    Book Description

The Correspondence is a breathtaking achievement, being a transcription of some 923 letters to and from Lord Overstone between 1804 and 1883. Overstone maintained that he had destroyed all his correspondence before he died, and Professor O'Brien's important discovery of some 350 of them in 1964 was significant for understanding an enigmatic figure, highly important in nineteenth-century currency debates, and an active director of the Bank of England for over fifty years.

Correspondents include J. R. McCulloch, Robert Torrens, and George Warde Norman. With biographical sketches of all named people included in the numerous footnotes, plus introductions, appendices and indices, this collection forms an important source for the understanding of ninenteenth-century banking and political economy in Britain. Originally published in 1971 Thoemmes Press is pleased to make this important out-of-print scholarly work available once more. It will prove invaluable to all academic libraries with departments in British economic history, finance and banking.

--first collected edition of Overstone's correspondence, including letters believed to have been destroyed
--scholarly new introductory material, plus biographical sketches, appendices and indices
--important for economic historians and in particular, British banking and finance in the nineteenth century

          Book Description

During twenty-five years of collaboration, Bruce and Norman Yonemoto have created an impressive array of perceptive, inventive, and provocative films, single-channel videos, video installations, and objects that explore the creation of meaning through filmic representation and analyze mass media's hold on our perceptions of personal identity. Using film and video as both a medium and a theme for their art, the Yonemoto brothers search and examine a cross-cultural territory of interdimensional thoughts and personalities. An elegant and comprehensive monograph containing in-depth commentary and extensive stills from such internationally recognized works as, Based on Romance and Green Card: An American Romance. A long-awaited book on two of Southern California's major contemporary video artists.

          Book Description

If you're into anime (and manga), there's no place like Neo Tokyo. Here otaku dress-up cos-play style for real, 100,000+ fans attend cons to buy and trade, and anime soundtracks are performed in concert halls. Neo Tokyo is where anime has become both urban fashion and cultural zeitgeist, and this is its first street-smart guide in English. Featuring interviews with tastemakers, it covers studios, toys, museums, games, film "locations," music, plus where to hang and how to cruise. Four-color, with maps and index.

Patrick Macias, a specialist in Asian film and Japanese pop culture, is the author of TokyoScope.

Tomohiro Machiyama is a movie critic and journalist who writes and publishes in Japan. Both authors live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

"Useful guide for pop-culture tourists, it's stil an enjoyable read even if you never visit Tokyo." -- Fortean Times

"The perfect accessory for geeks who've saved up enough for a plane ticket to Japan and a few hundred thousand yen of walking-around money." -- Wired

"Although not for the easily disturbed, for every other anime fan/dilettante with a desire to visit, Cruising the Anime City is fun, fun, fun!" -- Library Journal

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful on the latest trip!!.......2005-06-10

We bought "Cruising..." while preparing for our third trip and first solo excursion to Japan. Not only was it an interesting read, but the neighborhood information and maps were invaluable once we arrived. The turnover for small businesses in Japan is high, however, most of the things we were looking for were still available. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection!

4 out of 5 stars Geeks Guide to Tokyo.......2005-04-12

This is the geek's guide to Tokyo-and much more. It is guidebook, social commentary, and a peak into the latest trends on the otaku scene. And all before they hit the shores of the West. Cruising the Anime City: An Otaku Guide to Neo Tokyo covers the studios that produce anime; includes interviews with the movers and shakers in the industry; discusses the toys, museums, film "locations," music, etc.; and has detailed maps of that otaku mecca Akihabara.
Macias has written a comprehensive guide that does not speak down to beginners. It is written in a witty style and handsomely illustrated. Then, in a piece de resistance, there is the Great Gathering, the Mythical Beast of the Otaku Calendar: the annual Comiket 65. This is the yearly "Comic Market," a three-day festival held at Tokyo Big Site. All the sub-cultures are featured here; it is geek nirvana. Macias covers this with élan and humor. For those thinking of making the trip to Comiket or Tokyo itself-or just read about this fascinating world from home-this is the indispensable guide.

