4 out of 5 stars Honest and Interesting Book, Good.......2003-11-05

I started reading this book because I had heard that Patrick Roy, who passed Terry Sawchuk's record of most winningest goalie, was reading it in order to find out more about the goalie he would be passing in the record books. What I found out as I continued reading was that even if you are just a fan of hockey in general, this is a great read. It is so honest that it is almost surprising that the Sawchuk family would want to release some of the information the reader finds out. It is even more interesting to read if you know someone who was an alcoholic, because Terry goes through many of the same troubles that other alcoholics do. The pictures included in the book are helpful and they give an idea of the people in Terry's life as well as the surroundings in his life. The writing style is easy to follow no matter how good of a reader you are, though sometimes the many statistics and names of other hockey players get confusing and boring. All in all, the Sawchuk book is fun to read and it really lets you in on Terry Sawchuks life on and off the ice.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT LOOK AT THE GOOD AND BAD.......2002-04-14

THE AUTHOR DOES A SPECTACULOR JOB SHOWING THE GREAT CAREER OF A HOCKEY LEGEND. FROM HIS CHILDHOOD TO HIS FINAL DAYS, TERRY SAWCHUK WAS A VERY COMPLEX MAN. GOOD VS. EVIL FIGHT ALWAYS GOING ON INSIDE HIM. THE DREADED DEMON ALCOHOLISM IS WELL DESCRIBED AS TO WHY HE HAD SUCH ANGER AND MOOD SWINGS. A GREAT CAREER AND TURBULENT FAMILY LIFE. EVERY ASPECT OF SAWCHUK'S LIFE IS SO WELL DESCRIBED BY MR. DUPUIS. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BIOGRAPHIES I HAVE READ. THANKS FOR A GREAT JOB MR. DUPUIS. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4 out of 5 stars Good, Easy, and Interesting Reading........2001-11-29

I bought this book as a present for my husband, who is a die hard hockey fan. But, I ended up reading it myself and I really enjoyed it. I get to know more of Terry Sawchuck than just the old NHL goalie whose record was just got broken by Roy. It is not the best written book, but it tells the story that it is suppose to tell. It was an easy and enjoyable reading and I am not even a Red Wings fan.

3 out of 5 stars Review of the Terry Sawchuk biography.......2001-05-15

The author's skill in writing indicates that this is a three-star book...as long as you understand that this was written by a fan, for fans. It is not a literary classic. The sentence construction is simple, but that's part of the charm of this book. Interwoven in the book are interviews with Sawchuk's wife, a couple of engaging surviving former teammates, and most obvious, research done in newspaper "morgues". It is written chronologically, highlighting season achievements. Of most interest to me are the tales told by his wife. Sawchuk was a full-blown dysfunctional alcoholic. His wife was most happy when Sawchuk was not around, although the man was around enough to produce seven children.

The fight/horseplay with teammate Ron Stewart that led to Sawchuk's death was covered in detail. That's mainly why I bought the book. I knew of his career highlights, which you can see on the back of his hockey cards. There weren't enough behind-the-scenes stories regarding each season to hold my interest.

I understand Jerry Sawchuk, the eldest child, also has written a book about his father. I get the feeling that his book, plus the Dupuis tome, put together could produce a satisfying final product. I need more than Dupuis offers, and finished the book feeling somehow unsatisfied.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2000-10-25

One of the best sports books I have ever read. I could not put this book down. The writing style is terrific and the game descriptions are vivid and captivating. A terrific story of Terry's on ice and off ice lives. Riveting. The book also makes the reader appreciate the toughness of hockey's "old-timers." If you are a hockey fan, you will love this book.

