Informative but not a WOW! book to me.......2000-11-19
I've got it, there's a lot of information (historical and biographical) here but I wasn't bowled over by it. The most valuable part may be the Sophie material that it contains, she hasn't been abused the way Diana was.
just get it!.......2000-05-26
I have checked this book out so many times at my local libary I just may have to get a copy of this book for my own personal collection! the author has done other books about the wedding of Charles and Diana and Andrew and Sarah . They were very good books, yet this one is the absolute best one of them all! the stories about the couple are terrific, the pictures are senstional! a grand book to read if you are a fan of the royal family! highly recommened!

Book Description
The Adventures of Moccasin Joe: True Life Story of Sgt. George S. Howard, includes the complete translation of Sgt. Howard's diary as he led wagon trains across the Oregon and Bozeman Trails from 1872 to 1877 as a scout for the Second Cavalry, Company E. He hunted bison, elk, deer and antelope to fed his Army unit and fished for 3-pound trout in hundreds of rivers and streams across the state of Nebraska and the territories of Colorado, Wyoming, Dakota and Montana. Sgt. Howard called himself Moccasin Joe but the Shoshone, Sioux and Northern Cheyenne called him Scarhead the Crazy Scout. The book contains chapters on how the author researched his life and how she took her 13-year-old son with her to follow in Moccasin Joe's footsteps in 1990 when Wyoming celebrated its first 100 years as a state. More than 100 never-before-published photographs from the 1870s are included and an extensive annotated bibliography is at the back of the book. The entire book is indexed.

The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31
This final volume of Toffler's trilogy argues that the control of knowledge has become the principal means to create wealth and power. In a way, the book predicted the productivity explosion of the 90's and the birth of the knowledge economy even before the "invention" of the www. His arguments about the growing conflict between the flexibility required by the knowledge economy and the inherent inflexibility of bureaucratic structures were a natural continuation of his Third Wave vs. Second Wave mentality: "...all bureaucracies discourage out-of-frame thinking and the examination of root premises." This book, along with "The Third Wave", provides useful methodological metaphors for critically analyzing 21st century Jewish life and proposing alternative Jewish futures based on the opportunities of globalization. This is what I tried to do in my book "The Optimistic Jew: a Positive Vision for the Jewish People in the 21st Century".
Fifteen years later A different world. Toffler as the author of 'Future Shock'.......2005-12-07
Toffler is the man who gave the world ' future shock'. He is one of the principal popularizers in helping the broader public understand the social implications of scientific and technological changes. The pace is too fast, taught Toffler, for our bodies and minds to really keep up.
Having shocked the world with 'Future Shock' and tried to revolutionize our thinking with 'The Third Wave' Toffler here again makes an effort at coining an Age-Defining- Concept. However here as with 'The Third Wave' a whole bookful of intelligent insights are not enough to make a concept strike home. For all of us Toffler will be in the years to come , 'Mr. Future- Shock' and nothing else.
As for the Power shifts, I would simply point out Reality usually defies our predictions for it. Toffler's book did not have the 'Internet' it did not have the rise of Radical Fundamelist Islam. It did not have suicide bombers and a huge China and a growing India standing greedily at the Middle East petrol pump.
Even the greatest prophet mises a lot.
Great Book.......2005-04-24
This is a great book though i read it in 2005, 15 years after its publishing!!! A great futuristic reading
As good as it can get.......2004-10-18
Amazing insights .... coupled with relevant interlinking between the socio- eco - political environment ..... makes it an interesting reading. Did someone say its all about paradigm ? Guess YES.
Excellent Book.......2004-06-06
All of Toffler's books are amazing. I can't say enough good things about them. Those who do not like his books are clearly just those types who hate anything that becomes too popular. Someone should explane to them that just because something is well-liked doesn't mean it suddenly lacks value. Toffler has predicted so much that has become true. His great ability to use social science to show us the future is beyond impressive. Future Shock, The Third Wave, and Powershift. Read all three.

