Book Description
The Hundred Years War produced a fascinating and terrifying mixture of high chivalry with utter brutality and the devastation. The 'Black Prince' of Wales, England's first Duke and son of Edward III, proved a potent icon of the Plantagenet kings, at once inspiring to his troops with deeds of valour, a sense of the chivalric gesture, and a keen tactical sense. To his enemies, however, he stood as an angel of death whose ravages brought terror and panic toboth France and Spain. In this biography, recorded shortly after the Prince's death in 1376 by the herald of Sir John Chandos, the prince's deeds are celebrated and have been thus preserved. Translated in 1883 by Francisque-Michel, this hard-to-find text has been edited and reissued by the Chivalry Bookshelf, answering the call of reenactors and students of medieval or military history who have long sought for it.
Book Description
Through the figure of Harry Hooper (1887-1974), star of four World Series championship teams and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Paul Zingg describes baseball's transformation from an often rowdy spectacle to a respectable career choice and entertainment institution. Zingg chronicles Hooper's rise from a sharecropper background in California to college and then to the pinnacle of his sport. Boston's lead-off hitter and right fielder from 1909 to 1920, Hooper later played for the Chicago White Sox, managed in the Pacific Coast League, and coached Princeton's team. When he retired in 1925, he held every major fielding record for an American League right fielder. Hooper's diaries, memoirs, and six decades of letters offer a rich and colorful commentary on the evolution of the game, as well as insight into the tensions between a player's public and private lives.
Customer Reviews:
The book is as boring as Hooper was........2001-02-09
I suppose that when your subject was notoriously known for being boring and bland, it would be a monumental effort to write without getting caught in the web. Sadly, and despite Paul Zingg's best efforts, This book only solidifies the obvious...Harry Hooper, although a very good ballplayer, was also a very boring ballplayer. This was a difficult read because interest was so sporadic. Lets face it, Hooper is boring and so is the book. No fault of the author, moreso it is the subject.
Harry Hooper.......1999-12-01
Very informative and very interesting account of the life of Harry Hooper (my great-grandfather). This book helps put into perspective just how significant Harry's life was for the development of baseball in America. It was full of lots of facts that brought to life the greatest baseball players in the early 20th century. It is more than just baseball, but an account of one man's life. I would recommend this book for anyone who is a baseball fan.

Very useful.......2006-12-01
I got my copy of this for $10 at a second-hand bookshop that did not realise what an absolute gem they were sitting on. It is a brilliant book. It nicely captures all that was cool in the late '70s, but a lot of the advice and hints given out still work today. I'm wouldn't even consider myself a fashion person, but I love this book so much.
A Classic!.......2006-03-04
We saw a copy of Cheap Chic near the Carnavalet in
Paris....
for 150 Euros.
A definite classic...models, designers, interview with Diana Vreeland,
Yves St. Laurent.
And pictures....
One of my very favorites!.......2002-08-28
I find myself looking at and re-reading this book all the time. It is postively the best! Even though it's from 1978, it still imparts some very timeless information about building a wardrobe -- and it's fun to read at the same time. Buy it - you won't regret it!!!
One of the greats.......2000-02-15
If you're someone who seeks an individual fashion look, or wants to understand the styles of the 1960's-->80's, this book is a must-read. Brilliant ideas and inspirational photos. I absolutely love this book!

Book Description
“Invites Italian-Americans of all backgrounds to the family table to discuss how mob-related movies and television shows have affected the very notion of what their heritage still means in the 21st century.” —Allen Barra, The New York Sun
“A detailed, textured meditation. Whether De Stefano is summarizing causes of 19th-century Italian immigration, sketching the Mafia’s origin in Sicily, or dissecting the appeal of Hollywood mobster characters, he catches links to evolving capitalism, discomfort with modern society, psychological urges for strong father figures, and other complex topics not usually addressed by opponents of Mafia pop culture. [De Stefano] provokes hard thought about why the Mafia, to the exclusion of almost every other dimension of Italian American life, stays lodged in ‘the Mind of America.’” —Carlin Romano, The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Fascinating.” —James F. Sweeney, The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)
“Not a history of organized crime but a study of how we think about organized crime, more precisely about Italians and crime. . . Valuable and interesting.” —Elliott J. Gorn, Chicago Tribune
“A thoughtful, thorough analysis.” —Renee Graham, The Boston Globe

Both highly entertaining and Informative- A Must For Film Buffs & Italian Americans.......2007-01-19
The previous review is bizzarre and has nothing to do with what the book is actually about -- the Italian American experience and the myths that have been generated about them. The book operates on both an intellectual and pop culture level and is immensly readable- either from front to back or by chapter. You may never see such pop culture icons as 'The Sopranos' and 'The Godfather' the same again!

