        Book Description

The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is an exhaustive reference to the treatment and progress of five different ethnic groups in the world's most visible industry. This book explores the various stereotypes propagated by television and the movies, as well as the breakthrough shows and films that shattered them. The text is divided into five sections: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans. Each section examines the representation of that particular ethnic group both on-screen and behind the camera. Presented in an easy-to-use, A-to-Z format, each comprehensive section offers an account detailing landmark films, movies, and television series relevant to that group; biographical entries covering key personalities; and topical entries covering key themes, genres, and fictional characters. An extensive index helps guide students, researchers, and general readers.

        5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic!.......2003-04-10

Mary Jane Alexander, I am a New York film critic and enthusiast.

Film historian and authority James Robert Parish has done it again! "The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood," like all of Mr. Parish's well-regarded books, is comprehensive, thoroughly accurate and immensely readable. The sheer research is astounding and Mr. Parish uncovers the many fascinating tidbits that enliven film history. This is a book that is a must not only for every film and media library, but also for the general reader and film fan who wants is interested in the careers, lives and place in film history of the many ethnic stars who have thrilled us on screen. Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars It's All in the Details.......2003-03-12

This is a wonderfully concise, detailed, and helpful general reference source for anyone researching ethnicity in the major films, television shows and performers of the past century. The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is easy to read, gives only the important highlights of each title and personality, and is well-indexed. The photographs in the book are nostalgic and illustrative. It's all in here -- the breakthroughs, the award winners, the important firsts, as well as other contributions that make Hollywood history and today's Hollywood unique.

5 out of 5 stars Here is an "ABOUT TIME!" book.......2003-03-07

The movies have always help guide and shape moviegoers into an an understanding of who they are, where they're from, and where they're going. But much of the vast American public has been virtually invisible on the screen -- which is why this book is so valuable. Our overlooked ethnic groups -- African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans -- now have a wonderful reference source to help them understand who they are, where they're from, where they're going. This encyclopedia may be a bit pricey for average bookbuyers (where's the cheaper paperback edition?), but it will be criminal if every library in the country doesn't make it readily available.

5 out of 5 stars authoritative and fascinating!.......2003-03-06

Jim Parish has outdone himself with this voluminous, impeccably researched work which is a concept long overdue in the publishing world. With the fine work of Allan Taylor, he has created a wonderful tome and a reference book which will be quite useful as well as enjoyable to read. Well worth the money! Cough up! You'll be happy you did.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up.......2003-02-12

By Hollywood, I expected the author to concentrate his efforts on films, which would have been fine in and of itself. But I was surprised (pleasantly) to see the detail into which he looks at the presentation of ethnic groups on television as well. This is the book that should be required reference material on every course in pop culture and in film studies as well. But don't let that scare you away from reading it. The book is written in a style that everyone can enjoy. It's one of those books once you pick up and start flipping through, you spend hours going through.

        Book Description

Bohemianism is a way of life, a state of mind, an atmosphere. It is not a trend, its a timeless movement. It is about living beyond convention. BOHEMIAN MANIFESTO explores and joyfully celebrates the creativity, the originality, and the splendor of a lifestyle and spirit shared by free-thinking, free-living artists, poets, writers, sculptors, musicians, and intellectuals. This is the first book to distill and categorize all the ingredients of Bohemian life. In a witty and engaging style, Laren Stover examines the contents of a Bohemians closet, bathroom, and bookshelf. She explains the allure of absinthe, why it isnt wise to leave a Bohemian unattended in your home--you could return to find nude nymphs painted on your lamp shades--and how to identify what type of Bohemian you might be.

        1 out of 5 stars Fools!!! .......2007-07-09

This is a fun read for those who lack philosophy and understanding of European culture. To suggest conservative values are somehow tied in with corporate profit taking is beyond stupidity. Often it is the lesse faire entrepreneur that thumbs his nose at community values. The entrepreneur is often the bourgeois aristocrat with the capital enough to succeed in his endeavors. Those who hold to the lifestyle described in this book should understand that they are bought and sold by pop culture that claims to "disrupt society norms". Your puppets and you should not claim to be original or rebellious--try lazy and subjective!

I really liked this book. It's a fun read. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I think the Bombshell Manual of Style is better. However, it is a fun book, and one should read it with a sense of humor, and not take themselves, or the book, too seriously.

