Book Description

The scene is set in this literary history as five children destined to become monarchs of Hawaii are placed into the hands of Calvinist missionaries in a resdential school. The damage done to the personalities and self-concepts of these future monarchs by the indoctrination (rather than education) of the Euro-American zealots causes difficulties that come to light when the children eventually take power in the Hawaiian monarchy, which under their rule, is overthrown in 1893. The facts surrounding the collapse of Hawaiian independence are woven into the story of two modern day Hawaiians, Keono Kane--a computer specialist--and his girlfriend, Tamara Noguichi. The lovers are brought back in time against their will by the akua, or ghost, of Queen Lili'uokalani. The akua forces them to view the Queen's life and find the reasons that resulted in her reign being overthrown so that her spirit can free itself from it's earthly bounds. The result is a lively adventure story that takes place in both modern and past Hawaii.

2 out of 5 stars Rowena's review.......2000-05-15

Author's interpretation of the possible outcome of the effects of the missionary teaching on young Hawaiian Ali'i is filled with Aloha for the people and history of Hawaii. Unfortunately, the the portrayal of thought patterns and situations are NOT within the Hawaiian way of life, beliefs or thinking patterns. Her end analysis is acceptable and probable, her description of means is not.

3 out of 5 stars Good, informative and interesting.......2001-06-02

A well written account of the life and career of one of the greatest modern tennis players - Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Though not written with direct contact form Sanchez-Vicario, the authors manage to take a great many interviews and quotes from the champion herself and many of those around her and turn it into an informative book. The book deals primarily with Arantxa's tennis career and the many results and highlights of it, along with her personality and her fighting spirit which took the game to new levels. A great book for any fan and a good job from the first time authors.

              Book Description

A marvelously original and informative book about the ever-changing American language that offers surprising insights into why we talk the way we talk.

With dazzling wit and acuity, three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Leslie Savan dissects contemporary language to discover what our most popular idioms reveal about America today. She traces the paths that words and expressions travel from obscurity to ubiquity. She describes how “real people” create slang and colorful phrases (I don’t think so; Bring it on!; Dude; Outside the box); how the media, advertising, politics, and business mine the language for these phrases in order to better sell products, ideas, and personalities; and how these expressions, now that they’ve hit the big time, then burst out of our mouths as “celebrity words,” newly glamorous and persuasive.

Words like Duh! and Whatever have become such an indispensable form of communication that they’re replacing our need to articulate any real thought. Whether it’s George Tenet convincing George W. Bush that finding WMD in Iraq would be “a slam dunk” or Microsoft telling you that its latest software is a “no-brainer,” this bright, snappy language affects us all–up close and personal.

Smart, dynamic, and great fun, Slam Dunks and No-Brainers is–for everyone who loves the mysteries and idiosyncrasies of language–well, a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite and it rocks.......2006-12-18

Okay all you ignorami out there, listen up. So you've had a bad hair day and the axis of evil is on your case. You've been there and done that big time. You've kicked Major Buttski, and whatever, and it only hurts when you laugh (your foot, that is). You've seen men and women behaving badly and you've been behind the eight ball. Despair not. Get a life not a library card because the real deal lingo is going down in your part of town--well, in this book.

Descriptive grammarians unite! Push those old fuddy-duddies out the door. This voluptuous volume of edible prose is da bomb! It is finger lickin good to linguists and lexicographers and cultural anthropologists on the make. And all you old stuffy school marms and proscriptive grammarian types, "Don't even THINK about telling me I don't THINK so." (Actually a title of one of the chapters in this oh so delectable wordsmith's book of manna from heaven.)

              All right, enough.

When as an undergraduate I first heard Bob Dylan--well, when I first parsed his lyrics--it occurred to me that this man sings in cliches! (I'm resisting a "duh" here.) This is NOT poetry was what my English major mind thought. And then when I was one and twenty (I was so much older then) it occurred to me that Dylan was using not words themselves to make up his poetic lines, but groups or phrases of words, of cliches, the words we all use and hear day in and day out, and THAT was the basis of his lyrical poetry.

Wow, talk about your enlightenments! Anyway, what culture critic and word spinner deluxe Leslie Savan has done in this book is something akin to that. She has taken the phrases of pop language (as she calls it) and turned an examination of those phrases into a lexicographer's search for the derivation of terms. As all lovers of dictionaries know, you can learn a lot about history, sociology, psychology and such by just studying the dictionary. Well, Savan has learned a lot about the pop culture from studying its expressions. There is a psychology behind "yo, dude!"; there is a sociology contained in "like, you know, make my day"; there is a biology behind the f-word; there is some economics in "do the math"; and some history in "plausible deniability."

