The Best Diana Book Ever!!!.......1999-08-24
This is the best book on Diana ever written. There are a lot of great "picture books", but this tells great details about her life(as we all thought it was)If my house was on fire, and I could only grab one of my MANY Diana books, this would be it.7,000 stars, five does not do it justice!!
Very Pleased with this Book.......1998-11-04
This book has pictures that I've not seen elsewhere. It also has interesting descriptions of Diana's home, indepth information about her working day, and insights on her personality.
The most pleasing thing about this book is that it is unbiased. I am also glad that it is straight-forward with no mud-slinging and no sensationalism. Unlike Princess Diana books coming into bookstores in the near future, this book does not cheapen her memory.
Same Old Thing, But Less Of It.......1998-10-25
This was going to be the only book I was going to buy after Diana's death, since I have been collecting books, etc. written about her since 1981. I bought it, read it, and found it to be so incredibly out-dated and full of lies (pre-Andrew Morton bulemia confession, etc.) that I returned it to the store to get my money back.
Book Description
When Princess Diana died in August 1997, the nation mourned for a woman they felt they had come to know intimately; having witnessed the quiet, blushing Lady Diana Spencer transform into an elegant, stylish ambassador who tirelessly campaigned for the causes in which she believed. With the announcement of her untimely death came an unprecedented wave of collective grieving. In this revealing book, royal expert Judy Wade uncovers the woman behind the public's princess, speaking to some of Diana's closest friends and confidantes to reveal the truth about her. They journey inside her Kensington Palace apartment and describe how she cleaned her own bath and nagged her sons to improve their manners, just like any other mom. They reveal her secret plan to marry a man who shared her desire to help the sick and suffering, her violent row with Dodi Fayed just before they died, and the real reason she went on a last mission to Australia. Diana's manipulation of the media following her expulsion from the royal family is also examined, as well as the police investigation into her death, and the impact that her death had on the monarchy. This is a fascinating look at a woman who was so many things to so many different people.

Don't read for surfing interest-read to learn about a junkie.......1999-08-18
Hakman represents that great human irony where an extremely talented individual trashes everything in his life and yet, still becomes a multi-millionaire. This is about a man whose sole mantra for life is ME, ME, ME. Even this book represents that unextinguishable need to gratify himself. Except for his lame one-line apology in the very beginning, there is no apparent remorse for all the damage he did to his friends, lovers, family and all those who looked upon him as a role-model. When he was doing his speedballs, he had no thoughts whatsoever for the younger surfing crowd, people like Mark MacMillan who OD'd and died on the Big Island, that revered "Mr. Sunset" and emulated him to the the point of self-destruction. Don't read this book as a "surfing book" but as an edification to a junkie.
Life is like a set of waves - troughs & peaks.......1998-08-24
You're 18 and bullet-proof. That's how life seems. This was a great example of how fame can destroy the "indestructable". It is also a great example of how love and a person's willingness to look past another's faults can turn a person's life around. The other aspects of the book, that is the surfing, was great as well. His natural ability in the surf is legendary amongst the 60's baby boom surf-set. How it all could have been wasted had he not had the support of those around him. Just like the waves he rode at Sunset, Jeff Hakman had high peaks and huge troughs. An excellent all-round book.
this book is one of the most amazing sories ever written!.......1998-08-22
this book is beyond good. anyone who surfs or has been into surfing must read this. the story of hakman is not only strikingly touching but it also examines the surf culture maturity throughout the 60's-80's. it also gives an amazing prespective on drug use in the same time and hakman's amazing bout to overcome heroin addiction. this is a definite must for any soul surfer!
Book Description
"L euthold has captured an understanding of Native life that is rarely presented to the outside world. . . . His book is a real 'eye-opener' for those who love but don't really understand artistic creativity. It is an equally significant introduction to Native American filmmaking and to Indian art in general." --Tom Holm, Professor of American Indian Studies, University of Arizona What happens when a Native or indigenous person turns a video camera on his or her own culture? Are the resulting images different from what a Westernized filmmaker would create, and, if so, in what ways? How does the use of a non-Native art-making medium, specifically video or film, affect the aesthetics of the Native culture? These are some of the questions that underlie this rich study of Native American aesthetics, art, media, and identity. Steven Leuthold opens with a theoretically informed discussion of the core concepts of aesthetics and indigenous culture and then turns to detailed examination of the work of American Indian documentary filmmakers, including George Burdeau and Victor Masayesva, Jr. He shows how Native filmmaking incorporates traditional concepts such as the connection to place, to the sacred, and to the cycles of nature. While these concepts now find expression through Westernized media, they also maintain continuity with earlier aesthetic productions. In this way, Native filmmaking serves to create and preserve a sense of identity for indigenous people.
