Book Description

With humor and personal insight, the keys to entrepreneurial success are revealed in this portrayal of 12 of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 20th century. The 12 psychological characteristics needed to succeed in starting a new business are outlined, each exemplified by one of the chosen entrepreneurs. Iconic business leaders such as Henry Ford, Martha Stewart, and Hugh Hefner are presented as possessing premier examples of essential psychological traits, including the willingness to fail, a focus on perfectionism, and the need to listen to one's instincts. Included is a self-assessment exercise to help determine one's propensity for entrepreneurship and a time line to help keep new ventures on the right track.

Gene takes the reader inside the minds of twelve of the greatest enterpreneurs of this century and the last. If you're more interested in WHY they achieved than WHAT they acheived, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The most achieving in the world of business........2004-06-03

This is a book which tells the reader about hugely successfull entrepreneurs who followed their instincts in order to make their visions become realities. The book profiles some of the most accomplished people of their times. Some have already made history such as Henry Ford who founded the first company which sold cars to the mass market,as well as Sam Walton who is remembered for revolutionizing the retail world.Others profiled in this book include Jeff Bezos and Michael Dell. The former introduced the world to the power of the internet as a vehicle for shopping.Without him this review may well could not have been written. This book also provides a psychoanalytic analysis of these great entrepreneurs and explains thoroughly how their intuition acts as their ladder to success.Personally,i have read the biography of Sam Walton,Henry Ford as well as Dell and Bezos. However, this book explained things that were not available in those mentioned biographies.Example:-If you read Sam Walton's biography,he wouldn't be able to explain how his intuition acted in helping him with his business decisions as thoroughly as in this book, although the author seems to have researched those biographies well before writing this book.Indeed ,he uses evidences from those books to support what he mentions in the book.A young person may learn more from it than an older person.I do believe it will help those who are intending to enter the business field in future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nat's all that. What a legend.......2001-03-15

Humble family beginings to world champion, husband to father, party animal to entrepreneur. Through all this Nat Young was destined to be a surfer and one of the best the world would ever see. This book is a fascinating combination of surfing history (Australian in particular) and the history of a man who pushed to get every ounce of enjoyment out of life. This is a very informative, yet light hearted book with more than its share of incredible surfing tales. From surfing the best waves the world has to offer, the early days of the world tour and the unavoidable changes of the 70's. This book is nothing short of the ultimate life style a surfer could wish for. Reading this book inspired me on more than one occassions to get out in the waves and make the most of my life. A must read for all surfers.

5 out of 5 stars This book will detonate your youthful & adventurous spirit.......1999-09-08

This book is long overdue. As a surfer and skier who grew up in the 70's and 80's Nat Young was the inspiration to us then and to teenagers today. He was one of the front runners who not only showed us how to do it but he did it with a passionate, laid back style. This read gives you the chance to know Nat as a person and to be inspired by his youthful, adventurous soul.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Overview Of Japanese Fantastic Cinema.......2003-08-03

Ghosts and monsters of various breeds have haunted Japanese cinemas for decades, recently culminating in the spectacular worldwide success of RINGU and its sequels/remakes. Anyone remotely interested in this strange and hypnotically fascinating sub-genre absolutely needs to read Stuart Galbraith's remarkably entertaining and informative JAPANESE SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND HORROR FILMS, easily the definitive work to date on the subject.

Galbraith writes in a breezy and humorous fashion, providing detailed , often witty synopses and brief critical examinations of over one hundred titles, covering any/all films released in the U.S. during the period 1950 - 1992. As such, it affords an excellent historical background to the current and much heralded renaissance of Japanese cinematic horror. Of particular interest is Galbraith's refusal to instantly demean any of the films on hand. He takes the films cultural and artistic differences from the U.S. norm at face value and attempts to succinctly explain any appeal each individual movie might have. This is not to say that some of the titles don't get mercilessly slammed--they do, deservedly so. Its just that Galbraith tends to provide a much more thoughtful critique than the usual "Bad Special Effects, Terrible Dubbing" mantra so often spewed out by xenophobic American-based reviewers.

The book's final one hundred pages are devoted to a remarkably detailed filmography, with full cast and technical crew credits to every film discussed in the main text. As the author notes, this is easily the most extensive such listing of Japanese fantasy films ever put into print. The filmography in itself makes the book an unqualified necessity for fans of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars ATTENTION DAIKAIJU EIGA FANS: You Need This Book !.......2000-04-13

As a kid, I remember walking with my brother down to the Saturday matinee to see King Kong getting whupped by Godzilla, Rodan buzzing over the streets of Tokyo and the tiny twin fairy ladies singing their praise of Mothra. I didn't know it then but these kinds of movies were part of the "Daikaiju eiga" genre (Japanese giant monster movies) that Mr. Stuart Galbraith writes about so eloquently in his marvelous reference book "Japanese Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films".

