One of the few autobiographies to have survived from the Middle Ages, this life history of one of the most influential rulers of the fourteenth century, Charles IV of Bohemia, covers his life from birth until his election as King of Germany in 1346.

Charles IV describes his childhood, spent mainly in the court of French kings, his juvenile years, his marriage and his first steps into the international political scene during the early part of the fourteenth century.

A unique addition to this volume is the first ever English translation of the Legend of Saint Wenceslas, written by Charles IV of Luxemburg.

This is the first autobiography to contain both the Latin narrative sources and a complete English-language translation.

Something for the scholar and layman.......2007-03-23

Anyone interested in the history of Bohemia and Charles IV will find this first English translation a worthwhile read. The scholar will find an accompanying original Latin version of his biography, an analysis of the work as well as a collection of source materials, while the history enthusiast will get a rare glimpse into a primary source and into the mind of a most interesting monarch. A good part of the book finds Charles preaching advice to future rulers, but in other parts of the book we find him telling us what he was thinking and doing at specific points in his life. Whether it is tactics on the ground or creating the base for his rise to power, Charles' own words speak to us directly unfiltered by the opinions of other historians. This alone makes it worth the price of admission to English readers.

A Winner!.......2002-06-12

Overall, I liked this book. The story of JR's early racing days and his travels with Jim McElreath as they followed the IMCA circuit was good reading. In addition, the details of his 1966 Eldora crash and recovery as well as his experience driving the Smokey Yunick NASCAR Chevy in 1963 was very interesting. I would have liked more technical detail on what happened to his race cars to cause poor finishes at Indy in 1973, 1982, etc.

If you are a fan of Johnny Rutherford and racing in general, this is the book for you. The book gives insight from inside the racing world. It is a highly detailed account of Johnny's personal life and his racing career. I found his personal struggle to become a big time driver very interesting, as he started at a relatively late age for his era. It was also interesting for me to read his explanation of the many changes in racing and what was expected of a driver from his first race until his retirement. The candid comments and numerous photographs, make the reader fell like he has had a personal converstaion with J.R. himself. I believe almost anyone will enjoy this book.

I have recommended this book to all those women in my life who have sold out to the patriarchal values in American culture because I want them to find communion with a more enlightened man and not settle for anything less.

And for a reader who is not hip to feminist thought or lit, this is a good soft entry. I enjoyed bell hooks analogies and statements regarding that women do seek love in so many ways and her most important point was that many women do not receive non-sexual love from men, which is necessary for balance in life, thus forcing them to seek it in so many other ways.

This book encouraged me to read and understand other bell hooks books that are phenomenal. I respect hooks for offering a wide spectrum on emotions, and reality

Tries to go the distance.......2004-03-04

This book, I attempted to approach with feelings of wanting answers and wanting to feel safe and secure in our often harsh, demanding, and very male world. Unfortunately, I was unable to achieve those feelings of inner peace and turmoil dominated. I was hoping for an Oprah meets Holly Near meets Dame Edma book that was refreshing, and would allow me to blossom inside. Many of the passages make some sense, but the boardroom chapter may alienate some sisters due to the fact that most of us are struggling at jobs which are mundane and tedious. It is so easy for men though, all they have to do is look around and they get what they want. I am still looking for love and am tired of nights in the bubble bath, reading silly romance stories which reflect our harsh patriarchial society. I am searching for a book with the answers the way some people claim to search for soulmates. I am tired of the tv shows with loving couples and my cat which I am alergic to that scares all the men I know away. I want a book that I can relate to...one that works on my own terms...one that speaks to me and the women like me. Tell me if you find it

Definitely 3rd in the Love Trilogy.......2003-03-04

bell hooks blew me away with All About Love and Salvation. Communion, however, left me wanting more. Although it was written in the typical bell hooks fashion -- I love her writing style, Communion didn't have the same passion, spirit and overall power that the previous two books had. I did like the way she weaved her own self into the topic. By doing so, she makes the reader feel closer to her and helps them relate better to their own search for love.

Love from a feminist perspective.......2003-02-20

Communion is a discussion and legitimization of the pursuit of love from a mid-life feminist perspective. Hooks believes that the desire to understand how love works is a serious, important, and ultimately joyful life-work activity that should be studied and taught. The big question she attempts to answer is how to "find, keep, and make love despite the power of patriarchy."

The best part of this book is that Hooks always tells the truth as she sees it. There is no glossing over or contriving to make a point. Sometimes her language is sexually explicit and blunt. She explains love from the perspective of her own personal life experience and through intelligent observation and study of our culture and gender practices. The impact of the feminist movement is woven through her assessment. Unlike many other feminists, however, Hook's voice is not militant.

There is only one caution. The ever-present temptation for Hooks and for all of us is to find excuses why we cannot find love or be loving. From the ego's perspective, there is always a so-called justifiable reason for the rejection of another. In this case, the justifiable reason is patriarchy. However, unconditional love means that we undo the hate inour minds and extend love no matter what distressing disguise is presented to us.

This book is just great! I would have sent an e-mail to the author had one been in the book. I'm buying several for Christmas gifts - my friends are also crazy about Split-Decsions. We had been hoping a book like this would come out and when I found this, I was overjoyed.

Glad to have this opportunity to let the author know how much we all like Split-Decisions. It's just great for those of us 'word game lovers'. I don't want to forget the other word games in this book, they're also good (haven't finished them yet - still working on them) but I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Political scientists have long classified systems of government as parliamentary or presidential, two-party or multiparty, and so on. But such distinctions often fail to provide useful insights. For example, how are we to compare the United States, a presidential bicameral regime with two weak parties, to Denmark, a parliamentary unicameral regime with many strong parties? Veto Players advances an important, new understanding of how governments are structured. The real distinctions between political systems, contends George Tsebelis, are to be found in the extent to which they afford political actors veto power over policy choices. Drawing richly on game theory, he develops a scheme by which governments can thus be classified. He shows why an increase in the number of "veto players," or an increase in their ideological distance from each other, increases policy stability, impeding significant departures from the status quo.

Policy stability affects a series of other key characteristics of polities, argues the author. For example, it leads to high judicial and bureaucratic independence, as well as high government instability (in parliamentary systems). The propositions derived from the theoretical framework Tsebelis develops in the first part of the book are tested in the second part with various data sets from advanced industrialized countries, as well as analysis of legislation in the European Union. Representing the first consistent and consequential theory of comparative politics, Veto Players will be welcomed by students and scholars as a defining text of the discipline.