Book Description
Kate Braverman grew up in Los Angeles in the late 1950s at the time when glitz was just beginning to be manufactured. Her Los Angeles was made up of stucco tenements, welfare, and the marginalized. It wasn’t a destination city, it was the end of the line.
Frantic Transmissions to and from Los Angeles chronicles the trajectory of Braverman’s Left Coast generation with a voice of singular power. She was an antiwar activist in Berkeley, a punk-rock poet on Sunset Strip, a single mother in the East L.A. barrio, and a woman in recovery at AA meetings in Beverly Hills. By 1990 she was married and settled into a life of writing and teaching. In her forties, Braverman did the unthinkable and moved from Beverly Hills to New York’s Allegheny Mountains to a 150-year-old farmhouse.
In wide-ranging transmissions, Braverman deftly contrasts the social histories of Los Angeles with her new, timeless rural community; describes the effects of the changing seasons on her Californian, sun-drenched soul; and marvels at how a remote farmhouse can offer surprising consolations.
Library Journal calls Braverman a “literary genius”; Rolling Stone describes her as having the “power and intensity you don’t see much outside of rock and roll.” Frantic Transmissions to and from Los Angeles offers an eccentric and insightful view of social and individual transformation.

Braverman's New World.......2006-01-17
I lucked out two months back and acquired an uncorrected proof of "Frantic Transmissions to and From Los Angeles", and even though I was fairly familiar with her novels (especially the dreamy and harshly poetic re-imagination of Frida Kahlo in "Incantations of Frida K"), this nominal memoir of the place knocked me out, tied me up and left me pained and pleasured in ways only the best writing can manage. As with the best writing by Don DeLillo, she does a potently condensed job of assessing, summarizing and characterizing the shapeless sprawl that constitutes the City of Angels. Addressing herself often times in collective pronouns such as "you" and "we", she taps into what might be the dry , metaphysical desolation that inhabits the
isolated communities, the neighborhoods abutting train tracks and the eroded processing plants, whole square miles of battlefield playgrounds and strip malls.
Her writing is electric, brilliant, an ongoing metaphorical chain that unfolds like a rich, spiraling improvisations. Like DeLillo, and especially Norman Mailer in his glorious accounting of the architectural grandness and contradictions of odd American urban centers in "Miami and the Siege of Chicago", Braverman compares and contrasts and confronts the difficulty of defining an identity as an artist and person with a purpose within the the crushing isolation and rootlessness that is Los Angeles' sadly exclusive domain.
Part essay, memoir, gilded satire and ecstatic tone poem, "Frantic Transmissions to and from Los Angles" is the most riveting non-fiction I've read in years, and it is an unqualified joy for the lover of masterful prose writing.

Still number one in International Management.......2007-07-06
This book was published in 2004. I have used it for the past three years in a college course with exactly the same title. It covers the cultural differences of managerial operations in multinational enterprises. The PowerPoint slide is useful for lectures. Many in-class exercises were done using articles from: BusinessWeek, Crains NY Business, Economist (online), Financial Times (online), Forbes and Fortune magazines.
The book will be better if more real-world examples were given on CEO of Ikea, Mittal Steel or News Corporation. Students did the reseach on the CEOs of these firms and reported their final projects. Final projects were done individually or in a group. Students generally like the book except the cost. But the book is cheaper than most of the other international management titles. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Great book describing culture.......2000-09-15
Excellent Book. I was impressed on how the author was able to showthe various difficulties that are faced and how one can go about managing them. Real scenarios helped a lot in understanding the difficulties better in International relations.

