      Book Description

In this biography of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales it is the authors' aim to not add more gilt to the already glistening halo of romance which an entranced world has placed around the head of the heir to the British throne, nor to present His Royal Highness as a prince charming, but as a very human young man, not more perfect than his fellows or possessed of more than the average number of virtues to be found in any other clean living, sport loving young Englishman.

It is evident that writing and publishing this book was a labor of love for its author, and for that he is to be commended. Although the book is primarily a narration of the highs and lows of the early and middle years of the Philadelphia Athletics, it does provide some basic biographical information on Connie Mack himself. As a devoted fan of the various incarnations of the Athletics, I appreciated this opportunity to learn more about their early years and become better acquainted with their legendary and revered manager/owner.

However, be advised that this book is riddled with grammatical mistakes. I found that I was so distracted by having to decipher the text through all the mistakes that my appreciation of the book was greatly diminished. If you depend upon quality writing, as I do, then reading this book will not be an enjoyable experience.

THIS IS A GOOD ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE OF CONNICE MACK AND THE HISTORY OF THE PHILADELPHIA A'S. THE BOOK SPENDS MORE TIME ON A SEASON BY SEASON HISTORY OF THE A'S THAN ON THE LIFE OF CONNIE MACK BUT IT IS VERY INTERESTING AND VERY FACT FILLED. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT FOR HISTORIANS AND BASEBALL FANS. CONNIE WAS TRULY ONE OF A KIND OWNER. HIS YEARS IN BASEBALL ARE UNSURPASSED AND HIS LEGEND WILL LIVE FOREVER. A GOOD READ.

                      Book Description

Frightening the Horses is the first accessible and inclusive account of gay and gay-themed cinema published in one accessible volume. Avoiding an overly dry and theoretical approach, Braun celebrates the achievements of cinema's gay icons from the years before gay men and lesbians could be openly depicted on the screen - and carries the story right through the introduction of the Production Code in 1930, through the 'undercover' gay icons of the forties and fifties, to the sexual revolution of the sixties and seventies - and beyond. Chapters include: Forbidden Topics, Circumventing the Censor, Gay Icons, Public versus Private Lives and Out of the Closet. Frightening the Horses embraces all movies and themes from movies dealing with overtly gay themes (mainly from the sixties and after), as well as the subtexts, in-jokes and coded messages which run through Hollywood and other film cultures. Extended treatment is given to all the major gay icons - from Judy Garland and Joan Crawford via James Dean and Marlon Brando, right through to River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves and Madonna.

                      3 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, a mixed bag.......2003-04-09

Frightening The Horses is described as a "personal journey through a century of gay-themed cinema." While there are some personal references, it would be much more accurate to describe the book as a compendium of gay actors, gay icons, and key movies they made.

For what it really is, the material is presented in a straight-forward easy to digest manner. The layout of the material is quite good and there are many b/w pictures. I would have found it much more interesting if the author decided to be less of an editor and became more vested in his book. For example, he mentions several actors that worked for Alfred Hitchcock but does not address what the director thought of homosexuals nor any observations or conclusions on why Hitch did so many gay-specific sub-plots in his movies. Also, where is the info on famous gay directors such as George Cukor or Vincente Minnelli?

The potential reader might also want to consider that the 2002 edition (current edition) of the book is being distributed without an index. An addendum says that the index is available on-line. It is not. When the publisher was contacted he provided a hotmail address for the writer's assistant. There was no response to my e-mail.

Given all of this, my overall impression of the book is luke-warm.

5 out of 5 stars More info than you thought possible.......2003-03-11

I had heard rumors about certain actors and actresses all my life - who hasn't - that So & So was gay/lesbian/whatever. This book discusses some of these aspects of Hollywood life as well as the various films regarding homosexuality.

There's some films I never thought had anything to do with homosexuality - for instance, the Rita Hayworth film "Gilda". I never realized the male leads played the part as if they were gay lovers. It makes total sense once it's pointed out, but I have to admit I didn't see that aspect before.

