5 out of 5 stars Ponzi.......2005-08-17

Written like a novel, this is the true story of Charles Ponzi, the most famous con man using the "rob-Peter-to-pay-Paul" scam. I found the book to be entertaining without a dull spot. After several unsuccessful cons, he started with a small stake and took people's money and paid them 50% in 45 days. When other people heard, the number of investors mushroomed. He finally made about $8,000,000 (in the 1920's) in this pyramid scheme before he was caught.

4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2004-07-22

?Ponzi? chronicles the life of Charles Ponzi who is synonymous with the scam of paying off new investors with old investors money. This entertaining character would promise a 50% return on investment in 90 days.

To recruit investors Ponzi would hire people on a freelance basis, whereby they would earn 10% of new investors money. For example, if they located someone willing to invest $1000 they would earn $100. These recruiters would target both the poor and the wealthy. This caused such a surge in demand that Ponzi could afford paying off old investors with the new money that was constantly pouring in.

Each major city eventually had someone working for him, and eventually there would be thousands of investors lined up, waiting patiently for hours for the privilege of investing.

At one point major banks had to shut down because most account holders were withdrawing all of their funds to invest with Ponzi. Ponzi of course had enough money to rescue some banks from bankruptcy and became a majority shareholder.

These investments were based on a bogus business of buying and selling International Reply Coupons.

This is thrilling to read and at times what happens sounds too unbelievable to be. Other scenes are hilarious as the story moves around from one con to another. My only complaint with this book is that at times the author ?Donald Dunn? dictates what Ponzi is thinking, when there is no actual way for him to know.

This is a great addition to the ?Broadway Books Library of Larceny?. You might also want to read another book in this series titled ?Where?s the Money?, which is the autobiography of Willie Sutton, a famous bank robber.

5 out of 5 stars great for book clubs!.......2004-04-16

This book is a great read that all will enjoy! Fascinating story and very well written. I am recommending PONZI for my next book club meeting. And I can't wait for the movie to come out!

4 out of 5 stars An engaging tale..........2004-04-05

Like a great crime drama, "Ponzi" takes you down the amazing road of a simple huckster, and how close he came to making it big. I knocked it out in under 3 days; it's impossible to put down!

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps the finest overview of Charles Ponzi!.......2004-04-05

To understand the Ponzi scheme, is to understand the basic root of all types of [cheating]. This book gives a wonderful overview of the life and times of Charles Ponzi. It is written as a historical novel, but seems to be very well researched! The epilogue alone is full of details concerning an important subject about whom little has been written. I only wish the book was footnoted as to references. Donald Dunn has done history a great service by documenting the life of Mr. Ponzi. THIS BOOK IS A "FUN READ" ABOUT A SERIOUS HISTORICAL EVENT!

        Book Description

The audacious, attention-grabbing, tongue-in-cheek filmmaker's manifesto that was Dogme 95 has had a massive international impact. Coinciding with the arrival of cut-price digital technology, the aesthetic creed proposed by Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) and Lars von Trier (The Idiots) has resonated with young and indie filmmakers in all continents and been credited with a revival of radical back-to-basics guerrilla-style filmmaking. Many argue it has changed the critical terms in which art and popular cinema are discussed and that it has had an impact on a much wider range of contemporary arts from dance to computer games.
This new book brings together leading scholars from a number of disciplines--film studies, literature, philosophy--in order to focus on some of the keyhistorical and conceptual issues associated with the manifesto's original formulation. In addition to identifying many of the epistemological and aesthetic puzzles to which Dogme 95 gives rise, the book looks at the relationships posited between the avant-garde and popular cinema, the role of "minor cinemas" in a world dominated by Hollywood, and the history and future of art-cinema as a means of cultural exchange between national cinemas.

This is a great book for anyone who would like to capture the spirit of the carnival sideshow, grind show, oddity attraction, etc. There is a ton of great historical information with loads of photos. If you've ever enjoyed a giant animal show - or more - at your local carnival, get this book and see how many traveling wonders were once out there - and still are, here and there. If you're already a collector, this is a must-have book. You'll get great pictures you've not seen before AND learn a lot - I did.

