Book Description
Praise for WINNERS ARE DRIVEN
"The basic principles in becoming a world champion automobile racer, successful businessman, and human being are exactly the same principles that must be utilized by anyone in order to attain success. The many examples of good sportsmanship, the emphasis on family, the importance of customers, and good customer relationships are so very important in life today. Unser is a man who has lived his life to the fullest, accomplished so very, very much, and yet been true to his friends, his family, his competitors, and is the epitome of success."
-Barron Hilton, Chairman, Hilton Hotels
"A wild ride with a racing legend. Bobby is still going 100 mph as he shares his life strategy for success. Nothing fancy, just good ol' Unser common sense."
-Doug Sellars, Coordinating Producer, Fox Sports Net
"As a member of a family involved in American automobile racing for over 80 years, I find Bobby Unser's Winners Are Driven unique in comparing what it takes to be successful in the racing world and how it applies to one's business and personal life. . . . With Bobby's insight and gut instincts he effortlessly crosses over from racing to life in general."
-William D. Loadvine, Executive Director of Advancement,
University of Southern California
"Bobby's drive and passion have fueled his incredible success both on and off the track, and his story translates into invaluable life lessons for us all."
-Jeff Bliss, President, The Javelin Group
Former President/CEO Sara Lee Olympic Partnership
"This book depicts the life of Bobby Unser from his humble beginnings in the heartland to his many accomplishments. It spells out the philosophy of the great American spirit, the driving force of professional sports, and the necessity of having the presence of outstanding leaders and human beings throughout the world today."
-Gregory R. Dillon, Vice Chairman and Director Emeritus, Hilton Hotels
"Over thirty-five years ago, early in my ABC Sports career, I first met Bobby Unser. As one of this country's premier drivers, Bobby seemed to be at or near the front of each race. While attaining renown on the track, off the track he was gracious to the media and racing fans. When he retired, we hired Bobby as ABC Sports's color commentator for Indianapolis-car racing. For nine years he performed very professionally and very colorfully. Bobby Unser, successful on the track and off . . . still going strong."
-Dennis Lewin, Senior Vice President Broadcast Planning
The National Football League
Customer Reviews:
"Awesome stuff from a great racer".......2005-03-14
I'm glad I checked these tapes out and listened to them. If I would have started reading the book, I doubt I would have finished it. What a great rags-to-riches story. Bobby Unser has lived quite a life. There is so much a person can learn about success by listening or reading about his adventures on, and off the track. My only complaint is that many, if not most of the stories were repeated many times. Other than that I highly recommend these tapes. I enjoyed them.
Great book on winning in business and life (and racing)!.......2003-07-13
Bobby Unser was a very successful race car driver. This book shows that he always is a successful business man. Not being a racing fan, I wasn't too excited at first, but I enjoy reading motivational and self-improvement books, so I thought I'd check it out. Although I wouldn't say it turned me into a racing fan, I got to appreciate the scientific and sporting aspects of racing.
The advice given, although not earth-shattering, is both true and effective. For example, he talks about the desire to succeed and how this is a necessary "fuel" for winning. Many other self-development authors speak about this much as well. It is not anything new. However, He gives vivid examples from his racing career and from other anecdotes of friends and acquaintances. These examples are well-chosen because they are inspiring.
This is similar to other sections of his book. Bobby Unser seems to be very principle oriented as well as a man of integrity. He talk about instances where he could have turned his back on a commitment for monetary gain or to get on a better racing team (he made it seem like it was a somewhat common occurance in auto racing), but he stayed true to his commitment and it ended benefiting him in the end. This is refreshing considering some of the stereotypes of big business today where the search for a dollar seems to be the guiding principle sometimes.
I highly recommend this book. Even though it has a lot of auto racing stories, Unser tells them in a way that non-fans would really enjoy them and get motivation from their example.
Desire fuels the fire..........2003-04-20
...and visions are meant to be shared.
Bobby's translation of what it takes to move from leading a race into the winner's circle to leading in business is an analogy well made in this book, particularly for all racing fans who find themselves wanting to gain a winning edge in life.
