Book Description

“The maverick’s way of conducting business forswears the leader as commanding general; it rejects the practice of top-down, authoritative command. Rather, it proposes the leader as catalyst, conscience, and inspirer . . . The true leader sees his job as setting an environment in which new ideas can emerge that neither he nor any other individual anticipated. That leap of imagination, that moment of genuine creativity, can only be inspired by a leader who encourages exploration and shows a willingness to consider a totally new approach.” --from Mind Your Own Business

The corporate misdeeds of self-serving executives during the high-octane economy of the 1990s have forced many people to rethink the qualities that make a strong leader. For sixty years, Sidney Harman, the chairman and CEO of the world’s premier manufacturer of high-end audio equipment, has stood apart from the crowd, building his business the old-fashioned way, by satisfying customers and, in doing so, making a healthy profit. His refreshingly employee-centric, bottoms-up approach to business is the secret of Harman International’s continuing success.

In Mind Your Own Business, Harman shares his visionary ideas about leadership, providing a welcome contrast to the bad behavior of business leaders recently dominating the news. Harman focuses on creating a culture of personal responsibility throughout his company. He likens his top management team to a jazz quartet that listens to and improvises with one another to create harmony. He stresses the need to do more for workers at every level because employees are the company’s most valuable asset. At Harman International, he has established in-house classrooms to teach English, basic math, health, and music, and encourages his employees to pursue their potential.

Now a hale and healthy eighty-five, Harman thinks that “an idea a day” is more important than the proverbial apple and that the key to a long life is a restless curiosity. In the bestselling tradition of Max DePree’s Leadership Is an Art, Mind Your Own Business is a frank, no-nonsense guide for those who want to bring strength, vitality, and values to their businesses—and to their lives.

"This is an intriguing autobiography about a remarkable career. I've learned a lot from Sidney Harman -- and so will every reader."
    JIMMY CARTER

"This is a wise book. There's no higher accolade I could provide. I will bet a pretty penny it becomes a classic -- the equal of Alfred Sloan's My Years With General Motors. My heartfelt thanks to Sidney Harman, at 84, for making this splendid offering to all of us."
    TOM PETERS

"This book is all heart -- strong, vibrant, humorous, practical and hugely creative. Sidney Harman uses plain language to catalogue the story of a remarkable company and its contributions to American enterprise and culture. A patriot businessman who cares, Harman has written a no-nonsense book you can't put down -- every page brims with ideas and principals that will help us all optimize our talents and lead more fulfilling lives."
ARTHUR LEVITT, CHAIRMAN OF THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION

"It is the best book about business that I have ever read -- by far. While at General Motors, I must have read Sloan's important book several times; it contained much wisdom. However, Harman's is not only profound. It sparkles, and the progression of thought is like a great work of music. In short, I was captivated

5 out of 5 stars Inappropriate Forum to Discuss Harman's Family Ethics.......2005-11-27

I have reviewed the comments on this board and felt utterly compelled to say something. My father is Sidney Harman and I can assure you that he is a wonderful and caring father to his six children and two step-children. His family life, however, is irrelevant when reviewing and contemplating the content of the book. This book is not called Mind Your Own Family. And to those conjecturing about my father's child rearing skills, I recommend you take a hint of advice from the book's title.

1 out of 5 stars Highly Disappointing.......2004-10-10

This book is full of bravado and it reads like a one written by a megalomaniac. In the book, it sounds as if Sidney is attempting to address his own regrets in life. I don't mean to discount Sidney's success in business, but he does not share much of that insight in his book. He emphasizes a lot on ethics and integrity, but he doesn't seem to fully embrace that at work or demonstrate that in his family and personal life. He also emphasizes hard work, but who doesn't already know that. To put this book at the level of a classic is highly unfortunate, and to categorize it in the same league as "My Years With General Motors," as Tom Peters has done, is to do Alfred P. Sloan gross injustice.

2 out of 5 stars What is important in life?.......2004-05-27

Dr. Harman had four children, worked 24/7, and divorced his first wife after 25 years. Ten years before the divorce he took up golf and played weekends, leaving his children, entering their teenage years, for his wife to raise. At age 60 he married a woman 25 years his junior and according to the book had two more children with her. They are still married, after some 25 years.