5 out of 5 stars Written especially for hardcore Japanese animation fans.......2005-03-11

Cruising The Anime City: An Otaku Guide To Neo Tokyo is a guide written especially for hardcore Japanese animation fans, video game players, and the like who want to know what to expect if they visit Tokyo in person - or who just want to armchair travel and imagine shopping! A street-smart guide in plain English, brightly illustrated with full-color photographs throughout, Cruising The Anime City discusses where to get the best deals on Japanese comics, where to find collectible toys, how to avoid cell-phone scams when crusing games from pachinko to porno and everything in between, a guide to finding memorabilia relating to one's favorite idol singer, and much more. Though basic travel information (lodging concerns, roadmaps and the like) is deliberatetly left up to more traditional guides, Cruising The Anime City is a "must-have" for the collector who needs to know "the" hottest shopping spots in Tokyo!

5 out of 5 stars Planning a trip to Tokyo or not, you'll love this book........2005-01-26

If I did some day get the chance to go to Tokyo, I don't think this would be the only book that I would bring, as it most likely wouldn't make for a very good stand alone travel guide.

HOWEVER, it does detail many of the essential otaku-points-of-intrest in the anime city. If anime, manga, model building, idols, cosplaying or Tokyo are subjects that grab your attention, then you won't be dissapointed.

I found this book to be exceptionally well written with detailed pictures and very informative, whether your going to Tokyo or not. In fact, It made me want to call my travel agent and start learning Japanese. Kudos to Patric Macias (and the other guy too).

1 out of 5 stars This book is worthless!.......2007-09-14

There is nothing in this book to help anyone study for tests. It gives definitions to words like "logistcs" and "econmony," but ingnores stuff you reall need to know, like in Chapter 6 -- the five reasons for keeping inventory!

            DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

1 out of 5 stars would not recommend.......2006-10-15

we are in the logistics business and I reviewed this book as a potential teaching tool for management. The book is unfortunatley of little to no value. Most concerning is that the mathematics for inventory management, a critical factor in understanding logistics, are simply wrong. Even a quick look by anyone familiar with inventory management would find this concerning.

            5 out of 5 stars Immediate delivery.......2005-07-04

The book was in great condition for being used amd I received it in half the time!

5 out of 5 stars This book has been dramatically improved in the 7th edition.......2002-05-03

The book takes the reader progressively from the most simple concepts to the complexities of logistics. It is true that this is not a quantitive book, but it is a very conceptual and didactic logistics book with many cases and graphs. An internet site provided by the publisher with transparencies, internet site references, and other supports to this book makes it an excellent tool. There is a lot of value in the package offered.

2 out of 5 stars Leaves much to be desired.......2000-10-19

This book is used at my college and it is really soft on hard information. It is full of generalizations and impressive industry jargon but offers little practical information to take into industry. The cost does not justify what you get in my opinion. More case examples would be helpful and more analytical methods described with realistic scenarios could really improve it. I would not recommend it unless absolutely necessary.

From the author: Environmental uncertainty plays a crucial role in the implementation of strategic supply management initiatives. The current study adopts the resource dependence theory to explain the direct effect of supply chain uncertainties on strategic supply management, operationalized as a second-order construct comprising strategic purchasing, long-term relationship orientation, interfirm communication, cross-organizational teams and supplier integration. Using structural equation modeling, the 200-firm sample provided evidence that strategic supply management is driven by supply and technology uncertainty. Demand uncertainty, on the other hand, was not found to have a significant impact on strategic supply management. Findings further support the link between strategic supply management and the performance of both buying and supplying firms.