Paul Pease parlays Bobby Unser's winning focus in driving to be first for the checkered flag into a shared vision for his readers of what it takes to succeed in business. Bobby's lessons learned on the track and in between race days made him a part of one of America's most winning race families in a sport that has literally killed many who took on its challenges.
Bobby's experience in the business of racing and in the business of business in his twenty years of retirement, make him an excellent teacher of valuable lessons for the lay reader. The examples of lessons learned from his years of racing provide an entertaining and enlightening background for the reader to gain perspective on each message Bobby has to offer.
Bobby is clearly a monumental character both on the track and off. Being a willing teacher of what it takes to make a difference in business as in life makes this book very satisfying to the finish.

I found Bobby's book to be not only a fun read, but also packed with great motivational tips. Applying the tips to racing really hit home and was great reinforcement. It was nice to read about someone who actually practices what they preach, and can then explain it so that others can benefit.

Part of the DV Magazine Expert Series, and written by someone who's lost a lot of blood on the front lines of the digital video revolution, Digital Guerrilla Video describes the history, tools, and techniques you can use to make a professional, cutting-edge video.
The book covers the technical requirements like gathering source footage and images, learning to manage them as a resource, editing fundamentals, post-production effects, and audio post-production. It even provides avenues for the finished product, offering insight that draws upon experience and suggests the "shameless self-promotion" needed to make a name in the field.
If you are looking for a training manual on configuring a digital video system using an editing package, this is probably not the book you need. Short on system specifics, it describes the whole playing field and techniques to getting the production done, not how to do it using the latest version of VideoBlahBlahPro 5.3.
There is something special about witnessing the birth of a revolution, about being on the leading edge of a new media power shift. If nothing else, you can accumulate more experience and war stories than those who come after--if you survive the first transitional upheaval. Digital Guerrilla Video, written by one experienced survivor, comes just after the first wave in the digital video revolution: the weapons are cheap and accessible, and the revolutionaries are lining up.
Think of this book as boot camp, a training ground, a survival guide. To the independent filmmaker with little or no digital experience, don't go into the jungle without this book. --Mike Caputo

Not bad.......2001-03-08
Lots of enthusiasm for the by-the-skin-of-your-pants approach to garage video making.
Some great ideas.......2001-02-05
Video is a creative medium, and this book is just meant to get you thinking, and exploring. For me, I never would have thought of covering my scanner with sand, or tinfoil to create backgrounds. He suggests using compositing tracker data to capture the motion of a natural object like a feather falling, and then applying that motion to your own animation -again I never would have thought of this. The book is full of creative tidbits. It's a "wow, if that's possible, than I could also do this" kind of book. It gets you thinking about all the possibilities and potential that exists for your videos.
The book is well formatted, short, and easy to read. Took me 4 days to read. Recommended.
Not Worth It.......2001-01-18
I was expecting the latest and greatest tips and techniques on how to get the best video with the lowest overhead. However, I was truly disappointed with the content as I felt it was so out of date that it was not very helpful in this digital age. Additionally, I felt the information was not layed out in the best format either. While I am an intermediate film-maker, I felt this book did not provide any new learning, value, or provide any usable take aways or action items to help the readers.
Excellent insider view of the digital video revolution.......2000-04-04
Hoffer's attitude towards the digital video revolution is a combination independent film producer and midnight computer hacker. His gonzo attitude lends a breezy, hip tone to this compendium of tips and tricks of the trade. His approach is one of passionate artistry rather than pedantry, as his love of the medium shines through the sometimes overcaffeinated prose. He is at his best when describing dozens of workarounds for bad shots, cheaper ways to get the same effect as the big production houses, and how to recognize, capture and recycle good shots for your media library. Best of all, he imparts to his readers the same enthusiasm and wry attitude that keep you going during those long, long hours of rendering and rewinding. Extensive quotes from other pioneers in the DV world, time-management tips, advice on the quickly evolving world of digital delivery (CD versus Web), and survival skills in this highly competitive environment are the best features. Recommended for novice or expert alike.