Absolutely ANY Daikaiju eiga film released in the U.S. that you can remember (...and some that you no doubt have forgotten about! ) are described in this book. From the studios of Toho and Daiei, you will find ALL of the 20+ Godzilla and 7+ Gamera films as well as EVERY other sci-fi movie made by the incredible team of Tomoyuki Tanaka, Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya (producer, director and SFX master of the original Godzilla films). Some of the lesser known but still wonderful films discussed include The Mysterians; Attack of the Mushroom People; Kwaidan; Onibaba; The Magic Serpent; Majin Trilogy; Atragon; The H-Man; War of the Gargantuas and Frankenstein Conquers the World.

With 424 pages laid out chronologically, Mr. Galbraith provides in-depth detail on more than 103 films including storyline, actors and their roles, production background, release notes and comments from contemporary reviews. Also included is a filmography of the genre from all Japanese studios including cast, crew and Japan/U.S. release information. A rather large bibliography and index complete this masterful work. This book was obviously written with great love and affection for the films at hand - I am quite sure that Daikaiju eiga fans will not be disappointed with their purchase of this book!

More than two decades ago, when former Wall Street portfolio analyst Judith H. McQuown first sat down to write the inaugural edition of Inc. Yourself, the incorporation of a small company was a fairly simple procedure undertaken by relatively few refugees from the then-burgeoning safe haven of big-time corporate America. But while the appeal and the underlying need for striking out on one's own have increased markedly in the interim, the continual passage of major tax-law changes has ensured that incorporation is no longer such an uncomplicated process. Accordingly, in this ninth edition of her bestselling primer, McQuown still outlines the core information necessary to turn any enterprise into a separate legal entity replete with all of the rights, privileges, and liabilities that such a move entails. But she also updates those suggestions for today's small businesses whenever appropriate, and bolsters them with important details on newly available options for pension plans, organizing the venture, and sheltering its income from taxation. --Howard Rothman

                Book Description

The completely revised 9th edition of the bestselling classic (over 500,000 copies in print), Inc. Yourself is the most comprehensive, user-friendly guide to the tax breaks and legal benefits of incorporation.

Whether you're building a company with many products and employees or you're self-employed, Inc. Yourself can show you how to take advantage of the tax breaks and legislation that benefit start-up ventures. This latest version of the bestselling classic includes:

                new information on pension plans
choices of business organization, and investing your corporate surplus for maximum tax-free income
changes in tax law over the past three years
specific advice for women and minorities
sample forms, letters, and interactive worksheets to help you tailor the book's suggestions to your own circumstances

This is one of the top three books on how to start your business and incorporate with the other two being Loopholes of the Rich and Rich Dad's Advisors: Own Your Own Corporation.

Another would be How To Incorporate in Any State: Everything You Need To Form a Corporation by W. Dean Brown.

On S Corporations, the best book I have found is S-Corporations by Robert Cooke.

Everyone that I know who is successfu in business is recommending these books. And for good reason, they work and are written by people who have actually been in the trenches and speak from experience.

Beware of certain [some] self publishers who have never had any real business experience and merely plagerizing the better authors such as those mentioned above.

5 out of 5 stars An essential first read in starting your corporation.......2004-03-05

Before starting my business, I consulted with several successful business people that I knew. Aside from getting some great advice, all recommended this book as a essential first read before starting my corporation.

Now that I have read it, I agree and wholeheartily recommend it to anyone who wants to start a business and their corporation, correctly.

5 out of 5 stars A good book to help you set up your corporation.......2004-03-05

I read the 8th edition of this book and got a great deal from it. Loaned it out, never got it back so back the newest edition. This is the book everyone else is copying. It's the best. Complete with forms and charts to help you get your corporation going.

I also recommend Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State and the Small Business Legal Kit, both by J.W. Dicks and Inc. and Grow Rich by C.W.Allen.

CAUTION: There are several books being put out by self publishers. These, some anyway are being promoted by paper tigers i.e. people who are writers only and have no real world experience. Much is outdated and the best of what they offer is in good quality books like this one and the others mentioned above.

                Goff luck withyour business.