In an age of tyranny, one evil rises above all others.

The Summer of Chaos swept its devastation across the world of Krynn. In its wake, foul dragon overlords of immeasurable power conquered Ansalon and remade the lands in their own image. But Malystryx, the greatest and most evil of all the dragons, is no longer content with ruling her domain. She wants to ascend to godhood, and only one band of stalwart heroes stands in her way.

3 out of 5 stars A good book but the ending left me unsatisfied........2004-04-12

All in all this book was decent. Certainly was not one of the best Dragonlance books I have read. Some parts of it kind of dragged along without a whole lot of suspense to the point that I nearly put it down. It ended very blandly without a true and proper conclusion. As this book was the third and last of three books in a set it would have been better to end the whole adventure. Instead Jean Rabe pushes it even further to three more books in which after this one I truthfully am not looking forward to. This is still a good book to read I enjoyed many parts of it though so it is still worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars The Eve of the Malestrom.......2003-04-11

This is likely one of the greatest dragonlance books ever written. Any one who misses this great addition to the dragon lance seris will be truely sorry. READ THIS BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars Best book of the trilogy.......2003-03-13

As the trilogy progressed, Rabe's writing just got better and better. It went from being awkward and stilted in the first book to very smooth flowing in this last book. It actually felt like a true Dragonlance book and made for some very enjoyable reading. Yes, some of the characters needed to be fleshed out more and they seemed to get mortally wounded and overcome unbeatable odds more than they should have, but those seemed like minor things.

The last half of the book seemed like fight scene after fight scene with minimal rest in between. Rabe has a knack for writing suspenseful battles, despite the fact that they can be a little unbelievable at times (5 people taking on 3 dozen Knights of Takhisis and winning). Her handling of the dragons and the intrigue among them in this book was very well done. I especially enjoyed the introduction of the shadow dragon. There was also an interesting exploration of the undersea kingdome of the sea elves, Dimernesti.

The conclusion, however, seemed a little flat. It seems as if the author wanted to set up another book, be it one of hers or some other author's in the Dragonlance saga. Maybe it continues almost directly into Weis & Hickman's War of Souls or into her own Dhamon Saga. Guess I'll find out when I get to those books.

My only complaint was the need for some serious proofreading. Typos, missing words, incorrect words ("to" instead of "too"), and missing punctuation got to be really excessive. I was surprised at how bad it was. There were pages where I found three or four of these. Of course, this was the previous edition that I read, so maybe they fixed these in this new release.

All in all, a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Even if you hated the first book, I think you'll like this one (just make sure you read the second installment as well).

4 out of 5 stars An interesting ending..........2002-06-24

The Eve of the Maelstrom, by Jean Rabe is a fine conlusion to an otherwise intresting series. Rabe does a great job bringing the heros together to fight against something that has been a problem throughout the whole trilogy: The Overlords.

I happened to find this trilogy exciting and worth the read. It definately leads nicely into Wies and Hickman's War of Souls Trilogy. Granted, Krynn is different in these books. But that doesn't make it any less interesting. In fact, I found these books just as interesting as the Chronicles trilogy that started the Dragonlance world. While these aren't AS good as previous Dragonlance books, they are still quite entertaining.

If you pass up these books cause of the poor reviews that it gets, then you are going to miss an exciting series. The adventure and action seems to never stop in these books. New mysteries are revealed, while others are solved. Finally the heros strike back against the massive Overlords. This book is definately worth the read. Don't pass it up. It sheds light onto the new face of Krynn. A Krynn without the gods.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2001-12-06

After reading most of the Dragonlance books, I finally bought this trilogy. I wasn't expecting much, and I didn't get it. It's a bad sign when your book has 15 pages left with no resolution in sight. Or when you have a "slideshow" telling what happened to the characters because you ran out of space. How many times did these paperdoll characters get burned, scarred, run through and mortally wounded just to get revived by the healer? How many times did we get detailed descriptions of their new outfits but not real personalities? Despite the good idea of dragon overlords, how come no one deals with the problem of food? At the rate they eat, Ansalon should have no people or livestock left. But that, along with so many plot points, is just part of the mystery. Maybe that mystery is why five dragons let a band of humanoids poke, prod and wound them, then let them leave. It's too bad Jean Rabe had to introduce unbeatable, unkillable monsters and found them more fascinating than the characters we had to read about for three books.

