Book Description
Many suitors, driven by love, social-climbing or politics came close. See how and why she remained the Virgin Queen. "That a strong modern England was rendered possible mainly by the boldness, astuteness, and activity of Elizabeth at the critical turning-point of European history is generally admitted; but how masterly her policy was, and how entirely personal to herself, is even yet perhaps not fully understood."
Book Description
College basketball and its annual March Madness extravaganza have emerged over the last three decades as one of the most popular sporting phenomena in America. Perhaps no one personifies the excitement of this tournament better than Jim Valvano, whose heavily underdog North Carolina State Wolfpack achieved the pinnacle of success in college basketball in 1983 with an unlikely run through the NCAA tournament, culminating an incredible one-point victory over Houston's heavily favored Phi Slamma Jamma squad in the championship game.
While that Cinderella story was Valvano's only national championship, he quicky came to symbolize the exuberance and excellence of the exciting world of college basketball. Valvano transcended his sport, touching millions as he emerged as one of the most charismatic and, ultimately, courageous figures in American life who touched millions.
Diagnosed with bone cancer, he joined ESPN to comment on college basketball games. Later he received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at ESPN's first ESPY awards, where he announced that he was starting the V Foundation for cancer research. Shortly after receiving the award, he died at the age of forty-seven. In I Remember Jim Valvano, he is remembered by former players, coaches, a variety of other basketball experts, close associates, and many others as one of college basketball's great movers and shakers, a man with a heart as big as his popularity. Valvano's life is the classic story of courage and determination as borne out in his memorable line: "Don't give up. Don't ever give up."

Deeply disappointing.......2004-12-18
I was deeply disapointed by this book. I expected an uplifting, inspiring story, but instead it was the story of disfunctional relationships. The worst part was, the author did not seem to realize that his life and his families lives were disfunctional.
Most Wonderful.......2001-12-15
This book written by Mike Towle shows a very positive and very accurate look into the life of one of, if not, the best personality in college basketball history. We all miss Jimmy V very much and this book makes all the memories of Jimmy V so very special.
Most Wonderful.......2001-12-15
This book written by Jim' brother, Bob Valvano of ESPN, shows a very positive and very accurate look into the life of one of, if not, the best personality in college basketball history. We all miss Jimmy V very much and this book makes all the memories of Jimmy V so very special.

Book Description
The Stock Market Crash of October 1929 threw American society into complete turmoil. As millions of Americans became unemployed and the standard of living plummeted, a turn onto the road to recovery required a concerted effort of government and private industry resources.
Hollywood in Crisis is a detailed study of the American film industry in the 1930s. Specifically, Colin Schindler looks at Hollywood as an agent of Roosevelt's New Deal. From escapist musicals to gangster movies and Westerns, even to the radical films of the Warner studios, Schindler illustrates how the studios helped foster feelings of unity and patriotism.
Drawing from studio archives and interviews with such prominent figures as Henry Fonda, Frank Capra, and even the leader of the Hollywood Communist Party John Howard Lawson, Schindler's study redefines the way in which this segment of Hollywood's Golden years will be viewed.

Customer Reviews:
Phantom of the Opera is great !.......2007-10-02
This music is definitely for piano players who like easier arrangements. The songs can be played easily and include all the most popular songs in the musical. I really love mine.
THIS IS THE 'EASY PIANO' VERSION, NOT THE FULL SCORE.......2007-08-28
MUSICIANS TAKE NOTE!!! If you look at the TOP RIGHT CORNER of the image supplied with this item, you will see the little blue lettering that says, "EASY PIANO".
THIS IS THE ONLY INDICATION THAT THIS IS THE 'EASY PIANO' BOOK VERSION!!! SOMEWHERE IN THE DESCRIPTION IT SHOULD SAY THIS CLEARLY, BUT IT DOES NOT!
