Book Description
Since his first hand-written column at age 13, Matt Zee Zabitka has been associated with professional, scholastic and amateur sports. In more than 10,000 columns, Zee has shared his conversations with sports' greatest legends and stories of local heroes.
In this biography, read about Matt's early days behind the typewriter, his personal connection with Ty Cobb, his three-year stint as a radio show host and his experiences as a sought after toastmaster.
This book features scores of Zabitka stories and experiences and more than 35 columns, which Matt has selected--including interviews with Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Boom Boom Mancini, Ted Williams, Goose Goslin and Ralph Kiner, plus a special section spotlighting four Delawareans who played in the Negro National League.
There also are comments about Matt from Chuck Lewis, executive director of the Center for Public Integrity and former 60 Minutes producer; Sports Illustrated sportswriter Gary Smith; Pat Williams of the Orlando Magic and Randy White, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys.
Customer Reviews:
Not just sports..........2002-05-24
When I first started to read this book, I assumed it would be consumed with stories about sports. However, it turned out to be so much more. The stories Matt presents show the human side of these people we idolize and even more, why they deserve the recognition they get. Ed Okonowicz & Jerry Rhodes do an excellent job of bringing out the best Matt has to offer expounding on the virtues of the many famous sports figures he has had the pleasure of interviewing and how Matt worked his way up through the ranks to become one of Delaware's most famous and beloved sportswriters ever!

Book Description
"When everybody thinks alike, Everyone is likely to be wrong."
The ten words quoted above are, according to Humphrey B. Neill, a potent factor behind the economic booms and busts that blight our civilization. "The Mississippi Bubble," Hollands incredible "Tulipmania," and the New York stock market crash in 1929 are historic examples of disasters magnified and hastened by the pressure of mass opinion.
In exactly the opposite direction, in the years immediately following the close of World War II, ominous popular forecasts of business recession turned out to be wrong. What actually happened was-a business boom, not a business bust!
The reason is no mystery to anyone versed in the contrary way of thought-the practical application of the Neill Theory of Contrary Opinion. Today, this Theory-which began as one man's quest for a way to solve the puzzles of economic trends-has expanded enormously in both scope and significance.
In THE ART OF CONTRARY THINKING you will find the answer to a question increasingly asked by persons of affairs and influence: Contrary Opinion-what is it?. . .What will it do for me?
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best of Its Kind.......2006-12-02
Often, less experienced investors overlook the big picture topics such as macroeconmics and behavioral finance and focus on the investment book of the month which is invariably trash. This book was originally written many decades ago and the fact that it is still selling is a testiment to its quality.
When you look at al of the current investment books out in print, how many do you think will still be selling 40 years from now? Of course, back then, the publishing world was selective. Today, it focuses on publishing books about investing by big name preachers and sports legends or psychopaths with useless TV shows because they know people will buy them.
If you cannot appreciate this book then you have a very long way to go towards becoming a good investor. And if you are a good investor, this book is just another step towards your progression into a great investor.
an instant candidate for the round file.......2004-01-23
Another abysmal reprint of mind numbing market lore from days gone by. Not worth the time to open. Read Gustave le Bon and learn something useful. Line the birdcage with this.
Will this Book make you rich?.......2002-12-26
Or will it merely make you a cranky loner?
I read this book and have learned the value of consistent questioning the validity of my assumptions. I am involved in a business that is on the bleeding edge of technology. You must question and re-question everything on a frequent basis or you will find yourself yesterday's news. Will this book help you to develop the approach to be successful? YES. The rest is up to you.
Excellent book for budding contrarians.......1999-08-24
Mr Neill lays out in short, specific chapters, his arguments for why popular opinions often times turn out to be wrong, while the opposite, contrary opinion, would turn out to be corrrect. The historical examples he uses make one wonder if the "New Economy" of the 1990's is really just a precursor to the types of events seen in the late 1920's/early 1930's and the early 1950's, when prominent economists touted a New Era of prosperity (we all know what the happened afterwards).
Mr. Neill also cites past writers who analyzed the behavior of man, and how he gets caught up in the "herd". While sometimes getting off the subject, Mr. Neill lays out a clear framwork of how one assesses what the "popular" opinion is, and how to teach yourself not to get caught up in the herd and to think independantly.