        3 out of 5 stars Amusing Cliches.......2006-04-03

Amusing. Cliche. That's it. I found the unfounded association of bohemianism with the dust "residue from John Wayne Gacy's clown white" to be very distasteful and very disturbing.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful Visual Reference.......2007-08-23

I purchased several of Tom Tierney's historical paper doll sets to augment my family history projects. I have 150 years of family photos which are mostly in black and white, of course, so it's great to see the period clothing in detail and in color. The paper dolls will add so much to my research and my family's appreciation of the historical times and stories. Although I intend to keep the paper dolls uncut, they are printed on card stock which would be easy to cut and not tear apart if well-cared for.

5 out of 5 stars These Fashions didn't come from a Missionary Barrel !!.......2007-08-02

It's obvious that no member of this family ever had to dive into a *missionary barrel* to select clothing. Tom Tierney chose an upper-middle-class family to represent America in the 1930s.

Following the stock market crash of 1929 a mother wearing a fur coat was not commonplace. The hats do grab your attention - - perhaps they were designed to draw eyes away from any shabbiness in shoes or dress? My own wardrobe during those years is remembered as a blur of nondescript cotton print dresses, and that was long before no-iron fabrics were invented. Those were the days when the father's shirts were sent out for pressing. They were returned, folded around cardboard inserts that the children eagerly grabbed for their drawing projects - - which might include original paper doll designs!

Some will purchase this *American Family of the 1930s* - - possibly to leave it uncut for a collection. Fewer children receive paper dolls as gifts now, but when they do they probably get busy drawing & coloring clothes that fit the mod taste of most girls nowadays. Reviewer mcHAIKU enjoys Tierney's dolls as historical statements even though these fashions do not help grandchildren to 'envision' her growing-up years.

If you collect paper dolls, or just like them, I suggest you snatch this one up. It's one of the newest additions to my collection, and is already one of my favorite of the Tierney paper doll families. The entire family comes in swimsuits: grandparents Walter and JoAnn; Walter's sons Patrick and Brad; JoAnn's children Scott and Shannon; Patrick's smiling wife Kathy; their absolutely darling children--Bridget has Shirley Temple curls, Deirdre has a fashionable bob-cut, and Brandon has his uncle's good looks. They have fashionable costumes for all occasions: shopping, winter outings, and, of course, Shannon's afternoon wedding! On the last plate is Shannon's beautiful wedding dress. Georgeous dress, in the 30's fashion. I won't spoil it though--you have to see it for yourself! A must-buy!

Every few years a book changes the way people think about a field. In psychology there is Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence. In science, James Gleick's Chaos. In economics and finance, Burton Malkiel's A Random Walk Down Wall Street. And in business there is now Surfing the Edge of Chaos by Richard T. Pascale, Mark Millemann, and Linda Gioja. Surfing the Edge of Chaos is a brilliant, powerful, and practical book about the parallels between business and nature -- two fields that feature nonstop battles between the forces of tradition and the forces of transformation. Managers should closely watch new discoveries in biology, especially the study of self-organization and emergence, particularly as the old hierarchical model of corporate organization becomes seemingly obsolete. Richard T. Pascale, Mark Millemann and Linda Gioja present case histories showing how corporate leaders executed turnarounds and solved critical problems by tapping the insight and intelligence of their organizations' members. In many cases, however, their success was only partial. It is to the authors' credit that they do not flinch from describing failures, even as they support the approach. They particularly note that stress can have the positive effect of forcing an organization to change its behavior. Though they first published their observations in 2000, some of their insights seem likely to endure the test of time. We recommend this book in confidence that executives can learn from its concepts about how natural systems can inform management.

2 out of 5 stars Shoddy science research.......2003-10-01

"Businesses...can learn a great deal from nature (p 3)". I wholeheartedly agree, but unfortunately this book does not deliver.

The business research appears well done, but the science reserach that is supposedly it backing up is abysmal. The impression this book has left me is that the writers started with their theories and then handpicked some scientific anecdotes and (sometimes erroneous) generalities to support some of their claims, while other claims (like the Law of Requisite Variety) have no substantiation from the life sciences attempted. This is a backwards approach; I would have liked to see the authors examine the scientific research and then see what the business implications are.

        Three examples of erroneous generalities:

        1. Endemic island organisms just "tweaking the status quo" (in reality, this is where the greatest diversity happens; its the 'weedy' organisms like starlings and dandelions that adapt by just 'tweaking'). (And I will try to ignore the goof about the dodo being from the South Pacific).

        2. The idea that cooperation and altruism are major forces that organisms "seek" (in reality, these have been discovered to be incidental effects).

        3. Equating the idea that 'every molecule in the human body replaces itself via genetic instructions' with the idea that 'human and corporate bodies are rejuvenated by fresh and varied genetic material'. Those are two very opposed statements.

There is so much biological research that has major implications for organizational research that is lacking here: Memetics and primate social systems are two in particular.