5 out of 5 stars Lot's of good information in this book.......2004-01-03

Inc. Yourself provides a vast wealth of information on incorporating, the benefits you can get and why. Inc. Yourself is an easy read....pretty straightforward.

The fact that Inc. Yourself is now in it's 9th printing with more than 500,000 copies in print should tell you something about the great work done by Judith McQuown and the popularity of this great work.

As a companion to Inc. Yourself, You'll want to pick up a copy of Launch Business and Incorporate in Any State by J.W. Dicks and/or How To Incorporate in Any State by Brown.

This book deserves a solid five star rating and is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Incorporating your business.......2004-01-03

I have read many books, talked to a lot of friends who started their own corporation and searched internet for tips. Without a doubt, Inc. Yourself is the "Bible" of Incorporating your business. Everyone that I know who is successful recommends this book. It is outstanding and will give you all the information you need to set up your corporation properly.

I want to caution you on the internet. There is some really bad advice with some people using the internet to hype their own books. Talk to someone you know who is in business. Check your local library and bookstore. HINT: If the book isn't available in the bookstores or your local library, it probably isn't worth your time.

If someone you know is a successful business person doesn't recognize a author, chances are the author is just a "paper tiger" with no real world experience.

I have not spoken with anyone who has not heard of Judith McQuown and everyone highly recommends her book.

                5 out of 5 stars A Great Portrait of a Great Man.......2003-07-28

The First volume of this work by Murray shows the dynamism of a man who strived for Christ-Exalting Power. After reading the is biography I can only ask myself, "Can such men live again?" What made Dr. Lloyd-Jones so used by God?

I suggest at least three factors:
                1) He placed the origin of revival at the proper source, God. His theology of revival was supremely theocentric. He knew that true revival is when a Sovereign God awakens the hearts of his people. Such a revival proves real conversion.
                2) Second to his power was the need for holy study. At a time when the academia in Britain were denying the sacred text, and with no conservative alternative, Lloyd-Jones filled the gap and held high the Scriptural banner. What was said of Edwards could be said of him: "He put fidelity to the Word of God above all else." Also was his constant study of great theologians like the Puritans, Jonathan Edwards, and Warfield.
                3) Although this theme is brought out more in the second volume, he was more concerned with pleasing God than appeasing men. This is seen in him giving up a medical career for a pastorate. Would to God that there were more preachers who lived before an audience of one!

At times his theology will challenge one. His view on Baptism in the Holy Spirit is worth dialouging and debating. And for some, he will appear odd in that he was a Calvinist evangelist, a model for men to come. His message is desperately relevant for us today.

5 out of 5 stars Stirring Account of Evangelical Leader.......2000-05-21

First volume of Murray's substantial biography on Martyn Lloyd-Jones stands head and shoulders above every biography I have ever read. What a great man of God was Lloyd-Jones, and what a great God he served. From the account of his childhood in Wales, to his prominence in Harley Street as a physician, to his conversion and subsequent ministry in Aberavon, this is a wonderful book. Not a story full of dramatic happenings, but rather the quiet obedience of a man who shunned publicity, but was honored by the God of heaven, and saw the mysterious and sovereign movings of the Spirit upon his hearers. Well documented with numerous sermon excerpts, newspaper quotes, and personal interview with the "Doctor" and his wife themselves, this was a fantastic book with which to end 1997. I shall treasure this volume always, and make a point to read it more than once more in the years to come. I thank God for this book and the inspiration it has been to me.

                Book Description

Over the next half century, the human population, divided by culture and economics and armed with weapons of mass destruction, will expand to nearly 9 billion people. Abrupt climate change may throw the global system into chaos; China will emerge as a superpower; and Islamic terrorism and insurgency will threaten vital American interests. How can we understand these and other global challenges? Harm de Blij has a simple answer: by improving our understanding of the world's geography. In Why Geography Matters, de Blij demonstrates how geography's perspectives yield unique and penetrating insights into the interconnections that mark our shrinking world. Preparing for climate change, averting a cold war with China, defeating terrorism: all of this requires geographic knowledge. De Blij also makes an urgent call to restore geography to America's educational curriculum. He shows how and why the U.S. has become the world's most geographically illiterate society of consequence, and demonstrates the great risk this poses to America's national security. Peppering his writing with anecdotes from his own professional travels, de Blij provides an original treatise that is as engaging as it is eye opening. Casual or professional readers in areas such as education, politics, or national security will find themselves with a stimulating new perspective on geography as it continues to affect our world.