Anne Frank Life in Hiding From July 1942 until August 1944, a young girl named Anne Frank kept a diary. Keeping a diary isn't unusual. Lots of girls do. But Anne's diary was unique. It chronicled the two years she and her family spent hiding from the Germans who were determined to annihilate all the Jews in Europe. In this sensitive and thoughtful introduction to the Holocaust and to the life of one of its best known victims, acclaimed author Johanna Hurwitz deftly evokes the background of World War II while capturing the unforgettable spirit and tragedy of Anne's life. Anne Frank Life in Hiding.......2005-12-02
This book is magical, because it shows you and makes you feel like you are the scene. It made me think how hard it would be to live like a young Jewish girl called Anne Frank living a life with guns being shot and having to move so much.
I can not imagine living like Anne that can only go to shops that have the Jewish signs, and not much of the stores had them. Anne was very brave to put up with this stuff every day. She is unbelievable, she was a great person. You should read this book because it can give you information and show how lucky we are that we have freedom to go anywhere we want to go.
I had a lot of fun reading this book and it showed me how lucky I am to be here in the United States. This book also taught me how cruel Hitler was to the Jewish and other people.
Anne frank.......2005-02-07
This book is filled with the ups and downs of Anne Frank, how she handles her problems, how life was being Jewish and happy memories of her life. It tells how Anne was a very energetic girl who had fun with friends and was very social. However, it also describes how hard life was for her, being Jewish, going into hiding and being captured and being transported to different concentration camps. Anne was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt Germany. During her time in hiding she kept all her secret thoughts in a diary that her mother and father (Edith and Otto Frank) gave to her the day she turned 13(June 12, 1942). Anne had a very strong bond with her father and sister (Margot) but not as strong with her mother but she still loved her dearly. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested about Anne Frank.
Anne Frank Life in Hidding.......2004-02-28
The summary on this book is this is a book about Anne Frank. It tells about her life and her diary. Also it tells about her troubles and her problems. In this book, people are put into concentration camps and poision gas room by the Nazis. If you don't know who the Nazis are, they are a type of group that dosen't like Jews.
Anne was born in 1856.Anne was very adventrous. She liked to write, so at the age of 13, her mom and dad bought her a diary. Anne was very talkative. Sha always got into trouble.
Some problems that she faced is hidding. She was hidding from the Nazis. She was hidding with another family and a dentist. Also another problem she faced is physical changes.
Some ways she solved her problems is by writting in her diary. In her diary she would write about things that were going on in her life. Another way she solved her problem is by hidding. This is a problem solver because if she didn't she would be in a concentration camp.
another breath taking book for such an intimate topic.......2000-06-23
This is another book about Anne Frank that I get the chance to read. Although there are many biographies about this wonderful human being, this book is the closest one that can answer the questions that all Anne Frank fan has. I did for many years just read the Diary over and over but I wanted more! This book is definetly more! It tells you more about the relationship she had with her family and the rest of the people in hiding. This is a girl who could hardly see the light coming from her window and the only green thing that she could think about was a huge chestnut outside the Annex. This book describes this little things that she cherished and that she no longer had....her freedom. She didn't either had freedom of speach inside the Annex due to the critics about her attitude. This book develops more information about why Anne acted like she did and why she had an open opinion about everything. It also gives you a bigger idea of why she didn't like her mother and develops more about her childhood around her family and her friends. I hope all readers that enjoy the Anne Frank writings will enjoy this description about her persona. Is a total different thing to read her diary knowing more about her life and early aspirations. ENJOY!
Customer Reviews:
A singularly credible account........2007-06-01
2007 sees the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War of 1982. In the UK at least, it seems as though everyone and each of our television channels is reliving that war in one way or another. Some authors and commentators are simply climbing onto the bandwagon with material which, to put it simply, is suspect. NOT SO!, with this book.
Michael Clapp was "Commodore Amphibious Warfare" during the Falklands War and co-author Ewen Southby-Tailyour was a serving Royal Marine Officer during that same conflict and whose knowledge of the waters of the Falklands was so invaluable before during and even after the landings. It was Southby-Tailyour who warned the officer in charge (Not!, the Commanding Officer I hasten to add) of the party of Welsh Guardsmen on board the "Sir Galahad" to get ashore before they were attacked and offered assistance to this end. That officer, incidentally, refused the request and the Sir Galahad was later attacked with great loss of life.
Those, then, are the credentials of the two men who have collaborated in the writing of this book. It is an important historic document.