If you enjoy the music of "Phantom" and are a beginning pianist, you will get a great deal out of this book. However, if you have been playing for more than a few years, DO NOT ORDER THIS BOOK. It lacks the beauty and complexity of the music the way Andrew Lloyd Weber intended it, and is a poor replacement for my original battered "Broadway Score" book.
Didn't say Easy Piano..........2007-08-28
I ordered this book off of amazon since I've been wanting it for awhile and it was a lot cheaper than it is other places. I was very excited when it arrived only to be disappointed that it was the easy piano version. I skimmed over the pages and noticed that all the songs (from what I saw) were in the key of C major. While this is a very good book for beginners, I wanted the more advanced book. I may have missed it, but I usually check each item on the site very carefully before ordering, so I'm not sure how this happened. Just a warning for anyone who is not aware of this.
Easy piano book, not vocal seletions.......2007-05-12
The way this product is advertised in the description is a bit misleading. I was expecting the vocal selections and not an easy piano book.
Though this book might be great for a beginner, it is definitely not what I was expecting. Amazon might want to consider making this description and title a bit clearer to avoid future confusion.
VERY SIMPLE MUSIC.......2007-03-12
Be aware that is book is very, very simple music. It is not stated in the description of the book. If you are looking for anything past beginner level music, you will be disappointed.

Book Description
According to William Ury, it takes two sides to fight, but a third to stop. Distilling the lessons of two decades of experience in family struggles, labor strikes, and wars, he presents a bold new strategy for stopping fights. He also describes ten practical roles--as managers, teachers, parents, and citizens--that each of us can play every day to prevent destructive conflict.
Fighting isn't an inevitable part of human nature, Ury explains, drawing on his training as an anthropologist and his work among primitive tribes and modern corporations. We have a powerful alternative--The Third Side--which can transform our daily battles into creative conflict and cooperation at home, at work, and in the world.
Customer Reviews:
The Flow of Positivity.......2007-08-10
From his experience with working with children, married couples, business disputes, international conflict and more, William Ury demonstrates that an alternative to anger and violence is not only possible but much more productive and rewarding for all parties involved.
Although Ury specifies indentification and processes involved in all its various forms, you will not find much extrapilation here. Reading this provides a person that may be interested in dealing with conflict (whether at home, or at work, or even politically) a solid starting point and an enlightened positivity towards a more detail study on the subject.
Just a little more than 200 pages. The cover is treated to be fairly resistant to the elements so feel free to pass this along to friends or keep it on the coffee table for a quick reference to its diagrams.
If you have to develop a power point slide show on mediation, this is a big helper. Visit the website for more resources. [...]
Not so Provocative..........2006-04-14
The "third-side" idea of Ury's book was a neat one. I think that his idea of recognizing a third-side, may it be another person/people or a motivating force, and allowing it to assist in nonviolent conflict resolution is neat in that it helps us individually recognize the will to 'resolve'. I just don't know if that whole idea is actually that stimulating.
There is an over-simplification in his methodologies which proved to be a significant downfall of this book. Much of his examples were underdeveloped and it seems as if he molds the examples to fit his opinion, instead of his opinion fitting into the examples. The major dissappointment for me in the book was that he writes of other people and other cultures through the employment of racist techniques and makes it seem as though every conflict is simple enough that it can eventually just be "talked out".
The Third Side is the Best Side.......2004-11-17
An acclaimed negotiator and author of previous best sellers, "Getting to Yes" and "Getting Past No", William Ury first titled this book, "Getting to Peace". He later reverted to the original working title in order to de-emphasize the focus on global conflict, as he is a recognized world expert in peacekeeping negotiations. Instead he deals with conflict at all levels, from the family to the workplace and from the community to the world.
This is a 251-page paperback, written by an anthropologist who is concerned for his own human tribe, as he explores the reasons we are in conflict and sets forward a roadmap to resolution. In the first of three parts to the book, Ury describes the Third Side as the inside and outside factors to a dispute between two sides and explores the potential in recognizing its existence. Essentially, the Third Side is the neutral third party to such conflict.