One of the reasons I am able to grab hold of these pop phrases so easily is that Savan has provided an index that, well, lists them (or most of them) by page number. Because Savan is an expert on advertising and the media, having written a column on the same for The Village Voice for many years, she just naturally has bouncing around in her head all matter of cliches and pop sounds from the powerful mavens of media who try to tell us what to buy, how to dress and what to think.

But she doesn't stop there. One of the chapters is on "digital talk," the words and phrases, "initialisms" and acronyms from emails and emessaging, from computerland and the Web, like "fresh, squeezed words," e.g., IMHO, LOTFLMAO, OMG, wtf? (caps optional or used WHEN SHOUTING!), the now ancient and soon to be forgotten WYSIWYG, and the fifteen minutes of fame tag, J. Lo.

Another chapter is on black pop that becomes white pop that becomes "said all over"--Ebonics and hip hop and whassup with that--you know what I'm saying? There are footnotes at the end of the book and a bibliography that includes people like Steven Pinker, Desmond Morris and Mark Twain, but not George Orwell. How he would have loved this book! Ditto for H. L. Mencken and Ambrose Bierce.

Some reviewers have tried to trivialize Savan's work, but look at it this way: her publisher is Alfred A. Knopf and you know they are as high brow and deadly serious as publishers can get.

Bottom line: this is an important work on American culture and language not to be missed, and a lot of fun to read.

              2 out of 5 stars Hel-LO!.......2006-08-31

I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I just found a lot of it to be, like, lame! Savan has some good points but she repeats herself so much, drowning every sentence in 'pop words' that offset other 'pop words' reminding her of even more 'pop words', that large parts of the book are a convoluted mess!
Much of the ground has been covered elsewhere, in greater detail, and in less headache-inducing style!
I did find some interesting nuggets, but had to skim through a lot of tedious material to get there. Fans of language should check it out if they're curious. People who can do without socio-political commentary should skip it.

2 out of 5 stars This book is a No-Brainer.......2006-04-05

If the author spent a few hours deciding on a clear purpose for this book she might have had something more readable. As it is, this reads as if she has diarrhea of the word processor and is in automatic (and unthinking) mode. She starts out the book with complaints about cliches but changes her mind when she admits that she uses them. Then she switiches to a tirade against buzz phrases, isn't really sure what they are, comes up with a new term - pop words -gives a definition that is as clear as mud, starts complaining again about cliches, and just blathers on and on. The book ends up being nothing but a sarcastic complaint against any words or phrases that get on HER nerves - and she seems easily irritated and hypersensitive. Well, if I was writing a book, my complaint would be about authors who have no clear focus and who think that the rest of us are interested in their pet peeves. If you are a great wit, you can get away with that. If not, you come off as a prematurely testy codger bellyaching about those uneducated mobs out there who don't know how to coin a new simile at the drop of a hat. Tedious, unfunny stuff. Don't waste your time.

              5 out of 5 stars What a Fun Read!!!!.......2006-01-15

Not only did I delight audibly in Ms Savan's original thinking and many colorful stories, so did my 13-yr-old son! He actually picked up and read this book which he found on my desk by accident. He thought it was "very interesting." Who but a 13-year-old would understand better the pollution and dumbing down of today's popular language? Leslie Savan is one-of-a-kind and I'm happy to have discovered her again after her years writing at the Voice. She is at her absolute best in this clever, highly entertaining, and thought-provoking book. You go girl!!

5 out of 5 stars This is your brain on pop words.......2005-12-19

Leslie Savan's new book on language gives you countless and sudden insights into the linguistic water in which we are all swimming almost all of the time. It is a difficult assignment to make a fish conscious of the water, but Savan's pulls it off, and very entertaininly. Time and again, you'll remember being in a kind of conversation, or "simulation of conversation" that Savan describes. It may sound sorta hi-falutin, but Savan brings it all down to earth over and over again as you think to yourself "oh I say that phrase" or "i haven't thought of that connection," etc. This is a perfect book for word hounds everywhere. And for all of its fun, it serves a serious purpose: bringing reality back to the words we say.