The Concrete Jungle and the Mages who live in it........2005-01-31
The Orphan's Survival Guide was a nice book which focused on the unguided magi of Mage the Ascension. I enjoyed this book a lot since it didn't focus on the battlefields of the Ascension war, but on the day-to-day struggles of magi in the concrete jungle. Yes the monsters that plague the modern World of Darkness was discussed but the book showed that an adversary can be a mere mortal and still pose a serious threat.
The best sections of the book included the bit on the Hollow Ones and the various magical paradigms utilized by magi who are unaffiliated with the established groups. Light on systems and mechanics the sections focused on the philosophies and beliefs necessary to help new players get started.
Survival was the focus of the book as opposed to Ascension Wars and personal Ascension itself. This was reflected in the spell list section. Many of the spells focused on practicality as opposed to out-right destruction and ethereal realm traveling.
A good companion to Destiny's Price and Mage Revised, the Orphans' Survival Guide will help storytellers and players alike. All PCs, regardless of their affiliations with the Traditions or Technocracy will find this book useful because it provides useful information on the nitty-gritty details needed to run a street campaign. Not all players or adversaries need to be bad-ass Nephandi or Marauders, nor do all games have to take place in the Umbra or a mystical land. This book will show you all the horrors that are right in the city and the Orphan magi that have to deal with them.
I Recommend a Dose of Cold, Harsh Reality.......2000-01-07
Amidst the plethora of truly unimpressive books White Wolf hasbeen putting out over the past couple years, there are actually a fewworth purchasing. If your interests lie in running a "street level" Mage game, this is one of them.
Picking up where Outcasts left off, this book takes an in-depth look at the lives, attitudes, and spirituality of the Orphans and manages to present material that's both new and useful. The lessons from characters at the beginning, and the more analytical look at Orphans near the end, can be good inspiration in your own game as well.
Unfortunately, as with most WW books, the vast majority of the pregenerated characters, templates, settings, and rotes in the book are dull and smack of a 'look how original I am!' attitude. Worse, there are far too many sections in this book where the authors feel the need to talk down to the reader. In fact, this tiresome trend has become increasingly prevalent in all WW books lately.
Lastly, well, it's the art. It's not bad, as such, just mediocre. Another trend in WW books in recent days.
Overall, my complaints with the book are largely aesthetic and don't nearly outweigh the valuable information and inspiration you can find. As long as you can put up with a little snottiness and the other typical WW...you'll probably enjoy this book. In short, I highly recommend it.

Only for the complete collection.......1999-07-11
If you're interested in the "orphan lifestyle" the book is fantastic. Great info on a true street-level game. However, it doesn't make the orphans more interesting or complex. No new character enhancements. Don't buy it if you're looking for a way to make orphans more appealing as a character option. Buy it if your looking for the harsh reality of orphan life.
One of the Best in a while.......1999-03-14
Well, okay, you might get turned off by some of the content, thats okay, its the WoD, your supposed to be uncomfortable, anyways, it is very, very good, and may give you a brand new prespective on mage, like it did to me, buy it, read it, and you will begin to see Mage through Orphan eyes...

I received my book in a torn up package that made a mess all over my living room. Then when i pulled the book out, the contents fell out while i was still holding the cover. If I hadn't had waited so long already for the book and didn't need it so badly, I would have sent it back in a heart beat. i was very disappointed.

The Forum is Greek Theater.......2007-06-24
The Forum, the successor to the est training, is predicated upon ancient Greek drama, which began hundreds of years before Christianity ever started. Bartley with his philosophical background has understood this like no other Werner critic. In his book on Werner, he describes the room set up as early example of a Greek theater. The est trainer, now the Forum leader, directs the audience, known as the Chorus in a Greek play, into a discussion of reality and how we know what we know. When you visit an archeological excavation of a Greek theater, the seats made of stone are described as where the audience sat. Bartley rightly points out that these archeologists do not know where the chorus sat. The actors were on the stage, but the chorus was in the audience. In fact, the audience was the chorus and was directed into a new reality by the actors present. Aristotle referred to this process as a catharsis. Bartley's contribution to the understanding of est trainings and its successors is to explain that the processes involved including the room set up are as old as ancient Greek plays if not older.