To conclude: The authors apparently have a poor grasp of the biological sciences, so that means their attempts at backing up their claims with biological reserach is suspect at best.

5 out of 5 stars Read this or be left in the dust!.......2002-04-09

Its funny. I was reading the review following this one and the person was saying how he could NOT find anything worthwhile to apply to his business. He must not have even picked up the book!

I think there are plenty of great lessons within the book. Its not only a book about strategy, but a new framework to think in terms of. The world has changed greatly in the last 20 years and a lot of the old management frameworks have less significance. Complexity science is the new way to think and this book does a fantastic job of relating the "complex" topic to business. And the rules apply to all areas of the organization: strategy, organizational design, etc. If you want to be prepared to lead the complex globlal organizations of tomorrow, then this is a must read.

        2 out of 5 stars Can't see the use.......2002-02-21

I read this kind of books hoping to find useful ideas for my business. Here I can't find any.

Even if one is just curious, the book is too full of platitudes. For instance, the Army chapter (in which I was genuinely interested) waxes high on gruelling experience, after-action review, and all that. But what's the big deal? Mutatis mutandis, I did the same in sports training twenty years ago.

PS: I think I got unhelpful votes from people disliking my Army comments, so I edited this review to better reflect what I mean. But let me make it clear: independent of any view of the military, this is a bad book.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2001-03-01

Surfing the Edge of Chaos does a marvelous job of taking many of the ideas being developed in complexity theory and applying them to the business world. In contrast say to Garrett Ralls who tried to do much the same thing, this book succeeds. I found myself continually thinking about not only the examples they provide, but also on my own work experiences and other companies that I have analyzed.

The authors do an excellent job of contrasting their approach (adaptive leadership) with more traditional reorganization (operational leadership). But refreshingly, they also acknowledge that in some cases, the more traditional approach might be more appropriate. There are many interesting concepts being developed by complexity theorists and this book manages to capture many, if not most, of them.

They show repeatedly the need to increase the stress on an organization in order to break past patterns of behavior. Their use of fitness landscapes (the idea that a successful company rests on a peak, and that in order to reach a new higher peak, often you must go down into the valley) is very powerful and at least partially explains why so many successful companies subsequently struggle, or fail, to adapt. Importantly though, the authors also spend a great deal of time talking about the unintended (or second and third order) effects of change. The point is not that you will be able to predict all of them (which is what chaos theory explicity says you cannot do), but rather that you must be flexible enough to roll with those unanticipated consequences.

Does that mean that every idea in this book is new? Of course not, but to be successful, a new theory often must combine the old with the new. And this book does a masterful of applying the ideas of Chaos/Complexity theory to business, of providing a new framework to think about both old and new problems. You may not agree with everything that appears in this book, but you will certainly come away with much food for thought.

          Book Description

When Samuel G. Freedman was nearing fifty, the same age at which his mother died of breast cancer, he realized that he did not know who she was. Of course, he knew that Eleanor had been his mother, a mother he kept at an emotional distance both in life and after death. He had never thought about the entire life she lived before him, a life of her own dreams and disappointments. And now, that ignorance haunted him.

So Freedman set out to discover the past, and Who She Was is the story of what he found. It is the story of a young woman's ambitions and yearnings, of the struggles of her impoverished immigrant parents, and of the ravages of the Great Depression, World War II, and the Holocaust.

It is also the story of a middle-aged son wracked with regret over the disregard he had shown as a teenage boy for a terminally ill mother, and as an adult incapable for decades of visiting her grave. It is the story of how he healed that wound by asking all the questions he had not asked when his mother was alive.

Whom did she love? Who broke her heart? What lifted her spirits? What crushed her hopes? What did she long to become? And did she get to become that woman in her brief time on earth?

Who She Was brings a compassionate yet unflinching eye to the American Jewish experience. It recaptures the working-class borough of the Bronx with its tenements and pushcarts, its union halls and storefront synagogues and rooftop-tar beaches. It remembers a time when husbands searched hundreds of miles for steady work and wives sent packages and prayers to their European relatives in the desperate hope they might survive the Nazis. In such a world, Eleanor Hatkin came of age, striving for education, for love, for a way out.

Researched as a history, written like a novel, Who She Was stands in the tradition of such classics as Call It Sleep and The Assistant. In bringing to life his mother, Samuel G. Freedman has given all readers a memorable heroine.

