Nice Moon Landing Book for the 10-12 Year Old Crowd.......2002-04-20
Jim Irwin was the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 15 mission to the moon and became the eight man to walk on the moon. Prior to this book, he had written two others books (To Rule the Night and More than Earthlings) about his adventures in space; however unlike this book, these books were geared for the adult audience.
In this book, the author, writing in the first person, describes his life from slightly before the time he applied to be an astronaut, his selection as an astronaut, his training and his eventual trip to and from the moon. There was a fair amount of material dedicated to the training needed to be an astronaut and moon walker, more than I've seen in the usual astronaut biographies. The book also includes many photographs in both color and black and white, to help the reader understand Jim Irwin's life and times at NASA.

'FRANK WORRALL'S record of Wayne Rooney's first season at Old Trafford is a thoughtful, well-written account. The Scouser seems to have been around forever but was just 18 when he made his mark for England at Euro 2004, scoring four goals before injury against Portugal brought an end to his (and England's tournament), but Rooneymania was off and running. Worrall applies some perspective, expressing the view that well though Rooney had played, he probably wasn't even the best player at Euro 2004. But his life changed forever. The story is played out against the backdrop of Malcolm Glazer's takeover of Manchester United, but that is of little concern to the player. After deciding to leave his beloved Everton, he and girlfriend Coleen headed up the East Lancs Road for Old Trafford, with Sir Alex Ferguson blowing £27m on the young maestro. Rooney loves the big occasion and his United debut came in a Champions League match against Fenerbahce. United won 6-2, Rooney scored a hat-trick. Any doubts about whether Ferguson had done the right thing were dispelled in an instant. He produced the goods again when United brought Arsenal's unbeaten run to an end. The Gunners came to Old Trafford looking for a 50th game without defeat, but Rooney played out of his skin as United won 2-0. As the season unfolded, a pattern emerged. Rooney was seldom able to put two storming games together. But, as we are reminded, he was returning from injury and still learning his craft. On top of that, many of his teammates were struggling with form and fitness. The author is a dyed-in-the-red-wool United fan, so it is interesting to note that he takes issue with some of Rooney's excesses on the field, expressing astonishment that Ferguson refused to condemn the player when he should have been sent off against Bolton last season. Worrall also defends Coleen's spending habits - her shopping sprees became front-page news after the move to Manchester - as the actions of a girl who, for the first time in her life, has access to serious money. If she and Wayne were happy, whose business was it anyway? Simply Red reminds us of how far Rooney has already come. This story will run and run.

Race in the Schoolyard adds a new dimension to the literature on race and schooling. It examines how race is understood, produced, reproduced and contested by students, teachers and parents. It provides rich description and profound analysis of the dynamics of race in elementary schools. Its explanations of how race is constructed and dealt with at schools incorporates the examination of micro processes such as teacher practices and macro processes such as residential segregation. It makes a strong statement about how racial categorization is imbued in everyday life at school and even in the most minute or "insignificant" details of school. The book shows how racial categorization leads to behavior toward others that influence their educational opportunities.
Amanda Lewis provides new insights into how race gets constructed by schools. She examines how school as an institution produces racial meanings, in formal and informal ways, that have lasting consequences for students, especially students of color.
Amanda Lewis'work--which was quoted in the University of Michigan affirmative action case--will surely raise controversy and fuel substantial debates. She wrestles with the relative roles of culture and merit in the book. She uses Bourdieu to understand cultural gaps between minority students and the school. She argues that such gaps put minority students at a disadvantage as they are judged, not in terms of "ability or potential," but by "white middle class styles of interaction." In other words, while acknowledging cultural differences, she points out that these differences are not treated neutrally; rather, those of white students tend to be rewarded, and those of students of color are more often treated as illegitimate.
Amanda Lewis' studies of schools is also part of the larger theoretical project of understanding race relations in America. She argues, in the manner of Bobo, Feagin, and Bonilla-Silva, that racism in America has not disappeared but has assumed new, more subtle forms.
Extraordinary book on race and contemporary schooling.......2003-06-24
This book is truly amazing. It deals with a controversial topic in a careful but thought-provoking manner. Having taught in urban and suburban schools for twenty years I can relate to many of the stories that she tells about the inability of teachers, school administrators, and parents to deal effectively with the elephant in the room, race. As she points out in her conclusion we as teachers and Americans cannot "merely close our eyes and try by sheer force of imagination to will ourselves into a color-blind world." In this very readable and well-written book the author reminds us that as teachers we owe it to our students (not just our black and hispanic students) to help them understand how race matters. It is only through direct and honest dialogue that our students will be better prepared to make sure race matters less in the future.

This book is so vital to read as Westerners who may not know about the persecutions of the Russian Church under the communist. What makes this books stand alone is the life of Fr. Arseny of Blessed Memory. His struggles with criminals, political prisoners, brutal guards, and trying to simply stay alive while fulfilling his sentence in one of the soviet, "special camps," gives you a look at how one man's humanity and compassion can have such a deep impact on so many others. Fr. Areny's life stands among many of the as yet un-cannonized saints that suffered for the Orthodox Faith. The spiritual depth and the description of some of Gods mysteries pulls back the veil of this world for the reader so they can see the depths of Gods love in his saints. You will love this book even if you are not Orthodox.

Forgetting the set backs of the American Revolutionary War, in 1793 the Royal Navy embarked on an almost unprecedented era of victories at sea, producing a considerable appetite for pictures of every incident, great or small. A thriving trade in prints and engravings grew up, supplemented by watercolors and oils by celebrated artists. Besides these ‘public’ works, many officers--and indeed members of the lower deck--kept personal journals and sketchbooks, illustrated with surprisingly accomplished drawings and watercolors, often depicting the everyday aspects of wartime life at sea that were ignored in the more celebratory artistic media. These sources form a rich vein that have been barely touched in previous publications, but which this book uses to full effect. Despite numerous defeats, the French navy continued to dispute command of the sea in the period 1793-1797, and the early years of the war abound with fleet engagements, including dramatic victories against the Spanish at St. Vincent and the Dutch at Camperdown, between which the navy endured the shocking events of the Great Mutiny, potentially the most dangerous moment of the whole war.

Wish there was some color.......2007-07-14
Excellent book, with a good blend of art and history. Each picture is explained in text with associated historical and artistic caveats. For the price I guess you couldn't expect color pictures though I think a few would add to the quality of the book and perhaps add to the cost. With color it would have been 5 stars and a bargan. Mr. Gardiner's books have never disappointed me, and I have a few.
A must have book for Naval historians.......2003-12-04
An excellent Naval History. Well written easy reading. A great array of period pictures, blueprints, and sketches. Concisely organized and well presented. What I enjoyed most about this book was that it not only covers the chronology and naval actions of the period, it also discusses life at sea and how the fleets and ships operated. Particularly interesting are the essays on The ship of the line, 36 and 28 gun frigates and smaller craft with line drawings and pictures of the class of vessel. An excellent book for Naval Historians, ship modellers, and Naval war gamers.