The principal process conducted in the room during an est training is the transfer of knowledge from the trainer to the participant during a "share". In this case, a participant stands up and "shares" their experience and is directly only by the trainer. There is no audience voting or criticism. However, Bartley shows that this process that is strictly controlled in this environment is a direct example of the Socratic method. While law schools use the Socratic method as a major method to transfer knowledge, the est training transfers knowledge from the trainer to the participant in an emotional sense concerned with different points of view or "possibilities" as the Forum now examines in its own sessions.
While I read the Bartley book years ago and have taken both the est training and the Forum, I cannot forget the references to Greek Theater. We know very little about the ancient Greeks. We know that they had music, but we have no examples of their music. They also had a religion, and it was more than a collections of myths. It was an est training.
The Revolution Begins.......2005-08-06
Truly extraordinary. I've been participating in Landmark Education for nearly 6 years now; the difference its made in my life is too much to talk about in this little review, and what's important to me now is the difference its made in the lives of the people around me. It's not that our lives are paradisical. We aren't turning to white light; turning to white light has stopped being a concern since we are playing from what is possible, rather than what is wrong - even those of us who haven't done the Forum. This book has given me a powerful context from which to view my own participation, the phenomenon of transformation, Landmark Education as its now organized and the future of the discourse. That someone who was such an unremitting a--hole to the people in his life for such a very long time found his a--holeness to be the fuel for a new realm of being by looking at it head-on and TRYING ON that he's responsible for all is irrefutable testament to the possibility of being human, testament to a possibility against which riches, fame, being written of in the history books, and "power" without it are shadows. I too am an a-hole. No longer needing to pretend I'm not has given me the freedom to INVENT what my life is about. Reading this book has given me a new gratitude to those on whose shoulders I stand. I know I am not alone as I test the discourse and invite all of you to extend it into uncharted realms. Most of transformation's story has yet to be written. You may read this and think I'm a cult member. That's perfect. That's right where we're supposed to be right now. I acknowledge your concern. And with critical thinking fully intact, and knowing the risks, I putting my money on transformation.
A historical document which will be invaluable in the future.......2004-09-20
I first read this book back in 1978 when I was able to purchase a copy while at est, training to be a guest seminar leader. I was shocked at the honesty, openness and candid way in which Werner's life was laid out. It showed me that it is possible to live your life in a way that you would not be ashamed to have it published for the world to see. The way he cleaned up all of the mischief of his younger years, and then used it to make a difference inspired me then, and it inspires me today. One of his mentors, Alan Watts, once called Werner a "rogue." This always induced a chuckle from Werner. Indeed he was, but this didn't stop him from making a positive difference to society and to millions of people. Werner often said he took the "low road" to enlightenment. He did everything wrong, as a way of learning what worked. As a fellow, "low-roader" I am inspired to continue my own growth, despite all of my mistakes in life. The late Mr. Bartley has created a document which will be invaluable when historians look back at the age of the transformation of humanity. We are living in the middle of it, an can't yet see the forest for the trees.
Conversations For Transformation.......2004-09-18
You won't get transformed reading this book. The way you get transformed is by participating in Werner's programs and by speaking and listening transformation in face to face conversations with people. That is why, for the most part, Werner's work has never been widely distributed in books, films, video and audio tape, or other media. Transformation is not gotten that way. Transformation is being in conversations for transformation.
Having said that, this book is remarkable on two fronts.
In the first instance, this very human story of how Werner's life headed inexorably from birth toward that fateful moment out of time on the Golden Gate Bridge when he experienced transformation for the first time makes for riveting reading.
In the second instance, Bill Bartley has provided intersecting chapters giving the essence of the various disciplines Werner immersed himself in before he experienced transformation and then created the est training out of his own authentic experience of who he really is. Each one of these intersections alone is worth the price of the book itself. They are masterfully crafted gems, distilling the very essence of each discipline in very few words - a difficult task for most writers in this genre, yet one in which Bill Bartley succeeds brilliantly.