                Book Description

This one-of-a-kind book challenges nonprofit leaders (and anyone who runs meetings) to retire Robert's Rules of Order and adopt a simpler, friendlier, and more effective method for conducting meetings--Roberta's Rules of Order. Using traditional sailing ships as a metaphor, meetings and governance expert Alice Collier Cochran helps groups make the journey from the "shore" that represents the culture of Robert's Rules--procedural formality, debate, simple majority rule--to the opposite "shore" of Roberta's Rules--informality, dialogue, and decision-making options.? In doing so, she helps them to conduct friendlier, more effective meetings and to take the first step toward creating flexible, democratic organizations.

1 out of 5 stars A poor replacement for parliamentary procedure.......2007-01-13

                This is a bad book.

The author, who promotes herself as an expert in meetings and apparently one who helps organizations with their meetings, has done her potential audience a grave disservice. For someone who is an 'expert' in meetings to be so horribly ignorant of parliamentary procedure is inexcusible.

It should also be pointed out that "Robert's Rules of Order" is but ONE parliamentary procedure authority, not the only one. RONR may have its problems, but a better solution would be to use ANOTHER parliamentary authority, not toss out the use of parliamentary procedure entirely. Parliamentary procedure was developed over hundreds of years to be a method that groups may use to run their meetings and make decisions. It can be used by groups large and small (from 12 member boards to conventions of several hundred delegates), it can be used by small clubs, societies, and organizations to government bodies large and small.

Because a wide range of groups can use parliamentary procedure, its done in different ways. Small groups are more informal, large groups more rigid. Government bodies will do things that are unnecessary in non-profit clubs.

RONR was designed for non-government groups/organizations, and gives information on how to use it informally for a small group (12 or so) and how it can be scalled to a large group (several hundred).

BTW, the fact that the original author of Robert's was a military officer is unimportant. Roberts made use of already existing parliamentary rules to create his.

Roberta's Rules is a great resource for anyone living in the 21st century who wants to minimize their time in meetings while maximizing the results they achieve. From my perspective as a management consultant and a professional parliamentarian (PRP of the National Association of Parliamentarians), I still encouter so many unproductive meetings. I also find it amazing that in this day and age some meeting leaders and planners think the answer to their problems is to force traditional Robert's Rules of Order onto attendees, even for groups less than 25. Robert's has its place, primarily among delegations numbering hundreds or more. But it is not my tool of choice for a progressive, pluralistic group that wants to encourage dialogue, multiple points of view, and thoughtful decision making in the meetings. When I suggest dropping Robert's for Roberta's or some other form of facilitation that's appropriate for the situation, I'm even more convinced that I've made the right recommendation when the only complaints I get are from those who know Robert's Rules of Order. (Everyone else gives a big sigh of relief.) In my experience, many of those who know Robert's are interested in showing off their knowledge, which makes the meetings more miserable for everyone else and certainly doesn't guarantee a good outcome. The goal should be productive, efficient meetings with good outcomes. Roberta's Rules can help you get everyone on the same page quickly moving in the same direction, which is a huge benefit.

1 out of 5 stars Skip This Dangerous Book.......2004-06-20

I am a fairly experienced parliamentarian and presiding officer with an interest in parliamentary procedure. I strongly recommend against purchasing this book unless you are in an organization which has already (foolishly) adopted it as their parliamentary authority.