Much information is provided regarding various actors' sexual preferences, even detailing Judy Garland's unfortunate picks of husbands (one was having an affair with Liza's husband - that's something for Jerry Springer!).

Most of the information is not sensationalized, however, and makes for a very good read. Much of Hollywood's past, a homosexual was forced to marry to cover up his/her sexuality. Careers would (and did) crumble if a whiff of homosexuality surrounded a star. The people who had to deal with living this lie are names and discussed, but not in a "National Enquirer" way. Their personal lives as well as their professional lives are skillfully interwoven to give you a complete picture of the person. Mr Braun treats his subjects with the respect they deserve.

If you want to see how much gays and lesbians influenced the movies, this book is a great place to start. I never realized there were so many actors and actresses that were in the closet and I never realized so many films had a gay subtext. I will be looking at the movies a little differently now, thanks to Mr Braun.

The symbols make it very easy to understand. The information is great and I really love the photography. This book is perfect for any coffee table. All around this book looks great and is very easy to read.

I loved the first Big Book of Buds so I was surprised that there could be even more marijuana varieties to learn about and sample. The book includes some new breeders as well as many of the seed companies that have been refining marijuana for decades. With its bright colors and close-up bud photography this book is truly eye candy.

In this book is to be found a remarkably concise explanation of the ancient uses, ritual and true aims of Magic. the author sweeps away the confusion caused by the many misconceptions, and surveys the history of Magic from the 'old religion' of pre-Christian times through to the discoveries of modern psychology. and it is, he says, with the modern school of psychology, particularly Jungian, that the magician finds his closest link with modern thought. Since the author is writing for Western man he is not concerned with Eastern magical systems, but here explains the 'Western Tradition' of Magic. This tradition embodies the teaching and practices that have been handed down from antiquity, the central philosophy on which it hinges being the corpus of Hebrew mystical wisdom known as the Qabalah. Magic, far from being an irrational superstition, is based upon profound psychological laws, and possesses its own special technique. Although repressed throughout the ages in the Western world, it has never ceased to exist and has from time to time emerged in different forms - one of the most notable in Britain being the 'Order of the Golden Dawn', which is still in existence, and perpetuates Western magical traditions. This book constitutes a most useful preliminary guide to any study 'in depth' of this admittedly vast subject.

Maybe this is one of the lesser known books on the Western Mystery Tradition; I was lucky find a reprint in a discount bookstore over a decade ago. Published some time ago, before the New Age 'explosion', its presentation isn't showy, and it doesn't pretend to provide all the 'secrets'. What it does do, however, is provide a serious introduction Western Magical thought outlining the psychological and philosophical foundations of the movement - as Butler notes in the endnote, sometimes with a tantalising lack of specific detail - but you can be sure that what you read here is written for the right reasons. Read in conjunction with The Magician: His Training and Work, by the same author.

                                  Book Description

This engaging book considers early twentieth-century British social reform activities through the lens of the garden city movement and its plans to build healthy, aesthetically pleasing communities away from overcrowded and polluted cities. The author argues that the movement`s initial radical reforming schemes became instead a way to maintain the established order in the face of threatening social change.

I have had a number of people I've cared for over the last few years refer to this book as helpful. I finally decided to buy one and saw for myself why this is true. The book gently covers topics unique to the female experience of cancer care. Often friends and family members will ask how to connect and support the cancer patient. Thankfully, this book offers excellent ideas for conversation starters and perspective by using humor, inspiration and sincerity. In writing this book the author has provided a valuable gift for other female cancer patients walking her shoes.

One of the best books I have ever read. I'm a 34 year old female who just finished treatment for lymphoma. Ms. Hyde captured my feelings and thoughts perfectly. I highly recommend this to anyone going through a battle with cancer or to any caregivers also. I wish I had found this book when I was actually having my chemo and radiation. Some of her pointers would have helped me a lot (ie. always carry a blanket with you to chemo and to hospitals).

