I have conquered my Everest. It's not often that I am completely overwhelmed by a wrestling book. When my copy of Pile Driver arrived at my door I gulped at the horror of beginning this 730-page epic novel with my mediocre reading skills. Despite my terror, I greatly anticipated the magnificent journey into the past I was about to take.

Pile Driver is a true underdog story set mainly in the first half of the 1900s and focuses on a wrestler named Charles "Midget" Fischer. Author Kenneth R. Boness went to great efforts in compiling this extraordinary story about a small man who made an immediate impact in a big man's world. Almost ALWAYS going into his matches as the expected "loser", Fischer made a habit out of beating bigger men with bigger egos. After solidifying a strong reputation, however, it became increasingly difficult to secure matches with the various title holders, who were often found figuratively running in the opposite direction with their tails between their legs.

With great detail, you will read about Charlie Fisher early years and tough upbringing, followed by taking on the cruel world head on. Perhaps the most entertaining story in this book is the one of Fischer taking down a carnival tough man and embarrassing him so badly that he left town in shame. Then you will read about the politics that kept Fischer from competing in the Olympics, leading to the decision of him turning to the professional ranks and starting one of the most impressive winning streaks in the history of wrestling. Politics seemed to follow Fischer around as he was forced to deal with crooked managers protecting their cowardly champions by keeping Fischer on the payroll as their official "Police Man." The "Midget" could not be ignored as he built up a series of impressive victories, and after breaking away from his corrupt manager, he began to push towards the World's Middleweight championship. Upon conquering the Middleweight division, Fischer moved on to the Light Heavyweight level with similar dominance and even courageously challenged many Heavyweights of the era.

While I worked my way through the pages of this book, I was continually troubled by the internal debate going on within my head over the blurred line between what was real and what was fake (and by fake, I mean "pre-determined" or "scripted"). You have to take into account that this was the early 1900s when professional wrestling was wildly believed to be a legitimate exhibition. I do know that at some point in this book, the switch was made from real to scripted, but I'm not exactly sure when. Midget's persistent attitude towards maintaining an honest legitimacy within the sport was one of the things that endeared him to fans and probably soured him with various promoters who were intent on embracing the new theory of evolving the industry. It sounds as though Fischer basically "kept it real" until the very end of his career, but there was several occurrences during high profile matches that suggested possible scripting. I guess we'll never know. Upon retirement, Mr. Fischer became disenchanted by the changes going on within the sport that he loved, which is very ironic and funny to me, as this was the 1950s. It's "funny" to me because wrestlers from the 50s through the 70s are now complaining about the new direction of professional wrestling. It will never end.

The story of Charles "Midget" Fischer is a very important one for the history of professional wrestling and simply HAD to be told. He was a man who maintained his integrity from the day he was born until the day he died, despite the obstacles he was faced with. Very few wrestling books contain truly unique content and if you want to get a hardcore education in the ways of old style wrestling then I highly recommend picking up a copy of Pile Driver as soon as possible.

This book has a nice look and a nice feel with great models and a wide variety of looks. The thing with the large variety is that you will love some, like some, like some less, and possibly loathe some. Some are medieval, some modern, some retro, some theatrical, some discipline, some camp, and they are variably made of vinyl, leather, plastic, metal, brocade, gingham, or garbage bin liners. All that variety sounds appealing, and is. The problem is that not all combinations of corset/human shapes/styles will come together in a look that you like. My favourite pic is the one on the cover...but this look is very limited in the rest of the book.

Although I had to stick paper over a third of the photos (of which there are over 100) in order to really enjoy this book, I can still see all the pics due to the 3 pages of thumbnails at the end. And just to clarify...there is nothing wrong with any one photo, it is just personal taste...as indicated by the fact that my afternoon with tape and scissors means I have hidden some of my flatmates faves!

I was sadly disappointed with the print quality of this book. The cheap, printed in China, desk-top publishing look and feel should have relegated this book to the bargain bin. The added Photoshop effects almost warranted a return item. Nice pics none-the less but save your money, pass it up.

some of the pics i have seen online, but thats only because i frequent dark garden's website. beautifully and tastefully done photographs. it has a small intro (about 3 or 4 pages) and the rest is photographs. i recomend any corset lover to have this book on their coffee table!

This book is a visual feast! I love the models; the editors picked a variety of models in many different shapes, sizes, genders, and ages. Many different corset styles come to life on these pages. There are detailed close-up pages to perhaps entice the ambitious tailor or seamstress into attempting to make his/her own corset someday. There are some great costume ideas here. Most of the models look like they are really enjoying themselves. Some of the quotes at the end of the book are very entertaining, some are silly, and all of them illustrate the many reasons why people enjoy dressing up. This is a gorgeous book, extremely reasonably priced, and a great addition to any costumer's or corsetry afficiando's library! (I am just *dying* for my own Dark Garden corset now, by the way.)

