful charity donations to upstart organizations to creating community centers to homeschooling kids the right way, Upski again delivers people what very few people have done so far -- tools for making a difference.
If you like this read his first book, Bomb the Suburbs, to gain additional perspective.
Go Self-School Yourself!.......2003-08-11
I'm sure there's a whole flock of teenagers making this book their Bible. Wimsatt has that "edge" people my age love, with chapters talking about self-schooling, challenging others, and making goals for yourself. Some of his writing is actually pretty inspriring stuff. I'm particularly fond of his 19-step self-schooling process, which works as good ground-rules for anybody, out of college or not. However, most of the chapters are sloppily written and seem to lack authority at times (although this could just be the author's style). Overall, a good place to start if you care about inner-city issues.

Customer Reviews:
The best book on fiberglass I've read so far........2002-09-16
Its not easy to write something on this subject. The 2 previous books on fiberglass I've read try to cover every possible aspect of the subject and my eyes glass over after about the 4th chapter. This was well written and seems to tell me just what I need to know. This book is general enough to be readable. The way it is worded is very down to earth and it reads well - the author doesn't try to impress me, just inform. Thanks Tex. Anything more I need to know will be from experimentation and asking other professionals. I usually just start calling paint shops or posting to newsgroups.
Informational but.............2001-09-17
Informational, writen with can-do attitude, however the text has many typos in it and makes it hard to follow. A worthwhile purchase, but definetly not the last word.
blah blah.......2000-07-09
this book doesnt go into enouph specifics. it tells you a few things, then leaves you hanging. doesnt go into depth at all. pictures are crude. this book did not help me at all. gave some basic principles and that was it. definitely not for the first timer. Also, it mostly only covers 32 fords. he talks about real hot rods not being trendy but then only talks about 32 fords. i want my money back!
worth the money.......2000-07-05
Was a good book overall, but i would have liked to see more on subframing in early 50s chevies. The paint sections were good. If you want to build hot rod this is a good place to start.

A classic revised and updated for the twenty-first-century consultant
Revised and updated for consulting in the twenty-first century, this new edition is for anyone who wants to know what consulting is really like as a career, as a living, and as a life. Geoffrey Bellman reveals how to make the job rewarding both financially and personally as he examines the practical issues of managing time, clients, and money as well as such broader concerns as how to balance work with family life. At once practical and personal, this book is for all types of consultants, all those who work with consultants, and all those who dream of being consultants.
Geoffrey M. Bellman (Seattle, WA) has consulted to organizations of all sizes, from the inside and outside, including numerous Fortune 500 companies. He is the author of several well-received books, including Getting Things Done When Youre Not in Charge the bestselling book that has sold more than 80,000 copies.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for those thinking of consulting.......2005-12-01
Geoff's book is a great tool to remind us that humans are the "tool" in consulting. As such, the better we know ourselves, the more our work can align with our values. This book is a great read for those looking to find the meaning behind consulting.
New Treatment of Old Concept.......2005-10-20
Consultant's Calling is not the most well written book, but the concept of "being called" to the consulting profession is new treatment to this age-old profession. Regardless of the craft problems, the book is well worth reading for any practicing consultant or anyone considering consulting as a profession. The book more than adequately covers why you should/should not become a consultant, and once you are there, why you should/ should not continue to be a consultant. This is not a how-to book, it is a why-book. In the broadest sense of the term, it may even be labeled spiritual.
Thinking about becoming an outside consultant?.......2005-08-12
This book is written with lots of "heart" by a guy who has lots of experience as an outside consultant. This book is full of advice - not just for consultants, but good advice for living a fulfilling life. It's easy to read, and the author is quite funny!
Essential reading for service professionals.......2003-01-31
If you "help others with what they need and want," you will treasure this book and re-read it every year for a "tune-up." How do you create integrity in your work, bring honor to the profession, and gain your client's trust and gratitude? The author believes our best service to clients is accomplished through consciousness of self, and he calls on those of us with "radical hearts and pin-striped suits" to lead clients by our example to have the courage to implement our recommendations and thereby fulfill their organization's needs and our own. He says we must make our "values and viewpoints" evident to clients so they know they're buying a human being's integrity and expertise, and he walks his talk on every page. Most valuable to me is his clear insight into the mind and heart of the client, the person across the table who's hiring me. I have 10 years of consulting experience and am now building a practice in a new area, and this book gave me (1) practical advice on getting clients and making money, updated for today's marketplace and client expectations; (2) an inspiring reminder of how valuable I am to my clients and (3) a role model for creating a life for myself with contribution, friendship, and integrity at its center. Read this book if you are a coaching professional, management consultant, dentist, attorney, financial advisor, personal trainer, or any other client-focused service professional.