This book contains anecdotal information regarding the environment in which a large company operates, and some things to consider while doing so. That info is useful. The author also deals extensively with business ethics. This is less useful. His ethical model was apparently different at home than in the office.

2 out of 5 stars Shoulda Been a Pamphlet.......2004-03-19

Mr. Harman espouses hard work and integrity. There - I just saved you hours of time and the cost of this book.

1 out of 5 stars From a former employee.......2004-03-03

Working for Sidney for almost four years was an enlightening experience. I can honestly say that the way he portrays himself and his company bears literally no resemblance to how either exists in reality. I found Sidney to be a megalomaniac and quite divorced from the day-to-day goings on in Harman International. The company culture is abusive, and back-stabbing is not only the norm but is rewarded. I found senior management there to be "ethically malleable," to say the least, and financial results were reported that were less than honest. You'd never get this from reading this book. So.... if you're looking for good fiction this might be your ticket. If you want an accurate representation of how HI exists, this ain't it. I noticed that it is for sale in the "Used" section for under a dollar ... it's still overpriced.

Plowing in Hope seeks to affirm the power and glory of human culture within a clearly defined biblical theology. True culture, Hegeman writes, "is not an activity to keep mankind occupied until something else (presumably better) happens. It has a particular God-ordained end in view: the development of the earth into a global network of gardens and cities in harmony with nature--a glorious garden-city." Placing the development of human culture in a biblical context through a close examination of key words in Greek and Hebrew ("work," for example), the author explores the true importance of the labor we do upon the world, arguing that true work must involve the "threefold connotation of work, service, and worship.

Not all will agree with Hegeman's conclusions; he rejects the monastic ideal of celibacy, for example, as a "denial of the normative goodness of marriage and the culturative commandment to fill the earth," and assumes that much of "non-Christian art" is useful in that it "may be given over to God's people for their use and enjoyment." Nonetheless, the book will be helpful to Bible-focused Christians who are looking for an affirmation of human culture in a Christ-centered context. --Doug Thorpe

        Book Description

"The Bible begins in a garden and ends in a city." The prevailing "culture war" view is too ingrown. It holds that culture is primarily an ideological/religious struggle between good and evil, godly and rebellious art, literature, politics, philosophy, etc. But at its foundation, culture is about building, not about conflict. Doing culture from a positive, earth-transformational perspective will help us build a more comprehensive, radical, holistic culture in line with the principles of Scripture, with less opportunity for compromise with unbelieving cultures we might encounter.

This book aims to start us down the path toward a biblical theology of culture by providing a positive, clear, and colorful introduction to the topic. Hegeman shows that culture has a particular God-ordained end in view: the development of the earth into a global network of gardens and cities in harmony with nature-a glorious garden-city.

4 out of 5 stars Our Role in God's Creation.......2007-07-23

David Hegeman has written an interesting book called 'Plowing in Hope: Toward a Biblical Theology of Culture.' Noting that the Bible begins with a garden and ends with a city, Hegeman walks through the Scripture showing the importance of culture, and our role in it. It is his prayer that " this book will help the bride of Jesus Christ recover her vital call to rule, fill, work, and preserve the earth as a high and indispensable priority. Culture-making is not optional; it is a command which from the very beginning has never been revoked" (23). This book is helpful for anyone desiring to know what the Scripture says concerning culture.
        ----Quotes:
----This is the goal of the culturative enterprise. We rule as vice-regents of the Creator, bringing the whole earth under human subjection so that we in turn may present the creation to God. Our rule of the earth has its ultimate fulfillment in Christ's perfect rule." 43
----"We are redeemed so that we may work! The human race is brought back to a state of righteousness so that we might return to our Edenic calling to develop ('work') the earth into a glorious garden-city and finally take possession of our long-awaited inheritance." 71

5 out of 5 stars The "Cultural Mandate" at its finest!.......2006-10-28

Superb application of biblical theology to culture, with strong scriptural foundation. Hegeman makes fascinating, extensive and understandable use of original biblical Greek and Hebrew words to support his arguments. Excellent discussion (and refutation) of the "Christian as pilgrim" view along with a helpful exegesis of 2 Pet. 3:10-13 from a transformationalist viewpoint. Instructive postscript on developing a Christian critique of the arts. Will destroy any latent gnostic ideas you have, especially regarding work. Much-needed, unique (biblical!) treatment of an often confused subject (Christ and culture).