From the author: In today's environment, businesses are increasingly dependent on the relationships they have with their suppliers and are demanding that they adhere to high standards. It is increasingly important that buyers have strong relationships with their suppliers to stay ahead of competition. The establishment, development, and maintenance of relationships between exchange partners is crucial to achieving success (Morgan and Hunt 1994). The goal of this research is to further investigate the nature of buyer-seller relationships from the buyer's perspective and to address the question--what determines the quality of buyer-seller relationships? Many factors may contribute to the quality of a buyer-seller relationship. Quality may depend on the nature of the organizations involved, the individuals in the organizations, and the nature of the situation. This study considers two main sets of variables, interpersonal and aspects of the relationship. Interpersonal variables describe the characteristics of individual company representatives, while aspects of the relationship variables describe the situations buyers and sellers face. A unique aspect of this study is that it considers the role both of individuals and of the organizations they represent.

The abduction of teenager Elizabeth Smart by a fundamentalist Mormon preacher placed a renewed focus on renegade offshoots of the Church of Latter Day Saints and the culture surrounding the religion in the state of Utah (which, like the church, formally opposes polygamous marriage, though state and religious leaders both seem well aware that the practice continues, and they often turn a blind eye toward it). Like Natalie R. Collins's 2003 novel SisterWife, Dorothy Allred Solomon's Predators, Prey, and Other Kinfolk couldn't seem more topical, but it is an even more powerful book because it has the weight of truth behind it. "I am the daughter of my father's fourth plural wife, twenty-eight of forty-eight children—a middle kid, you might say," her frank memoir begins, and Solomon (a freelance writer who now lives in a happily monogamous marriage in Park City, Utah) maintains a similarly gripping and poignant tone through the book. Her family's story is a fascinating one: Her father, the physician Rulon Allred, was also a fundamentalist preacher and a closet polygamist who went to great lengths to keep his plural marriages and sprawling family a secret from society at large. In 1977, he was shot to death by assassins from a rival fundamentalist sect, the bloody end to a misguided lifestyle that had already taken a severe emotional toll on many around him. His daughter does not hesitate to expose the violent and sexist behavior that permeates many of these cultish offshoots of the Mormon Church, but she does not reduce the believers to one-dimensional caricatures, either, and in the process of sharing a very personal tale, she often steps back to place it all in the much broader context of religion and society, charting the history of the Mormons and the contradictions between ideals and actions on the part of both church and state. --Jim DeRogatis

                              Book Description

"I am the daughter of my father's fourth plural wife, twenty-eighth of forty-eight children—a middle kid, you might say."

So begins this astonishing memoir of life in the family of Utah fundamentalist leader and naturopathic physician Rulon C. Allred. Since polygamy was abolished by manifesto in 1890, this is a story of secrecy and lies, of poverty and imprisonment and government raids. When raids threatened, the families were forced to scatter from their pastoral compound in Salt Lake City to the deserts of Mexico or the wilds of Montana. To follow the Lord's plan as dictated by the Principle, the human cost was huge. Eventually murder in its cruelest form entered when members of a rival fundamentalist group assassinated the author's father.

Dorothy Solomon, monogamous herself, broke from the fundamentalist group because she yearned for equality and could not reconcile the laws of God (as practiced by polygamists) with the vastly different laws of the state. This poignant account chronicles her brave quest for personal identity.

What a scintillating assertion of a lifestyle so foreign to most people. People are often in awe of the idea that such practices are still observed. This book matches personalities to the unnamed faces so often seen in the media relating to polygamy. Losing the idea of "polygamy is good/polygamy is bad," Ms. Solomon does an excellent job of turning individuals into protagonists and antagonists, making these characters live for all readers.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Account - Keep In Mind, it's an Autobiography .......2006-04-28

I recently discussed this book with a friend whose an avid reader and an active participant in a women's book club. She was afraid the younger women wouldn't care for the book because it lacks dialogue. Such a shame and yet I wonder if it's that glamor and glitz that so many autobiographers interject into today's books (such as James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces") that contemporary readers look for and are disappointed when it isn't provided.