          5 out of 5 stars A work of devotion.......2007-04-27

This is a moving tribute. The author makes the effort to know and understand his mother after she has died, in part because he senses he has been unfair to her while she lived. Freedman writes with understanding and sympathy of a woman who according to her son reached the peak of her emotional life at seventeen in a love forbidden her by her mother. Freedman tells of how his mother had to sacrifice her own wellbeing and desire for an education in order to help support her very poor family. He blames his grandmother for some of the dissatisfaction in his mother's life. At the same time he praises his grandmother for being the strong and ethical member of the family who cared about what was happening to her relatives in Europe during the Holocaust.
Freedman blames himself for his behavior as college student and teacher in refusing to acknowledge his mother's presence in the class. He does however indicate that there were many times in their life when he tried to do his best for her. For instance he tells of a story where he bought his mother a special kind of plant , and how disheartened he was when after a few weeks it wilted. His mother comforted him in this.
It would be nice to think that she knows of his devotion to him and looking down from Heaven is filled with pride and happiness for her son's devotion to her in telling her story.

5 out of 5 stars Could not put it down-read this book more intensely than most........2006-04-10

Sam's insight to the era of the Bronx shows the underlying warmth and respect he has for his family. I could not put the book down; reading well into the night; hours passing quickly. We can all relate, Jewish or non- Jew. They were tough times, not necessarily blessed with opportunities; and especially so for a bright woman with what could have been an even brighter future had she been born in more contemporary times. Thank you for sharing your Mom's life with us. You did it in a beautiful and literary way.
I gained insight into Fannie's family; folks I have known, loved, respected and whose friendship I have cherished for almost 50 years.
          Thank you, Sam. Great job.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, moving and well written.......2005-10-10

My mother grew up in the Bronx not all that far (in time and place) from Freedman's mother Eleanor, so I found this book both nostalgic and deeply touching. Even if I didn't know first-hand about shopping at Alexander's, going to Loew's Paradise, and commuting to City College, I would find this book engrossing.

By tracing his mother's teenage and early adult years and the shifting relationships with family and friends, he shows how her decisions and attitudes influenced who she became--and why she kept her earlier life a mystery from those closest to her. Insightful, with a powerful yet very personal ending. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Moving Account of an Ordinary Life.......2005-08-27

I found Freedman's account of his mother to be melacholy and moving. All our parents remain a mystery to us when they live, more so when they die. Freedman's rejection of his mother in life and embrace is death is deeply touching.

5 out of 5 stars A really great read! .......2005-08-17

I could not put this book down....it's fantastic! The author, whose mother died when he was a college student, pieces together her pre-motherhood life to create a wonderful story of a complex young woman...a woman who, to paraphrase his words, peaked at a young age and spent the rest of her life trying to capture that success. I appreciate the emotional and literary efforts Mr Freedman put into this book...it was a joy to read and gave me lots of food for thought. Highly recommend!

              3 out of 5 stars Needs work.......2006-08-16

Nicholas von Hoffman is a brilliant columnist who, if this book is any indication, should stick to shorter-format works. CITIZEN COHN is fact-packed, and has some well-drawn anecdotes, but overall it is an unwieldy and disorganized tome. Von Hoffman jumps forward and back in time, in an almost stream-of-consciousness style, which bogs down the narrative and muddies the chronology of events he recounts. In the space of one paragraph, he darts from 1954 to 1980-something and then back to 1964, bringing in a parallel but unrelated incident involving entirely different players.

If you have a lot of time on your hands, and access to a high-speed internet connection to provide additional context for his stories, this great lump of a book can help kill a few hours here and there, but to someone who admires von Hoffman's usual style, it was a serious disappointment.

              5 out of 5 stars A Venal Man.......2004-02-07

He began his career by suborning the perjury that put an innocent woman in the electric chair. He was very proud of this. He lied, cheated and stole his entire life. He bribed judges and threatened witnesses. As a legal technician he was completely inept, unread in the law and ignorant of basic trial practice. His best and most frequently used courtroom tactic was the continuance. He was a fixer of the highest magnitude. He was disbarred just before he withered away from AIDS, way too late to do society any good. He is unmourned and unmissed. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Still, Roy Cohn did live a life that makes for interesting reading and Nicholas Von Hoffman has pieced it all together in this wonderful biography. "Citizen Cohn" will be the source book on this annoying gnat of a man long after Cohn has joined his pal Walter Winchell in obscurity. "Citizen Cohn" is both serious and blisteringly funny, anecdotal, and gossipy. Mr. Von Hoffman trods the well-worn path of Cohn's early years-how he got David Greenglass to lie from the witness stand and send his sister Ethel Rosenberg to the death house at Sing Sing, how he used the notoriety he gained from the Rosenberg trial to vault to a position as Senator Joe McCarthy's witch hunter in chief, how he was caught red-handed trying to arrange special favors for his "special friend" G. David Schine, a humble army private who was also a member of McCarthy's staff (in Lillian Hellman's great phrase, Cohn and Schine and McCarthy were "...Bonnie and Bonnie and Clyde")-but it is Roy Cohn in New York where "Citizen Cohn" sparkles.