A great book for anyone interested in mazes or puzzles of any kind.Mazes can be found throughout the numerous books on puzzles but also throughout the worlds of art, architecture, history and literature. This book covers a bit of everything from the history that shows mazes appear as far back as 3,600 BC.It's likely that one would find them in any writings , drawings or art in any civilization, religions or structures from the days man first took a tool in his hand. They vary from the simplist to the most complicated and elaborate. Some are as small as a thumbnail while some are acres in size. This book is filled with beautiful photograps of some of the world's most famous mazes as well as drawings of them to solve. The solutions are also included.Another very good feature of the book is that they have come up with a way to 'do' these mazes over and over again. Even if one is not inclined to solve all these maze ;it is still an excellent book to read and enjoy the beauty that has been created in this art form.In addition to the contents of the book, it's physical construction has been well thought out and executed.
A first class book in every way.

I have been interested in labyrinths for the past few years. Most of the books I own have black and white images, if that. This book has BEAUTIFUL full-colored images of mazes and labyrinths from all over the world. The type of labyrinths/mazes that you can find photographed include baskets, cathedral floors, lawns/hedges, paintings, mosaics, pottery, rock formations and more. What makes this book so good, is that not only can you get a great image of these works of art, but you can also try to solve them with the provided erasable marker and clear film overlay. This book even shows you some step-by-step instructions on how to try and learn to draw some labyrinths/mazes on your own. I would highly recommend this book to people of all ages. It is also a great starter book for anyone who likes to collect information on labyrinths. I don't think people will be disappointed with this book when they receive it.

I have not worked completely through this book, but have found it to be very readible with sound information. Everything does not apply to my situation (very small organization), but the concepts are clear.

5 out of 5 stars Proven approach and a detailed roadmap.......2002-08-26

This book, like all of Ms. Cassidy's work, is straightforward, to the point and reads like a blueprint for success. In particular, she frames the objectives (Where are we? Where do we need to be? What's the best way to get there?), then gives guidance on answering the questions and a realistic and actionable plan for meeting the objectives.

Her approach is focused on business needs and linked to the overriding imperatives and strategies of that domain. She begins by discussing the business drivers and why strategic planning is necessary, then provides a phased approach to the strategic planning process itself. This approach captures the business and technical "as-is" and "to-be" pictures, performs a gap analysis, and a plan for going from "as-is" to "to-be". On the surface this appears to be common sense, but the devil is in the details, and she provides the details. That is what makes this book so valuable. More importantly, it's obvious that she has extensive experience in strategic planning because all of the subtle issues are addressed, and her advice is on the mark every step of the way.

Of course, one of the big issues in strategic planning is the question of what capital investments to make in software, either as an upgrade or entire replacement of company-critical systems, that align to the slected strategy. This book shows how to select the best fit to meet strategic plans, and how to capture the true costs and support requirements as a matter of due diligence.

This book is, in my opinion, one of the better ones on the topic, and is only exceeded by her most recent book titled "A Practical Guide to Planning for E-Business Success: How to E-enable Your Enterprise". That book contains substantially the same approach as this one, but is aligned to e-business. Regardless of which book you choose, you'll find Ms. Cassidy's approach to reflect best practices, and the advice interspersed throughout the book to be invaluable.

I work for a large East Coast Utilities company. Our project team was charged with producing an "Information Systems Strategic Plan". A daunting task given multiple platforms, architectures, and technologies. Our team was experienced and knowledgeable, but lacked process direction.

We turned to Anita Cassidy's book and found it amazingly helpful. We found ourselves referring to it many times during the planning and implementation stages of the project.

Her book provides an authoritative reference which allowed us to cut total project time by 25%. We didn't need to argue about process, methodology, or research strategy. We went with Cassidy's suggestions and we were more than pleased with the results.

Cassidy's simple, straightforward approach is easy to follow, meaningful, and very applicable. If you have the task of assembling an IS Strategic Plan, then this book will give you the step-by-step methodology to do so.

              Nice job Anita!

5 out of 5 stars Right on Target! Great Examples for Constructing an IS Plan!.......1999-06-06

My graduate IS/IT Strategic Planning course did not assign a text book on writing up an IS/IT Strategic Plan, so I had to track one down on my own. After reviewing at least a dozen books, I found Cassidy's to be the most practical with multiple and varied examples of the critical ideas, sections & components found within an IS Strategic Plan. There are many great examples of Mission and Vission statements and detailed sections on ROI analysis, executive summaries and the entire planning process, etc. The graphics & exhibits are easily understood and well organized, as is the entire book. In fact, other students actually purchased this book during the semester at my recommendation and our professor is looking to add this book as required reading for the course! It is especially good for those who have little to no experience putting together an entire IS plan from ground zero. Thorough, to the point, terrific examples and extremely well organized is how I would sum up this book. It will serve both students and IS/IT professionals extremely well.