Awesome!.......2006-07-25
This is a great book if you are a huge American Idol fan and you want to know behind-the-scenes stuff. There's a lot of info. about each of the contestants as well, from their favorite color to their birthday. My favorite AI% was Jessica Sierra.
But, I have one question: Where's the Season 5 book? :)
GREAT BOOK!.......2005-09-27
WHEN you read this book it will let you know what happend
behind the scencs of american idol! and you will also learn
more about the top 12.MY favorite idols are CARRIE UNDERWOOD
and LINDSEY CARDINLE they are fantastic singers.IF only
lindsey wasnt voted off so quickly! BUY THIS BOOK its AWESOME!
This book is cool!.......2005-09-25
This book is pretty good. There are some bad things like since it was published and released before Carrie Underwood won, they don't show the winner like screaming, crying, being happy, blah, blah, blah. I watch the show every night and never missed an episode. The top 12 finalists are Lindsey Cardinale, Mikalah Gordon, Jessica Sierra, Nikko Smith, Nadia Turner, Anwar Robinson best!, Constantine Maroulis, Scott Savol, Anthony Federov, Vonzell Soloman, Bo Bice, and Carrie Underwood. They are in order in which they were eliminated from AI. The best is Anwar Robinson because he just sings great, looks great, never nervous, and so on. I think he should have been voted off near the end. Overall this book is awesome.
The Perfect American Idol Book!.......2005-09-04
This book is a great book to get to know the Top 12 a little better. It has quick facts, pictures, and a bio of each of them. Plus some behind the scences stuff, never- before seen pics, and them shopping, etc. When I met the Top Ten (but not Bo), I had them sign their page, and it worked out great. I love it!
American Idol Season 4 book review.......2005-08-02
I thought it was a good book, had lots of good quality pictures in there. The only complaint I have with it is it came out too early. It should have come out after the season was done so they could have the last final weeks in there and the winner showing her happiness. That's the only complaint I have is it should have been published after the season was over with. Otherwise it was a good book.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-30
This is an excellent resource. Shipped quickly and in great condition!!! Thank you.
Great advice.......2005-09-19
This is good, solid advice for dealing with the IRS. The authors credentials make it very valuable because he comes from the "other side" and can tell taxpayers how the IRS really works. He truly is an "insider."
His book is not a lot of hype on tricky loopholes, but very solid advice for dealing with what can be a very frightening situation. I've interviewed Scott for my Internet radio show, EverydayWealth Radio, and found him to be a very conscientious caring resource for dealing with tax issues. I recommend this book and his other resources!
Tax This: A Great Resource.......2003-04-29
"Tax This" is a great resource for individuals, small businesses, and self-employed persons, like myself. From the general IRS and tax system information to the rules for dealing with an actual IRS audit, this book has all the information you'll need. The section on how to handle IRS Penalties and Notices and the the chapters on negotiating with the IRS were very informative and designed to save money. If you are currently involved in an IRS audit and want to know how to defend yorself or if you simply want to know some strategies for reducing your odds of being selected for an IRS audit this book is for you. I would recommend it for any taxpayer.
Great insight into dealing with the IRS.......2003-04-27
If you're faced with an encounter with the IRS, I would highly recommend getting this book for starters. Most tax experts will tend to steer you in one of two directions: knuckle under or fight the IRS up to and including jail time (for you, not the expert.) You need to understand what your options are before you seek outside help because all too often the outside help has an agenda that is not in your best interests.
This book does an outstanding job of laying out realistic stategies and options for helping you with tax issues and for working with, rather than against, the IRS to obtain the best possible outcome. It offers a refreshing change in the tax literature. By offering well-grounded, honest advice in a well-written fashion, this book should be in the hands of anyone seeking to resolve a tax problem without "giving away the farm" to the IRS.
Learn what your options are and how best to work with the IRS and you'll save yourself a lot of grief and a lot of green.