This is a must have title for every family. What a terrific idea! We use it all the time when playing cards, outdoor games, or just looking for something to do on family night. This book isn't just for families with children though. It is terrific for anyone who enjoys playing card or other games.

This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.

It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.

I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .

Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.

Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03

This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

The relationship between father and son is illuminated by the father's poems and the son's prose in this sensitive biography of William Stafford by his son Kim. Our meditation and writing group has spent six months slowly absorbing this richness. This book bears reading and rereading.

I didn't so much read this book as I absorbed it...this is a book seeped in wisdom and quiet integrity. During my first reading I carried it around like a companion. There are many books that I have loved but there are few that I trust completely.

If you enjoy William Stafford's poetry then his son Kim is an expert guide into the deeper realms of his father's life and work. William Stafford is one of the few poets I know of whose life (the way he raised his children, educated his students and maintained his principles) blends seamlessly with his work.

Oftentimes great men are a bit pre-occupied being great men and forget to focus on the upbringing of their children. Kim Stafford shares with the reader the experience of being raised by a great artist who had the generosity of spirit and clear headedness to bring his artistry home with him and apply it to his family life.

Many reviewers describe Stafford as a remote and distant father...I would characterize him as an extremely careful father...who communicated love through reverence and shared experience.

Poetry and philosophy aside 'Early Morning' is also a lovely memoir that is deeply personal without being suffocating...artful without being pretentious. I envy anyone who gets to open its pages for a first reading.

Most of the time I feel as if the media is simply aiding government in its agenda to spread mass hypnosis. Mr. de krassel's insightful, intelligent book is a wake-up call to think for ourselves, see the truth behind the spin and take action in whatever ways we feel called. It is a must read for anyone who is willing to take responsibility for what we all have contributed to creating and the courage to believe in new possibilities.

Includes opportunity for amazement and many good chuckles, as well as a view of Hong Kong that we ordinarily are not privy to experience from our receiving end of the media's voice. Inspiring and challenging with a delicious sense of connectedness served with humor and sensitivity beyond outrage.

A Must Read for Anyone Along the Missouri River.......2006-03-11

This book has it all: exquisite text, well-researched material, interesting format, a "plot" with as many twists and turns as the river itself, and an ability to haunt the reader long after the book is done. Lambrecht's book reveals the history of 20th century activities along the Missouri that is seldom (if ever) taught in our schools. From industrious ambitions, the battles over water, and an account of the indigenous tribes who have lost their culture to Western ways of industry, Big Muddy Blues also presents a hope of reclaiming the wild nature of the Missouri River. The author guides the reader along a closer examination into ways public policy, administration and private interests prioritize the work of government agencies. Lambrecht--the Washington DC Bureau Chief for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch-- travelled the River and talked with people affected by it, now and in the past. Anyone interested in the interplay among government bodies, grassroots efforts, concerned individual action and politics in general will love this book. Readers of nonfiction will appreciate the engaging manner the material is presented. People living in states that border the Missouri River or have water supplies and wildlife affected by it should add this to their reading list... sooner rather than later. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Big Muddy Blues is a gift to citizens, government agency administrators and law-makers everywhere.

Is Lambrecht Speaking Only of the Missouri?.......2005-07-08

In "Big Muddy Blues", Bill Lambrecht has woven intriguing, though somewhat unsettling, tales of one of our most precious resources - water. Specifically he speaks of the Missouri River, but I found myself drawing correlations to other bodies of water dotting our country. If man's need for control has so skewed the patterns of the Missouri, how many other rivers, streams, lakes and bays have suffered the same fate - and with what result? Asking questions of various individuals and groups whose livelihoods are intertwined with the Missouri, Lambrecht presents their answers, but allows the reader to draw conclusions.

Disjointed though the writing style appears from time to time, there is a pattern. Lambrecht's tales, of politics and special interest groups, take the reader back and forth through the life of the Missouri - from the days of Lewis and Clark to the present.

I praise Lambrecht for raising awareness, of the great Missouri River itself as well as of the politics and factions that are affecting our water resources and environments that rely upon them.

Bill Lambrecht's BIG MUDDY BLUES takes a timely look at the history and the future of the longest river in the United States. It is full of intriguing detail about the river's geography and its inhabitants (notably the pallid sturgeon), the characters who depend on it for their livelihoods, and the woeful land grabs, degradation, and politics that have altered the course of one of the U.S.'s greatest natural resources. But Lambrecht's admiration for and belief in his river (he comes from St. Louis) leave us with glimmers of hope for the future health of the river. His engaging style and neatly-organized chapters contribute to an excellent read.
