      Book Description

Few athletes attain the status of legend while still playing the game. From the time John Elway first donned the orange and blue of the Denver Broncos in 1983 -- at the head of the awesomely talented quarterback class that included Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Todd Blackledge, Tony Eason, and Ken O'Brien -- he has been one of those rare figures whose star shines brightest when the pressure is highest. Of the illustrious six taken in that 1983 draft, only Elway can wear a Super Bowl championship ring.

With his strong passing arm and outstanding scrambling ability, Elway quickly established himself as the most dangerons quarterback the game has ever known. Eluding the rush, throwing across the field, making plays that no other quarterback could see much less execute, Elway's patented fourth-quarter heroics carried the Broncos to the brink of greatness year after year. And, at last, in 1997 he got to lead a team that he did not have to carry, that had the running game and defense to enable Elway to be a part of a great team, not to try to lift one singlehandedly.

In John Elway: The Drive of a Champion, the editors of Sports Illustrated have collected the greatest moments from Elway's remarkable career: From his formative years at Stanford University, through his brief flirtation with professional baseball, to such football highlights as The Drive against the Cleveland Browns, and of course substantial coverage of the Broncos' stirring victory in Super Bowl XXXII. With stunning four-color photography and the outstanding writing of Rick Reilly, Rick Telander, Peter King, Michael Silver, and many others, John Elway is an irresistible chronicle of the life and career of a true football immortal.

      4 out of 5 stars Somewhat incomplete.......2004-06-03

Considering the wealth of information present in their archives, I would have expected more from the folks at SI for their retrospective of John Elway. All in all, SI writers have been fair and appreciative of John's playing over the years and this book goes even farther, leaving out the worst memories and amping up the best. It's out of print now but can usually be found on Ebay fairly easily.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reprint of early Sports Illustrated articles.......2000-08-12

This book is not to be missed for John Elway fans. It reprints a total of 18 Sports Illustrated articles covering the career of John Elway, ranging from 1981 (when he was still a junior at Stanford) to 1998 (his first Super Bowl victory in SB XXXII). Photos that appeared in the original articles are also reprinted with each story. Left out are what might be termed the "negative" articles (i.e., none of Elway's first 3 Super Bowls are covered), while several of Elway's more amazing regular season and playoff victories are reviewed, leaving the reader with an overwhelmingly positive impression. In this book, you can read about how heralded an athlete Elway was all the way back in college, and how his acclaim followed him through his career in the NFL. One critique I would give this book is that, for space, all the articles have been edited, and so each chapter includes several annoying ellipses (...) that let you know you're not reading everything that was originally printed. However, the bulk of the stories are included. If you are interested in reading an objective (i.e., non Denver beat writer) account of what type of QB John Elway was and how he helped the Broncos (and the Stanford Cardinals), this book is not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Elway book for any football fan.......1998-05-28

This book covers the Elway career from College all the way to the big game in January where he finally got his much deserved Lombardi. It has several excerts and SI Photos from the past. A true collector's item

          Book Description

James Mason broke into British films in 1935 after a few years working on the stage. For the rest of the decade, he alternated unsuccessful theatre ventures with increasingly important movies. Though he was a conscientious objector, he became one of the most popular British actors of the World War II era. He moved to Hollywood after the war and made 34 films between 1949 and 1962. Though success initially eluded him, he worked with some of the leading directors of the time and eventually won an Academy Award nomination for A Star is Born (1954). He worked steadily in the years that followed, appearing in nearly 50 feature films from 1963 until his death in 1984. While many of these films were undistinguished, he earned two additional Oscar nominations and was voted Cinema Actor of the Century by a panel of international critics in 1967. This reference book is a comprehensive guide to his life and career. The volume begins with a biography in narrative form that traces Mason's life. The biography is followed by a short chronology, which highlights the principal events of his life and career. An extensive annotated bibliography then reviews works by and about Mason. The sections that follow detail his many performances in film, radio, television, audio recordings, and the stage. Each section includes entries for individual productions, with entries providing extensive cast and credit information, plot summaries, excerpts from reviews, and critical commentary where available. The volume also lists additional information, such as Mason's awards and nominations.

