When True Heroes Appear Forgotten -- Then What?.......2005-08-07

I was simply window shopping at Amazon.com and came upon one of my favorite books of all time. To my dismay, it appears, well, frankly as if we all abandoned this monumentally courageous man. Because of Casey Martin's decision (not an easy one) to take on The PGA in federal court (and won after a long legal battle) for the right to use a golf cart during competition (due to an extremely painful and disabling degenerative condition since birth), he paved the way for countless differently-abled to be included in our society from sea to shining sea. I know of no one personally who ever stood against a fierce firestorm-of-a- legal-battle (while trying to compete in golf) to show not only what is right but what a real man is. I still remember you and your story from this book, Casey Martin! And if America forgets the real heroes like yourself, then where in heck are we going? Oh right...the video store or movie theatre to see someone playing-the-hero, who is just a name-on-a-stage.

The slasher film genre got its start in the early 1960s when acclaimed filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock and Michael Powell made provocative mainstream film such as Psycho and Peeping Tom, but it is most associated with the late 1970s and the releases of Halloween and Friday the 13th. A welcome addition, but pretty cold-blooded........2004-02-08

After the entertaining but disappointing 'Going To Pieces' I was thrilled to pick this Slasher reference up, hoping it would be a deeper, more thorough examination of my beloved sub-genre. What a let down! Long-winded synopses, terse criticisms, and several glaring omissions made for a boring, frustrating read. Why in the world would one devote most of their text to lengthy, uninvolving plot descriptions when they have the chance to either sing a film's praises or unleash a scathing criticism? Rockoff's 'Pieces',though thin, was at least a pleasurable, nostalgic read by someone who clearly knows his stuff. Armstrong never really lets on as to whether he's into this stuff or not, and while that's not essential, it's clearly more fun to know. So, the second of two noble trys is a let down as well. Perhaps a book with the color and flavor of Rockoff's, and the width and depth of Armstrong's, would be what we Slasher-buffs need.

Rather pointless.......2004-02-04

I wanted to like this book, really I did. Big props to McFarland for even comissioning a second study of the slasher genre after their good, if distressingly slim, Going to Pieces. The problem here is the lack of a critical commentary. After a brief overview of slasher film history and conventions, the majority of the book consists of long, boring plot synopses (spoilers and twist endings included) followed by one or two lines of lame "production notes" and the author's overall opinion of the film's worth. For $65, I was hoping for much more than rote recitation of slasher film plots. Where are the intriguing behind-the-scenes stories from Adam Rockoff's "Going to Pieces"? Where is the kind of excellent, in-depth analysis found in another McFarland book, John Kenneth Muir's eminently worthwhile "Horror Films of the 1970s"? Pretty much a washout, I'm granting an extra star for good intentions. The slasher genre still yearns for a comprehensive study...let this be the clarion call!

An excellent introduction to the topic........2005-03-16

I have used this text as basic reading for pre-service and in-service teacher seminars that focus on issues of popular culture in education. Students have rated the text highly. The text could be supplemented applying the inquiry techniques or teaching strategies, suggested by these authors, to new topics of popular culture. I highly recommend it for introductory teacher education courses.

Much needed book........2000-08-10

There's very little written about the role of popular culture in the classroom. Nearly all teachers get little or no education in what popular culture is all about, but yet popular culture has a powerful influence on shaping the self-images, values, and ideas young people have about themselves, their peers, and the larger society.

The authors of this work start from the premise that "The ability to read and critique popular media is significant for at least two reasons. First, in an age of expanding consumerism, children and young people who learn to question how their identities are constructed by the various forms of popular culture that they elect to take up are likely to make more informed decisions about how they live their lives. Second, the abundance of media messages (both image based and verbal) in the home and community suggests that there is an urgent need to help students learn how to evaluate such messages for their social, economic, and aesthetic contents." These authors go on to tell about the ways they approached or observed the teaching or use of popular culture in the classroom. Topics such as the differences between the Backstreet Boys and Puff Daddy, the Spice Girls, self-identity and images of young women in popular texts, and the various approaches to the pedagogy of popular culture are explored. The authors offer no cookbook strategies to take to the classroom, but they do provide a framework for teachers interested in introducing popular culture in their classroom.