This book has helped me change.......2002-10-15
from being a contractor to being a consultant. It is
loaded with vital questions that help me understand
what I am doing, what I want to do, and how to do it better.
Book Description
Celebrated scholar Joseph Campbell shares his intimate and inspiring reflections on the art of living in this beautifully packaged book, part of a new series to be based on his unpublished writings.
Customer Reviews:
The Art of Living.......2006-11-05
I've been a Joseph Campbell fan for years, and this book is a perfect one to give as a gift to someone who isn't quite up to reading his more scholorly works. It's a guideline for life gleaned from his in-depth study of cultural myths from which he developed his own wonderful philsophy of life.
Great idea, poor execution........2006-06-08
As a fan of Joseph Campbell's writings I was excited to see a book titled "A Joseph Campbell Companion", especially prefixed by the words "Reflections on the Art of Living". It sounded like something right up my alley. How could you possibly go wrong with a title like that?
The short answer is that this book is not organized in a helpful way. I was expecting something akin to Anne Charter's "Portable Beat Reader" where each section is well organized and documented and each entry is titled and dated so you know where it came from -much like an encyclopedia. Instead what you get is a long series of sound bites and miscellaneous quotes that you have to look up in the reference pages in the rear of the book for clues as to how to put things into any sort of context. Although much of the writing is superb, it is often hard to tell where passage starts or stops.
The result makes me think of the sort of book that's good for the bathroom. You can pick it up and read a random passage and get something out of it, but reading it from front to back is often frustrating.
Wonderful book.......2006-02-06
I came to this book having read only The Power of Myth; a transcript of the great Campbell TV series of that name. It motivated me to go out and buy some twenty plus books of Joseph Campbell. Good? It's not good; it's wonderful.
An elderly reverend gentleman's opinion however was "I prefer a linear narrative." It IS largely a book of Campbell's key aphorisms and stories. It is best appreciated as an aide memoire, when the unfortunate lack of an index is disappointing. "Now where did I read that line / story" provides hours of searching.
The good news? After several years they are all internalised and like Brighton Rock they go all the way through; plus you can probably find them quicker.
A negative comment below by Life Long Reader "LLR" is that this book is purely a mishmash of Diane Osbon's views on life. Wrong! The five page introduction could be unfairly said to be so. The other 306 pages are PURE CAMPBELL so don't be misled.
Miss.......2005-07-24
If you are looking for a book on Joseph Campbell, think again. Instead you will receive a hodge podge of Diane Osbon's thoughts and her own perspective of life- disapointing.
Awesome, plain and simple........2005-06-02
This is a collection of both brief and longer bits of Campbell's writing, reflecting a "rebellious smart person's" lifetime of questioning, searching, and discovering key aspects of humanity and personal growth through clues in literature, philosophy, psychology, religion, mythology, and metaphysics. He is the master of synthesizing interdisciplinary knowledge with special attention to the common ground found in all cultures and across time periods as well. Sometimes I carry a copy with me while going about my daily adventures, and often the quick quote or page I open to creates the magic moment in your day that you long for when reality forgets to give it to you.
Book Description
Surveying the expanding conflict in Europe during one of his famous fireside chats in 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt ominously warned that "we know of other methods, new methods of attack. The Trojan horse. The fifth column that betrays a nation unprepared for treachery. Spies, saboteurs, and traitors are the actors in this new strategy." Having identified a new type of war -- a shadow war -- being perpetrated by Hitler's Germany, FDR decided to fight fire with fire, authorizing the formation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to organize and oversee covert operations. Based on an extensive analysis of OSS records, including the vast trove of records released by the CIA in the 1980s and '90s, as well as a new set of interviews with OSS veterans conducted by the author and a team of American scholars from 1995 to 1997, The Shadow War Against Hitler is the full story of America's far-flung secret intelligence apparatus during World War II.