The book ends after the creation of the est training and does not cover subsequent iterations of Werner's work like the Landmark Forum.
The sense of transformation which pervades this book (which you will want to read again and again and again) is palpable to the point where if you have ever wondered what transformation is, in reading this book you will almost be able to taste it.
Read this book.
*** Twice enLIGHTENment of WE *** a six-star biography.......2004-09-17
I have 3 copies of this book, two bought in 1996 after I took the Forum in Jan. & one bought on July 12 this year. I randomly read it again this time. I realized that the initials for Werner Erhard is WE, so is America as US. He was born Sept. 5, 1935 as Jack Rosenberg on p.4. He had a few Near Death Experience as a kid.
When 12 year-old, his 'fall from heaven' story happened with a broken nose & his mom being pregnant & as described on p.19 "when an identity is forged out of a situation and a relationship". He "felt worthless, useless, redundant, superfluous", this was his self-definition from that story. His 'winning formula' is "I have to be bad in order to be good, I have to get people to hate me in order to get people to love me, and I have to be unhappy in order to be happy" from pp.21-23.
This explains completely why 3 of his daughters accused him 44 years later of sexual molestation in the book "60 Minutes and the Assassination of Werner Erhard" about the March 3, 1991 CBS show. One's own 'fall from heaven' story is very 'pervasive' and explains one's life completely even for those who achieved mastery, like WE did after experiencing 2 occurrence of enlightenment.
Werner left his wife without a divorce and disappeared with June Bryde on May 25,1960 which he later married by changing their name, his to WE and hers to Ellen Erhard.
In Oct. 1963, when 28, He experienced his first enlightenment which he describes on pp. 107-109 as "a peak experience of what I call SELF... It was a profound sense of Self. I truly experienced the SELF-not the my Self: the word 'my' belongs to the world of concept about Self, not experience of Self. I was carried out of my ordinary state, not merely to another state, but to the context for all states, the context of all contexts. Of course in 1963 I didn't have the means to express the matter in this way. Although I had experienced Self, I didn't yet know how to talk about it. It was only later, as I worked through Zen, and Scientology, and other disciplines, that I began to understand the matter better...it made my life magical for a while. My ordinary experience totally altered."
Too bad, as narrated in "Enlightenment Lost" by the author on p.112 "yet his relationship with his family remained a quagmire of unfinished business...He and Ellen talked of contacting their families, and decided against it." So Werner chose to continue to lie to himself & his family.
"Of all the disciplines that I studied, practiced, learned, Zen was the essential one. It was not so much an influence on me; rather, it created SPACE." on p.121.
On March 1971 when 35 years old, while driving & before reaching the Golden Gate Bridge Werner got what he searched for 8 years in various disciplines including Dale Carnegie course & Mind Dynamics, etc. In his own words from p.166 (which again contains my number which is in all my reviews): "What happened had no form. It was timeless, unbounded, ineffable, beyond language. There were no words attached to it, no emotions or feelings, no attitudes, no bodily sensations. What came from it, of course, formed itself into feelings and emotions and words, and finally into an altered process of life itself...
"Part of it was the realization that I knew nothing. I was aghast at that...Then this happened-and I realized that I KNEW NOTHING. I realized that everything I knew was skewed toward some end. I saw that the fundamental skew of all knowledge, and to UNENLIGHTENED mind, is SURVIVAL, or, as I put it then, SUCCESS. All my knowledge up to then had been skewed toward success, toward making it, toward self-realization, toward all the goals, from material to mystical.
"In the next instant-after I realized that I knew nothing-I realized that I KNEW EVERYTHING. All the things that I had ever heard, and read, and all those hours of practice, suddenly fell into place. It was so STUPIDLY, blindingly SIMPLE that I could not believe it. I saw that there were no hidden meanings, that everything was just the way that it is, and that I was already all right. All that knowledge that I have amassed just obscured the simplicity, the truth, the suchness, the thusness of it all.
"I saw that everything was going to be all right. It was all right; it always had been all right; it always will be all right-no matter what happened. I didn't just think this: suddenly I knew it. Not only was I no longer concerned about success; I was no longer even concerned about achieving satisfaction. I was SATISFIED. I was no onger concerned with my reputation; I was concerned only with the truth.