The 9/11 terror attacks continue to send shock waves through the American political system. Continuing fears about American vulnerability alternate with images of American military prowess and patriotic bravado in a transformed media landscape charged with emotion and starved for information. The result is that we have had virtually no meaningful public debate about the radical turn US policy has taken since 9/11.

Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire is a riveting collection of 28 interviews with leading political thinkers that shows how the Bush administration has used the trauma of 9/11 and the war on terrorism to advance a radical and longstanding neo-conservative plan for global geopolitical domination. At the same time, it will clarify the ideological vision that has driven US international and domestic policy since 9/11, and will examine the political strategies that have been used to sell this ideological vision to the American people.

This collection includes interviews with Tariq Ali, Benjamin Barber, Noam Chomsky, Marc Danner, Fernando Suarez del Solar, Shadia Drury, Daniel Ellsberg, Michael Franti, Stan Goff, William Hartung, Bill Israel, Janine Jackson, Chalmers Johnson, Michael Klare, Karen Kwiatkowski, Norman Mailer, Zia Mian, Mark Crispin Miller, Kevin Ramirez, Scott Ritter, Vandana Shiva, Norman Solomon, Greg Speeter, Immanuel Wallerstein, Cindy Williams, Jody Williams, and Max Wolff.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Confuse the Book for the DVD.......2007-01-24

"Hijacking Catastrophe" is a well-researched educational documentary of the 9/11 attacks, the context that gave birth to them, and the way the US government has used them to promote its preconceived plan to solidify American empire through a global War on Terrorism. Unlike many other 9/11 films, like "Loose Change" and "Improbable Collapse" (both worth seeing), this film does not speculate about government complicity, it merely explains the roots of the neoconservative philosophy--a philosophy that does not shirk at deceiving the public to advance its selfish economic and political goals. Note, however, that this is not the DVD. This is the book version. Unfortunately, as of this writing, the DVD is not available on Amazon. If possible, you'll definitely want to get your hands on a copy. Along with "Hijacking Catastrophe," I would also recommend the DVD "9/11 Mysteries: Demolitions" and David Griffin's incisive, and well-argued book, "The New Pearl Harbor". Both are invaluable for understanding the inherent contradictions and scientific absurdities of the official 9/11 story.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Neo-Fascist Nightmare.......2005-05-29

Nothing new here. Anyone with the lights on knows what has been going on since the rise of the Bushies. This film, however, patches together much of the key information that helps blow away the smokescreen hoo-ha that the neo-cons have invented to sell their agenda. These cats (Bush, "Wolf"owitz, Cheney et. al.) make the Romans seem like schoolyard pranksters. There is only one problem with this film: it promotes the very thing it is trying to dispell ---- fear. All in all a great counterpunch but I suspect it will be another example of preaching to the choir.

5 out of 5 stars Awful And Chilling.......2005-03-29

First, I saw this as a documentary on a DVD of the same name, and that is how I plan to review this item. Produced by the Media Education Foundation, it most effectively presents the argument that the Bush administration "sold" the war via the most popular conduit of news - television. Using video news clips from mainstream media such as FoxNews, CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS, as well as interviews with extraordinarily credible officials and experts, Hijacking Catastrophe describes in chilling visual format how the NeoCons used 9/11 to push the country to accepting a military solution in fighting terrorism. Awful in its implications, this documentary should be seen by everyone who feels violated and mislead by our leaders. And some way should be found to show this to friends and family who still prefer the sleep of the deluded. I certainly wish I had the funds to buy thousands and leave them in every mailbox in the county.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Exploiting 9/11.......2005-02-21