Shoveling Through the Bureaucracy of the I.R.S........2003-04-26
Tax This! An Insiders Guide to Standing Up to the IRS is a brilliantly written guide to help familiarize the average taxpayer with the Internal Revenue Service's procedures, functions, processes, and codes. I found this book to be exceptionally helpful while shoveling through the complex rules and regulations established by the I.R.S. This book is a must-have reference guide for every taxpayer!

Book Description
When Clyde Edgerton was four years old, his mother took him to a local airport to see the airplanes. Eighteen years later, she would take him to the same airport to catch a plane to Texas for Air Force pilot training. She’d been his first passenger when he got his aviator’s license. She’d supported his decision to join the Air Force. All the same, she wished he’d kept up his piano lessons instead.
But Truma Edgerton’s only son had fallen in love with flying, and had fallen hard. His plan was to pilot the newest, sleekest, fastest aircraft available. The first time he soloed in a jet, he felt “a strange pride and power.” By then, the only access to the cockpits of fighter jets was via the war in Vietnam. So he spent a year flying combat reconnaissance over the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and he won the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Back at home, he took up another passion—writing. By and by, he bought himself his own airplane, a Piper Super Cruiser that he named
Annabelle. Now, thirty years after Vietnam, Clyde Edgerton looks back at his youthful passion for flying, at the joy he took in mastering it, at the exhilaration—and lingering anguish—of combat flight.
Solo is a story told with empathy and humor—and with searing honesty that will resonate with every pilot who remembers the first take off, the first landing, the first solo. For those of us who always choose the window seat, it’s a thrilling story to experience vicariously.
Customer Reviews:
Not well written or particularly interesting........2007-07-17
I suppose if you are a pilot, hearing Edgerton re-tell his own experiences learning to fly would be pretty interesting. If you're just interested in planes, the book is just OK. If you're looking for a good story you'll be deeply disappointed.
About 1/3 of the book is learning to fly one plane after another. About 1/3 is an attempt to make sense out of his service in Vietnam. The remaining 1/3 is filler with an occasional anecdote, sometimes interesting.
What is so surprising is how clumsily the text is written and how little he has to say. I think maybe he wrote this book too long after the fact. The Vietnam war was a long time ago, and his memories have faded.
A healthy dose of military aviation insights........2007-01-07
You may recognize Clyde Edgerton's name: he's written eight previous novels but here provides a compelling saga in SOLO: MY ADVENTURES IN THE AIR, a biographical memoir which provides the true account of his flying experience, from Air Force training and combat missions in Vietnam to his own personal plane. The joy Edgerton holds for planes and flying shines from every chapter: any with an affection for planes will love this celebration of flight, which holds a healthy dose of military aviation insights.

It should have been great........2006-12-29
Solo, by Clyde Edgerton, could have been a great book about flying. Edgerton's experience in aviation along with his obvious life long passion for flight, combined with his post-flying resume entry of Professor of Writing and the University of North Carolina (Wilmington) should have been the recipe for the best book of flying since Rinker Buck's Flight of Passage. Unfortunately, it is not. That stated, this is a good book that aviation enthusiasts will likely forgive Prof. Edgerton's flaws and enjoy its quickly passing pages.
Solo begins slowly with a rather poor explanation of flight and flight controls for the non-pilot reader. It reads as some dated and poorly written instruction manual. Edgerton should have just stuck with his suggested reading mentioned in the Author's Note of Wolfgang Languisher's timeless "Stick and Rudder". My sense in that most who will want to read this book either know about the basics of flying or don't care and just want him to get to his jet training and his rediscovery of the joy of flying general aviation "taildraggers" later in his life. A good one third to one half of this book reads more like a diary then a work of a military pilot, trained also as a writer. Ah, but the second half . . .
Solo literally soars in the second half, dealing with the writers training in military fighter aircraft in the Vietnam Era and of his experiences in that environment. Edgerton also nails the rediscovery of flight later in life in small and slow general aviation aircraft. He writes clearly and beautifully on what all of us in the aviation community know about flying - it almost doesn't matter what you fly, as long as you fly. Here is a fighter pilot accustomed to F-4 Fantom jets, the premier fighter of its day, falling in love with a Piper 2 seater with an engine half the size of most of today's cars. Unfortunately for all readers, just when building to this crescendo and dénouement he falls back to listing seemingly nonsensical and peripheral logbook entries and spoils the end.