In the fascinating second part, he examines the concept of fighting as an element of human nature from an archeological standpoint and points out that there was little organized violence in the first 99% of human history. As we moved from a society of hunters and gatherers to an agricultural and then an industrial society, the expandable pie became fixed and the potential for conflict increased. The recent technological change to a society based on knowledge has the potential for re-expanding the pie and allows for coexistence rather than coercion.
In the third segment, the author offers some solutions to prevent, resolve and contain conflict before it escalates to violent outcomes. He suggests that potential "third-siders" can transform conflict by assuming roles based on ten reasons for the escalation of disputes. He ends by challenging the reader to consider a number of steps towards mobilizing the third side.
As with the other books he has co-authored, William Ury has presented some interesting ideas in a thoroughly readable format. In particular, his use of stories to illustrate these concepts is marvelous. They range from the basic fights between the Bushmen of Africa to the politically charged wars between nations in the Middle East. This is a provocative book and one that is extremely pertinent in today's contentious society.
Simply the best book on mediation there is.......2004-10-19
This is *the* definitive book on conflict management by the uber-guru of negotiation and mediation. Ury has mediated in the Middle East, the Balkans, N. Ireland and many other places.
Fighting is natural and human, and is the ultimate approach. But it is destructive and win-lose at best. Revenge and feuding turns it into lose-lose. Ury points out how the win-lose of the agrarian society is giving way to both-win or both-lose of the knowledge society as hierarchical control is being fractured by knowledge networks.
The 'third side' is the person on the sidelines in a conflict who wants to help. Third-siders can be neighbors, neutrals, bystanders, family, friends. Event the warring parties themselves can take the third side. This book describe ten roles that this person can take.
Their goal is always to prevent conflict before it happens. Even the presence of a third person will calm conflict, but doing nothing does not optimize the help they can give.
Three strategies (and roles within each) are offered to manage increasing levels of conflict:
* Prevent (Provider, Teacher, Bridge-builder)
* Resolve (Mediator, Arbiter, Equalizer, Healer)
* Contain (Witness, Referee, Peacekeeper)
They are:
1. Provider: When there is conflict is often over scarce resources the Provider finds ways for both sides to get what they need, even deep needs such as love, safety and esteem. They can also provide knowledge to enable intelligent decisions.
2. Teacher: People often fight because they know of no other way to resolve their differences. The Teacher shows them how to handle conflict without resorting to violence and arms.
3. Bridge-builder: People in conflict often become separated by deep divides which lead to ignorant stereotyping, etc. The Bridge-builder builds ways across the dividing chasm, for example by building trust, showing how the others are human too.
4. Mediator: Where there are conflicting interests, the Mediator tries to bring them to the table. If this fails, they use shuttle diplomacy, going back and forth. Sometimes a higher authority may be able to coerce them to the table.
5. Arbiter: When there are disputed rights or when mediation fails, the Arbiter acts a judge and selects a final solution, to which both parties must agree to be bound.
6. Equalizer: Where there is unequal power, the powerful may not seek help but the powerless deserve it. Their position of greater power may cause the powerful to rethink and bring them to the table.
7. Healer: Injured relationships can fester if left alone. The Healer seeks to calm emotion and soothe hurt, for example by listening and acknowledging within a climate of healing.
8. Witness: When nobody pays attention, atrocities may be committed. The Witness needs only see and tell the truth. Just by their presence, they may also dissuade the wrong-doer.
9. Referee: When people resort to conflict without rules, people get really hurt. When you cannot stop them fighting, the Referee at least sets and polices the rules.
10. Peacekeeper: Where people are completely vulnerable, they are open to easy attack. The Peacekeeper provides safety for the victims, interpose themselves between the warring parties and enforcing the peace.
These ten roles can be played in combination, even with the same person playing more than one role.