            Book Description

Back in print for the first time in decades! The Unidentified and Creatures of the Outer Edge, the classic early works of Jerome Clark and Loren Coleman, now in a special double edition with a new introduction by the authors.
The Unidentified finds the links that connect supernatural folklore, religious visions, cryptozoology, and modern-day UFO stories. It documents episodes from the fringes of human experience and exposes what they may tell us about ourselves and the strange world we live in, where things - whether fairies, ghosts, divine apparitions, or ostensible extraterrestrials - may be even more mysterious than they seem.
Creatures of the Outer Edge surveys the cryptozoologically bountiful decade of the 1970s (and more) with accounts of Mothman, Owlmen, Thunderbirds, Phantom Panthers, Devil Dogs, Texas Big Birds, and, yes, of course, Bigfoot. Some of the individually "named" local Bigfoot creatures first appeared in this book, including Momo (Missouri Monster), Lake Worth Monster, Murphysboro Mud Monster, the Enfield Thing, El Reno Chicken Man, Noxie Monster, Navajo's Skinwalkers, and Yukon's Bushman. The book also introduced the now-iconic Dover Demon for the first time to the general public.

I actually read Creatures of the Outer Edge back around 1972 or so. I thought it was fascinating. Back then I read lots of books related to the supernatural, UFOs, etc. This book was my favorite. I plan to purchase it and read it again. I highly recommend this book.

Danger in the Comfort Zone: From Boardroom to Mailroom: How to Break the Entitlement Habit That's Killing American Business
              by Judith M. Bardwick

This is one of the very good books I had acquired while attending a boot-camp for entrepreneurs in the United States during the early nineties. (My copy is actually the earlier edition.) At that time, I had read it very seriously. I had really liked the author's ideas of earning mentality (or habit) vs entitlement mentality (or habit).

The many problems & scenarios which the author had described candidly about the American workplace were not much different, when I compared them with Singapore's. Contemporarily, Singapore's employers had encountered the same dilemma. It was only after the economic recession during the mid-eighties & then the Asian financial fiasco during the late nineties that employees' attitudes, in both the private as well as public sector, had changed tremendously. Likewise, employers' attitudes had also followed suit.

At first glance, the author would seem to have criticised employees but I feel the principal premise of the book is more to urge employees to take charge of their own lives by getting out of the comfort zone & moving into the stretch zone. That is true self empowerment: adopt the earning mentality rather than the entitlement mentality!

Of course, employers would have to play their part to gain employees' confidence & trust. Their 'command & control' attitude in the past would have to change.

Hence, I would strongly recommend readers to read also 'We Are All Self-
Employed: The New Social Contract for Working in a Changed World' by Cliff Hakim. This book was written in the mid-nineties.

I feel the two authors' brilliant ideas gel very well with each other. In fact, their combined work will make more sense when read syntopically. They will help you transform the way you think about & approach your employment in the corporate world.

To paraphrase the latter book: "It will inspire you to move from the role of dependent employee, ever-adapting to survive, to independent-Interdependent worker, ever-creating to succeed. You'll learn to embrace a "self-employed" attitude to achieve the success you have always yearned for. Adopting a "self-employed" attitude will prepare you for the inevitable changes that come with time, & help you create a new definition of success rooted in your own interests, skills, values, & desires. It will help you move from merely surviving on the job to engaging your creativity - embedded in the responsibility symbolized by self-employment - & successfully employing yourself in a way that draws on your talents, interests, & deepest values."

I had really enjoyed reading both books tremendously.

In some way & to some extent, the wonderful ideas from the two foregoing books had consciously as well as unconsciously contributed to my eventual decision to take charge of the second half of my life.

1 out of 5 stars Not even one star. More like negative 5 stars.......2005-07-07

For those that like using these factors in your labor force I suggest you practice the techniques on someone in your family first, see how it effects them when someone plays with their mind - and I don't mean the family members you aren't fond of. Pick the ones you really care about and apply this strategy on them. I bet you end up getting a divorce or written out of a will or two, and forget about seeing the grand kids at Christmas.

This book sets the labor movement back to the stone age. It is unfortunate for big business that they must rely on humans to lift the corporate bale and God forbid that they have families and feelings.

It is very obvious that the author has never worked on a frontline with some outrageous quotas to make - no breaks, no air conditioning, not allowed to go to the bathroom without permission, and have to sit there without having any personal feelings about the situation. PUT OUT AND SHUT UP. That sums up the whole book.

Use fear? Why not go for a whipping stick like they do in other countries.