              Book Description

Mark 947 chronicles one woman’s progress from spirit to flesh, a literal transubstantiation by force of will. Born a boy to loving but religious parents in the rural heartland of Tennessee, Calpernia Addams found her way on an unlighted path from forbidden dreams to fulfillment as a scholar, showgirl and eventually, as a woman.

Sultry stage siren by night, intellectual chameleon by day, she worked her way to the top of Nashville’s underground entertainment scene without ever succumbing to drugs, alcohol or bitterness, and through it all never lost her heart. When love walked into her new life in the form of a handsome young Army private, it seemed everything had at last come together. Then at the pinnacle of her career, as she was crowned Tennessee Entertainer of the Year in front of hundreds of adoring fans, her love was murdered in his sleep sixty miles away by bigoted fellow soldiers, sparking a national controversy that resonates still.

Whether ablaze in the dazzle of the spotlight or haunting the woods of Tennessee in flannel and pigtails, Calpernia lives her life with the humor and spirit of a woman who can face anything and still move forward with hope intact.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-06-26

A fantastic account of one woman's journey to find herself. Calpernia Addams shares her inner pain and strength, as she struggles with religious intolerance, sexuality, and gender conflict. Her childhood with a "fire and brimstone" church reminded me so much of my own childhood it was almost as if it were my story and not someone else's. I remember church camp....it was my story too.

Great book from a talented author and actress.

5 out of 5 stars "Womanhood was a state of being.".......2005-09-07

Calpernia Addams came to national attention when she was named as the transgender lover of Private Barry Winchell. Winchell, who suffered continuous harassment for his relationship with Calpernia, was brutally beaten to death by another soldier at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The excellent film "Soldier's Girl" is the story of their relationship. "Mark 947: A Life Shaped by God, Gender, and Force of Will" is Calpernia Addams' courageous memoir describing her childhood, her identification with the female sex, her decision to become female, and her relationship with Barry Winchell.

Calpernia was born a male and named Scott--the eldest of three children born to a fundamentalist couple in rural Tennessee. A strict, barren upbringing was alleviated by a progressive high school--although Calpernia's parents, unfortunately, curtailed this. Unable to connect as a male, Scott drifted into the navy and served as a medic in the first Gulf War. Finally discovering the courage to live as a woman, Calpernia moved to Nashville, attended university, and became a nightclub entertainer.

A large portion of the book concentrates on Calpernia's narrow, suffocating childhood. Raised to accept strict doctrine, somehow Calpernia was capable of independent thinking, and instead of sinking into her family's way of life, she reasoned her way through feelings of alienation and lack of identity as a male. Ironically Calpernia's strict upbringing allowed her to discover a niche in the Navy, as many of the restrictions placed upon her as a teenager covered her lack of machismo when attending boot camp. Calpernia states that her "religious upbringing had allowed me sanctuary" from engaging in raucous behaviour. She describes the agony of being surrounded by men, wanting their attention, and affection, but being afraid of saying the wrong thing. The memoir is quite detailed when discussing moments and pivotal events that influenced Calpernia's life. While the author is not a professional writer, the writing is good. In one passage, the description of a dead body manages to convey the incident's powerful impact on the author, and it's clear that this incident helped energise Calpernia into making the decision to become female--displacedhuman

              4 out of 5 stars The voice of a Woman's heart.......2005-03-02

Calpernia's writing style is very eloquent. Her words paint vibrant pictures of thought and feeling seldom found in an autobiography. She made me smell the candles, feel the air, see the swirling leaves and feel the pounding of cold rain. Fortunately, she never made the leaves or the rain 'dance' anywhere (oh, just read the book and you'll know what I'm refering to). As if I were in her very skin, I could see, taste and smell the church food and festivities, the clubs, even Barry. I could easily recognize the voice of a woman's heart crying out for validation, for love... for justice.