I was given a copy of this book when I agreed to act as a parliamentary consultant for a fraternity umbrella organization. They were a newly formed group working on their own bylaws and a member had suggested this book. After reading it, I quickly came to the conclusion that it is nothing more than a bad knock-off of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised. The parts of it which deviate from Robert's Rules are drawbacks rather than selling points, such as the inappropriate definition of a majority and the requirement of a 3/4 vote to do anything (other reviewers have pointed both of these horrid features out). If Roberta's Rules is "more democratic" as has been claimed, it wouldn't allow a small, possibly recalcitrant minority to overrule almost 75% of an organization's members. On a seven person board, two determined people could effectively filibuster and cause business to grind to a halt; is that a good idea?

Roberta's seems to be written on the premise that practically everyone will agree with a proposal if it's talked about and verbally massaged enough. Anyone who lives in the real world of board meetings and policy discussions and decision making knows that this isn't the case. No amount of touchy-feely back-and-forth will ever make some decisions palatable to everyone. People disagree; that's why in most cases a majority should rule, with the right of the minority to disagree is protected. Robert's Rules does this; Roberta's Rules doesn't.

Besides, Robert's Rules of Order recognizes that informality is often useful to small bodies and provides for meetings to be conducted informally. The difference is, with Robert's, the formality is there when needed. With Roberta's, you're on your own when things get complicated.

Roberta's Rules of Order is both poorly executed and poorly conceived. Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, 10th Edition is a much better parliamentary manual. It has benefitted from over 125 years of careful revision and evalution; Roberta's has obviously not. Many misconceptions about Robert's Rules of Order have to do with older editions; ignore the criticisms and go with the gold standard: Robert's Rules, not Roberta's Rules.

2 out of 5 stars For small groups ONLY.......2004-06-20

Robert's Rules Of Order is designed for small groups only (less then twelve). According to Alice Cochran, this book is for non-profit boards with less then 12 members. SO don't use this book for large meetings. Even Alice admits in an interview on "CharityChannel.com" that Robert's is needed for large groups.

Of course, even under Robert's, in particular Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised 10th, for such groups, informality is encourged (See RONR 10th p. 470), and
I don't think Roberta's and Roberts disagree as much as Alice claims in her book. I think this book is likely to contain some good advice for small groups, who generally come together not just to make decisions but also to do "problem solving". She does emphasize bringing proposals to a meeting and not complaints about the past, which is important.

                A couple of complaints:
                1) I opened the book to a random page and found this:
                "A majority vote (50% plus one) .... "
This definition is incorrect, as anyone who understand parliamentary law knows. Majority simply means "more then half".

                2) Recommends that groups require at least 75% in favor of a proposal before adopting it. (Yikes! A small
                minority can cripple that group)

                5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2004-06-12

This is a helpful guidebook for anyone who attends or manages meetings. As the opening cartoon intimates, it shows how to "dispense with the pompous formalities ... and communicate like human beings." Any easy read, it simplifies the meeting management process while providing a number of great ideas to improve results. For example, the chapters clarifying the difference between debate, dialog and discussion can help a group make more productive and better informed decisions.

The sailing images and clear, organized writing made it easy to read the book straight through; since it is full of useful information to apply in a wide variety of circumstances,it will be a favorite reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Nixon was a fine writer!.......2007-10-14

It was risky business for Nixon to write an autobiography for at least a couple of reasons. First, his many detractors would clearly be quick to jump on any discrepancies in the work. Second, as more and more classified information is released by the government, Nixon stood to become a well-documented liar, assuming that there were a few stretchers herein -- and Nixon would have known that such information would be forthcoming someday. Still, he had the brass to write it, and it's a darn fine book.

This autobiography is somewhat unusual in that, not only did Nixon write the book, he also wrote IN to the book, even though he, himself, may not have realized this. In other words, we can tell a LOT about Nixon just by reading between the lines of this one. We can detect when he felt adversarial about someone (the media, for example), and we get a clear feel for some of his well-known (and often well-deserved) paranoia.

Some will bluntly say that Nixon was a crook. Perhaps this is correct but he was an incredibly intelligent and complex man and many positive initiatives were achieved during his long tenure as U.S. President. Of course, he covers all these events in the book and we get a feeling of having the inside scoop for having read about them in this work. So, really, this volume is an excellent "history book" for the era that it covers (essentially, the period from Nixon's birth up through the Watergate affair).