Yeah, that's corporate progress. Isn't that how we ended up with EEOC and the Department of Labor in the first place?

Steven Covey ............... look away............Dale Carnegie ...... cover your eyes..............

              1 out of 5 stars Especially disturbing........2001-11-04

An especially disturbing book because it provides management who wish to do so with a pseudo-scientific pretext for using fear as a tool against their fellow members of the organization. Additionally, these ideas applied promote factionalization among organizational members, which increases complexity by causing people to work for a subset, rather than the whole of an organization. This is encouragement to compete rather than cooperate. If this work were written by a foreign writer, I would guess that it's intent was to help perpetuate international business superiority by giving North American management poor, neo-Tayloristic ideals wrapped (warped) in an attractive package and presented as new thinking. Fear as a motivation is a tool of the insipient, including self-serving management. Management by Fear should find the same way as Taylorism, Management by Objective and other idiotic management principles, onto the old heap of intellectual rubbish we should be embarassed of. For constructive management theory, read about Japanese conglomerates we buy most of our better products from, or explore W.E. Deming's Profound Changes.

              5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-10-16

At first glance, Judith Bardwick's influential book, first published in the early 90s, seems scarcely relevant in the opening months of the 21st century. After all, the sense of corporate entitlement that she documented was certainly swept away in the layoffs, restructurings and reengineerings of the last decade, right? Of course, anyone working in a large organization today knows that's not entirely the case. Bloated bureaucracies still exist. But more importantly, Bardwick's simple observation that external economic environments influence and even create internal workplace environments is just as true today as it was the day she wrote it. So too are her words of advice about managing and harnessing employee fear to motivate a workforce into a productive mindset. That said, not all of Barwick's observations have aged so well. For example, you'd be hard pressed to make the case today that the work ethic has died in America. Nevertheless, we [...] recommend this book not as a slice of management history, but as a relevant and practical discourse on employee motivation.

5 out of 5 stars Entitlement Can Breed Complacency, the Enemy of Progress.......2000-05-09

Danger in the Comfort Zone looks at the unintended consequences of making rewards and recognition in an organization too independent of how the individual and the organization are performing. Mostly these consequences are harmful, by making people focus on keeping what they perceive belongs to them rather than responding to important challenges. In that sense, this book has a lot of parallels to Spenser Johnson's, Who Moved My Cheese?

This message comes as quite a surprise to humanistically-oriented managers who just wanted to treat people fairly and unburden them from unnecessary stress and concerns. The shock can be quite substantial to this message in large bureaucracies (another source of stalled thinking that leads to complacency). Ms. Bardwick is definitely from the Tough Love school of management.

Using a sort of behavioral model, Ms. Bardwick argues for making rewards and recognition more closely match the performance of the individual and the organization. All rugged individualists will automatically agree. What many people will miss is that her message is fundamentally a humanistic one, aimed at helping people and organizations to fulfill their potential with as little stress as possible. Think of this as realistic humanism.

Cynics will see her view as a negative one towards people, assuming the worst. I think that is an incorrect view. On the other hand, it is bad idea to view management as a behavioral experiment. B.F. Skinner didn't do so well when he put his child into a box to program him, after all.

If you like this book, you may want to read its follow on, In Praise of Good Business. That book is easier to agree with, but is less well written than this one. Both are thought-provoking, which is what is needed to overcome stalled thinking about working with people. A good counterpoint for this book is The Soul at Work, if you want to apply the scientific model to the problem in a different way.

Lots of people have put forth theories on what makes Bill Clinton tick, but the most trustworthy source may be David Maraniss of the Washington Post. Maraniss won a Pulitzer covering Clinton's campaign, and his book on the man is nonpareil; you simply can't understand Clinton without reading Maraniss's anaylsis of his past. When Bill Clinton is good, he is very, very good, and when he's bad, he's exactly like he has been all his life. Fair-minded but no apologist, Maraniss is essentially an inspiring reporter who, virtually alone among Americans, has troubled to interview Clinton's Oxford classmates and therefore knows that Clinton was, according to them, not lying when he said he "never inhaled"; his classmates devoted hours to teaching Bill to inhale, but he just couldn't do it. Maraniss also casts light on what Clinton did imbibe intellectually at Oxford; precisely what he did to elude the draft, and its moral significance; how Arkansas politics shaped his political style; and what his character and marriage might actually be like. Yes, Maraniss gives us a comic scene in which fiancée Hillary comes through the front door of the campaign headquarters while a young female staffer is hustled out the back--but more importantly, Maraniss puts such events in perspective. As he once observed in the Post, "The question of whether a president who cannot control his sexual appetite should not be president is a tough one. It might mean that most of our presidents should not have been presidents."