Despite her well-honed use of words and description, I felt that the story languished in the day-to-day world of her childhood without offering the clear contrast of the gender and sexual orientation sruggle going on inside of her. In many ways it seemed like any other novel about growing up in the south. Thereafter, the book takes us through snapshot moments of her life without clear relevance or continuity in the context of the whole story. The final "epilogue" chapter was more like just another chapter instead of an actual epilogue. I felt that the book was a bit herky-jerky: laborously long in some places and rushed in others and no real sense of tying some things together. It was much like getting out a photo album and talking about this moment and that moment over coffee. Thus, I gave it 4 stars.

That said, I cannot impart upon the prospective reader enough what an important work this is and a worthy read. It will take you on an emotional journey that brings you to the center of your own heart, if you have one.

5 out of 5 stars A well-written book by an obviously brilliiant artist!.......2003-08-06

What blew me away upon reading this is how superlative this is compared to other TS autobiographies. Calpernia is a seriously gifted writer! She has written here possibly one of the best autobiographies I have ever read, TS or not. Her prose is beautiful, her memories flow logically for the reader, and the whole book is laced with humor. She conveys her feelings very clearly, without falling into cliche. She also does not attempt to whitewash her life. It is all here, even the parts that are clearly the most painful to her.

If you decide you have to read one TS autobiography in your life, this is the one you should read! Calpernia has written a truly amazing literary journey! This book also stands up as great art. I mean that. I think that she should continue to write books. She is gifted, and could write great novels.

              5 out of 5 stars A poignant view of a fascinating life.......2003-02-26

As a transsexual woman, Calpernia Addams has walked an incredible path. Aside from her strict Fundamentalist upbringing, she was dragged into a national spotlight after her boyfriend was murdered in a 1999 "gay" bashing on an Army base. Such is the range of experience so touchingly recounted in Calpernia's autobiography Mark 947.

In the bible the book of Mark, chapter 9, verse 47 begins with "And if thine eye offends thee, pluck it out," a dramatic metaphor for the sex change that she'd wanted for many years. The title of this work is a jab at the biblical scripture she was bombarded with from early childhood. To escape this strict world, and her own inexplicaple feelings, Calpernia ran away to join the Navy, ending up in Desert Storm. Later, on a lonely outpost on an Aleutian island, she becomes increasingly aware she does not fit in as a guy.

The remainder of the story details an ongoing awakening into her sexuality and gender, from her first steps in "drag" to her crowning as Tennessee's Entertainer of the Year. Sweetly yet tragically, these pages introduce and then all too quickly take away the love of her life, Army PFC Barry Winchell who loved her as his girlfriend. The final chapters vividly portray her anguish, the dazed nightmare of the murder trial, and her beginning steps into acceptance.

This is an amazing and touching first book, one that I would recommend to anybody.

                Book Description

Perhaps no other field of military science is more misunderstood than logistics. Yet the means of supply, transportation, maintenance, and a variety of other supporting services frequently affect the daily lives of soldiers, the tactics of divisions, and the strategies of nations. Battles have been won, and wars have been lost, at least in part because of an army's ability to sustain itself in combat.

U.S. Army Logistics, 1775-1992: An Anthology is designed to introduce to the soldier and the student of logistics a variety of topical selections that cover over 200 years of our army's history. In many cases, the reader may be intrigued by how often problems were repeated in different conflicts. There were remarkable similarities in transportation problems during the Mexican War and World War II, and comparable supply management difficulties arose during the Korean War and the war in Vietnam. How military personnel dealt with these issues and what successive generations learned from these experiences provide valuable insights for logisticians and commanders today.

The selections for this anthology were made by Lt. Col. Charles R. Shrader, who was eminently qualified for this task. Blending his years of experience as an Army logistician and historian, Colonel Shrader has assembled a unique collection of essays that cover both the breadth and depth of Army logistics from the frozen hills of Valley Forge to the burning deserts of Southwest Asia. For the commander and the logistician, the soldier and the student, here is a book that will stimulate thought, encourage discussions, and provide perspective to an essential element of military science.

The Assembly of God Tabernacle in Decatur, Georgia, has succeeded at doing what most institutions in America have failed at--achieving full integration. White parishioners who thought of blacks in the worst terms in the past have now decided that all believers--black and white--are going to the same heaven, so they might as well get used to it here on earth. After a black man hugs an elderly white woman, he says, "Man, 30 or 40 years ago I would have been hung for just touching this lady." While there is genuine affection between many of the parishioners, all the complex feelings and questions that plague the races at the turn of the century are being reckoned with here. Is integration a blessing or a sellout, blacks wonder. Is it ever acceptable--or even helpful--to make race the issue, or must a preacher and his congregation always feign colorblindness? What are the burdens of blending in, and are they worth it? And will this last, or is the church just like so many neighborhoods--enjoying a fleeting moment of integration on the way to becoming predominantly black? These are just some of the touchy issues explored in this remarkable and eye-opening book.