I, on the other hand, found this a fascinating tale that really delved into the mindset of those involved, regardless of how they were involved, in polygamy. Dorothy Allred Solomon, the daughter of a polygamist, writes about her experiences and recollections of life on the compound that expands into a detailed historical account of the polygamist movement, the fight to disband and abolish polygamy, the covert movement in the polygamist following and the shame that the by-products of polygamy, which includes Dorothy, had to come to terms with as they began blending in with monogamist families to escape the persecution that ensued.

The author writes the majority from the viewpoint of when she was a child, so I felt there was a fair amount that may have been influenced by the age she was when these events occurred. As the author recounts events that occurred later in her life, I felt some important elements may have been left out as it became devoid of the detail, bereft with the emotion that pummelled the first portion of her life and the book.

Yet, it's still a moving book that while it's dry in dialogue, allows the reader to get a good sense of what the author's family and the author herself had to deal with whether it was raw emotions and confusion or the outward reproach of society.

3 out of 5 stars Good in som spots, but mainly a bore.......2006-03-26

This book started off strong and with much promise, but soon deteriorated.I really could have done without the 3-4 chapters of great-great-grandmothers and other ancestors. The story never really recovered after that and I kept reading in hope that the power from the begining would show up.

However, the story was interesting and the author's brash honesty was refreshing. While it is not pertinent to the book itself, it is easy to see that this woman is a genuinely good person and has ever turned out normal despite such an unusual upbringing. She has the traits of forgiveness and tries to really see the best in people-- something we could ALL use a lesson in.

I loved this book. I love that she spoke her truth. I love the inside look into this fringe community. I think her writing style is beautiful and I found myself writing down some lines written so well I wanted to remember them. The added stories at the end were my favorite. Bravo! This book inspires me to take that creative writing course I keep thinking about. I love reading and I love writing and this book is an example of someone else who feels the same way.

Soloman does an excellent job being as objective as possible. This is a wonderfully writen autobiography that does not try to persuade for or against polygamy, but educates you on an idea totally foriegn to most of us. I was amazed at how common and close this practice is. I am recommending it to all my friends for the sake of awareness.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting and informative account of danger at sea..........1999-07-13

This is a very exciting book with a very realistic, and certainly not boring, account of a boat semi-adrift for about a month without water and without food in the South Atlantic Ocean. This is a very true World War II story, with the Doggerbank being a German supply ship (blockade runner) returning from Japan and bound for German-occupied France with its precious cargo, and the ship being sunk mistakenly by a German submarine before it reached its assigned port.

The book is a translation, so you can expect some of that clumsiness that occurs in such instances; however I was impressed how well the story came through in English -- during the early part of the book the reader could almost smell the diesel fumes from the old German ships as well as the sauerkraut that the German chef was famous for cooking down in the ship's galley.

The book is divided into three parts: (1) how the sole survivor of the Doggerbank managed to finagle his way aboard the ship; (2) the second part is very suspenseful as the Doggerbank passes through a school of u-boats; and (3) the third part is the very best account of how people behave and hold up during a shipwreck (and I've read Nordoff and Hall and The Old Man and the Sea )...

Overall the book is easy reading, exciting, and revealing to the reader. It holds the reader's interest to the point the reader wants to finish the entire book in one session. (It took me two...) A five star book by anybody's accounting.

                                          Book Description

The revised and updated third edition of this cutting-edge collection brings together classic readings and important new material on global environmental politics. In selections chosen for their authority and edited to preserve their integrity, Green Planet Blues examines international environmental controversies from a diversity of viewpoints and value orientations, ranging from elite political actors and intergovernmental organizations to social-movement activists and citizens around the world. Paradigms of sustainability, environmental security, and ecological justice are used to explain topics ranging from deforestation, toxic dumping, and watershed degradation to transboundary pollution and the global commons.

Green Planet Blues is an essential part of any course in environmental studies and international relations. This third edition features new material on globalization and the environment, social movement activism, the World Bank, the WTO, 'stakeholder' approaches to international environmental cooperation, and the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. Each section has been supplemented with critical thinking exercises; and a book-related web site provides links to a wide array of suggested readings and Internet resources.