Overall, this is a wonderful and empowering must-have book, not just for mediators but anyone who encounters or stands at any time between warring people.
Does not show you how.......2001-11-06
This book just say that you should settle your disputes with methods such as mediation and negitiation but teach not tell you how you can do it.
A disappointment.

Bleak Prospects.......2004-08-25
War and the New Disorder in the 21st Century by Jeremy Black (Continuum International Publishing Group) Jeremy black's book prophetically explores the realities of War in a globalized world where growing prosperity can increase the likelihood of conflict and American power is likely to be increasingly challenged.
Black conducts his argument in terms of New World Disorder, specifically the failure
of Western models of globalization to engage support. There is extensive discussion of military structures in the West, as they are `reconfigured' to take account of new political realities. Black considers America an `eccentric' military power and developments in the USA should not be treated as a paradigm for those elsewhere. Instead, growing lawlessness across much of the world will be the main factor for consideration, specifically in the failure to maintain order and control in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
Book Description
This is a classic advanced undergraduate/graduate text in research methods which requires statistics as a prerequisite. The first half of the text concentrates on research methods and the second half introduces students to advanced statistical procedures.
Customer Reviews:
The best of the best.......2007-09-07
This Rosenthal & Rosnow book is destined to be a classic (the 2nd ed. already is). Rarely will you encounter this level of philosophical breadth, statistical depth, and historical perspective so well unified in a single text in any field. And all of it is as clear as a glass of gin in the sun. I keep mine close by my desk and refer to it often.
The next generation of behavioral science students will be lucky to start with this one and have it as a lifelong reference.
E. K. Foster, PhD
Clear and Comprehensive.......2006-11-20
This book is a must-have for those in the behavioral sciences. We used it as a textbook in my psychology MA course, and even years later my classmates and I keep it within arm's reach on our bookshelves and refer to it as "Bob's red book".
Don't waste your money on this.......2004-01-03
My background in statistics was not very helpful to understand this awfully soporific, pedantic book : it inflicts on you hundreds of references pages after pages. Not a single chapter is ended with exercises. To my misfortune I had it as a mandatory textbook in an Information System course at NJIT -- imposed by an unscrupulous "distinguished professor", whose background is sociology, as a favor to the authors, apparently.
Excellent and comprehensive text.......2001-11-25
This is one of the most comprehensive and clearly written textbooks for graduate level behavior science methods I have come across. I learned from this book myself and, now as a professor, I will be using it in my graduate class.
The Grand Daddy of Methods Books.......2000-01-06
This is the one that you'll keep after the class is over. You'll come across some odd methodological issue 5 years after you buy the book and it'll be in there, explained perfectly. The section on interpretation of interactions is particularly great. You can't learn more about power and meta-analysis more efficiently than by reading the relevant chapters in here. The ethics chapter is more entertaining than anything like it in any other text. I've been teaching from this book for 9 years and still get students calling saying thanks for making them buy it.

The Weather Makers : How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth
ASIN: 1567512844 |
Book Description
In Arctic Melting, top scientists describe the alarming impacts of glaciers receding half a mile per year, pack ice hundreds of miles farther from the Arctic coast, permafrost melting and villages crumbling into the rising seas. As author Chad Kister reveals, even one of Alaska's most notorious antienvironmental senators, Ted Stevens, has declared that global warming is having massive impacts.
Author of Arctic Quest: Odyssey Through a Threatened Wilderness,
Chad Kister is a public speaker and environmental activist in southeast Ohio. Kister has been touring the U.S., speaking about the need to protect the Arctic Refuge.
Customer Reviews:
Arctic Melting is real disaster in progress.......2006-11-11
This little book shares amazing onsite details only the Alaskans & intent visitors know first hand. It has some dramatic photos of arctic devastation. I saw Chad's beautiful slide show in Eugene Oct. 06 explaining many eco-critical issues there detailed in this book. He visited in `90s & '04-5 studying the ecology, taking pictures & talking over the crisis to learn the controversy & promote conservation. He tells of seeing the shocking differences of melting from warmer & shorter winters. Chad documents the Arctic zone suffering more varied ecospasms than any large bioregion on earth.