Probably the most profound facet of "R.N." that I picked up on was that Nixon was a huge patriot. He fostered incredibly strong beliefs in manifesting his visions for a great America -- of course, his facilitation of some of those ideas is what got him into trouble.

Nixon remained necessarily vague in certain details of the Watergate scandal and a few cracks in his story have already emerged as a direct result of Privacy Act releases. No doubt, a few more will be forthcoming. But honestly, many of these "events" are simply a matter of perspective, Nixon's paradign versus that of his enemies. In these cases, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

I most enjoyed reading about Nixon and his family as he grew up which is a large portion of the book. Nixon was a hard worker and, frankly, I admire his achievement of becoming President, since he was one of the few who made this life-leap, absent a silver spoon.

I read MANY books (3 a week for years) and "R.N." is one of the top 20 books I've ever read and it's in the top 5 of my non-fiction list. Don't be put off by politics in this instance -- this tome of an autobiography is a real page-turner and well-done.

                5 out of 5 stars I think.........2007-02-16

what this man did was wrong in terms of his involvement and his support of bullying in the whitehouse. This man was seen as one of the most liberal presidents and founded the Environmental Protection agengy as well as food stamps and strove to implement far reaching welfare reforms. He did many things we equivocate with democratic setbacks, and we have to wonder how much the nation suffered. He tried to protect himself under the presidency: Was he attacked? The FBI tried to sheild us from this man, and we have to wonder where the balance lies. Surely this man did great things perhaps as no president has done after him for social reform. Much to ponder. In later years, he confessed to wrongdoing and advised several presidents without want of attention or credit.I tend to like Mr. Nixon, but tend also to grieve his past actions against the war demonstrators in terms of actions he could not implement as he did not have the support of the FBI. The problem was the wire tapping of journalists, and the breaking into a psychiatrists office to try to get info on one of the journalists who oppose Nixon. Yes,much to think about. Am I bothered by racial remarks he's made on tape when he tried to institute the largest welfare program since FDR saved us from the depression? Save for perhaps Kennedy..No. I think his actions counterbalance the remarks he's made. The wiretapping and the break in are his shame, more so the wiretapping as I'm not sure about the extent of the involvement he had in that. I enjoy Mr. Nixon's attempt to guide the nation via advice of succeeding presidents and look forward to reading thE progressive social policy that's in his seven books.

3 out of 5 stars Slice of history from a man who shaped it.......2007-02-02

It's always a wondrous experience delving into the lives of American presidents. By now, the trends seem consistent with each other in several respects: the humble beginnings in a kindly rural area (for Nixon, it was a Puritan home in southern California), the warm anecdotes growing up, life in higher education, early political careers and relationships, and finally the culmination of the presidency. It is a terrific journey for the reader that Nixon led an eventful and important life (the Alger Hiss case, his foreign policy, Vietnam, Watergate, etc). Obviously, Nixon's presidency occurred much before my time, so it is worthwhile to gain insight from a perspective that I will double-back on after pouring through, I am sure, the hundreds of material analyzing Nixon's life.

This hefty tome is not only a warm autobiography, but it is also an insider's account into the astounding 20th century. Nixon shaped the century's most crucial events, such as Vietnam and the Soviet threat, which the memoir documents with appreciative detail. Occasionally, of course, the author slips in an expected self-justification for some wrongdoing that occurred, while sometimes barely addressing others (I found it humorous, about one Nixon tale, how he broke into a college professor's office to peek at his exam results; needless to say it's not here).

This is all standard recounting of important life events from a president, but it stands out for being written by a monumental figure that will forever be tied to political life and, more importantly, to political scandal.

5 out of 5 stars History by the man who caused history.......2006-02-06

I read it twenty-five years ago and just read it again. Fast paced until he gets bogged down in justifying his actions in Watergate. Nixon was an excellent writer, but his self-justification requires you to read other bios of the 37th President. From Jerry Vorhis to Alger Hiss to John Dean, a great take on postwar American history by someone who was there.