A highly recommended book for those who wish to understand how contrary minds think, or for those who need a "refresher" (getting your mind out of a rut according to Neill).
Don't misunderstand the aim of the book!.......1999-08-04
The book is not about technical analysis of stocks. It's about a way of analyzing socio-economic trends. The way it was presented and also other books I read by the same author misleaded me.

Product Description
Ravaged during the Succession Wars and poorly governed by paranoid Chancellors, the Capellan Confederation has languished at the mercy of its more powerful neighbors for centuries. However, the time of Xin Sheng has arrived. A new birth. The devious and brilliant Sun-Tzu Liao leads his people into a glorious era of national pride and prosperity. Through subterfuge and warfare, he is driven to reclaim everything the Confederation has lost. BattleTech Field Manual: Capellan Confederation provides an in-depth look at the rising power of House Liao, including profiles on every Confederation regiment and the regiments of the newly conquered St. Ives Compact. Special rules reflecting the unique abilities of each regiment are included, along with new equipment and 'Mechs® exclusive to the Capellan Confederation.
Customer Reviews:
Xin Sheng... for the Capellan Confederation AND FASA!.......2000-07-31
The Capellan Confederation is going through a "Xin Sheng" movement, which means "Rebirth" in Chinese. Led by the wise and, surprisingly, sane Sun-Tzu Liao, the future is bright for the Capellan Confederation.
The Field Manual includes information on Capellan Confederation Units (including Warrior Houses and the Death Commandos), the St. Ives Compact and the Free Capella movement. Along with this are a load of new MW 3rd Edition things, like the St. Ives Compact affiliation, loads of new life paths (like Warrior House aspirant or Death Commando covert tour).
Plus, the new Stealth Armor, new missile munitions, new 'Mechs and 'Mech variants, and the Feng Huang Cruiser.
Buy this, even if you aren't a Cappie! Its so cool!
Cappellan Rising.......2000-07-25
Truly a must read. The Cappellan Confederation is stronger now than it had been since the devastating 4th Succession War. As the old ways are swept aside by the new Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao, the Cappellan state has used its recovery to take back what is theirs. With new weapons, ships and units that are better trained and motivated. The Cappellan Confederation is poised to reinvent itself as a new power. Although the manual did not discuss the impact of the Trinity Alliance with the Magistry of Canopus and the Taurian Concordat, the lack of information on the Maskirovka still could not blunt the book from giving the Confederation an impressive standing.
Where the Confederation will strike next is uncertain. With the Federated Commonwealth on the verge of Civil War, I am sure Sun Tzu will take advantage of the opportunity and exact his revenge.
This Field Manual will show you just what he has as his tools.
Perfect.......2000-05-08
This is a must-have for anyone who reads the Battletech novels. This catches you up on all the events that are going on that the authors don't write about in the novels, including the Death Commandos, who are a fearsome unit that get very little novel space.
Worthy addition.......2000-04-01
This addition to the field manual series is easily as good as the Draconis Combine book. A couple of things prevent a full 5 though. First, there's almost no information on the Mariskova(sp?) and there is a problem with the Marshall variant that supposedly uses the stealh armor(the problem being, in addition to not having stealth armor, it can't - not enough open crits due to ferro-fibrous and jump jets). The new tech is pretty extreme, but well balanced. Definitely a must buy.
A Welcome Release.......2000-03-29
Its nice to see FASA release a Field Manual on the CC. They always seem to be overlooked. The book is good at providing the in-depth information that you would expect from a Field Manual, but seems to be lacking some of the refinement that is present in the other House Field Manuals. A definite addition to any hardcore BT fan's library.

The Enlightened Auditor.......2001-11-24
As a recent college grad and Big Five new-hire, I found this book to be particularly helpful. For better or worse, my undergraduate course work had little focus on interviewing others. Using this book as a basic framework, I feel better prepared and organized when dealing with clients. I would consider this book a "must read" for individuals who are beginning to develop their diagnostic interviewing skills.

Book Description
The turbulent times of one of the world's most beautiful women.