I'm not sure what book this other reviewer is raving about, but it can't possibly be about this one because it isn't a "fantasy book" - it's a guide to the Wild Arms Playstation game. Anyway, the book isn't terrible - it has a useful walkthrough to get you through the game. But I thought it was misleading when the title said "Unauthorized Game Secrets" and I didn't find any secrets in the book at all. Just a walkthough and monster list - things I can easily get online for free. You're better off saving yourself some cash and get the info online.

Book Description
For seventeen years and through two editions, this Handbook has been the indispensable "bible" for every serious student of leadership. This third edition reflects the growth and changes in the study of leadership since the 1981 edition. There have been shifts in both content and method. Senior managers, for example, have become an increasing subject of inquiry. Distinctly separate fields of inquiry, such as political science and psychology, have been joined in this edition to build a broader appreciation of the phenomenon of leadership. Throughout the Handbook, the contributions from cognitive social psychology and the social, political, communications, and administrative sciences have been expanded.
As in the second edition, Bernard Bass begins with a consideration of the definitions and concepts used, and a brief review of some of the better-known theories. Professor Bass then focuses on the personal traits, tendencies, attributes, and values of leaders and the knowledge, intellectual competence, and technical skills required for leadership. Next, he looks at leaders' socioemotional talents, interpersonal competencies, and the differences in these characteristics in leaders who are imbued with ideologies, especially authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, and self-aggrandizement. A fuller examination of the values, needs, and satisfactions of leaders follows, and singled out for special attention are competitiveness and the preferences for taking risks. In his chapters on personal characteristics, Bass examines the esteem that others generally accord to leaders as a consequence of the leaders' personalities. The more general examination of the personal factors associated with leadership has been extensively reorganized and expanded, and increased attention has been paid to knowledge, information, and intellectual ability, as well as to power and political tactics.
The many developments in theory and research about charisma since 1974 have now made possible an entire chapter devoted to charismatic and inspirational leadership. Bass argues that a new paradigm of leadership -- transformational leadership -- has arisen that makes possible the inclusion of a much wider range of phenomena than when theory and modeling are limited to reinforcement strategies.
Studies of women increased dramatically during the 1980s. Accordingly, Chapter 32 on women and leadership has been considerably expanded over the chapter in the second edition. Completely new to this edition are studies by European and Japanese investigators on the accelerating internationalization of management.
Finally, a glossary has been included in this edition to assist specialists in a particular academic discipline who may be unfamiliar with terms used in other fields.

One Concept.......2007-01-03
This is a great book for serious Scholars doing research but those just looking for leadership/business books it is important to remember that this is only one concept of leadership.
A must read for all serious scholars of leadership.......2000-03-25
I have found the "Handbook" to be most useful. I disagree with my Swedish friend above about the book. In fact below is a snippet from THE journal of leadership about the book. According Schriesheim, Scandura, Gardiner and Lankau (1993) the Handbook is "the outstanding foundation source for information on leadership theory and research" (p. 104). Schriesheim et al. state further that the handbook is "the source which scholars should consult first in attempting to understand any of the subsidiary topics...subsumed under the general rubric of 'leadership theory and research'" (p. 108).
Reference: Schriesheim, C. A., Scandura, T. A., Gardiner, C. C., & Lankau, M. J. (1993). Book Review: Bass & Stogdill's handbook of leadership: Theory, research & managerial applications by Bernard Bass. Leadership Quarterly 4(1), 103-113.
A classic, comprehensive work.......1999-06-16
Bass presents a thorough, but brief synopsis of the findings in leadership research. His chapter on stress and leadership ignores the positive effects stress has on leader behavior and its relationship to subordinates.
Social science back 60 years?.......1999-05-01
This text displays a plethora of simplistic, presumptuous and shallow typologies purporting to explain what is a leader and why it has to be so. Without any concern for contemporary social studies the author tells us about what inborn qualities signifies a female leader, why there are fewer black leaders than white ones ("scientifically proven" low cognitive ability according to the author, pp. 740-741), and the litany goes on. It is baffling that this stuff is still available in the book market as anything else than obscure reminiscences of American social science in a time we rather forget about.
A most in Leadership learning and training.......1998-06-15
Its multiple models presentation, allows a better approach and understanding. Teaching at our university system, and helping organizations, this book is a fundamental reference for help.