5 out of 5 stars A cultured perspective on culture.......2002-04-18

Many Christian books on culture focus exclusively on the most pompous form of culture - politics. Hegeman takes us a step back to our cultural presuppositions. Laying out the biblical themes of Eden and the New Jerusalem, he sets the stage in a very practical way so that we can act out our culture based on something more profound than the mid-term election.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-05-15

Christians desperately need books of this kind to think about God's view of human culture. The author does a wonderful job of laying out a biblical theology of culture. I especially appreciated his demonstration of the progressiveness of God's redemptive work in culture as well as in us! If you are tired of "culture wars" and "boycott lists" as the only interaction many evangelicals have with culture- this book is for you.

The book is well written and solidly argued. A must for anyone interested in reforming all of life for the glory of God!

          Product Description

Culture is a continuing, forward process—the gradual unveiling of truth as life. But often we get ensnarled. We can only imagine culture as a war, a gritty ideological and religious struggle where every arena is bloody with strife: art, philosophy, cuisine, music, literature, science. But at its foundation, culture is about building, not conflict. The time has come for us to beat our swords into plowshares.

By realizing the Bible's vision for a cultivated earth, we can build a more comprehensive, radical, holistic culture, resistant to compromise and dedicated to a Trinitarian aesthetic. What does this culture look like? It is the development of the earth into a global fabric of gardens and cities in harmony with nature—a glorious garden-city.

Our "cultural mandate" finds its roots in God's command for us to rule the earth and till the ground, causing hidden potential to flourish. The New Testament boldly reverberates this calling. God has given central preeminence to our cultural "plowing," weaving it into the whole tapestry of mankind's history, from the very beginning to the consummation and beyond. Plowing in Hope provides a positive, clear, and colorful introduction to this transformational topic.

Lara's Book is a love letter from definitive Gen X scribe Douglas Coupland to definitive Gen X pinup girl Lara Croft. The buxom star of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II is idolized in both words (Coupland provides a work of fiction about Lara and waxes poetic about his feelings for her and her unique stardom) and pictures (literally thousands from digitally rendered images of Lara in a polo uniform to handmade drawings by her legions of fans). Coupland's story, "Air Tibet," illustrated wonderfully by Kris Renkewitz, is tons of genre-hopping fun, and his description of his obsession with Ms. Croft is singular and evocative of the freestyle interludes of Generation X.

If you're feeling a little weird about owning a glossy-paged, coffee-table-worthy pinup book dedicated to a video game, Lara's Book justifies itself by containing complete strategy guides for all the versions of Tomb Raider. Anyone interested in game development or the minutia of Lara's workstation-induced birth will find the Core team's account of Tomb Raider's development entertaining. Did we mention that it has thousands of pictures of Lara Croft? --Andrew Boscardin

5 out of 5 stars And Just Wait Until Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft !.......2001-03-30

This book actually touches on two favorites of mine. Douglas Coupland is the author of two of my favorite books - Generation X and MicroSerfs. Tomb Raider is my favorite gaming series and I just adore Lara Croft. She is the coolest. This book combines a tribute to Lara and a walk-through of the Tomb Raider Games - I believe through Tomb Raider II. Now, anyone who's ever played TR knows how rockin' cool Lara Croft is. This book contains excellent renderings of our favorite adventurer. The overall book quality is very good - glossy pages and very well presented. There's a lot of look at but if you enjoy the series, then this is a must have. And just a reminder - as all Tomb Raider fans know - The Tomb Raider movie - starring Angelina Jolie ( they couldn't have made a better choice ) as Lara Croft - opens on June 15th 2001...I know I can't wait. Best Regards, turtlex

1 out of 5 stars I'm a Lara fan, but this book doesn't do much for me........2000-08-25