                Book Description

Who exactly is Bill Clinton, and why was he, of all the brilliant and ambitious men in his generation, the first in his class to reach the White House? Drawing on hundreds of letters, documents, and interviews, David Maraniss explores the evolution of the personality of our forty-second president from his youth in Arkansas to his 1991 announcement that he would run for the nation's highest office. In this richly textured and balanced biography, Maraniss reveals a complex man full of great flaws and great talents. First in His Class is the definitive book on Bill Clinton.

david maraniss is also fair... approaching it all as a Fellow Human just trying to get along in the world...

it was so interesting because ~ say what you will about bill clinton ~ he's the most interesting capable man of a generation...

I decided I hated Clinton a few days after 18 of my brother soldiers were slaughtered in Mogadishu. It was the day the first load of wounded Rangers came back to the states. I dont expect Presidents to be standing tall every moment wounded troops come back. But I do expect they would have enough decency not to tout their health care initiatives by visiting wounded gang bangers on such a day (as Clinton did). I read this book a few years after that incident. Still hate Clinton and her husband......just not as much!

Mr. Maraniss paints an interesting picture of Bill Clinton. Here is a truly brilliant man who learned the ins and outs of the American political system. A man who can spend a law school semester on the campaing trail yet manage to pass with some intense studying at the least moment (Im a law school grad an freely admit I couldnt do this!). But he also shows us the spoiled child side too. A person who was doted an indulged in his early years and who essentially got everything he wanted. Its no wonder he thought he was too good to serve in the military! Speaking of that Mr. Maraniss puts to bed for all eternity the draft issue. He makes it quite clear Clinton received an induction notice and then did everthing in his power to avoid service. Why should he serve his nation or follow his marriage vows? He was the best of the best and should be above the law!

So there you go. The good and the bad of a very polarizing character in a very intriguing format. Clinton lovers, nows the time to hit the not helpful button and get the hate email flowing!

If you are a right wing nut, stay away from this book, you might actually appreciate and respect Bill Clinton. Maraniss really sheds light on the former President's childhood, initial interest in politics, Arkansas' governorship and his announcement for the presidency. Unbiased and definitely a page-turner. I have read a bunch of Bill Clinton books and this is definitely one of my favorites. You do not need to be a policy wonk or even a political hack to enjoy learning about our 42nd president. Even some of my Republican friends find his ascent interesting and even revealing as to some of his decision making during his time in the White House. A great book, a greater president, two thumbs up!!

4 out of 5 stars A great reflection of a truly great president.......2002-10-20

First, the title of this story can be misleading. In highschool, college, at Oxford and Yale, Clinton was never "first in class," based solely on grades. But, who cares? Clinton is one of the best presidents in United States history and Maraniss gives an inside look into the life of this great man despite not interviewing anyone in the Clinton family. He uses research based solely on interviews from those people closest to the man himself. When you reach for this book don't think it will give you an inside look at the presidency. It rolls along in chronological order from birth to announcement of candidacy for the 1992 presidential election so never gets to the presidency. It does however provide some interesting insights into the Clinton marriage, and the Clinton psyche. His temper, although rare is described well in this biography. Overall, it is a great read for anyone who wants to know more about a former president. Everything from his Oxford years and apparent affairs with other women not named Monica Lewinsky or Paula Jones. Perhaps the greatest thing about this book is how Maraniss remains neutral. Regardless of his like or dislike of Clinton, he never shows it.

5 out of 5 stars An Eminently Readably Biography of a Fascinating Man.......2002-10-18

I'll just start this by saying that I recommend this book wholeheartedly. Maraniss does a fantastic job of creating an incredibly readable work and his research here shines through. Interviews with former friends, old letters, yearbook signatures...! If you want to gain a better understanding of Bill Clinton, both his strengths and weaknesses, I strongly urge you to read this book.

