    Book Description

After a German submarine sank the merchant barkentine Angelus, her ten crew were left to face the cold and merciless north Atlantic in a small open lifeboat without food or water. Over the next ten horrifying days, 24-year-old Walter Boudreau witnessed the death of all but one of his shipmates. Miraculously, Boudreau survived. Just as incredible, this agonizing introduction to life before the mast did nothing to cool his passion for sailing. Over the next four decades, Captain Boudreau's love affair with the sea aboard his various classic schooners took him through nautical adventures both thrilling and extraordinary.

The Man Who Loved Schooners plots an exciting voyage from a shipwreck in the far north and the dramatic rescue of a stranded U.S. naval vessel, to an eerie encounter with a tiger shark. Experience the terror of confronting a 65-foot rogue wave, a fight with drug pirates in the Bahamas, and the onslaught of a vicious hurricane. Journey from Canada's East Coast to the Caribbean islands, across the raging Atlantic and, finally, home to Canada. The trials and tribulations of a life at sea - including the tragic loss of several of Boudreau's beloved schooners - are tempered by the wonderful adventures of life under sail.

In this book, Walter Boudreau's son, Robert Louis (Lou)Boudreau, has chronicled the stories his father passed on to him. As Lou Boudreau writes, "although I have put pen to paper, it is my father who speaks in his own voice."

5 out of 5 stars Life of a real adventurer.........2007-06-06

This is no ordinary tale of the high seas. Louis Boudreau gives a brilliant account of his father's life under sail which epitomises the draw and romanticism of the sea. There are some hair raising moments including encounters with freak waves, pirates and sinkings but there are also some hilarious moments. Walter Boudreau lived his dream and his story makes a damn good read.

Performers make a crucial contribution to narrative films. By moving through exemplary sequences, this book closely follows the movement and behaviour of screen performers - Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Widmark, Joan Bennett, Theresa Wright - and by emphasising their relationship to other aspects of film style - camera, location and plot - it develops accounts that are specific and involved. This study concentrates on films from the 'Golden Age of Hollywood and moment-by-moment descriptions enable fresh interpretations to emerge and evolve. These reveal the significance and intensity of a performer's engagement with the world of a film.

'Andrew Klevan's beautifully conceived and elegantly realized introduction to film performance is not less than a superb introduction to the great art of film as such. For those beyond the introductory stages of understanding their fascination with film, the book will confirm and provide companionship in thinking about the power and the permanence of the memories of films and performances that inhabit our consciousnesses and the disproportionate shallowness of the words we customarily settle for in accounting for these stretches of our lives. For those whose love of various cultures of film, and of their histories, continues as essential to their imaginations of life, the care and pleasure in Andrew Klevan's selection and treatment of his examples are causes for surprise and gratitude.'

Stanley Cavell, Walter M. Cabot Professor Emeritus of Aesthetics and General Theory of Value, Harvard University.

'A first-rate work ... highly original in its approach, beautifully written, and elegantly crafted to make its strong case without wasting a word.'

      Book Description

A brilliant and scathing polemic about the sorry state of the English language and what we can--and must--do about it.

Do you ever leave work wondering whether all of the words exchanged between you and your colleagues in emails and meetings actually had any meaning? You spend the day touching base and networking, workshopping and impacting, strategizing and implementing, going forward with your key performance indicators. No wonder you are exhausted when you leave the office!

Even as English spreads around the globe, the language itself is shrinking. Our vocabularies are increasingly trimmed of subtlety and obscure words are forbidden unless they qualify as economic or business jargon. The constant pressure in our society to be efficient and productive is working like a noose around the neck of the English language.

Don Watson is one of Australia's foremost writers and intellectuals. In Death Sentences, he takes up the fight against the pestilence of bullet points, the scourge of buzzwords, and the dearth of verbs in public discourse. He encourages us to wage war against the personal mission statement and the Powerpoint essay and to take back our language from the corporate wordsmiths and marketeers. BACKCOVER: Praise for Don Watson's Death Sentences:

“Don Watson has written a fine and necessary book. Any citizen who neglects to read it does so at his or her peril.”

      2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Content Betrays a 5-Star Title.......2006-11-13

The author makes excellent points about the wind of pompous, meaningless jargon and deceptive spin that has swept through government, business and academia. I personally trudged through a lot of this muck in the social "sciences" and share the author's concern for the erosion of the language. We are losing our ability (or is it will?) to say what we mean in a way that is easy to understand and worth the reader's time.

Chapter 1 should be digested by everyone whose job requires them to write or speak. In the beginning I thought the book was a 4; by page 58 I was thinking 3 stars; and by chapter 3 it was in freefall. His own writing bogs down in muddy thinking and poorly chosen examples. I lost sight of his sails as he drifted off point and disappeared in a fog of philosophical opportunism.

I still recommend chapter 1, but get it from your library. It's not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Takes the Tux off the bull.......2006-09-09

Clear writing takes the Tux off the bull and reveals it for what it is. No one can say that often enough.

      5 out of 5 stars Death Sentences.......2006-08-23

Anyone whose job requires that they write clearly and compellingly should read this book.

2 out of 5 stars He commits the sin he condemns. .......2006-02-20

Let me dissent from the praise this book has received.

I found Watson's style overblown and pompous. He criticises modern discourse for lacking both passion and clarity. Fair enough. But he confuses the two; passion doesn't make for clarity. Often, the opposite.