He is active campaigner to save the wilderness & stop global warming for 20 years. The ragging debates over development in Alaska are famous over oil extraction pipelines, fishing, native culture & logging old growth forests. Chad is working for years to protect those wilderness areas. His photos of the worst arctic ecospasms of sinking tundra lands with huge gapping holes & cracks. Big endangered animals: bear, caribou, walrus, seals, retreating glaciers & disappearing polar ice-cap. Causing the rising tides washing away shorelines, slowly invading & drowning shoreline villages! Some are relocating because their traditional lands are vanishing into rising seas. The native Eskimo traditional lives & values are stressed & even useless when their homes & food supplies are disappearing now, seems multi-extinction is rising fast.
The melting of vast tundra permafrost hosting vast herds of wild animals & millions of acres of trees are now dying from lost root systems, overheating, falling over, bark beetles eating them & even forest fires. All species are feeling the heat, more insects & less plankton in seawaters for fish to eat & grow. More nutrients in tundra melt-waters feeding stream aquaculture, while sea creatures are dying off. So much polar ice-caps has melting in last decade polar bears, walruses & seal are threatened & dying from lack of food. Pestilence invades with warming seasons.
The arctic is warming so the plants are animals are changing, animals moving north into cooler ecozones they're adapted to. Will forests migrate north also?
Chad zooms out to econo-political issues from US DOD Military report of "Climate crisis more dangerous than terrorism" to scientist supporting stopping global warming against the US gov resisting it even this year. Chad continues to touring, learning & promoting protecting of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge & other endangered bioregions. He's reporting on vast global & local trends, like 160 species of birds that migrate to Arctic from all US states & 6 Continents. Is a true adventurer, reporter & advocate for our respecting natural integrity of Arctic Ecosystems & how we're impacting them directly there & with heating up earth wherever we over-consume, pollute & pay taxes supporting more development. This is the best little `screaming tales' book from the arctic wilderness we need to learn NOW.
Chad also wrote Arctic Quest: Odyssey Through a Threatened Wilderness Area
Arctic Melting is full of sources, very timely facts.......2006-05-04
Arctic Melting is full of sources and direct quotes from scientists. It shows the full range of impacts of climate change, from the melting pack ice and that impact on polar bears, the Inuit people, walrus, seal, Arctic Cod, Salmon, Arctic Char; native American village sea coasts crumbling into the sea, the permafrost melting, forests dying from climate change-caused disease and burning by the millions of acres, forests marching north, the impacts on caribou, snow fall and the Gwich'in people; a chapter how the Pentagon found climate change is a much more serious threat than terrorism and much more. It also shows the global impacts, about how melting glaciers are rising sea levels and shutting down oceanic currents, and the horrific impacts that this will likely cause.
Rather than leaving it at the horrific problem, Arctic Melting has a series of solution chapters about how we can meet all of our energy needs with efficiency, solar and wind. It also has a 20 page update on the very latest about the campaign to protect the Arctic National wildlife Refuge from oil development
Something missing...Oh yeah...Sources!.......2006-04-07
While the topics covered and material discussed in this little handy book are worth reading, the depth of knowledge in terms of science and the documentation of other sources is rather lacking. Kister uses other people's quotes as a crutch and the times he does use his own voice seem to fall short. The chapter on feedback systems especially. I'd hope a future edition will spell check his work, and also get the definition of albedo correct...it's reflectivity potential, not the amount of sunlight absorbed. And this is not known as the "albeido effect" either, it's just a way of looking at how much radiation from the sun is reflected rather than absorbed. For folks just trying to see the Alaskan side of the global warming issue, go for it. For someone looking for a more technical read...check out Weather Cycles by William James Burroughs