As a Clinton fan, I read all of the bios and his autobiography. "First" remains my favorite because it details Clinton's evolution from a boy born into less than ideal circumstances with only 3 assets---an adoring mother, scholastic achievement and a singleminded goal to become president---to making the american dream come true. I recently purchased another copy for my nephew, who is shopping colleges. This is a must read for all who doubt the power of education to change your life not just for the better, but for the best.

NOT your standard political biography. Excellent example of the craft of biography, regardless of the subject. This reads reads like fiction and author David Maraniss clearly deserved his Pulitzer for his balanced reporting on the Clinton '92 campaign. The 400+ page book ends with Clinton's announcement for president. This goes a long way to explain why Clinton is the way he is. Love or hate him you can't be indifferent. A must read before the electiion

This is an excellent study of Patton's exploits with the Third Army during the march across Europe in 1944-1945. The book has a day-by-day summary of the activities of the Third Army each day during the drive towards (and later through) Germany. While not technically a primary source, this book should be of primary interest to anyone studying the Third Army or its commander.

                    Book Description

Making a Place for Community argues that misguided politics at the local, state and national level have damaged local community life in the United States. Such policies not only undermine America's long-term economic health, they weaken the basis of local democracy. In the absence of a sustained policy commitment to stabilize the economic basis of healthy communities, isolated attempts to "revitalize" downtown or strengthen community values will remain hopelessly inadequate.

Grounded in decades of research, this work offers brilliant solutions that defy conventional wisdom. Without busting the budget and halting development, the authors' smart new policies and grass-roots solutions, from land trusts to local ownership, show how to reign in sprawl and anchor jobs in the community.

5 out of 5 stars The "Go To" Book on Alternative Local Development and Democracy in America.......2007-04-13

This is a wonderful book that traces out the organic, deep connection between local democracy and its economic underpinnings, which are under threat by neoliberal globalization, corporate relocation, and urban sprawl. Beyond the critique, however, it sets out the alternative institutional possibilities in a wide-ranging survey of production cooperatives, ESOPs, publicly-owned (and profitable) businesses, community-supported agriculture, and other sustainable alternatives that work.

My only caveat is that the book is at times dryly written, like a survey. A few more judiciously chosen, in-depth case studies of the most successful alternatives would go a long way to making it more readable and digestable for, say, university undergraduates (whom I have used it with in my teaching). That said, the book does such a superb treatment of a topic great in scale with many alternatives that need to be set out -- which this does so very well -- that the book is a real "keeper" and user in classes -- WHEN supplemented by more lively case studies and related readings. One book can't do everything for everybody -- but this one lays out the fundamental agenda for connecting local democracy to sustainable economics and ecologies. In that sense, it's a tour-de-force.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for serious political activists.......2004-05-24

This is one of the first books to tie together disparate concerns about globalization, job loss at home, and suburban sprawl into a coherent theoretical and practical framework. It's also an incredibly informative and hopeful look at the ways local communities can use alternative economic structures to provide jobs that are really rooted in communities. This book does more than just critique the system--it offers serious ideas about a positive vision for the movement. A must read--

Ecologists increasingly recognize the importance of scale in our understanding of nature. Landscape ecology in particular emphasizes temporal and spatial scales. While research and management of wildlife has traditionally emphasized studies at smaller scales, it is now acknowledged that larger, landscape-level patterns strongly influence demographic processes in wild animal species. This book is the first to provide the conceptual basis for learning how larger scale patterns and processes can influence the biology and management of wildlife species. It is divided into three sections: * Underlying Concepts * Landscape Metrics * Applications and Large Scale Management Wildlife and Landscape Ecology will be welcomed by scientists and managers with interest in and responsibility for the health of wild populations and their role in ecosystems.

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2000-06-25

"Wildlife and Landscape Ecology" is a good reference for wildlife professionals and graduate students interested in large-scale questions. The book features 16 essays organized into 3 sections: Underlying Concepts, Landscape Metrics, and Application and Large-scale Management.

With so many new books on landscape ecology, it's becoming difficult to tell them apart. I have found the following chapters especially useful: Bruce Milne's "Applications of Fractal Geometry in Wildlife Biology," Pickett and Rogers' "Patch Dynamics: The Transformation of Landscape Structure and Function," White and Harrod's "Disturbance and Diversity in a Landscape Context," and Pearson and Gardner's "Neutral Models: Useful Tools for Understanding Landscape Patterns."

While all authors but one are North American, the concepts discussed and examples provided are widely applicable.
