Book Description
Born in 1953 in Selma, Alabama, Terry Leach first plays baseball as a Little Leaguer. In college, he stars at Auburn until an arm injury threatens his future. He recovers sufficiently to pitch sidearm and enter the independent leagues in Louisiana, which led to his major league career. For every Sosa, there are a dozen major-league players such as Leach. His professional pitching career began in 1976 with an independent minor-league team in Baton Rouge and ended in 1993 with Birmingham in the Triple AAA minors. In between, he pitched parts of 12 seasons in the majors, won 38 games, pitched almost 700 innings, and had a very respectable 3.37 earned run average. He was never a star, and every season of his career was a struggle to make a major-league roster. What dominates this book is Leach's love for the game, its camaraderie, its history, and his small role within it. Guys turning down contracts for millions of dollars often say--and fans know better--"It's not about the money." It's nice to know there are some players who can truthfully say that. Leach is such a player. This book relates his precarious experiences in baseball. His perspective is that of someone who was always fighting for the last roster spot on the team because he was never quite talented or young enough.
Customer Reviews:
An OK baseball book.......2000-10-13
This book is a short fast read a fairly detailed account of Terry Leach's major league career. While it contains almost no controversy or dirt, espicially when he was a member of the "bad boy" Late 80s Mets, the book is a good read when if you would like to know about the lesser players in baseball.
A nice try, but it comes up short.......2000-04-25
To be honest, I really wanted to like this book because Terry Leach seems like a good guy and an honest man, but this book isn't one that I'll think of when I think about good baseball books. It's an autobiographical account of his playing days in college at Auburn, the minor leagues, and the big leagues with the Mets, Royals, Twins, and White Sox. It's not a very well-written book. For example, there are a number of grammatical errors. He tends to use the word myself a lot when he could just use I or me. He also makes way too many excuses for his failures (I wasn't used right, I was hurt, etc., etc., etc.,) and he also complains too much about not being treated right by the different teams that unceremoniously dump him. When he does taste success he can't stop raving about himself or praising himself. On the plus side, this book is easy to read and easy to follow. It's possible to finish this book in the amount of time it takes to watch an entire major league baseball game. Another good thing is that he doesn't have anything bad to say about old teammates, managers, etc. The closest he comes to bad-mouthing someone is when he says that he didn't care for some of his teammates in the minors. He seems like a genuinely good man, and that's why it's too bad this book wasn't a bit more interesting to read.

Great guide to help you chose what you may like.......2003-06-04
This is not a "tell all" or an "include all" guide to adult movies. Instead this guide does two things. First it lets us know what types of movies you can get through Good Vibrations and why they are so selective. That probably isn't so interesting to most readers of this review. The second thing this guide does is give a good background on what adults movies should do, advice on finding what you like, and a historical lesson on the industry. If you are looking for hundreds of pages of reviews, that isn't this book, nor will this book give you a blow by blow description of the movies it does review. Instead it helps you figure out what you are looking for and how to find it before you waste another chunk of money on porn you can't stand to watch.
Selective, but useful and friendly........1999-02-17
It is difficult to select adult videos, no doubt about it. Especially for women. Now, I'm a straight male, so (supposedly) just about anything would work for me, but in reality, I'm fairly selective. Sexy, like funny, differs greatly from one person to another, so just because my best friend may like a video entitled "Nothin' But Breasts" I may not. The "sex positive" (and mostly female) crew at Open Enterprises/Good Vibrations has put together a guide to what they think are videos worth watching, on the basis of actual storyline, performance, attention to a female viewpoint, and diversity of cast. The effort is appreciated, but to a large degree it is compilation of the brief reviews found in their earlier mail order catalogs. The brief reviews are handy, but seem skimpy in a book-length format. A lengthy grouping of videos by interest (S/M, Feminist, Gay Male, etc.) or performer (Nina Hartly, Jenna Jameson, Seka, etc.) would help, as would some additional artwork. The text includes a brief history of adult films from the 1970s onward, so this title can definitely be considered educational. I would especially recommend this book to viewers who are curious about adult videos but don't want to spend all that time in the little room in the back of the video store.
Book Description
A new voice of the hip-hop generation speaks out about the reality of being a black woman in America today.
In this fresh, funky, and ferociously honest book, award-winning journalist Joan Morgan bravely probes the complex issues facing African-American women in today's world: a world where feminists often have not-so-clandestine affairs with the most sexist of men; where women who treasure their independence often prefer men who pick up the tab; and where the deluge of babymothers and babyfathers reminds black women who long for marriage that traditional nuclear families are a reality for less than 40 percent of the African-American population.