Book Description
Bill Ayers was born into privilege and is today a highly respected educator and community activist. In the late 1960s he was a founder of the militant activist group the Weather Underground. Living on the run, stealing explosives, and hiding from the law, Ayers was involved in the defining moments of his generation: the Days of Rage, SDS, the Black Panthers-and the explosion that killed his beloved comrade, Diana Oughton. Fugitive Days tells of these turbulent events, and of the tenacity with which Ayers slowly rebuilt his life after it all came apart. Ayers writes openly about his regrets and what he continues to believe was right. The result is a profoundly honest account of an incendiary chapter in our history.
Customer Reviews:
YOU DO NEED A WEATHERMAN (PERSON) TO KNOW WHICH WAY THE WIND BLOWS-PART II.......2007-07-04
Recently in this space I reviewed the documentary Weather Underground so that it also makes sense to review the present book by Bill Ayers, one of the `talking heads' in that film and a central leader of both the old Students for a Democratic Society and the Weather Underground that split off from that movement in 1969 to go its own way. Readers should see the documentary as it gives a fairly good presentation of the events around the formation of the Underground, what they tried to accomplish and what happened to them after the demise of the anti-war movement in the early 1970's.
To get a better understanding of what drove thousands of young American students into opposition to the American government at that time the documentary Rebels With A Cause (also reviewed in this space) is worth looking at as well. Between those two sources you will get a better understanding of what drove Professor Ayers and many others, including myself, over the edge. Professor Ayers makes many of those same points in the book. Thus, I only want to make a couple of political comments about the question of the underground here. They were also used in my review of the Weather Underground documentary and apply to Professor Ayers thoughts as well. I would also make it very clear here that unlike many other leftists, who ran for cover, in the 1970's I called for the political defense of the Weather Underground despite my political differences under the old leftist principle that an injury to one is an injury to all. Moreover, and be shocked if you will, the courageous, if misguided, actions of the Weather Underground require no apology today. I stand with the Professor on that count. Here are the comments.
"In a time when I, among others, are questioning where the extra-parliamentary opposition to the Iraq War is going and why it has not made more of an impact on American society it was rather refreshing to view this documentary about the seemingly forgotten Weather Underground that as things got grimmer dramatically epitomized one aspect of opposition to the Vietnam War. If opposition to the Iraq war is the political fight of my old age Vietnam was the fight of my youth and in this film brought back very strong memories of why I fought tooth and nail against it. And the people portrayed in this film, the core of the Weather Underground, while not politically kindred spirits then or now, were certainly on the same page as I was- a no holds- barred fight against the American Empire. We lost that round, and there were reasons for that, but that kind of attitude is what it takes to bring down the monster. But a revolutionary strategy is needed. That is where we parted company.
One of the paradoxical things about the documentary is that the Weather Underground survivors interviewed had only a vague notion about what went wrong. This was clearly detailed in the remarks of Mark Rudd, a central leader, when he stated that the Weathermen were trying to create a communist cadre. He also stated, however, that after going underground he realized that he was out of the loop as far as being politically effective. And that is the point. There is no virtue in underground activity if it is not necessary, romantic as that may be. To the extent that any of us read history in those days it was certainly not about the origins of the Russian revolutionary movement in the 19th century. If we had we would have found that the above-mentioned fight in 1969 (the SDS splits) was also fought out by that movement. Mass action vs. individual acts, heroic or otherwise, of terror. The Weather strategy of acting as the American component of the world-wide revolutionary movement to bring the Empire to its knees certainly had (and still does) have a very appealing quality. However, a moral gesture did not (and will not) bring this beast down. While the Weather Underground was made up a small group of very appealing subjective revolutionaries its political/moral strategy led to a dead end. The lesson to be learned; you most definitely do need weather people to know which way the winds blow. Start with Karl Marx."
PSYCHOS WITH PRETTY WHITE FACES.......2006-10-07