2 out of 5 stars Occasionally insightful, but generally uninspired.......2007-08-29

I would describe this book as the rambling--but occasionally insightful--musings of a thoughtful scholar. Unfortunately, many, if not most, of Blij's arguments are not made from a geographic perspective. For instance, his chapter on the European Union rambles on for page after page about the history of the EU from the European Coal and Steel Community, to the European Economic Community, to the European Community, and, finally, to the European Union. That's not to say that's not and interesting and important history lesson for people who are unfamiliar with EU history, but its not geographic! I was hoping for a book of theories explaining human events using reasoning built on spatial orientations or location. Why Geography Matters had some of that, but Blij could have, in my view, omitted much of the voluminous background information. Doing some would have made his book more concise and allowing his genuine insights to be featured more prominently.

And for what its worth, the book could have used a better editor. For instance, on p.160 it refers to "South Ossetia" as a Russian Republic instead of North Ossetia. I noticed a couple errors like this.

Perhaps, I would be more positive about this book if its last chapter hadn't been the low point. The chapter on Africa had absolutely nothing original to say (AIDS is bad, we need to do more to stop it; colonization and slavery were bad too; Africa has been plagued by bad leadership; etc.).

                5 out of 5 stars Important book.......2007-08-28

This is an exceptional and needed introduction to Geography and how it relates to world problems.

5 out of 5 stars What we should have learned in school about the world..........2007-05-27

This is essential reading for anyone who should have a sound foundation of knowledge to back up one's social commentary, but doesn't. Geography can be understood and used to understand our world with great clarity. Everyone who watched Al Gore's movie should read this book if only to know that Harm de Blij has been explaining geographic issues for decades better than nearly anyone.

The US Department of Education needs to buy and issue a copy of this book to every teacher in America.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative reading.......2007-05-13

This is definitely a quality work in the field of Geography with an emphasis on Politics i.e. GeoPolitics. However, it is important to point out a couple of incorrect facts I found while reading this work.

                1. On page 190 we have the statement, "On an aircraft carrier off the coast of California, President Bush declared "mission accomplished.", regarding the war in Iraq. If you read the speech that President Bush gave, you will find that he never uttered the words "mission accomplished." The author just regurgitated this line from the biased print media i.e. The NYTimes, Time, Newsweek, etc... Intuitively, if you think about it, George Bush, assigns the mission to the military and after assigning the mission to the military he is not going to turn around and say good "mission accomplished. That is what the military's response, will be, to the President, after they have completed the mission. This is reflected by the fact that the military hung a banner up on the aircraft carrier that said "Mission Accomplished."

                2. On pages 193-194 The author states. "The American invasion severly damaged the city, which was for months afterward, and remains as of this writing, without a reliable water supply, power, medical facilities, or schools." It is very true that much of the infrastructure in Iraq is severly damaged, but the author has tried to blame this on American firepower and it is simply not true. The precision guided weapons our U.S. forces utilized were excellent at avoiding collateral damage. The truth is more damning for the Saddam regime. THE INFRASTUCTURE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY 30 PLUS YEARS OF NEGLECT ON THE PART OF THE BAATH PARTY AND NOT AMERICAN MILITARY MIGHT. Also, the military planners who provided for getting the infrastructure back online, after the war, grossly underestimated the level of the existing infrastructure of Iraq, before the U.S. military even set foot inside the country.

Overall I recommend this work, but it cannot be given five stars due to these errors.

                  Book Description

"The ABCs of Political Economy" is an accessible introduction to modern political economy. While informed by the work of Marx, Keynes, Veblen, Kalecki and other great political economists, "ABCs" teaches readers the essential tools necessary to understand economic issues today from a modern perspective.

"The ABCs of Political Economy" empowers people who are dissatisfied with today's economies but are often intimidated by conventional economic analysis. No previous economics background is assumed, and everything is explained in clear language in eight core chapters. Examining the nature of today's economic market, issues of economic justice, macroeconomics and globalization, Robin Hahnel provides an ideal introduction to key economic ideas, offering a critical perspective on our present system and outlining clear alternatives for the future.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to non-Marxian radical economics.......2006-04-13

In "The ABCs of Political Economy" Robin Hahnel presents radical economic theory in an accessible and competent manner. Hahnel rejects Marxian economics and largely uses neoclassical models (there are a number of passages based upon Sraffian economics though). Using theories developed by radical neoclassical economists since the 1970s, Hahnel demonstrates why the term "market failure" is all but completely redundant. Of course, I am a supporter of heterodox economics, particularly Marxian economics. I do not think Hahnel's reasons for dismissing Marxian economics is very sound.