This book is mostly fluff, little substance. It looks like the bulk of the effort went into trying to be fancy with images download from the web. The walkthroughs are printed in multiple fonts--which makes them tough to read. There are much better guides available anyway. This book could have been much better. I was very disappointed. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Summary in three words:"Avoid this book"!.......1999-10-09

I am a big fan of Lara Croft, and try to get everything that has to do with her, most of 'em are good. BUT this book under review "Lara's Book" I hate! This book is not worth the paper that it is written on! The guides are inaccurate and confusing to read -- if you want a good walkthrough get "The Tomb Raider Official Strategy Guides" by Zach Meston, which are put out by Dimension Publications. The pictures (the only worthwhile thing about the book) can be found in other sources -- calenders, websites and so on.Finally the story . . . put me to sleep. Good night, ZZZZZZZ!

1 out of 5 stars Sexist videogame characters suck........1999-07-07

I really like Douglas Coupland's writing--I've read Microserfs, and it's a great book, but what is THIS all about? A super-long fan book about a videogame character that looks like a generation-X pornstar? I'd be almost less surprised to hear he'd written a book about the Spice Girls. Yuck.

5 out of 5 stars I know exactly how Coupland feels about Lara.......1999-06-09

In my mind's eye, I picture Lara back-flipping and gunning down the giant Atlantean mutant in Natla, the last level of Tomb Raider. If it wasn't for this book I wouldn't have completed Tomb Raider I, II or Unfinished Business.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-04

The subtitle of this book promises the "untold story" of dirty international financial dealings. That's not quite what it delivers, because the book compiles already-published accounts, public reports and Congressional testimony, and adds to them. Given that money laundering involves drug dealers, terrorists and slavers, the book has some titillating asides about sex, violence and filthy money. Author Peter Lilley explains precisely how money laundering works, including an introduction to the practices and techniques that have proven most successful. While praising the author's reportorial depth, we note one dilemma that emerges from such thoroughness: we hope this book doesn't fall into the hands of someone who wishes to take up money laundering but is unsure how to proceed. Business people who want to avoid being victimized should take particular note of the chapter discussing well-known checks-and-balances, controls and best practices.

          Book Description

For a thousand years the dense rain forests of Central America concealed the ruins of one of the world's great civilizations, that of the ancient Maya. Early explorers found themselves in cities dominated by steep temple pyramids and fallen idols covered in unfathomable hieroglyphs. Since the mid-nineteenth century, scholars have tried to understand the mysterious people who produced one of the greatest flowerings of art and culture in the New World. Behind the ruined Maya cities and their abandoned artworks--the superb sculptures of Copan, the fine vase painting of Naranjo, the mighty pyramids of Tikal and Calakmul--lie the turbulent stories of their ruling dynasties. The recent tremendous progress in reading Maya hieroglyphs is now bringing this story into focus. Here is the first book to bring together and examine the greatest Maya dynasties in a single volume. Two of the world's leading experts in Maya hieroglyphic decipherment reveal the latest thinking on the nature of Maya divine kingship, statehood, and political authority, and describe the most recent readings and archaeological finds, including their own discoveries. 250 illustrations, 100 in color.

Key features of the book include:

          * biographical accounts of 152 kings and four ruling queens;
          * royal names spelled in hieroglyphs, plus datafiles listing lineage, spouses and children, and place of burial;
          * special features and boxes, ranging from the supernatural journeys of the dead kings to the Maya ballgame;
          * timelines providing at-a-glance visual guides to the length and key events of each reign.

          4 out of 5 stars THOROUGH.......2007-05-13

The Maya Kings & Queens is a great reference book on the succession of Royal leaders during the Mayan Classic period (AD. 250-900). It breaks down the areas, such as Palenque, Calakmul, Yaxchilan, Capan, and Caracol, and there respective leaders. The sculptures and other images contained in this book are clear and distinct. This book is on par with anything written on ancient Egypt. However with all the different variations in the names of the Kings and Queens, I just wish the author would have broadened the index and made it more concise.

The amount of information that has accumulated about the Maya in the last ten years is extraordinary. I find it amazing to go to public libraries, even good ones like the state library here in Tallahassee, Florida, only to find that most of the books on the Maya date from the 1970's or earlier, and virtually everything they have to say about the historical context of Maya civilization is woefully out of date.