Kate Moss entered the modeling scene with a force that belied her fragile frame. Discovered completely by chance at New York's JFK airport, Moss was propelled to international stardom with her waif-like figure and hauntingly seductive features, launching the infamous "heroin chic" look that dominated the modeling world of the nineties. But living the fast-paced life of an international sex symbol took its toll, and Moss spiraled down into the chaotic celebrity lifestyle of nonstop partying that landed her first in the tabloids, then in rehab. Here, for the first time, is the shocking true story of the passion and pain hiding behind one of the most famous faces in the world.
Customer Reviews:
The author..........2007-01-06
of this book is one of the greatest authors ever for unauthorized biographies of super models who used to be famous.
I read the book, it was very informative, I liked it.
Title should have been- Kate's Ex Boyfriend.......2006-03-26
This book should be called "Johnny Depp" because it is more about her relationship with him than about herself. I expected a biography on her life but it's about how this super-waif got famous and then those who made her famous turned against her. Then the rest of the book was about her unhappy relationship with Johnny Depp. I really like Kate Moss and would like to have read a book about her...not her ex-boyfriend.
so-so story of iconic model.......2006-03-22
my friends all just read this and we're all disappointed in it, maybe someone who knows less about kate moss would get more from it. it IS articulate and factual, and it's not that it's BAD writing, it just didn't give us anything new to talk about. i wish there were other biographies - even if totally sensationalized! - about kate moss out there!
my recommendation? maybe a good beach-time or bus-ride read, but don't expect anything revealing.
mediocre at best.......2006-03-21
My friends and I just read this as part of our new "Fashion-Group Book Club"...I didn't dislike it as much as they did, but it does give one reason to marvel at how much completely unspectacular writing and recycled bollocks make it to publication. It even came to us recommended so I'm surprised at how just-not-good it is. Even the pictures, the best part, are all ones I swear I've seen a million times before. So, if you're looking for photos of Kate, I remember a book that came out on her in the nineties, a lot more expensive of course, but that one was excellent. "Model of Imperfection": not recommended!
just not a very good book.......2006-03-20
my friends and i just chose this for our monthly fashion-oriented book club (we've previously enjoyed easily appropriate selections like "the devil wears prada", etc.) and were unanimously disapointed (they all are about to write their own reviews here, though). maybe this could be good for someone who isn't already a Kate fan, or has never heard such things about models doing drugs or being too skinny - like people who live in a bio-sphere or something. i guess i just expected more indepth info - like, how about a FREAKIN' INTERVIEW WITH KATE HERSELF! - from an author who ran "the web's most popular Kate Moss site" for like 5 years. some "fan"!

Book Description
With equal parts eloquence and urgency, common sense and patriotism, Kramer writes a concise history of AIDS and despairs that gays have become a tragic people: A lack of civic and political involvement even when faced with an increasingly powerful and hateful opposition. A sexual abandon so reckless that "we are murdering each other." A growing addiction to crystal-meth that defies logic. But Kramer offers gays a survival plan: "So many of Larry Kramer's messages to the younger generation are humanist messages, so old-fashioned in a callow age that we need Kramer to make them again," writes Naomi Wolf in her foreword. "Honor your dead. Take responsibility for yourselves. Grow up. Your lives have meaning-don't fuck and drug them away."
Customer Reviews:
Little book packs a BIG punch.......2005-10-27
Eloquent, empassioned speech from the accused "self-loathing homosexual," Larry Kramer is a loud and urgent wake up call to the gay community to take responsibility for themselves and also to rally against the right wing conservatives who undermine them through religion and politics. An important book & message in a small, unassuming package. Kramer most vividly hits the nail on the head when he reminds us that his so-called activism isn't special or noteworthy: we should ALL take part in fighting for equal rights. Our own and those of others.
TOO IMPORTANT TO IGNORE, YET TOO FLAWED TO ACCEPT WHOLESALE.......2005-08-19
I feel Larry Kramer's pain. Really, I do. I've seroconverted. I'm a recovered crystal meth abuser.