In addition to its responsibilities generating, processing, and interpreting intelligence information, the OSS orchestrated all manner of dark operations, including extending feelers to anti-Hitler elements, infiltrating spies and sabotage agents behind enemy lines, and implementing propaganda programs. Planned and directed from Washington, the anti-Hitler campaign was largely conducted in Europe, especially through the OSS's foreign outposts in Bern and London. A fascinating cast of characters made the OSS run: William J. Donovan, one of the most decorated individuals in the American military who became the driving force behind the OSS's genesis; Allen Dulles, the future CIA chief who ran the Bern office, which he called "the big window onto the fascist world"; a veritable pantheon of Ivy League academics who were recruited to work for the intelligence services; and, not least, Roosevelt himself. A major contribution of the book is the story of how FDR employed Hitler's former propaganda chief, Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstengl, as a private spy.
More than a record of dramatic incidents and daring personalities, this book adds significantly to our understanding of how the United States fought World War II. It demonstrates that the extent, and limitations, of secret intelligence information shaped not only the conduct of the war but also the face of the world that emerged from the shadows.

Book Description
In this engaging memoir, Brazilian cabinet member Benedita da Silva shares the inspiring story of her life as an advocate for the rights of women, people of color, and the poor, and argues persuasively for economic and social human rights in Brazil and everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
A Triumphant Journey.......2005-05-06
The autobiography of Benedita de Silva is a must read narrative of this woman's heroic and incredibly human life. She balances tales of her victory in politics with her victory in love; it is easy to relate to and to admire her humanity and enduring spirit. The story traces her trajectory from the favelas (hillside slums in Rio de Janeiro) to the Senate, where she voices the needs of and injustices suffered by her community. Additionally, the book serves to illuminate many contemporary aspects of Brazilian culture: the rise of the PT (Brazil's grass-roots organized Workers' Party), Brazilian spiritual life, the myth of racial democracy in Brazil, class, gender, race, modernization, and history. This is a must read because Benedita's courage is worth emmulating, and her triumph deserves to be understood. Her victory deserves to be known, counted, and admired. You "owe" it to her to read this book. It will help you make more of your own day, week, month, and year when you have the benefit to have the tenacity of her spirit to challenge you and accompany you in the pursuit of your own dreams.
RECOMMENDED for general readers interested in Brazil........1998-10-08
It is a tempting to describe Benedita da Silva using labels: you may know that she was the first black woman in the Brazilian Senate or that, in spite of her national prominence, she still lives in the poor neighbourhood where she grew up. An autobiography offers the chance to learn more about her life than these obvious labels allow.
This short and highly readable book does indeed fill in some of the blanks for readers outside Brazil, who will find out more about, say, what it actually means to live in a favela (or slum). It is impossible, naturally, for Benedita to describe her life without considering how those slums came to be, and what should now be done to help the people who live there. Likewise, we may have heard that Brazil is a colourblind society, whereas Benedita's experiences, as a black person, lead her to see things differently. In this and other aspects of her life-as a woman, say, or as a rare combination of evangelical Christian and leftist politician-Benedita's memoirs naturally take us away from her particular circumstances and into areas of policy.
In some ways, then, the book is satisfying but necessarily limited. As an autobiography it usefully covers the main events in her life but does not try to go into much detail. She relates many brief episodes that make revealing, even startling, points about, say, racism or life in the favela-rather than a sustained account of (to take another example) just how she first came to be involved in the local community association.
On the other hand, her thumbnail sketches of current issues in Brazilian life and society-issues such as land reform, health and education, or the role of the churches-may indeed be helpful to those who know little about Brazil. Of course, given the nature of the book as a memoir, they don't enable us to get very far in analysing the relevant causes and prospects.
If my last two paragraphs appear negative, they are only intended to point out that the book is too short for us to find out what "really" makes Benedita tick, much less to cover the complexity of modern Brazil. Nevertheless, the book is helpful and the translator has certainly come up with an easy style that makes it a pleasure to read. Even though I was already quite familiar with Brazil (having lived there, and speaking Portuguese), I still found this book intriguing and enjoyable.