If you're out of date about the latest developments in Maya historiography, or if you're just developing an interest in the subject, you'll find this book to be of value. It gives the history of the major classic era cities (the book is completely about the classic period, and only digresses outside of that era to add supporting information), and does it in a format that is attractive and interesting. Indeed, many of the illustrations are of pieces that have only recently been unearthed, and this increases the interest of the book.

The one drawback is that the book is a little too advanced for the beginner - it can be difficult to work out the historical signposts - and a little too basic for the student already familiar with most recent work. A little more data about the overall context of the period and culture would be of some value. Aside from this one objection, it is an admirable work, well-written enough to capture the interest of the intelligent general reader while not giving the feeling that the authors are talking down to a non-specialist level. Definitely worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Kings of the Yucatan.......2002-02-25

The `Chronicle of the Mayan Kings' is a beautifully illustrated chronicle of the Mayan kings of the poorly known Mayan kingdoms of the Yucatan like Tikal and Copan. The names of the Mayan kings are shown in Mayan hieroglyphs. There are accounts of what we know of the accomplishments of men such as Yik'in Chan Kawil of Tikal and Yukmook Cheen 2 of Calukmal. We see the relations among the Mayan states. There are timelines to make the time periods more clear. Special features describe the complex Mayan calendar and the Mayan number system, which is based on twenty instead of ten.
This book is an excellent account of what little is known about the Mayan states.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all your Classic Maya needs.......2001-11-11

This book is a perfect example on how to divulge history without making it too simple or pandering to the "sensationalist" aspects of the tale. The research on the ancient Maya culture over the last decades has revealed enough information that a more or less complete sequence of events can be drawn over several centuries. It also has revealed that the Mayan did not seem able, or willing, to strive towards the establishment of a centralized empire as others civilizations tried. The result is a complex story involving the struggles between loosely organized groups of petty states around a few major ones. Telling that tale in an exciting way is thus more difficult: no Alexander the Great figure here to follow.... But Martin and Grube have been able to spin the yard of quite a tale. Once you pass the catchy title that makes you wonder whether the inside will be lightweight history, you do realize that this is a very complete, if brief, book. After a concise introductory chapter, the authors chose deliberately to tell the story of a few individual cities. You might disagree as to why they chose those (Northern cities such as Uxmal are absent). You might have wanted a more unified tale of Mayan civilization. Or perhaps a more people's oriented history. But the fact is that there are not many facts on the ancient Maya in spite of recent advances. It is to the merit of the authors to make the most of these facts to write an informative story, a city based history as the Mayan were, without entering into undue speculations. And that the book is loaded with nice pictures, interesting maps and diagrams is a great plus. Nice enough for a coffee table, deep enough for a serious library.

              Book Description

Diana, the Princess of Wales, was one of the most publicly covered figures in the modern world. Known as "the people's princess," Diana captivated all who knew her. Much has already been written about her life, both professionally and personally, but until now no one has told her story in the way that only one man can-Paul Burrell-whom she described as both "her rock" and "the only man I can trust."

Now comes the long awaited book, A ROYAL DUTY by Paul Burrell, the man in whom she confided on matters big and small. Paul, one of the Queen's personal footmen, met Diana during one of her first visits to Balmoral Castle. And while it may have been fate that brought them together, they shared a strong bond that endured to the end of her life. Burrell became Diana's confidant and his unique perspective casts new light on the Princess of Wales and the events that would shape her life and the lives of those around her.

At the time of her death there was much speculation about Diana's future plans including her thoughts about remarrying and the possibility of relocating to America. Paul, who was one of the last people to speak with her, hopes to set the record straight for the Princess he so admired and cherished. Drawing on private conversations, personal recollections, diaries and letters, Paul has written an extraordinary account of a unique time in the history of the Royal Family.