TO THINK THAT THESE PEOPLE WILL MAKE MONEY OFF THIS HOGWASH IS VERY DISTURBING. THE AUTHOR GOES ON AND ON ABOUT HOW "RIGHT" HE WAS TO ENGAGE IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES - WITHOUT MENTIONING THE PEOPLE HE HURT BY HIS ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES. BUT WHAT REALLY BOTHERS ME, IS HIS MEMORY OF A 1981 ROBBERY WHERE 3 INNOCENT MEN WERE KILLED IN COLD BLOOD - THE AUTHOR DOESN'T EVEN CALL IT A ROBBERY - BUT A WAY TO GET MONEY FOR THE CAUSE. FURTHERMORE, HE GOES ON AND ON ABOUT THE HORROR OF SPECIAL RIGHTS OF WHITES OVER BLACKS, BUT FAILS TO MENTION THAT IN THE TRIAL OF THE 1981 ROBBERY KILLERS, THE BLACK ACTIVISTS GOT 75 YEARS TO LIFE, BUT KATHY BOUDIN - A WHITE FRIEND OF THE AUTHOR - PLEA BARGAINED WITH THE HELP OF HER WHITE DADDY LAWYER AND ONLY GOT 20 YEARS AND IS NOW OUT ON PAROLE. DID SHE HELP HER BLACK FELLOW ACTIVISTS? HELL, NO. WHAT HYPRICATES!!!
An intense reflection on a chaotic time.......2006-07-27
An intense reflection on a chaotic time
First and foremost, I have to say that I met Bill Ayers and Bernandine Dohrn years back at one of their speaking engagements. This was just months before Fugitive Days came out. It was fascinating to hear part of their story as well as their thoughts about our political climate back then (Spring 2001). That said, many of the reviews I have read on the book aren't fair to Professor Ayers - either his life or work. As an activist, I know what it's like to be angry about serious political issues. As a history teacher, I have developed an intellectual framework that helps me understand the context in which the Weathermen (and later, Weather Underground) came to be. And as a student of political science, I know that violence is used by people all over the world as a means to an end (good or bad, right or wrong). Strangely enough, many US citizens are quick to condemn groups like the WU while never objecting to the violent acts that their own government commits abroad. How many soldiers did we lose in Vietman? Under 60,000. How many Vietnamese died? Estimates claim between 2-3 million. If we believe in self-determination, then why is it our policy to meddle in the affairs of so many other countries where we are unwelcome to a large segment of the population? Something is really wrong. People like Bill Ayers couldn't sit idly by while our government killed people and wasted money on the Vietnam War. The WU destroyed property for a cause. Well, so did the Sons of Liberty during the Boston Tea Party amidst our Revolutionary War era. How many people criticize the Sons of Liberty for their unlawful actions? Not many. This event is discussed in middle school, high school, and college history classes and not once have I heard anyone strongly object to the act of destroying tea for political reasons. Why? Partly because our revolution was successful and we are free today thanks to people who challenged British authority. In other words, the colonists (soon after, US citizens) benefitted from the act as tensions grew between the colonies and King George III. Ultimately, the Tea Party pushed us closer to independence. Anyways, my point is that you cannot vilify Bill Ayers while celebrating the revolutionary spirit and actions of the Sons of Liberty because it's pure hypocrisy to denounce one form of violence while accepting another. Had there been another revolution in the 1960s or 70s, many critics might look at Fugitive Days in a different way.
All of this aside, my biggest problem with the book is that it spends a great deal of time building up and then ends far too abruptly. Furthermore, I found myself wondering which experiences (and events) might be more fiction than fact because our memories can fail us. Overall, it's an incedible story that is told with great conviction. Professor Ayers is also an eloquent writer. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading more about this time period.
Fugitive Days - A good lesson.......2006-06-24
Contrary to what others may think/say about this book, the Weathermen was a group who wanted to promote peace. They wanted to create a revolution for a better world. It is a misconception that they were "cop killers" or were "terrorists." They simply wanted people to wake up to the atrocities of the Vietnam War and rampant racism in America.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Dorhn and Mr. Ayers and they are two of the nicest people I know. They both are firm believers in peaceful resolution to problems of social injustice and are inspirational at panel discussions.
Rationalizing Terrorism.......2005-03-29
Bill Ayers and his wife, Bernadine Dohrn are two very sad indviduals, as the they (to-this-day) continue to rationlize their destructive, criminal behavior during their Weather Underground days. Of course Bill claims he isn't a terrorist as he and his collegues were merely targeting symbols and not people. Gee, Bill, does this make a bomb less dangerous or destructive?
This book is only worth reading as evidence that Ayers is a delusional fool. For more evidence of Bill and Bernadine stuck in a time warp, I recommend renting "The Weather Underground" DVD where one is treated to a commentary by Ayers and Dohrn. Among other things they advocate prison breaks, and the release of their former comrade-in-arms, David Gilbert, convicted for the murder of two police officers during the botched Brinks robbery in the early 1980's.