"I realized that I was not my emotions or thoughts. I was not my ideas, my intellect, my perceptions, my beliefs. I was not what I did or accomplished or achieved. Or hadn't achieved. I was not what I had done right-or what I had done wrong. I was not what I had been labeled-by myself or others. All these identifications cut me off from experience, from living. I WAS NONE OF THESE.
"I WAS simply the SPACE, the CREATOR, the SOURCE of all that stuff. I experienced SELF as SELF in a direct and unmediated way. I didn't just experience Self; I BECAME SELF. Suddenly I held all the information...For I was its source. I found enlightenment, truth, and true self all at once"
In Oct. 1971 est was born. On pp.186-191 Werner narrated 3 stories as the core of his est training, the first 2 are 'fall from heaven' examples while the 3rd is an example of 'love is letting go of fear'.
His first wife Pat "got a divorce on grounds of desertion". In Oct. 1972, a year after the 1st est session, Werner FINALLY got in touch with his extended large family which he deserted 12 years ago.
This book ended with the prophecy that-the Buddhist teachings and knowledge of enlightenment-would go to the West "when iron birds fly and horses have wheels." So let me dump a prophecy of my own, on the coming Sept 21, 2004 something will happen that has direct impact on Bush. Did you see the bumper sticker that proclaim that "Clinton is the president that did it in between the Bush"?

why try so hard?.......2003-12-30
It amazes me no end how hard the cultists of cultism work to try to bad-mouth the est Training & Werner Erhard and the new Landmark Education Forum, as in a few reviews below. I did the est Training in 1978 and have been using the technology of transformation in my life every day since, something the cultists cannot fathom. And that is so even when I'm not able to participate in Landmark courses, such as the multi-week seminars. I saw a redneck bigot give up his bigotry in a weekend during the CAP Course, and that was not even a covered topic -- the man moved from racial slurs to asking to hug the 250-pound black man that he had offended the day before.
I honor Werner Erhard and the est/Landmark technology because it happens to work quite well when applied to one's life. Didn't work for a reviewer below? Maybe because he needs a reason for his life not working... My life might be full of tribulation, but applying the Landmark technology turns things around every time.
A Extraordinary Man Who Transformed His Ideas into Action.......2003-05-10
I read this book 19 years ago and it inspired me to live fully. Through his early turmoil into later clarity and beyond his normal bounds into extraordinary invention, he brought forth a completely new way of life that we all may share. Read this book to disabuse yourself of all the pandering known "facts" about Werner, and experience for yourself the greatness he invites all of us to be. He dares to posit that the natural state for all of us is one of joy. Anything other than that is a opportunity to face head on, acknowledge, and move through. A truly profound man.

Too much bias........2006-05-12
This author of this book knows nothing about aircraft and keeps repeating the same old anti-U.S. myths.
The Avro project started in '53 with an advanced specification. An aircraft was built by the branch plant of the British A.V. Roe company to try to satisfy this specification. The program was a little unusual in that it was funded with taxpayers money instead of being a private venture.
What Avro proposed was a giant (over 40,000 lbs. empty) tailess delta without canards. It would have been right at home with any delta of the mid-fifties if it had been in service then. Sadly it was still in the prototype stage long after tailess deltas had became obsolete due to lack of manueverability.
The Arrow really was killed by an American conspiracy but it did not involve the U.S. government or the C.I.A. The actual conspiracy was by a group of McDonnell-Douglas employees who intentionally worked together to build a better aircraft. That was the F4 Phantom II and it was in all respects better than the Arrow, or any other previous aircraft for that matter. The "Phantom" ate up every potential market for the Arrow and the project was cancelled by a fiscally responsible government. No government conspiracy only the financing of a 'white elephant' by an irresponsible Canadian government.
What the U.S. government was actually doing at the time was funding stupid Canadian projects like the Avro VZ-9A flying disc. When that project produced nothing of value the U.S. government, in typical fashion, let the company keep the money. These are NOT the actions of an enemy.
The Arrow debacle is a perfect example of why the lawyers in Ottawa should not be funding research into things they do not understand. After the project bombed it was no surprise that the Liberals ordered every Arrow destroyed. That way they would never have to account for the millions of taxpayers' dollars that were wasted on this white elephant. Lack of evidence also meant that they could completely rewrite history without fear of contradiction. Even better, they managed to blame the destruction on the opposition. Pretty slick, Eh?