Understanding Chickenhead Speak.......2007-03-29
This book is a must for any 'older schooled' hip hop female heads worldwide. Morgan has a wonderful street/hip hop rhetoric that speaks to women who have a love for this thing called hip hop and life. Ladies pay attention to her words! She is rough, rugged raw and honest. Mama's, try this book out on your daughters, you may need to read it with them or break Morgans pearls of wisdom down for them as their heads bob in and out of the book either agreeing, disagreeing or shooting looks of confusion. She hits the chicken head directly on the head, there is a little bit of chicken head in every women, depending on how you define chicken head and your own personal beliefs pertaining to the f word.
THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ALL BLACK WOMEN .......2006-07-12
This book effortlessly addresses the many issues that have infiltrated the minds of black women in the hip hop culture...Products of absentee fathers, failed relationships, and questionable loyalty to our black men...Jane Morgan gives it to you straight with no chaser, not afraid to share her own experiences to let her audience know that she is not just an observer of the conflicting issues that leave many successful black women wondering "what the hell is wrong with me", but allows her experience to serve as a reference to the countless women like myself who seldom feel alone in their thoughts, their struggles and their quest to balance their independence in the face of sexism that has plagued the hip hop culture. Salut to Joan Morgan!!!!
Leslie's "Chickenhead" Review.......2006-03-04
I believe this book is recommended reading for anyone who loves Hip Hope and/or anyone who questions and/or struggles with the place of Black women in this mordern Hip Hop age, while staying true to Black Feminist thoughts. I found myself agreeing with Morgan, but mostly enjoying her fun and playful writing.
It's like this book was written just for me!.......2006-02-06
I like this book in that the author, Joan Morgan, does not try to act like her book has all the answers for everything. Instead, she just tries to offer her view and let you take what you can from it.
First she explores how feminism has traditionally been interpreted in Black culture, and how this limiting definition has evolved in the 21st century, especially as it relates to being a part of the hip-hop culture. She also explores how the history has influenced the current relations between black men and women, and their evolution into the strongblackwoman and endangeredblackman stereotypes. Joan also talks about the animosity between "chickenheads" and strongblackwomen, and encourages women to really be themselves.
I especially like how Joan explores the relationship between black women and their fathers. She provides a unique insight and solution for this dilemma.
This book is a timely message for "strong" black women who are looking for a way to absolve thier independence with their innate feminism.
Incisive and brutally honest.......2005-09-18
Joan Morgan's book is essential reading for anyone who wants to appreciate the Black woman in the age of hip hop. Not only does she talk about the 'bitch' and the 'ho' but she also talks about the dilemma of the 'strong black woman'. This SBW persona is something that's thrust upon us and most times it's like an albatross around your neck.
All young Black women should read this book because it gives us the validation we need in a world where validating the Black woman isn't something you see very often.

Customer Reviews:
A Strong Voice and Engaging Content.......2007-07-13
I am currently enjoying _Hunter's Choice_. Lake's voice shows a sincere respect for wild game and life in general. He does appear to take poetic license with some of his tales, but this is true for almost any author recalling first person accounts. I recommend this book to those interested in spending time on an African safari or wishing to further their perspective on living within poorly developed civilizations. Last, in reference to the GreybeardBushman's review, the two cartridge Lake mentions most often are the .303 and .270. Both cartridges have a long history and should be recognizable to any firearm neophyte.
Don't waste your money.......2006-02-10
This book is not good. Lake seems to have had little real hunting experience. His stories seldom match other hunter's experiences in Africa and his "knowledge" of firearms and ballistics is non existant. He invents calibres as often as he invents his experiences. But not only does Lake's own stories lack the ring of truth, his tales of others (such as Col.Patterson, whom he absolutes cans) are often figments of a twisted imagination. Lake's experiences of african animals are almost totally opposed to other African gun writers whom I admire and provide evidence to back their stories, as well as having their stories supported by other African legands.
Book Description
How an image-obsessed president transformed the way we think about politics and politicians.
To his conservative supporters in 1940s southern California, Richard Nixon was a populist everyman; to liberal intellectuals of the 1950s, he was "Tricky Dick," a devious manipulator; to 1960s radicals, a shadowy conspirator; to the Washington press corps, a pioneering spin doctor; to his loyal Middle Americans, a victim of liberal hatred; to recent historians, an unlikely liberal. Nixon's Shadow rediscovers these competing images of the protean Nixon, showing how each was created and disseminated in American culture and how Nixon's tinkering with his own image often backfired.
During Nixon's long tenure on the national stageand through the succession of "new Nixons" so brilliantly described hereAmericans came to realize how thoroughly politics relies on manipulation. Since Nixon, it has become impossible to discuss politics without asking: What is the politician's "real" character? How authentic or inauthentic is he? What image is he trying to project?