Book Description
"Old Dorm," which served as the first classroom and dormitory of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary, is a familiar tourist siteUnion Cavalry General John Buford directed the opening stages of the battle of Gettysburg from the building's distinctive cupola and some of the bloodiest fighting of the three-day conflict took place on Seminary Ridge. However, few visitors realize the building's important role as the second largest hospital at Gettysburg, both during and after the battle. During the peak occupancy, 600-700 wounded soldiers from both armies were cared for at this site.
This work presents the history of the Gettysburg Seminary during the Civil War and the important cast of characters that have passed through its halls by utilizing the firsthand accounts of soldiers, civilians, surgeons, and relief agency personnel. Also included is the prewar and postwar history of the Seminary, as well as information about President Samuel S. Schmucker and the Abolition Movement.

Nice, new perspective.......2000-06-12
While this book did allow me a glimse into a far away world (Mainly Africa)only some of the stories were truely worth reading. Most of them seemed to drag on and have no particular point. Even so, the environment and the dialogue were exceptional, and i truely learned about other cultures. There were only two stories in there i thought actually deserved four stars. One was "My First Lion Hunt." This story had plot, characters, humor, and a great ending. I would recommend just reading this story! I was a bit dissapointed in the lack of depth and plot in a few of the stories, and the terrible endings (they didn't seem very well thought out). However, for the most part this was an enjoyable and educational book. FOR FURTHER READING go the PEACE CORPS web site and read some of the stories there! Enjoy!

Geraldine Kennedy's choices cannot be faulted. I don't know of any other volume that has captured the Peace Corps spirit as insightfully as "From the Center of the Earth."
from VILLAGE VIEW.......1996-06-19
The collection contains a surprising amount of humor for a book grounded in cultrual turmoil, global poverty, linguistic confusion, and a decent amount of tragedy. . .a crash course in cultural relativism while capturing the pecular sights, struggles, and smells of distant places
from THE ATLANTA JOURNAL, THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION.......1996-06-19
The writers share the belief that people of different cultures can come together in mutual appreciation and respect for their differences, though the experiences they describe are at times wrenching. A superb collection, the book captures the Peace Corps spirit insightfully
from BOOKLIST, The American Library Association.......1996-06-19
"Pretty exotic" will be many a reader's conclusion, but so will "thoroughly human," i.e., funny, raffish, tragic, cruel, . . this is a powerful, engrossing collection

Book Description
Voice from the Sea covers five decades of Margaret Owingss writing and conveys the passion that underlies her lifetime commitment to the preservation of wilderness. Her essays, poetry and art weave the voices of the sea, the forests and wildlife into a rich tapestry of passion for the natural world. Margarets lyrical words evoke images of storm-tossed seas, ancient redwood glades, moonlit nights in Africa, cliff dwellings of the Southwest and the artists, writers and friends who shared her fascination with nature, and fierce sense of stewardship.

Poetic and Inspirational.......2007-01-05
This book will appeal to those who find poetry in nature and are inspired to work for the preservation of nature in all its many forms. It has a lyrical style that I read in small sections so I could thoroughly absorb the beauty of the descriptions. The author's battle to save the sea otter from extinction and to help preserve the mountain lion for future generations to enjoy was a motivation to me to work likewise. We are all part of the natural plan. This book helped me to find my place in this grand plan for all living creatures.
Voice from the Sea.......2006-05-18
Superb collection that should be in the library of every good conservationist! Covers many years of the great work that Margaret Owings did with a surprising number of conservation orgs, starting with the founding of Friends of the Sea Otter.