Cohn the uber lawyer was both powerful and petty. He could make or break a federal judical nominee; he also wouldn't pay his electric bill. Cohn needed massive amounts of cash to maintain his dashing man about town persona (dashing, but closeted in the most transparent of closets) and he didn't care how he got it. He stole so much money from so many clients that the wonder isn't why it took so long to disbar him but why some outraged victim didn't simply shoot him. Mr. Von Hoffman minces no words in describing Cohn's lifetime of thievery and fortifies his revelations with the testimonials of those who were there. The writing is evocative, gray and somber during the McCarthy era, light and breezy during the disco years. There is an illuminating word picture of Roy Cohn at Studio 54, where he was royalty, standing with one of his handsome young men, both clad all in black, sunglasses, lights beating down on them in the middle of the floor, music blaring, the two standing stock-still, posing, profiling "...like secret service agents at the beach".

When it was almost over he took to wearing an orange phosphorescent tuxedo. This blatant self-promoter was reduced to wearing an outlandish coat that screamed "Look at me! Look at me!". It was a pathetic, but fitting, end to a pathetic man.

5 out of 5 stars The essential work on Cohn.......2003-12-22

Watching Mike Nichols' superb adaptation of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America," I was struck by Al Pacino's fierce interpretation of Roy Cohn. It reminded me of Nicholas Von Hoffman's work. It made me think "if anyone is watching this & wants to know where to turn to find out more about the life and times of Roy Cohn, I would start with Von Hoffman."

So do that. Pick up a used copy of 'Citizen Cohn' and be prepared for a great read. Love him or loathe him, Roy Cohn was a one-of-a-kind individual whose actions and behavior (both professional and personal) will have you dropping your jaw and shaking your head.

Passages of this book have stuck with me verbatim for 15 years. Von Hoffman's writing is that good. Roy Cohn is that memorable.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant biography of a very complex man.......2000-09-20

Loathed by some, well respected by others, Roy Cohn was known as the toughest and most brilliant lawyer in America. And indeed, his power brokering, love of glamour; controversy, and notoriety made him, in the end, one of the most influential men in our society. From his role in the Rosenbergs' trial and as chiefcounsel to Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Senate hearings through his extraordinary friendship with J. Edgar Hoover and his own vendetta against Robert Kennedy, Cohn's reputation built. But his unique practice of law and power brokering was most notorious outside the courtroom. His unprecedented track record and his sensational and shocking behavior drew the rich and the powerful to him to solve their problems. His clients ranged from media barons to members of organized crime, to the owners and clientele of Studio 54, to glittering society names-especially if they were divorcing-and a host of the mighty in business and politics. At the same time Cohn, himself the target of numerous indictments, was haunted by professional misconduct charges and finally disbarred shortly before his death. His private life was even more startling than the public one. Roy Cohn's name was constantly in gossip columns, hobnobbing with the glitterati; then there were his lovers, his denials of his homosexuality and AIDS, and finally his death from AIDS-related cancer in 1986. Nicholas von Hoffman has created a remarkable and provocative biography. interviewing family members, colleagues, clients, friends, and lovers, he gives us an extraordinary portrait of the man, his ideological passion, and the patterns of power and money that controlled his life. From the hidden bank accounts, numerous incidents of political fixing, and surprising connections, to the clients who were bilked, the judges and politicians who made his singular practice of law possible, Citizen Cohn reveals the real Roy Cohn. Nicholas von Hoffman has written for the Chicago Daily News, the Washington Post, and King Features Syndicate, and reported through the electronic media on CBS's '60 Minutes, CBS Radio, and the Byline Radio Syndicate. He has also written for almost every major magazine and is the author of nine previous books, including Organized Crinies, Make-Believe Presidents, and, with Garry Trudeau, The Fireside Watergate.

Concerned Citizens of Montauk was formed in 1970 as an organized response to block plans by developers to build 1,400 houses near Big Reed Pond. As a direct result, Theodore Roosevelt County Park was created. Building on successes such as this first one, CCM evolved to become one of the most effective citizens' groups on the East End over the next 35 years, working to preserve the unique and fragile environment and ecology of Montauk. Today it boasts a membership of over 800 residents. In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the organization, this book tells the story of Concerned Citizens of Montauk, its evolution, history, and struggles to preserve the natural beauty of the town on the very east end of the East End.