More than what Nixon did, this fascinating book reveals what Nixon meant. 30 photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Pulitzer Prize Historian: It's "The Best Analysis of Nixon".......2005-02-01
I was intrigued about this book when I heard it praised in a lecture by Walter Macdougall, the Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian. He published his lecture and what he said was, "What image will posterity nurture of Nixon? The best analysis is David Greenberg's Nixon's Shadow, published last year. Greenberg describes five Richard Nixons that beguile and perplex the American people."
But after reading it, I agree. Greenberg is younger than other historians who have written about Nixon and so he is, arguably, more objective. This book gives each point of view its due - those who hate Nixon, those who think he's an elder statesman, those who think he is a nutcase. It is as much a book about American political and social life and all of its strife and controversy in the years 1946-1974 (and after) as it is about Nixon himself. It doesn't just praise or bash Nixon - it explains WHY people praised or bashed Nixon.
Greenberg has really invented a new genre of history here. You might call it Rashomon Plus. He shows you Nixon from different perspective but then goes on to unpack these different images of Nixon and explain why they have all taken root in our political mindset.
A couple of the other posts apparently don't like Greenberg because he is liberal. That may be true, but this is not a liberal attack on Nixon, in fact he is more critical in many places of Nixon's critics than he is of Nixon. The "liberals" who came up with Tricky Dick are faulted for sneering at the middle class. And the radical left that attacked Nixon on Vietnam are faulted for being in the grip of conspiracy theories at times. The book gives Nixon's supporters more than their due. (In fact Walter Macdougall is a Conservative.) This is a highly orginal work of history.
A simplistic and narrow look at Nixon's image and legacy.......2004-11-27
David Greenberg's 'Nixon's Shadow' is an interesting and easy read but hardly complete. He is quick to label those who applaud aspects of the Nixon presidency `loyalists' and dismisses most of their interpretations as being partisan, naïve, or worse, comparing them to holocaust deniers. Furthermore, the author himself is in denial of FDR's, Truman's, Eisenhower's, Kennedy's, and LBJ's abuses of power. All of which made up the institution known as the imperial presidency that supposedly came crashing down after Watergate. Now, with that being said, Greenberg would probably contend that I believe Nixon is a victim and am a staunch Nixon loyalist...both of which are untrue. You cannot place such a diverse group of people into a labeled compartment.
Finally, Greenberg's admiration for Bob Woodward, which he tries to conceal, jumps out at the reader throughout the entire work. Since he worked for Woodward on another book, it is apparent that the controversial reporter, whose book 'The Final Days' has been discredited by most historians, influenced Greenberg's judgement. In fact, Greenberg thanks Woodward for his advice and assistance on Nixon's Shadow. The best historical works on Nixon will not be written until baby boomers who have a stake in the outcome, such as Bob Woodward, have passed on.
Tricky Dick unveiled?.......2004-02-26
Greenberg is a good chronicler of events and few occasions in Nixon's life, however incidental, is missed here. The book is long on details relating to the professional side of Nixon, but I was disappointed that there was a lack of personal anecdote within the covers of the book. Of course RN was an inscrutable, moody, paranoid and ultimately unknowable man, but I would have liked more material on Pat Nixon, as well as Tricia and Julie. Greenberg quotes copiously of Nixon's own self-serving memoirs but doesn't include much primary source material on Nixon as a human being.
The strong points are the chapters on Watergate and the gradual demise and destruction of RN as President. The ancillary characters of Watergate all get their just due: Halderman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean are described in sometimes sympathetic but occasionally, brutal detail. Reeves shows masterfully that Nixon dissembled and lied to the bitter end, not to the American people, but most disturbingly, to himself. It's well-written and full of detail, just don't expect much on Nixon the man. Otherwise, an enthusiastic thumbs up.
Complexity means we much search some more.......2004-02-08
Greenberg's work is the first I have read that expores the relationship between image and history in an interesting and inviting manner. I think one of the reasons that Nixon invites so much controversy was that he was a complex and contradictory man. He just does not seem to fit. Watergate destroyed him, but you have conservatives railing against him and liberals saying he did good work and vice versa. Greenberg attempts an overview of all these competing images and it is surprising how often the image being projected says more about the writer than Nixon himself. A very interesting book that deserve patient study.
Another Elitist "Does" Nixon.......2004-01-24
Here we go again.... It's become a "right of passage"
in the leftist community: if you want to be invited
to the best wine and sleeze... I mean cheese parties,
write a book smearing Nixon. Richard Nixon was
a complex human being, with both good and bad
sides to him, just like you and me. He had an
indelable impact on the development of the nation,
in both positive and negative ways. He is far too
much damned for his flaws, and far too little praised
for his successes. This book is just another stale
hatchet job, written by a hack who will be forgotten
as quickly as yesterday's toast; just another necrophiliac
having his way with a dead man. It's easier to
regurgitate leftist party hate speech than to actually
research the man's life and be honest about it.
Don't waste your money on this drek; it isn't
even good for toilet paper.