This book is too biased to be of use to fact seekers. As a Canadian I am embarassed that it is available for the world to read and saddened by the harm that it has caused. Keep looking if you want some sense of balance.
The Blame Game.......2003-08-28
The writer of this book does a lot of "American bashing", that is to say "Americans caused this" and "Americans caused that"... While the author quickly covers over some facts that the military reported costs inaccurately to it's on Parliament when the decisions were made; with little investigation into the details (such as why). Near the image of the Bomarc, he stats that it was unproven technology. However the Bomarc was delayed due to it's over-accurate "problems". It is likely true that some strong arming (politically) was done, however, little if any finger pointing is going back to the poor leadership that lead to the destruction of the Arrow, and the downturn of the Canadian economy. There is a wealth of information, however one must read between the lines to the frequent bad conclusions drawn -- like claiming that the SR-71 and the Arrow have the same cockpit (from an outside centerline image)
If you want the concise truth, this is the book........2003-03-24
Of all the books on this subject that I have read, this author offers the most compelling arguments as to why this landmark aircraft and engine project was concelled. And if you are an American, it is not flattering, because there was much behind-the-scenes maneuvering by the U.S. to 1) ensure that potential nuclear war was conducted over Canada and not the Northern U.S, 2) protect the interests of the U.S. aerospace industry by pursuading the Canadians to purchase our weapons systems even though those systems could not answer the defense needs of Canada. And then there is the tragedy of the project itself. As an aerospace engineer, I fully appreciate how advanced this aircraft was for the mid 50's. If this project had been allowed to continue to completion, I have no doubt that the Arrow would still be flying today. And finally, with the demise of the Arrow, the Canada aerospace industry suffered a 20 year setback, as did their economy.
I would say this is the best book I've read on the Arrow. But the story doesn't end here. Some incredibly technically talented people left Canada for the U.S. and made valued contributions to our space program. This is all well described in Chris Gainor's "Arrows to the Moon". Read both and get the entire story.
Towards the Truth.......2001-03-15
Campagna worked for the Department of National Defence in Canada. As such he knows how the government operates when it comes to embarrassing information, and he also knows where much of it is stored.
Apparently he came to the conclusion that the Americans were behind much of the intrique that went on and in the end killed not only the Arrow program, but also the company itself! He does an excellent job of bringing forward documents which really demonstrate the undercurrent of intrigue, deceipt and cover-up that surrounded this program.
Campagna also includes a fair amount of information to demonstrate how first class the Avro products and engineering etc. really was. At the same time he allows the politicians to demonstrate their ignorance, wrong-headedness, and in fact manifest dishonesty over the program by direct quotations. The existence of a hidden agenda emerges yet Campagna restrains himself, for the most part, on speculation.
All in all an excellent effort. This book broke alot of ground and goes some distance towards pointing out what Canada lost on February 20th 1959.
If I have one criticism of the work, it is this: there isn't very much context about the aircraft being designed elsewhere, and about the industry and Cold War in general. I think this kind of context would have better demonstrated the Avro story in terms of its value to Canada and the West as a whole.
Do Americans make mistakes?.......2000-06-09
Who runs Canada?
The Queen of England, according to some Americans, though most would say "Canadians elect their own government." In Canada, similar to many countries, there's a suspicion the Americans really control everything important.
The Avro Arrow, a delta-wing twin-engine jet interceptor with a top speed of about 400 miles an hour faster than the F-18, came off the assembly line in Canada in 1957. It was in production, with six finished and 30 more on the assembly line, when it was canceled by the government on Feb. 20, 1959. Since then, the fate of the Arrow has become representative of what many Canadians feel is the second-rate role of their country in comparison to the United States.
Campagna blames the Americans, who told the Colonel Blimps in the Canadian military in the late 1950's that bombers were obsolete and only missiles would matter in the future. Sure, tell THAT to the guys who still drive the B-52's, B-1's and B-2's around the skies. I blame the Colonel Blimps, who listened to the Yanks with all the innocence of little old ladies in tennis shoes trusting a used car salesman with a Yugo to sell.
Well, maybe the Americans were wrong. Bombers continue to fly, interceptors continue to be built. It's not the first time an American has made a mistake. In the U.S., cancellation of an aircraft contract is barely noticed; in Canada, the Arrow was the only fighter interceptor in the whole country. Many Americans would say, "Well, that's life in the big city." For Canadians, with an economy about one twelfth the size of the U.S., it was devastating.