3 out of 5 stars You Liked the film? You'll like the book........1998-11-04

'The Making of a Movie That Should Not Be Made'. That could be a more appropriate title for this book, as far as I am concerned. However, objectivelly, it has been done very good work here, with detailed photos and texts concerning the SFX etc. It would be an essential purchase if you liked -ahem!- the 'movie'. I put it only 3 out of 5 because I actually hate the film, but if you are a fan of it the score is 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting behind the scenes look.......1998-05-30

I must admit, I am not a Batman and Robin fan. I only bought the book because George Clooney was playing the latest Batman. In spite of this, I found the book very interesting to read. It gave a very detailed behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was made. If you're into Batman movies (or movie making in general), I think you'll enjoy it.

i have never read anything by henry rollins before i purchased this book. and i fell in love w/ his writing. i have now bought almost every book by him and in the process of reading them. his books touch me in a way, and help too. its hard for me to find a book, let alone an author that i like as much as henry rollins and his books

5 out of 5 stars Very few touched me as this..........2005-11-06

this is the most honest, heartbreaking work I've read. It puts your personal misery into perspective, reminding you what it means to live life. Even after you lose those that make you whole.

    5 out of 5 stars Honest Writing.......2003-09-18

There is so much farcity in the world today that it's so good to come across a writer like Henry who's willing to show everyone what he thinks, how he feels, what his life is like and how he perceives the world around him.

This book is very brutal and honest, which I think always makes for good writing. He has a very clear perception of the people around him and how they think, which lets him view the world from all sides including his own. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to open their eyes to someone else's reality.

5 out of 5 stars The world's most powerful book.......2002-03-03

7 years ago, a friend of mine read me a poem from "Now Watch Him Die" (They were seperate books back then). It's the one on page 164 of this volume, the one that starts with "I love you and you'll never know." Since then, I have not gone anywhere without a copy of these books close at hand. They are an all-encompassing chronicle of one man's solipsism, isolation, desperation and depression. This may not sound fascinating, but that man happens to be Henry Rollins, who has a talent for intensity and a command of words rivaled by no one of this era. Not since Bukowski has someone used so little to say so much. If you are ready for a descent into a maelstrom of anger, violence and pure, blinding pain, then this is the book for you. If you're looking for something sappy, sweet and redemptive, then try Oprah's Book Club instead.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent albeit depressing work.......2001-08-18

I bought this book on a whim one day from a local bookstore and wasn't able to put it down. It's a brutally honest rendition of a life filled with tragedy, depression, doubt and one unsuccesful relationship after another. It's one of the more depressing books I've read, but I pick it up even when I'm feeling down. The intense emotion is almost palpable, you'll feel every bit of rage, heart-ache and frustration, loneliness and confusion. See a Grown Man Cry is worth every penny you pay, every minute you read and every pang of grief you feel for the suffering Mr. Rollins. If you ever by a book by Henry Rollins it should be this one.

    4 out of 5 stars To Mock a Mockingbird.......2004-06-22

After a disconnected array of logic puzzles at the beginning, the author embarks on an introductory course to combinatory logic. Given a little application (if you're like me you will need a pen and paper), you can get to grips with some of the fundamentals of mathematical logic with relatively little background. This is pretty astonishing.

The worst feature of the book is the fact that only one (unintuitive) model for the theory is provided. Discussion of the significance of the results obtained is not particularly useful - probably anyone smart enough to solve the puzzles will not find anything there that they couldn't figure out for themselves.

But nevermind: if you want a good introductory course in combinatory logic (or you want to understand (a version of) Godel's 1st incompleteness theorem), then I would recommend this book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Simple introduction to functional programming........2004-05-31

This book by Smullyan is different from his other puzzle books,
in that it is fully about puzzles from functional programming.

The birds are functors that compute on strings.
Self reference comes into play when the Mockingbird
shows you what a fixpoint computation is.

The phethora of birds may confuse you if you try to read it
fast or skip solving the puzzles. The problems are not
easy, it took the mighty mathematical titans - Turing and Godel
to provide the initial solutions. If you are stuck,
Smullyan provides all the solutions at the chapter end.
It requires concentration and remembering previous tricks,
something akin to solving Rubik's cube without a solution guide.
You will love it if you love chess problems.

In the end you will come out with a deep sense of
accomplishment having understood the proof of Godel's
incompleteness theorems, Combinatorial Logic, and Functional
programming, when all you thought you were doing was figuring
    out puzzles of birds.

Hard to find book, but its worth its weight in gold.
The other book to complement this is "Forever Undecided,
a puzzle guide to Godel" by Smullyan, it uses Modal logic
puzzles to motivate you, but the end result is the same.