5 out of 5 stars RN - A Deeply Flawed, Great Man. Fascinating. .......2005-08-08

Nixon became president the month I was born and had left the scene before I became politically aware. Nobody spoke of him during the 70's, or of Johnson for that matter - they belonged to a past era which nobody much wanted to revisit, and so I knew very little about either of them as a kid or teen.

By resigning Nixon had admitted at least some guilt in the vast number of things he was accused of and his abdication was a political cataclysm. Through my childhood years he lived out his old age as a pariah off in San Clemente, California, the personification of the period of enormous turbulence during the height of the Vietnam war. He was the living embodiment of the dark heart and excess of the GOP, and everyone, especially in Democratic Massachusetts, considered him a cancer on the body politic and was happy he was gone.

But his resignation was sincere and he was mostly contrite. In retirement he was a sad old giant in exile and after a while the Press which had hounded him out of office allowed him some dignity as an elder statesman and left him alone.

He's nothing like the caricature I expected. I have to say - I really like him. He's very thoughtful, well spoken, modest, with good intentions towards the country and had a warm, respectful dialogue with the major statesmen and characters of the day.

It's a beautifully written book. It was easy to see how he had become a leader. He had the air of solid, calm composure and reasonableness which I admire. As for doublespeak tendencies, the clues are missing for someone who didn't live through that time period.

The contrast with Bush could not be more clear. Maybe the candor came from Nixon's retirement, but I can't imagine Bush being this straight and honest with his audience. POTUS 43 isn't smart or eloquent enough to write this kind of book, and he's too secretive to make that leap of trust with the little people to allow them into his mind.

Of course Nixon was at least as bad as Bush - he was famous for having a blind-spot as big as a barn, which one can see in his writing. Despite the resignation, he wasn't entirely remorseful - he saw himself as the victim of many media conspiracies and other antagonists, both real and imagined. But Nixon has the breadth of worldview and honesty with himself, and by extension the reader, to allow us into his world.

His dark tendencies had other origins. In an era when 30 soldiers were being killed in Vietnam every single day - over ten times the volume of Iraq - and the world convulsing in protest and chaos around them, Nixon's lieutenants and were just brutalized by their environment and lost their sense of direction and fought back with every realpolotik' weapon and dirty trick they could imagine.

Nixon himself is much too close to the action to see how complicit he was - and as the leader he was de-facto fully culpable. But he did take responsibility resign over it - so if it is noble to forgive, then he deserves some rest.

My folks on the other hand strongly disliked Nixon because they thought the GOP machine had sabotaged all the moderate Democratic primary candidates, leaving only Muskie and worse, McGovern, who were far too weak and radical. So he had effectively dismantled the American democratic process - even aside from the Watergate bugging and coverup. Nixon's Southern Strategy of making the GOP a safe place for whites upset by the Civil Rights movement, is still the dominant fault-line in American politics.

Now, after the cancer has been lanced and we have survived him, Nixon's transgressions feel like water long past under the bridge. I'm only sad and sorry that he passed away. He was a wise, complex man and this book shows that his shadow is still very large.

1 out of 5 stars What about the Jews of old Jerusalem?.......2006-02-18

According to the Ottomon censuses, Jews made up the majority of Jerusalem residents in the 18th and 19th centuries. My family was part of the Morrocan Jewish community of Jerusalem, which dates back to the middle ages. This community was afflicted with discrimination, poverty and disease, but, in spite of everything survived intact until 1948. After the Jordanian takeover in the Israeli War of Independance, this community was driven out. The ancient synagogues were looted and destroyed, or occupied by squatters, as were the houses of the Jewish refugees. Jewish graves on the Mount of Olives were destroyed, the tombstones used to build roads and houses.

Why is there no mention of of that important history in this book? Why is it invisible? Why do that disservice to a readership deserving of the whole story?

                      1 out of 5 stars Poor education.......2006-02-17

The author is profoundly and deeply ignorant. Jerusalem was a capital of the state of Israel in 1000 BC. Poor education in Middle East history is a typical problem with American academy controlled by Arab money.