It's what makes this book so valuable for Americans. It boldly lays out the devastating impact a minor decision in the United States can have for a little country trying so hard to produce quality home-designed products. American companies have had dozens of promising fighter projects canceled -- but, dozens survived. In little countries, national pride often rests on a single project. When it is scrapped because of anything involving Americans -- even as innocuous as "Give me your honest opinion, now, don't spare my feelings" -- the result can be devastating.
It was the best in the world -- see my review of `The Immortal Beaver' for another best-in-the-world Canadian airplane, one the Americans bought in great quantities -- but the Arrow was canceled due to faulty American advice (Campagna's view). My view is that Canadians were dumb to listen to the Americans. Whatever, the result is lingering anti-Americanism.
When Americans ask, "Why don't they like us?" about any foreign country, the reason is often as innocuous as the loss of an Arrow. That makes this book valuable for Americans, to understand the impact of their mistakes on foreigners who trust them to know everything. It shows how, even when they are being helpful, kind, courteous and considerate, American advice is sometimes devastating. Do you really expect a guy with a Yugo to tell you there's a better deal just down the street?
That's life as a World Power. It's not about to change. Mexico has similar complaints about the US, but when Guatemalans complain about "the colossus to the north" they mean Mexico and not the US. Little countries will always have this attitude about their big neighbors, and this book is an excellent example of the lingering resentment it causes. It's why some preach isolationism, to avoid such headaches. For others, it is an invaluable primer on the troubles that even the best and most honest intentions can cause.
Anyone who deals with Canada will find it offers a valuable insight to the schizophrenic attitude of love/hate for everything American, and the attendant pride/doubt about anything Canadian. It's well worth it for any American to read Storms of Controversy.
Book Description
Gilroy demonstrates the enormous complexity of racial politics in England today. Exploring the relationships among race, class, and nation as they have evolved over the past twenty years, he highlights racist attitudes that transcend the left-right political divide. He challenges current sociological approaches to racism as well as the ethnocentric bias of British cultural studies.
"Gilroy demonstrates effectively that cultural traditions are not static, but develop, grow and indeed mutate, as they influence and are influenced by the other changing traditions around them."—David Edgar, Listener Review of Books.
"A fascinating analysis of the discourses that have accompanied black settlement in Britain. . . . An important addition to the stock of critical works on race and culture."—David Okuefuna, Chicago Tribune
Customer Reviews:
convoluted.......2006-02-28
Gilroy's Black Atlantic is a much stronger piece. In many ways, this title ('Ain't No Black') seems to be working up to the conclusions he draws in Black Atlantic. Also, his writing in this work is not as strong as Black Atlantic. He could definitely use a decent editor who could take out all those extraneous prepositional phrases that he seems to LOVE. He could be a good deal more concise and coherent.
Jolly Good.......2000-05-02
Paul Gilroy's 'There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack' offers an intriguing examination of race relations in Britain in the 1980s. Gilroy, unlike numerous other theorists, sees the interconnectedness between those discourses around race, class, and gender, and its impact on the black British community. Furthermore, Gilory advances the notion that "materialist theory of culture has much to contribute to 'race relations' analysis" (16). I highly recommend Gilroy's other works in addition to this one. His writing is clear and his dexterity with the topic of race in Britain is unsurpassed.

Book Description
As the twenty-first century commences, the countries of Pacific Asia are grappling with the impact of regional development, industry, and growth on their increasingly acute environmental problems. International Environmental Cooperation: Politics and Diplomacy in Pacific Asia brings together innovative and insightful studies of international environmental politics in this increasingly critical part of the world.
The first section of the book examines many of the issues and actors impacting international environmental cooperation, highlighting important themes such as cooperation between developed and developing countries, international justice, and regional environmental security. This section also illustrates key features of specific multilateral environmental agreements and the competing interests of important national bodies, international organizations, multinational corporations, and nongovernmental entities. The second section focuses on environmental diplomacy and regime-building in Pacific Asia, examining issues such as acid rain, nuclear waste, deforestation, and conflict over regional seas. Contributors from Asia, Europe, and North America bring an international perspective to questions of environmental cooperation.
International Environmental Cooperation provides policymakers, citizens, scholars and students with essential information for understanding and addressing some of the world's most significant environmental problems.