The Captain of any ship is "Master" of that ship. He also commands all the ship's boats and is ultimately responsible for ensuring the safe embarkation and disembarkation of all on board. From ships lifeboats (even life-rafts) to assault craft, considerable training and expertise is required in getting passengers safely away and safely ashore. Never more so than when under fire from a belligerent enemy.
In early 1982, a hastily assembled Royal Navy Task Force was steaming towards the Falkland Islands which had been invaded by a foreign force. The British troops on board the various ships were tried and tested veterans of Northern Ireland but had no experience of what was to come. Worse still, apart from the Commandos, most had little or not experience in going to war by sea.
The responsibility for putting them safely ashore rested with their Royal Navy `chauffeurs' and that responsibility came down to Michael Clapp. In this book he reveals - with considerable honesty, the full story of the events that led to the resultant victory on land. In so doing he had to adopt old, forgotten methods in a bid to find common ground for all concerned. It upset some - but then nobody likes change foisted upon them, especially senior officers. Point is, it worked!
The reasons why San Carlos Water was chosen is fully explained and, with hindsight, is probably the one single factor - more than any other, that led to the eventual victory.
I can identify with a no-nonsense, straight-talking officer who cares not what feathers he may ruffle when given an important task. It says much for his style and the decisions he took that nobody - senior officer or below, has ever challenged his honesty or the importance of this book.
For those with an interest in the Falklands war of 1982, this is essential reading.
NM
(Retired British army major)
It takes Logistics to conduct the amphibious operations.......2002-04-25
1. I had read this book about two years ago and liked it great deal....Falkland war was a unique war in many respects. It was a war fought on doorsteps of adversary by a nation thousands of miles away. To regain a piece of land (or should I say an island) captured by not so weak enemy, whose logistics train was much much shorter was per-se a military operation, but in true sense it was first of all a major logistics exercise to make that military might reach that far from UK and then make that military might fight the battle. Operations actually were a much smaller part of the whole game.
2. Commodore Michael Clapp, was Commander of Amphibious Task Force of Royal Navy. He was the man at the most happening part of the war. It was very easy for him to push all the shortcomings and problems under the carpet and brag about the successes, which were by no means small. The virtues of the Victor are generally remembered and the vices forgotten. One must however remember that the ones who do not learn from history (past lessons) soon themselves become history. Commodore Clapp has been forthright in his approach and has very systematically brought out the chaos and problems of such operations. In the fog of war confusion and chaos would reign, but a side that minimises it, generally fares better.
3. He has highlighted as to how the then strategic perspective of UK had resulted into cutting of forces. How a maritime nation had become land centric and was reducing its naval forces. In such circumstances, it received a jolt at Falklands, which was contrary to the perception prevailing at that time. This jolt forced an ill prepared nation to gather itself and brace up for war. What was achieved in such a short span was commendable, but Cmde Clapp has done an essential service by putting the preparations and the war in correct perspective. Highlighting the plus and the minus dispassionately. Britain won the war, but few set backs due to logistics problems would have turned the tables. When at war one must fight whole-heartedly, but an analysis in retrospect is always very important to learn from them and not to repeat the same mistakes next time. Cmde Clapp deserves praise for doing that essential task, though it might have been unpleasant to do so.
4. A must read for those having interest in maritime affairs in general and in amphibious operations in particular.
Battle from the top.......2000-08-14
I found the book "Amphibious Assault falklands" very interesting. It gives us the perspective of one of the leaders of the campain, and shows us all the considerations and planning before the assult. Together with the book "No picninc" I think this in one of the most informative books about the war, if you want to know the war from the top.
Buried in logistics -- where's the war?.......1999-01-11
If you are writing about the Falklands War, this would be an important source book for details on some aspects. But if you want to know about the war, pick another book. Michael Clapp was Commodore (permanent rank was Captain) of the amphibious assault force, the naval officer in overall command of getting the marines a soldiers ashore along with their supplies. His book, written with a colleague, is a numbing and intensive description of logistical matters liberally strewn with incomprehensible acronyms. Much muted complaining about bad communications and fuzzy organization. It's a wonder the Argentines lost! Events outside his immediate concern get little notice. Sinking of the Belgrano and its consequences merits a mere dismissal as left wing whining. There is no sense of humanity here at all. Still, one has to give credit for the enormous logistical task successfully completed at such a distance from home base. But it's easy to put down.