                      5 out of 5 stars A thorough book.......2005-09-02

This dry, statistical account is very thorough in documenting the 'fate' of the Palestinian villages around Jerusalem. In all 37 villages are shown to have been evacuated, destroyed or converted during the war. Most infamous of these is Dayr Yassin. Attention is also paid to the religious institutions damaged in the fighting such as the mammoth Notre Dame complex that ended up on the Front line. In the Old CIty and on mt. Zion many Churchs were damaged.

COverage is given to the Christian, Armenain and Muslim communites. The 37 villages spoken of are as far away as 25km in some instances, but some are much closer such as Rahavia or Lifta.

Statistical breakdowns are given of businesses lost, property confiscated and land changing hands. Very detaile descriptions are amde of UN resolutions and attempts to settle financial disputes. Basically the city was divided in 1948 and the Jews of the Old city were depopulated from their quarter by the Jordanian army while many Arabs fled to east jerusalem. This was not exactly a population exchange since the number of Arabs fleeing was much higher then the Jews forced from the old city.

The book is biased. Most damage done to Churchs is always assumed to have been done by Israeli forces rather then jordanian, when the opposite is probably the case. It would be hard to understand how the destruction of Notre Dame or the Ethiopian CHurch in West Jerusalem could have been done by ISraeli artillary unless it was firing at its own positions.

It is also not easy to excuse the blatent fabrications concerning the destruction of the Jewish quarter of the old city. If this book perports to cover property damage from the war it is decidedly one sided as the title implies.

Nevertheless researchers on the war will find the information indespensible, the writing however is lacking in objectivity.

Jerusalem 1948: The Arab Neighbourhoods And Their Fate In The War is a publication of the Institute of Jerusalem Studies and the Badil Resource Center, and offers the Palestinian perspective on the effects that founding the Jewish state of Israel had upon the indigenous Muslim population of Jerusalem. Occasionally illustrated with period photographs, Jerusalem 1948 is an informative, enlightening, candidly descriptive and analytical history that presents a side of Jerusalem's 20th Century history that is all too often overlooked by both academia and the general public. Jerusalem 1948 is a highly recommended, long needed addition to personal, school, and community library Mideast studies reference collections.

                        Book Description

Parents around the world grapple with the common challenge of balancing work and childcare. Despite common problems, the advanced, industrialized nations have developed dramatically different social and labor market policies—policies that vary widely in the level of support they provide for parents and the extent to which they encourage an equal division of labor between parents as they balance work and care. In Families That Work, Janet Gornick and Marcia Meyers take a close look at the family-work policies in the United States and abroad and call for a new and expanded role for the U.S. government in order to bring this country up to the standards taken for granted in many other Western nations.

In many countries in Europe and in Canada, family leave policies grant parents paid time off to care for their young children, and labor market regulations go a long way toward ensuring that work does not overwhelm family obligations. In addition, early childhood education and care programs guarantee access to high-quality care for their children. In most of these countries, policies encourage gender equality by strengthening mothers' ties to employment and encouraging fathers to spend more time caregiving at home. In sharp contrast, Gornick and Meyers show how in the United States—an economy with high labor force participation among both fathers and mothers—parents are left to craft private solutions to the society-wide dilemma of "who will care for the children?" Parents—overwhelmingly mothers—must loosen their ties to the workplace to care for their children; workers are forced to negotiate with their employers, often unsuccessfully, for family leave and reduced work schedules; and parents must purchase care of dubious quality, at high prices, from consumer markets. By leaving child care solutions up to hard-pressed working parents, these private solutions exact a high price in terms of gender inequality in the workplace and at home, family stress and economic insecurity, and—not least—child well-being. Gornick and Meyers show that it is possible—based on the proven experiences of other countries—to enhance child well-being and to increase gender equality by promoting more extensive and egalitarian family leave, work-time, and child care policies.

Families That Work demonstrates convincingly that the United States has much to learn from policies in Europe and in Canada, and that the often-repeated claim that the United States is simply "too different" to draw lessons from other countries is based largely on misperceptions about policies in effect in other countries and the possibility of policy expansion in the United States.