Originally published as a series in The New York Times, the 15 stories are the outcome of a yearlong examination by a team of reporters who managed to overcome the taboo of discussing private attitudes toward race and uncover the daily experience of race relations in schools, friendships, sports, popular culture, worship, and the workplace. The result is a wide range of intimate portraits, from bringing up slavery in the Old South, to drug cops reacting silently to the Amadou Diallo verdict, to the making of the HBO special The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood.

Race clearly remains a source of misunderstanding and alienation, but there are also heartening signs of reaching out, reconciliation, and even unity. This book is an important leap into an area most fear to tread, yet also yearn to change. --Lesley Reed

                          Book Description

Whether its the merger of a white church with a black church in the South, the hip-hop dreams of a suburban white teenager, or the struggles of a biracial partnership in a high-tech start-up, race relations continue to permeate American lives. Powerful yet intimate, the stories in this volume present the real voices of America speaking out on the impact of race in their daily lives. The result of a virtually unprecedented commitment of talent and resources, the New York Times landmark series How Race Is Lived in America captured the cultural landscape of the nation in provocative, eye-opening articles following people from all backgrounds and every corner of society. The stories in the series are enhanced by additional commentary from the writers, photographers, and editors; results and analysis of an extensive Times poll on attitudes about race; and selected reader responses. Together they offer a highly personal yet panoramic view of real-world conflict and aspiration.

I had the opportunity to read some of the testimonials and accounts that appear in this book when they were first published as a series in the New York Times. When I read the book, I had the chance to enjoy a few narratives that I had missed. This book makes a great effort to put into focus the dynamic of race relations in America. All the stories are touching and beautifully written. The reader is not led into any specific conclusion; once you read all the stories you will have a better picture and will be able to judge where you stand pertaining race relations. I identified myself with more than one of the subjects of these stories. Congratulations to the New York Times for this momentous documentary that surely will make history. This collage of independant stories revealed the courage of ordinary Americans doing extra-ordinary things. In each of these stories, the indiviuals challenged their own personal beliefs, and cultural and ethnic diffrences, to come together and build alliances that transcended race. This is the ideal of what true Americans are and the values of real patriotism and heroism foiled up into an amazing hardcover, that all peace-loving humanitarians should own. The NY TImes and Joseph Lelyveld, You get 2 thumbs up for this incredible work of art. My gratitude to you,
                          Sincerly, Malik Padgett

                          5 out of 5 stars great read.......2002-06-10

How race is lived in america deals with the issues of race that we are still dealing with today and how race still does matter. The collection of new york times pieces deals with how race is played out. From race being a straign on frienships (a group of inter-racial friends making the transition from middle school to high school and two cuban friends-one white and one black-coming to america and facing different challenges) to race in the work place (looking at race relations at a tyson factory in north carolina to a black-white owned internet company). The book gives a rather good detail of where are in terms of race now.

                          5 out of 5 stars Can't put down.......2002-03-11

I picked this up last night and couldn't put it down. Not only that, but after each chapter I just stopped and thought for a minute or two. Just incredible.
                          Get it and read it.

                          4 out of 5 stars Almost there........2001-12-10

I read this for class the past semester and thought that while there are some really incredible circumstances discussed,(White quarterback, growing up multi-racial, and minority public servants) that some people were noticeably left out. Native Americans received a further blow of marginalization. (they were mentioned once as something of a prop) Also, the diversity among Black and Asian communities was very much ignored. I must say that it's obvious who the writers/editors are marketing towards in their readership, because many of the arguments continue some monolithic dialogues that haven't changed in 20+ years. Going into a work like this will take some serious analysis on the part of the reader to notice what I'm talking about, as it is written with an almost indistinguishable slant. The work has great potential for use as a teaching tool, but focus should remain on analysis rather than taking work verbatim.

                            Book Description

Zupko and Laures have written a unique account of the environmental history of medieval Italian towns. The authors examine the law codes of towns in northern and central Italy in order to learn what individual citizens wanted their town and its environment to be. Straws in the Wind demonstrates that medieval legislators had a vision of what the ideal urban quality of life should be and that they enacted laws designed to shape the city environment in accordance with this ideal.