When asked why he wrote the book, this is what Paul had to say. "I have made this book as true to her spirit as possible-as inspiring, as loving, as fun. Over the last six years I've had time to reflect on the extraordinary events that I have witnessed. During that time, I have watched and listened patiently as many individuals have claimed to know the truth about the Princess of Wales. I have watched and listened knowing that what was claimed to be the truth is actually far from it. I decided reluctantly to tell what I know to be the truth because I firmly believe that someone has to stand in the Princess' corner and fight for her now that she cannot do so. I welcome the official inquest into her death and it is my hope that it will uncover what really happened that night in Paris. I never thought that I would need to write this book but then I never thought that I would need to redress the balance. I never thought that I would need to defend the Princess against untruths from many different quarters. I was devoted to the Royal Family for many years-first to the Queen, then to the Prince of Wales and finally to the Princess and I remain a loyal subject. But I believe that it is important that the truth is known NOW rather than waiting for the details to emerge in official papers when they are released in 25 years."

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written & Wonderfully Candid.......2007-07-28

Being a tremendous fan of H.R.H. Diana,Princess of Wales, I was fully prepared to read the butler's account of what he thought he knew about Diana and the royal family. I was not prepared to read anything of substance other than a bit of inside information that only someone who had been in service would know. I was therefore delighted and very well pleased that what I was reading was so much more than I ever thought it could or would be. Paul Burrel has put his heart and soul on the line in order to give us the Diana we all wanted her to be. Her impact on the Burrell family, most especially Paul, was enormous and not unlike the indelible impression she left on the world. Her life with H.R.H. Charles, Prince of Wales and heir to the throne was told with sincerity, empathy and the candour of someone who knew both intimately because he served both. His experiences went beyond serving the Prince and Princess and were preceded with 10 years of personal service to Her Majesty, the Queen. To say, simply, that he knew the entire family is an understatement of import, for Paul Burrell was privvy to more and trusted much more than a regular servant would be in the royal households. Diana trusted him implicitly but not immediately. Such was her mistrust of all highly placed staff members and such was the uncertainty that came from within. Paul takes us on the journey of his life with the "Royals" and his incredible closeness to the Princess of Wales. I was truly swept away by his brilliant insights, his love and caring for Diana and the fact that even through death no secret would be revealed to the world that ought not to have been. When Paul sat with the Princess in Paris, after her death, his pain was palpable and his "Royal Duty" had not ended with this tragic event. In many ways, it never would and never can. This is the "Must Read" of all that has been written about this lovely woman who became the heart and soul of a nation and an ambassador of light and goodness to the world.

5 out of 5 stars Getting to know the Royals.......2007-07-05

Paul Burrell has written a wonderful book on the Royal Family and his dedicated service of more than two decades. He shares an insider's view of life in the palaces. He gives his readers a detailed perspective of what it's like being a servant and working his way up to higher positions with more responsibilities and interacting with the Royals. The reader learns of a warm, personal side to the Queen whom he served as her personal footman for several years. I truly believe Mr. Burrell became Princess Diana's personal friend and confidant. It's obvious from what he shares from his heart and in his story. I found myself standing next to Mr. Burrell at each phase of his journey in the life of the Royals. The hardest part was realizing that I was getting towards the end of the book. I am happy to hear Mr. Burrell has another book out soon so I can take another journey with him in remembering Princess Diana.

5 out of 5 stars A very very good book.......2007-06-29

I liked this book very much. Paul starts out with a behind the scenes view
of what life was like in Buckingham Palace for a "servant". Very informative and entertaining. He details how he came to be and what it was like to be Lady Di's butler and how his relationship with her changed
over the years. If you want to know what Lady Di was like as his "boss",
her relationship with her boys and with the rest of the Royal Family, and the paparatizzi,
you should read this book as well as his followup book "The Way We Were". I believe there was no one closer to her on a daily basis the last few years of her life than Paul Burrell.

              5 out of 5 stars A Royal Duty.......2007-05-07

What a beautifully written book. It seemed to speak right from Paul Burrell's heart! I was filled with emotion the whole time I was reading it! I never wanted to put this book down. If you love Diana, you'll most likely love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Most revealing and excellent book about Princess Diana.......2007-03-26

Paul Burrell has written the best read on Princess Diana that has been written to date. It is better than The Truth by Judy Wade - it allows you to feel as if you knew Diana personally! He was a totally devoted butler, friend, confidente, and the one who stood by her side long after her death! Yea for Paul!