As a pilot and flight instructor, my predisposition was to enjoy this book and, by and large, I did. But that was only because my blinders allowed me to get past his very obvious poor and disjointed writings. As with too many books a couple of more critical edits could have made this a must read. I would say it is a fun, quick read but only for those who have a real passion for flight.
How low can you go? Solo.......2006-08-18
My father and I have the same last name, we are both pilots and we have both read SOLO by Clyde Edgerton. That's were we parted company. My dad liked it. I did not.
Imagine the movie AMERICAN GRAFFITI after you cut out hotrods, drive-ins, and cute girls and replaced them with characters rehashing their collective driver's training experiences. Then you would have SOLO: MY ADVENTURES ON THE GROUND.
SOLO is a dull book so stuffed with filler that it could have been sold as a pillow. It contains pages of walking around a plane and explaining every part; pages of flying a plane and explaining every control; pages of the author's old letters home; pages of transcribed audiotapes; pages of anecdotes that never quite become interesting, pages of dialog that convey little meaning.
Only two stories were memorable:
The first story struck me because it typifies the style of book and underlines its major fault: only cookie-cutter characters populate Edgerton's universe. Readers are first introduced to fellow fighter pilot Rob on page 150 only because Edgerton needs to tell of his death on page 151. Worse, Edgerton tells the story as a laundry list of facts without apparent emotion or empathy. The sum total of Edgerton breaking the news to Rob's fiancé on page 152 is, "I sent a telegram to Lynda and then wrote her a letter."
The second story suprised me because it demonstrated that Edgerton can tell a story well when he wants to. Taking nine pages instead of his usual nine sentences, Edgerton does a great job of conveying the tale of two downed pilots he helped search for while on duty in Vietnam. Neither pilot was found. Much later in life, Edgerton discovered that one of the missing pilots had survived the war as P.O.W. while the second remains missing to this day.
Unfortunately, one interesting story does not make a book or justify its purchase. I gave 2 stars out of respect for Edgerton's service to his country and because I save 1-star reviews for the truly awful. If I were giving it a letter grade though, I would give it a D- because Mr. Edgerton earns his living as a professor of creative writing and should know better.
In short, a more accurate title would have been: SOLO: MY SINGLE INTERESTING ADVENTURE IN THE AIR.
An Insight into the Dream of Flight.......2006-03-24
This book is probably the best written book I have read this year. It is an example of a book written by someone who knows their subject matter well. Edgerton has a way of making you feel as though you are a fly on the wall of the cockpit.
He used this skill to guide us through his flying years, be it when he was watching planes at the local airport or when he was commanding pilot over the jungles of Vietnam.
I would recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in aviation or good writing. I particularily enjoyed this book because I have an interest inflight and it is always great to hear and read about someone who has done something with the dream.
This is one great book.

For My Daughter.......2007-06-26
Honestly, I bought this for my daughter to use in a college course she needed it for.
Good........2004-08-20
This book will open up your eyes and make you think differently about many different issues concering out society today. You might also realize those issues are much more complicated than they seem on the surface.
An excellent reference text for readings on contempory issue.......1998-11-29
The book is in two parts: the first lays down the elements of citical thinking and the art of dissecting an argument, and the second is an excellent selection of readings which offer both pro and con views on a wide variety of social and moral subjects.
I find myself continually referring to the second section of the book, because the readings selected are compelling, and very well written. They include modern writers, as well as the best writings of past authors who explore contemporary issues of their day. That they continue to be "hot" issues today speaks to the continuing struggle we have with certain kinds of issues.
After each pair of readings the authors have offered a series of questions for further thought, which can be used for independent analysis of the reading, or as part of a course in critical thinking. I found these questions very helpful in stimulating discussion with others, especially those with strong feelings in the subject areas.
This book has become a "must read" in my circle of critically thinking frinds.