Finally, I would like to say it's significant that this work is published by the International Reading Association, for "reading" popular culture is very much a part of how young people read their world. For far too long adults have assumed that the adult world is the only world to read and understand. In this approach, we have allowed the media and popular culture to educate our youth, while we assumed that the "adult," canonized world of school could have a greater impact. Well, it's not. We need to come to grips with that. We can use popular culture to help young people understand and become critically aware, as the authors explain, of how the social, political, and economic messages emanate from different forms of popular culture.

I highly recommend this work to my fellow teachers.

Any book that Bob Bly is associated with is bound to be good--no, great! And this one is no exception.

Important Work - These authors have nailed it!.......2001-01-30

This book makes for some very compelling reading. It is not often that I read a book that delivers the goods... but these authors have nailed it. It uses both traditional and dot com companies to illustrate ways any company can leverage the Internet to gain customers at substantially reduced costs. This book has everything you need to implement a successful e-mail campaign. From how to identify good email lists to how to create the right message. Including dos and don'ts, front-end tips and back end response analysis. Has just the right balance of technical and practical information. I am a marketing manager working for a 'Fortune 500' company. The information in this book cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars to find out. Some things are so important, I wish I thought of them myself or discovered them sooner. I can't wait to try some of these techniques out and see the effect on my next campaign. I am recommending this book to everyone I know. Buy it!

Best E-Mail Marketing Book In Print.......2001-01-24

I bought this book because I know the authors by reputation. My company was a traditional mail order company. We used to sell all of our products through our printed catalog. The Internet has changed all of that. Half our budget is now dedicated to e-mail marketing.

I applied the Author's recommendations and saw my e-mail response rates take off. On the most recent campaign, I saw a 247% lift in response resulting from the use of just one of their techniques.

The book is written in very clear and concise language. It's methodical and step-by-step method worked wonders for my company's program. I've read all the other books currently on the market, they just don't compare. If you're new to e-mail marketing or a serious pro, this book has information that you can put to use right away.

The tips and tricks in creating an e-mail program were dead on. I especially liked the chapters on the type of products that can be sold via the Internet and the characteristics of a successful Internet Buyer. The "Multi-Mailing" idea alone was worth the price of the book.

Water World.......2004-09-10

I first heard of the late Jacques Mayol from the now classic cult movie "The Big Blue". Judging by this encyclopedic work, the real Jacques Mayol was a more interesting character than his celluloid image. "Homo Delphinus" is clearly a work of love and a beautiful book. It is published in a large glossy format with stunning photos. It is difficult to classify the book as it is a combination of science, semi-science, ecology, philosophy and mysticism. Mr. Mayol is successful in producing a touching work that summarizes his life long romance with the aquatic world and his hopes and visions for the future.
As I said, the book is encyclopedic - Mr. Mayol covers a wide range of topics- and this is also one of the weaknesses of the book. At times I felt that the author was rambling a bit. Perhaps a good editor would have helped Mayol be more focused.
The translation is not always smooth. From the book itself it is unclear if the translation was done from the original French, the Italian version or both.
I was very interested to read that Mayol did not take kindly to the fact that freediving has become a type of extreme sport. He feels that this is dangerous and misconstrues the real spirit of apnea diving.
I would recommend this book to anybody interested in the oceans, marine mammals or diving.
If I could, I would have rated the book 4 1/2 stars.

Disappointing.......2002-03-22

I am a great admirer of Mr. Mayol. Since a child I felt always impressed about his contributions to science and conservationism. However, I just felt so disappointed when I read Homo Delphinus. Through it, he tries to cover many topics, but in such a superficial way that it made me anxious for not getting into any point at all. And his theory about the "homo delphinus" is only a collection of cliches and general thoughts.
With respect to the book itself, it lacks the quality of modern books and the photography has been poorly incorporated.
I am sure many people will love this book, but I expected far more from such a remarkable man as Jacques Mayol.