Book Description
All adult speakers in Western cultures have life stories argues Charlotte Linde, and the ways in which these life stories are formed and exchanged with others have a powerful effect on all of us. Life stories express our sense of self, who we are and how we got that way. According to Linde, we also use these stories to show that our lives can be understood as coherent, and to assert or negotiate group membership. These life stories take part in the highest level of social constructions, since they are built on cultural assumptions about what is expected in a life, what the norms for a successful life are, and what common or special belief systems are necessary to establish coherence. The life story, illuminated by this engrossing study, is a form of everyday discourse which has not previously been precisely defined or studied. It is an oral, discontinuous unit, consisting of stories which are retold in a variety of forms over a long period of time, and which may be revised and changed as the speaker comes to drop old meanings and add new ones to parts of the life story. The life story is a particularly rich and important area for study, because it represents a crossroads of linguistic structure and social practice. Linde's analysis is of importance to linguistics, as well as having broader implications for anthropology, psychology, and sociology.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read.......2000-04-09
It is rare to find a ground-breaking scholarly book written so gracefully while covering such a wide range of scholarly literatures. In less than 200 pages Linde brings down a framework for the understanding of the personal life story which is invaluable for psychologists, anthropologists, linguistis and indeed anyone who wishes to understand the process of the creation of the self.
Life Stories The Creation Of a Good Sleeping Device.......2000-04-04
This book is obviously not for the average reader. I read it for a psychological anthropology book review and found myself regretting every moment of it. First of all, Linde tries to give to many examples and restates the same thing over and over. When I finished chapter 8 and read the conclusion which was four pages I was a little upset. The whole book was a waste of time, by just reading the conclusion the few points that were made are clearly stated there without the non-sense and all the repetition. INSOMNIACS this is a must buy for you it put me to sleep about 7-8 times. Besides that avoid this book if at all possible. You can thank me for the sacrafice I made for you.

Excellent Breadth.......2007-09-26
This book was assigned reading for a college class on Sustainable Development. I'd already had some exposure to the philosophies & theories presented. It seems to be a good collection representing a wide range of ideas; a great piece for my reference shelf. In other words: a keeper!
a splendid collection of leading eco thinkers and writers...........2005-07-31
....ably assembled and edited by Michael E. Zimmerman. This anthology spans the spectrum from animal rights to environmental protection to deep ecology, and by doing so provides a superb introduction to environmental studies as well as important supplementary reading reaching forward into the present.
An Excellent Introduction to Environmental Philosophy.......2002-07-06
Regardless of whether you are interested in deep ecology, animal rights, envirnmental ethics,eco-feminism or political ecology, this excellently edited edition will have something of interest for you. Those who are looking for a more scientific approach to examing our relationship with nature, as oppossed to the more philosophical writings of Muir, Thoreau and Abbey, this book will be especially appreciated.
Published primarily for use in environmetal philosophy/science courses at the university level, this book is very useful in providing a well researched, diversen sampling from some of the most important theorists in the field. Essays by J. Baird Calicott, Tom Regan, author of the revolutionary work "The Case Animal Rights", Holmes Rolston III, author of the seminal text "Environmetal Ethics", the Norweigan philosopher Arne Naess and , the so-called founder of the deep Ecology movement, Aldo Leopold, author of the famous "Sand County Almanac", as well as works by other important scholars such as George Sessions, Warick Fox, the famous eco-feminist historian Carolyn Merchant, John Clark and Gary Snyder along with many others.
Although the essays contianed in this text can be challenging at times, in the end the payoff definitely makes it worth the effort. This difficulty is, at least, in part due to the fact that what this book requires is a new way of examining our relationship with nature and a willingness to examine problems from a more holistic perspective, which can sometimes be a hard thing for those taught that the world is here simply for man's exploitation (gender specificity intended). This volume is particularly effective in giving students a well-rounded introduction to many of the most important issues in environmental writing today. As the seriousness of our ecological problems persist and even worsen, this book will continue to be a highly informative source of information for students and instructors for years to come.
Excellent Reader!.......2000-05-23
I'm convinced this is the best way to learn about Environmental Philosophy! While some sections are difficult and can bog you down, most are clear and well-written.
I'd recommend this book as both a teaching tool and as something you can pick up to learn on your own. It's more difficult than most pleasure reading but the subject is particurarily heavy.
This kind of education is essential to the environmentalist or someone trying to understand the movement.