What I don't understand is his insistence (repeatedly!) that gay men are smarter, funnier, and otherwise superhuman compared to the rest of society. He invokes this mantra incessantly, which probably plays better live than in print. (The core of this book is a transcripted speech). In this important yet flawed work, it sounds as if Mr. Kramer is still trying to convince himself that his idealized vision of gaydom is accurate. It isn't. Clearly Kramer is one of gaydom's Ubermenschen, yet the gay mediocrities vastly outnumber the gay heroes, at least in today's gay America.
It's an eons-old belief that if you say something often and vigorously enough, then it will become so. This is at the foundation of magical thinking. At the positive end of the spectrum, we see this reflected in systems like Norman Vincent Peale's "The Power of Positive Thinking." At the other extreme, however, such magical thinking is dangerous and delusional, or at least counterproductive.
I agree with Kramer's assertion that feeding the hungry ghosts of hedonism is eating gay men alive. So be it.
All the wishing and insisting in the world cannot change the fact that thousands if not millions of gay Americans are selfish, ruthless, complacent cows. No amount of tantrum-throwing or consciousness-raising will goad such self-destructive adolescents in adult bodies out of their narcolepsy. Fine, I say.
Let them die off as soon as possible, then, and let us dispose of the bodies with as little fanfare or breast-beating as possible. Meanwhile, let us hasten to make space for the brightest and bravest, and throw our collective weight behind those cultural warriors. Stop wasting precious time and energy trying to convince a pack of losers of the error of their ways. Instead, as Kramer does imply, let's establish more competitions, scholarships, endowments, and other gay institutions designed to foster and reward real achievers.
No amount of wishful thinking or screaming at a spiritually sick and twisted man will get him into recovery until he is willing to take the necessary step of raising his hand, asking for help, and making a real commitment to the ongoing task of change and inner growth.
Evolve or perish. Same as it ever was, same as it will ever be.
So please, Mr. Kramer, stop repeating yourself, especially when you're making sweeping generalizations about gaydom. It sounds like you're praying to a lost god (or, more precisely, the ghosts of Gay Liberation past, may they rest in peace), and that simply doesn't support your case -- or, ultimately, your cause.
The Real "But" Buster.......2005-08-03
Larry Kramer's entire speech was (yet again) another call to action for gay men. (The speech reminded me of the last lines of Spike Lee's "School Daze." I hope I got the title correct.)
Kramer's speech clearly posits that gay people of every color need to realize that another "ice age" is here. Our president, his handlers, and about 54 million other people are doing everything they can to insure our extinction. We can be 21st century wooly mammoths or we can participate in our own survival. We can flourish if we work for it.
We need to start thinking with our brains. Once that happens, other organs will take care of themselves.
I purchased multiple copies of the speech. I'm giving it to friends.
If you don't see yourself somewhere in Kramer's speech, READ IT AGAIN!
Read This Speech!.......2005-05-15
Since the very earliest days of the AIDS epidemic Larry Kramer has often been the loudest and sometimes it seems almost the only, lonely member of the U. S.'s gay community screaming out against what he perceives as the injustice of the government's handling of the AIDS problem. At 69, he shouts once again. I read his speech twice-- it's short and to the point; sadly he's right about most of what he says. On them: about the cabal or right wing conspiracy-- remember, people laughed at Hillary Clinton for using that term-- Mr. Kramer gives ample evidence that she was right, quoting Bill Moyers and others. The numbers are frightening beyong belief. The top 1 percent of wealth holders control 39 percent of total household wealth in the U. S. The inequality gap in this country is the highest in the industrialized world. Only two percent of the many billions of dollars Congress approved for Africa and around the world has actually left Washington some four years later. "Moral values," if we don't know it, we should, is a code word that means us. That's why Bush was reelected. Conclusion: Those in power are happy to see us die.
About us: Mr. Kramer's words to the gay community are just as harsh. We are still killing ourselves with drugs and having unprotected sex 25 years into the worst epidemic the world has ever known. (At the beginning of his speech he mentions two friends, one in his middle age who has just tested positive for the virus and the other, also in his middle age, who has become addicted to crystal meth. The younger gay people have no heroes to follow and no interest in learning about their history. They (we, or most of us) are unwilling to stand up and fight those in power. That is our tragedy.