A MUST.......2002-01-01

Being a diver and a fan of the sea, having met Jacques Mayol the guru of breath-hold dives in Oct 2001 in Elba and upon learning that this famous book was now available in English, the next day I procured one from this site. Having since learnt of Jacques's passing on the 22nd of Dec 2001 I feel that anyone who dives or simply loves the sea and its creatures should get hold of this very remarkable book - before it goes out of production.
A fantastic book with lots of beautiful photographs that takes the reader through Jacques' early life, his reactions in the form of questions and answers to the movie "The Big Blue" and his techniques on apnea, his travels and inventions and his views on the purity of the ocean and man's endeavour to demolish anything remotely beautiful. A fantastic book to have and to keep for future generations of a man who seems to much prefer living with the creatures of the sea than with homo sapiens on land.

Religion is the source of the problem. You have some crazies establishing a country unjustly based on a religious promise and the mess we have today is what you get. Read it!

Propaganda against human rights.......2005-02-21

Horrible books such as this one make it possible to judge more reasonable ones. This book does indeed make mincemeat out of truth and scholarship. But the biggest problem it has is not the untruths. It is the absurd conclusions it draws from them. Even if Israel were in fact guilty of some of the more absurd things Hurley says, it would still have every right to exist, and Jews would still be human beings who would deserve human rights just like all other human beings.

By making a connection between anti-Israeli propaganda and a justification for denying human rights to Jews, books such as this one make it tough on a liberal historian of Israel. What if a decent and honest person wants to write a history of Israel, and happens to feel like concentrating on Israeli mistakes and on events that make Israel look bad? That's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. But now there is a very real threat that such a book could be regarded (especially by those who find a few honest mistakes in it) as anti-Israeli propaganda.

Well, there's no risk of that happening to this book. It isn't good scholarship. And it opposes human rights.

Politically, the book blasts the Likud government of Israel. That does not bother me. Even if I were an Israeli, I'd have never voted Likud.

Hurley begins with some history of ancient Israel. And he points out, quite rightly, that there was a problem with the Jewish Zealots. I tend to agree with him about that. Matter of fact, I think the Arab suicide bombers of today are at least as wacky as those Zealots.

Next, the author explains that many Jews are in the Diaspora by choice and would prefer not to live in Israel. That is true. But it is also true that many Jews would prefer to live in Israel, and that they ought to be permitted to do so. Moreover, Israel is small, so it is anything but greedy for Jews to have sovereignty over all of it.

We then see an account of Mandate history. The British 1939 White Paper is mentioned, but it is whitewashed. It is not shown how it directly made a state of Israel necessary. And Hurley insists that there was nothing the British could have done to let more Jews escape from Nazi Europe. That's false. They could have done nothing, instead of coming up with the White Paper. That would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

There are some untruths about Levantine Arab nationalism in the White Paper era, along with casual misstatements such as the Irgun launching an "unrestricted campaign of terror" against the British in February, 1944. The word "unrestricted" is a manifest falsehood.

After this, there is a caricature of the history of Israel's wars, as though Israel's only purpose were to annihilate the Arab people rather than build a state which would defend Jewish rights to life, liberty, and property. And there is a long section on the Israeli lobby. This lobby, in real life, is strong because it has an easy product to sell: truth, freedom, justice, and human rights. It is not as strong as Hurley pretends, but it is certainly stronger than he wishes it were!

Of course, Hurley discusses the case of the US ship, the Liberty, which was mistakenly attacked by Israel in the 1967 war. And he also misrepresents the Pollard spy case. Pollard broke the law and was sent to prison for it. Those who complained about what they considered Pollard's relatively severe sentence generally challenged only the plea-bargain aspect of the case, but Hurley doesn't tell us this.