Chapter 1 is a general discussion of people and social institutions. Chapter 2 discusses conservative, liberal, and radical views of economic justice and desert. Even as a hardcore utilitarian, I can appreciate Hahnel's demolition of the liberal and conservative positions. Even if one decides to make value judgments about desert, these particular ones are especially incoherent. Beyond theoretical problems with these views of justice, Hahnel reviews the evidence on distribution under capitalism and shows that reality couldn't square with liberal justifications of capitalism even if they were logically sound.

Chapter 3 develops a "corn model" (an economy in which corn is the only consumer good produced) and draws some conclusions about equality and inequality from it. This is almost identical to the model in John Roemer's tedious and pointless book "Free To Lose." The amazing conclusion that people with more wealth have to work less than those with less wealth is drawn. Corn models, some quite similar to this, are used to better effect elsewhere in the book. However, they don't really require this chapter at all. Chapter 3 should have been completely dropped.

Chapters 4 and 5 are on microeconomics, and are the best chapters in the book. Using E.K. Hunt's "invisible foot" theorem, Hahnel extends a conventional discussion of market failure to show how inefficiency snowbalss in capitalist economies. The "conflict theory of the firm," the most important contribution of radical political economy, is reviewed in excellent fashion. Profit maximizing firms may choose inefficient techniques if these techniques redcue the bargaining power of labor (e.g. a team production technique may be more efficient than one with a minute division of labor, but the former will give workers a better chance to communicate and maybe organize). It is also shown that in Sraffian models, efficiency will only be achieved if the profit rate is 0.

Chapters 6 and 7 competently offer a left position on macroeconomics.Chapter 8 is an excellent discussion of how trade can be highly inefficient, all the while only diverging a little bit from the assumptions of standard trade theory. What you can discover if only you don't ignore it! However, there are some tecnical problems in parts of this chapter. Ron Baiman corrects them (and salvages the general conclusion,s basically) in the January 2006 issue of Review of Radical Political Economics in an article called "Unequal Exchange Without a Labor Theory of Prices." Chapter 9 is an excellent and innovative model of banks and financial crashes. Chapters 10 and 11 offer conclusions and policy suggestions.

Most of the ideas in this book have been developed elsewhere in a rigorous fashion for professional economics. If you want to try your hand at this more difficult literature, Hahnel and Michael Albert's "Quiet Revolution in Welfare Economics" covers many of the issues discussed in this book. "Markets and Democracy," edited by Bowles, Gintis, and Gustaffson would also be of interest.

5 out of 5 stars The Book I Was Looking For.......2005-10-07

This is the book I've long been looking for, a clear, in some sense mathematical (though no calculus required) elucidation of how, why, and when markets fail, and when they work, and what the real alternatives are.

Of course, market zealots and fascist hypocrites will hate it, but this is the best book I've found so far.

Everyone truly concerned with justice, liberty, equality, fairness, efficiency, and so on must first read this book.

2 out of 5 stars Introduction for novices.......2005-02-12

I agree with the previous reviewer. An introduction aimed at those with no previous knowledge economics, since having any would hamper the author's credibility, I am afraid.

4 out of 5 stars geared towards me?.......2004-03-23

This book is a good introduction to political economy for people like myself who have little previous knowledge of the subject. Its both very informative and very accessible. I would definitely recommend at least attempting to read through the chapters containing models for those who might be a little adverse to doing some math. On the other hand, Hahnel is right when he says you don't have to read them to understand the rest of the book.

Although I have only taken a couple of econ courses in college, I've taken a great deal of math and I was still a little confused by how some of the computations were written out. I actually found it easier to sort of skip the written computations and work backwards from the solutions/conclusions to understand them.

The only other issues I have with the book is that it can be redundant at times and Hahnel used enough double negatives for me to take notice.

On the whole, a good introduction. I am however tempted to read Capitalism and Freedom or some other conservative econ book to determine how salient Hahnel's arguments really are.

5 out of 5 stars clear alternative to mainstream economics.......2003-07-09

                  inequitable results but are also

a clear answer to questions like this
is the strong point of the book.

Several of the chapters use very simple
game theory models to explain things
                  like the "unequal exchange" that
                  keeps the global south impoverished
                  despite foreign investment and trade.
The final chapter, on the economics
of "equitable cooperation," provides a succint
                  statement of some anti-capitalist
                  programmatic ideas.