Mr. Kramer-- God bless him-- with the fervor of an Old Testament Prophet and taking no prisoners, in his rage is as outrageous as ever. Some of his observations: Ronald Reagan is responsible for more deaths than Hitler. Ed Koch, Mayor of New York City, when the first cases were reported there in 1981, did nothing, according to Kramer, and is one of three persons whose behavior is the reason the AIDS plague was "allowed to happen." He also asks the pertinent question: what would happen if Mary Cheney wanted to teach?" Dr. Anthony Fauci is the only "true AIDS hero" in the entire government. Finally, George Washington was gay.
No less than five times in his speech, Mr. Kramer opines that gay people are better and "smarter and more talented and more aware" than other people. He gives no evidence to support his conclusion. He's wrong on that one. But he is right on another point: "We are human beings as much as they are, and their God is the same as everyone's else's God and He simply cannot be allowed to be as punishing as they are requiring Him to be."
Read this very short but so relevant speech.
Classic Kramer.......2005-05-12
Panties all across the gay ghettos of America are rapidly forming into wads over Larry Kramer's newest diatribe, The Tragedy of Today's Gays. Kramer, famous for not holding back even a microscopic amount of vitriol, is doing what I have long been wanting to see - he's takin' the gays to task for their behavior, both past and present, and the lack of leadership in the gay community.
My favorite anti-Kramer argument has already surfaced - that he should shut up because he's giving right-wingers ammunition in their fight against us. Right. They certainly couldn't go into any gay bar, log on to any gay website or even talk to Joe Gay and figure out for themselves that the gay 'community' is adrift in a sea of narcissistic, hedonistic and ultimately self-destructive behavior. We do such a good job of keeping that all under wraps, right? If it weren't for him tellin' tales out of school, we'd look like angels to the rest of the world, right? Right.
Larry Kramer may not have oodles of tact or the best ability to persuade without beating people over the head while screaming at them, but his argument is based largely upon his belief that there is no more time left to be polite. He argues (correctly, in my opinion) that gay men are too immature to police themselves. Drug abuse is skyrocketing, apathy about AIDS has led to a spike in unsafe sex and rampant transmission of STD's - and not just HIV - and politically we are weaker now than we ever were before the dawn of Will & Grace and Ellen.
What's the disconnect? I would think it's probably that there is a large portion of the gay community that feels like we've already 'arrived' from a civil rights perspective. Gay bashing is down, most people haven't gotten fired or been kicked out of a home because of their sexuality. It's exacerbated by the fact that the emotional maturity of the average gay man is in the toilet. We loathe ourselves, and we loathe each other.
Perhaps my experience in life is unique, but I've never seen a straight person be as inherently evil or ostracizing as the gays are to each other. We judge each other based on completely irrelevant and superficial criteria, we alienate based on looks, age, genitalia, income and a host of other things that have absolutely nothing to do with who we are as people. But when criticized from the outside, we lash out and tell those who disagree with us that they had damn well better love us unconditionally and not judge. Hypocrisy?
I applaud Mr. Kramer - not necessarily because of the things he has to say, but because he has the courage to say them. He is essentially holding up a mirror and forcing the gay men of today to look into it - it's not his fault we don't like what we see. I hope that once the collective masses stop whining about being judged, they'll actually sit back and think, realizing that as a community we are actually moving backwards in our quest for equality, and we're hurting ourselves and each other in the process at unprecedented levels.

Book Description
The River Scene is a uniquely stimulating guide to the appreciation and preservation of rivers. In this highly illustrated account, Sylvia Haslam presents a new scheme for the evaluation of river quality which can be used by a wide range of users, from amateur conservationists to water management professionals. The book presents an overview of river ecology, looking first at the natural environment - river structure, classification and pollution. This is followed by a discussion of the cultural environment, the importance of which is often overlooked: the history, archaeology, and social and legal contexts of rivers. Dr Haslam is a leading international authority on rivers and their vegetation. By understanding the natural and cultural environments of rivers and applying the methods she describes, our awareness and appreciation of these beautiful resources can be greatly enhanced, and their conservation for the future aided.