Hurley does not come out against those who demand to steal Israeli land, or who demand that Israel make "concessions" that they would demand from no other nation. Instead, he tries to confuse the matter by implying that some Israelis are greedy! Yes, it is true. Some Israelis are greedy. Some are chauvinists. Some are racists. And so on. Does he really want to go into this? Has it occurred to him that Israel comes out looking very pretty in all these respects when one compares it to its neighbors?

Hurley has a chapter where he explains that the Jews have no right to a homeland. Only the Arabs have a right to Jewish land! After all, to him, Jews are thieves and Arabs are innocent.

The author and those like him are not going to be able to fight the tide of freedom and human rights forever. Right now, plenty of people are intent on being arbitrary and are trying to make sure that Jews have very limited rights at best in the Middle East. But it is likely that one day, people will focus on other issues. Jews (and other minorities) will then wind up with their fair share, give or take, just like everyone else. And that fair share will be less than Hurley says they want. But it will be far more than they have now, and vastly more than Hurley thinks they deserve.

March of Folly.......2004-06-26

The title of Hurley's initial chapter, "The March of Folly" is really the most fitting overview of this interesting, yet seriously flawed book. Herein, Hurley attempts to describe the awesome power of the Israeli lobby in American government and its impact on the state of Israel. The behind the scenes machinations of such organizations as AIPAC are well documented, and the points made in that regard are well taken. But, with that solid grounding, the author then proceeds to blame the government of the United States for the ongoing Middle East quagmire. This logic is sort of like that employed by the abusive husband who blames his wife for provoking him.

Throughout the book, Hurley describes the insanity of the Likud party policies and the real and present danger of the religious radicals who seem to exercise influence over that gangster party and their apologists in the United States. But then he reverts to the astounding conclusion that the paranoia of Israel is justified in terms of the myth of the six million Jews who supposedly died at the hands of the Nazis in World War II. In this, the double-mindedness of the author is shocking. But therein, I believe lies the insanity of the zionist positon, which this book rather clearly defines.

Two stark criticisms are necessary. One is that the absence of an index makes this a less than useful reference. The other is a rather astounding omission in the author's rendering of early Jewish history. He recounts the division of the nations of Israel and Judah, the Babylonian and Assyrian captivities, the reign of Herod, the Roman occupation, and some fair detail around first century Jerusalem. In this account, one key character is somehow missing. That character is Jesus Christ. The omission can only have been intentional. Given that the entire system of ordering how we keep track of time in Western Civilization is based on the life of Christ and that Hurley seems to intentionally avoid any recognition of His influence, we can only conclude that Mr. Hurley has tried, and failed, to describe a most momentous aspect of our current world situation without paying any attention to the most important character to ever grace this fallen world. This omission can not have been accidental and deeply tarnishes this work.

A Must Read for All Americans.......2004-03-08

Andrew Hurley puts into print what many people have known or suspected for many years. The extent of power that the AIPAC holds is mindblowing and a threat to democracy. Hurley does an incredable job of presenting the facts, both sides of arguement and then his opinion. This book is a must read for all Americans. We need to learn why our governments foreign policies, specifically in the middle east, has been such a failure.

This Book Too Valuable to Ignore.......2004-02-21

As it says in the Preface: "This book is concerned with the Israeli-Palestinian crisis and the threat it poses to the survival of Israel and to world peace. It is not primarily intended as a literary work-- but rather as a means of advancing a plan for peace in the Middle East." I found this book to be a valuable resource toward my understanding of the Middle East and why our U.S. Congress is so actively and financially pro-Israel.

A marvelous synthesis.......2001-03-16

Malcolm Hunter provided the first accessible, operational synthesis of landscape ecology, wildlife biology, and forestry in his "Wildlife, Forests, and Forestry." That book has proven indispensable for me during my career as a forest wildlife biologist. "Maintaining Biodiversity in Forest Ecosystems" is even better.

In the Foreword, Jack Ward Thomas says that he wishes that he had written this book. I wish I could write like these authors! The editing is first-class and a joy to read. Given the list of contributors, how could you lose? The organization is also quite logical, with papers organized into landscape- and stand-level topics.