Remember Smullyan is Professor of mathematics and logic,
he is classy and witty like Knuth. Don't confuse him
    with the popular mathematical journalists.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome book.......2002-03-20

A reviewer of one of Smullyan's other works called him "a national treasure" and I have to agree. To Mock a Mockingbird is a fantastic book -- whether you're looking for fun logic puzzles or a lighter look at formal logic theory. This book is better than any college textbook, and right up there with any of Martin Gardner's best works. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction to combinatory logic I can think of........1998-03-25

Various sets of increasingly sophisticated puzzles & scenarios in a combinatory forest where all the birds are combinators. Great way to understand interesting results from combinatory logic without cumbersome definitions. Mockingbirds are M, which is also YI, Curry bird's response to Identity bird... hilarious.

Deborah Benton has written a must-read book for all us cubicle dwellers who lack real credentials or talent but nevertheless want a quick, if flimsy, façade of competence and don't mind being a little sleazy about getting it.

Here is Barnum's dream - a handbook for creating an artificial aura of respectability. Forget your lack of organization skills, inability to use written English, and that little sexual harassment episode. None of that matters now. Instead, it's all about pausing before you enter a room, or adjusting your chair to create "your" space.

If you want to silicone-enhance your career prospects, read this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Insulting.......2007-01-11

I find this book insulting and find that the author reminds me of the Ask Heloise lady for *corportate culture.* Bleh is right. This was required reading from an executive and it blows. Insightful is right - but I disagree -if we all listened to these "techniques" than no one would have individuality. I believe that you can be distinct and STAND OUT without conforming to this lady's advice. Hello 90s - wake up it's 2007 - and her ways are antiquated. Corporate culture is changing. I wonder what she'd have to say about that?

    Book Description

Mark Katz was the kid who cracked jokes from the back row of seventh grade English class-but grew up to write humor speeches for the president of the United States. Clinton Me is his comic account of an eventful path from the principal's ofce to the Oval Ofce and the many stops along the way. Over the course of eight years in the chaotic Clinton White House, his job was to write the president's funny response to the crisis of the moment-from 'I did not inhale' to 'I did not have sex with that woman.' How did Mark Katz wind up in the White House? He spent his childhood trying to make the Nixon Enemy List and deploying classroom jokes to deny others their education. He hitched his wagon to Michael Dukakis' star-only to become the joke writer on a campaign that was a joke unto itself. Four years later, he was an unemployed copywriter when he got a call from a flailing Clinton White House in need of jokes. And the rest, as they say, is comedy. Clinton Me chronicles an unforgettable presidency from a unique vantage point, weaving Wonder Years-hindsights with high-stakes, real-life West Wing drama. Sure to nd a home on nightstands next to the books of Christopher Buckley, David Sedaris, Al Franken, and George Stephanopoulos, Clinton Me is a life-long coming-of-age story unlike any political memoir ever written.

3 out of 5 stars He Only Has to Make One Person Laugh.......2005-05-20

Writing jokes for political people is unlike writing jokes for someone like Letterman or Leno. If the President or Secretary of State tells a joke, chances are everyone is going to laugh, whether the joke is funny or not. People tend to hold Letterman to a higher standard, humor-wise. So the guy who writes jokes for the President only has to make the President laugh. Which may explain why I didn't find Mark Katz's book very funny.

While I was interested in how someone becomes a joke writer for the President, I was not as interested in Katz's rather boring, suburban New Jersey childhood. I really did not like his revenge-tinged stories of teachers who found him disruptive in class, or his kiss-and-tell story of how, after he became successful, he got lucky with a woman who wouldn't go out with him in college.

The story drags until he gets back to the political stories. I enjoyed reading about Katz's dealings with Madeleine Albright, Al Gore, and Bill Clinton. I even enjoyed the story of the bizarre negotiations to get Big Bird and Barney on the same stage with the President. And the book ends with a pretty good story, too.

Oddly enough, the jokes Mark Katz tells here are not funny. On the other hand, George Stephanopolous, Al Gore, and Katz's friend, Fisher, come across as very funny. And what is with the footnotes? I usually read footnotes, but Katz goes crazy with them here, and this isn't even the sort of book that really merits footnotes.