This is an excellent collection of interviews on the subject of the neoconservative counterrevolution in Washington, and the strategies surrounding 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Behind the public statements of the administration lie the deeper motives of the operation: control of dwindling resources, intimidation with a display of military strength, and a neoconservative philosophy promoting an explicit imperialism. Exploiting the anxieties of the 9/11 catastrophe is the crux of the propaganda game. The text includes interviews with Tariq Ali, Chomsky, Benjamin Barber, Chalmers Johnson, and Shadia Drury who provides an interesting commentary on the hidden Straussianism of the neoconservative clique.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling Look at the NeoCon Agenda .......2004-10-11

You might consider buying this one and giving it to everyone you can think of. It's preaching to the choir of course: most of us who see it understand that the NeoCon group's approach to foreign policy is horrifyingly similar to that of Gary Cooper in HIGH NOON (the quintessential go-it-alone guy.) It's amazing to watch this film and realize how long the propaganda has been coming at us, manipulating us through our fears. If you're worried about the Wolfowitz/Rumsfeld/Bush triumverate and their quest for empire, this will only make you worry more. It's a very unsettling movie. At times, you might find yourself wishing you could turn off the background music, which is a bit melodramatic. But all told, this is an urgently important film - I only wish we could figure out how to get the Bush supporters to watch it. Any suggestions?

Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home. The documentary places the Bush Administration's false justifications for war in Iraq within the larger context of a two-decade struggle by neoconservatives to dramatically increase military spending in the wake of the Cold War, and to expand American power globally by means of military force. At the same time, the documentary argues that the Bush Administration has sold this radical and controversial plan for aggressive American military intervention by deliberately manipulating intelligence, political imagery, and the fears of the American people after 9/11. Narrated by Julian Bond, Hijacking Catastrophe features interviews with more than twenty prominent political observers, including Pentagon whistleblower Lt. Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, who witnessed first-hand how the Bush Administration set up a sophisticated propaganda operation to link the anxieties generated by 9/11 to a pre-existing foreign policy agenda that included a preemptive war on Iraq. Joining Kwiatkowski in a wide-ranging, accessible, and ultimately empowering analysis are former Chief UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter, former Pentagon analyst Daniel Ellsberg, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer, MIT professor Noam Chomsky, Code Pink founder Medea Benjamin, defense policy analyst William Hartung, author Chalmers Johnson, Army Special Forces Master Sergeant Stan Goff (Ret.). At its core, the film places the deceptions of the Bush Administration within the larger frame of questions seldom posed in the mainstream.

This video traces the roots of Bush's foreign policy to the neo-conservative think tanks and their "Project For A New American Century,' wherein they envisioned a new American Empire after the Soviet Union broke up. Consisting of interviews with former military, foreign service personnel, authors and analysts, it is informative, thoughtful but also deeply disturbing. It shows and reveals a dark side of American foreign policy, a side that not only the patriots and flag-wavers, but probably most Americans, do not want to know or see........

                                          Book Description

This book traces the environment movement in Australia from the first visionaries who pressed for preservation of native fauna and for sanitation in cities to a mass social movement that challenges the most powerful interests in society. It covers the major environmental issues that have been at the forefront of Australian politics since the 1960s.

4 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Reading.......2000-04-19

While in essence a history of a movement, covering over 200 years, this books brings the past to life, inciting the reader to search for deeper meaning, and seek out reasoning which may have previously been overlooked.

Another excellent feature is the colleciton of photos - I only wish there were more.

A fantastic read, for anyone interested in the environment movement, and in particular the politics and the people behind it. A book no university student in related fields should overlook.

From the author: This paper addresses issues related to the structure of social movements, the presence of diversity within movements and the management of the conflicts that diversity generates. It outlines and analyses the main dimensions of an unusually intense and bitter conflict that erupted between environmental activists in Sydney in the lead-up to the 1990 federal election. The paper's central argument is that the conflict analysed was a product of the incompatibility between one particular activist network's attempt to impose its political assessment on a crosssection of movement elites and the underlying segmentation, polycephaly and loose integration that characterises the movement's structure. While the paper uses the Sydney case study as an illustrative vehicle, the themes and issues discussed have a broader applicability in the analysis of environment movement dynamics.