So, my advice is to quickly skim the first half of Clinton & Me, skipping the footnotes, and enjoy the second half.

    4 out of 5 stars Calling All Clinton-ites! .......2005-04-08

This book CAN be hazardous to your social life- merrily reading this book while on my bus route to and from work, often led me to laughing out loud which is never good when you are a single girl hoping to meet interesting men. But while it may not get me a date, it did help keep some of the crazy people from the empty side of my seat. So there is an up side!
For those of you out there who are either true Clinton fans or true political junkies- this book will not only quench your desire for all the Clinton WH trivia, it will also open an eye into the behind the scenes stuff we all crave. Mark has written a book that is not only laugh-out-loud funny but also insightful and chockful of the kind of little details that true political junkies are dying to hear about. Thru his eyes, we not only meet the President but we get to see the WH on good days and bad, and see the cameraderie as well as the push and pull of who is on the hot list. Mark is so funny and so talented that you will find yourself reading over the best parts just cos you enjoyed 'em so much. And apart from the WH stories, his little asides, footnotes and redactions are hilarious!! Those are maybe the best parts. I also really responded to his honesty- whether he is detailing how he felt (from being dazzled by Barbra to drinking too much and spewing his dinner) or admitting to a real need for praise, he is as honest as he is funny.
Maybe the best part.....as a kid who grew up similarly to him, I found it wonderful to discover that sometimes not fitting in means you end up in a place that fits you. Mark Katz certainly did, and his very great book makes us all glad of that!

5 out of 5 stars Best book from the Clinton White House.......2005-02-04

Katz tells what has to be the best story to come out of those working within the Clinton White House.

He of course is not a major player in the administration but through his number of trips to work with various people in preparing speeches he is able to give an uncommon insight to the people who led this country.

Very good flow and entertainment. A definate must buy for anyone even if you were not a Clinton supporter.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I have read all year.......2005-01-01

Although I am not a great Clinton fan, I am more of one now and a big fan of Mark Katz. If you have any interest in politics this is a MUST READ.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...and laughs.......2004-12-03

If laughter is the best medicine, then Medicare providers should prescribe Mark Katz' book Clinton and Me. More so, after waking up with a political hangover from this last presidential cycle, this book is an important reminder that our democracy is less tragedy and more comedy. Mark Katz, of course, knows this since he earned his stripes as President Clinton's joke writer. This book will not only teach you about the joys of government service but will do so while laughing out loud. This is part memoir, part political history but two parts joke book. Clinton and Me is not irreverent but revealing. Mark Katz' wit demonstrates that our politics would be far less divisive and negative if we learned to take ourselves a little less seriously. One thing we should take seriously is Mark Katz' hysterical book Clinton and Me which is by far the best political read of the year.

        Book Description

The Militarization of Culture in the Dominican Republic, from the Captains General to General Trujillo traces the interaction of the military and the civilian population, showing the many ways in which the military ethos has permeated Dominican culture. Valentina Peguero categorizes the Dominican military before 1930 as protectionists, facilitators, or self-servers, a framework that sheds new light on Dominican civil-military relations.

Peguero synchronizes the history of the Dominican military and that of Dominican society from her dual perspectives as a native of the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo era and as a historian who is well acquainted with the country’s history and literature. She shows how the brutal Trujillo dictatorship created La Nueva Patria (The New Fatherland) to promote a new order and present the military as a model for society, imposing military principles on the civil society and mixing military culture with popular culture to reshape the nation. Structured around interviews with former military personnel, scholars, and politicians, this study brings to life documentary information and presents a poignant narrative that describes the unintended consequences that resulted when Trujillo valued arming the nation above meeting the needs of the populace.

            Book Description

Marco Verweij presents a new and challenging theoretical framework within which to understand international relations, based on the cultural theory developed by Mary Douglas, Michael Thompson, Aaron Wildavsky, and others. By applying this framework in a detailed study of the environmental protection of the river Rhine in Western Europe and the Great Lakes of North America, he also contributes to a better understanding of how transboundary environmental problems have been, and can be, solved.