Some occasions demand a cool head, and the writing which describes them should reflect that.

For example, Watson spends most of page 31 arguing why he prefers the phrase "universities are under siege" to "universities are under pressure". The second phrase smells of "21st century secular Methodists", whereas the first calls to mind the Trojans, who, like their counterparts in academia, live behind walls and who "have something the besiegers want--not a woman in this case, but their submission certainly."

To use an old-fahioned Australian phrase, get your hand off it. "Under pressure" will do just fine, thanks.

Colour and metaphor are great. But too much makes for verbal sludge, just as thick and gooey as the bureaucratic double-speak Watson criticises.

I really don't need to hear that modern official language obscures rather than informs. Orwell and others established that long ago. Where's the new spin? Watson gives none.

On p. 139, he observes that Martin Luther King knew a good speech is like a song. A good book isn't. I personally found Watson's constant chorus of disgust a little hard to listen to, over and over, gilded with obscure references and going nowhere.

1 out of 5 stars A terrible waste of time!.......2005-10-05

I cannot believe that publisher accepted to bring this book to market. This is a terrible & pointless critic of the language. There is absolutely no substance to this book, only a catchy title! I regret this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Kantar is a Mad Scientist.......2006-12-28

The book covers RKCBW, and keeps on going. Kantar presents some interesting ideas on how to handle different suits. This is definately a PARTNERSHIP book, if you sping any of this on a pick up pard, you will end up in a Grand Slam down 1, or missing a slam.
For example - Kantar proposes that there be 2 sets of Asks. One by the Strong Hand, and one by the Weak hand.

I found it "funny" when Kantar was saying Kickback was too complcated!
        :-)

Anyway, this is a useful book, not just on RCKBW, but on Slam Bidding and Judgment. It's not a fun read (though Kantar has a GREAT sense of humor), but slam bidding is important, and it's worth investing the time with this.

        5 out of 5 stars The "Bible".......2006-05-28

My partner and I call this book the "Bible." Just like the Bible, this book is a difficult read. I have yet to read the entire book. Just like the Bible is the Gospel, this book is the Gospel for Roman KeyCard Blackwood. Very well written in the Kantar style...humorous and it seems like he is in front of you discussing the ideas. For RKB this book is the only way to go.

                Book Description

Ronald Burt describes the social structural theory of competition that has developed through the last two decades. The contrast between perfect competition and monopoly is replaced with a network model of competition. The basic element in this account is the structural hole: a gap between two individuals with complementary resources or information. When the two are connected through a third individual as entrepreneur, the gap is filled, creating important advantages for the entrepreneur. Competitive advantage is a matter of access to structural holes in relation to market transactions.

5 out of 5 stars The network structure of social capital.......2000-04-05

"The Network Structure of Social Capital" by RonaldBurt at the U Chicago Graduate School of Business is one paper thatheld my attention. "Social capital" is a metaphor for the accumulated wealth built up in a personal network; better connected people have more social capital, and as a result they gain advantages in social situations. Burt's thesis is that social capital depends on not just the size of your social network, but also its nature and structure. Here's a brief summary.

If you're looking to get ahead, you should aim to build a circle of work and personal contacts that is broad and diverse. The more diverse your contacts, the more likely it is that you will find an opportunity through them. It's particularly important not to narrow your networking efforts to a single clique of all like-minded people who all know each other and don't mix much with others; maintaining such connections gets in the way of more productive efforts that bring in a steady mix of new faces.

When you have a network that gives you the opportunity to connect two widely diverse parts of an enterprise together, or when you can bring friends together who know you but don't know each other, you stand in the role of _gaudius tertius_, "the third who benefits". Even if you don't explicitly control the relationship (now I don't want to sound too mercenary here; remember, this is social science, not Emily Post) you will still benefit from the control of and access to flow between two elements that have been insulated from each other.

The pieces of an organization's or a population's network that don't communicate much are insulated by what Burt calls "Structural Holes" (the title of one of his books). He goes into detail studying behavior and networks of senior managers in an organization trying to find structural holes and predicting with a fair degree of accuracy who will get ahead in the corporate game by how big people's networks are (bigger is better), how centered their networks are on their bosses (all things equal, you'd rather know people who your boss doesn't -- but take advantage of your boss's network to bootstrap your own) and the overlaps in their contacts networks (be the bridge between people who don't know each other).

A good read, if you're into theory, though a bit of a slog at times. The author appears to bear a bit of a grudge against some fellow academics who disagree with his conclusions - those academics went off and formed a little clique that's busy quoting each other and recommending that senior managers build little cliques within their own companies. I believe that eclectic networks bring the best results persuasion by my nature. (Witness Vacuum.)

                  Book Description

An inspiring message for all ages: Find your inner bird.

If you’re looking for wisdom and joy in your life, go straight to Sesame Street and heed the words of its most beloved and profound resident, Caroll Spinney, who has spent the past thirty-four years in a bird costume (and a trash can) as Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.

Three decades inside a giant puppet have taught Spinney a valuable and surprising lesson:

Being a bird can make you a better person.

In The Wisdom of Big Bird, the living legend of Sesame Street describes how we can all find our inner bird (or grouch).

Each chapter illustrates a piece of useful wisdom Spinney has gleaned from a career in feathers. The lessons Big Bird teaches children every day on Sesame Street are the same ones that have brought Spinney success and satisfaction in his own life.

Warm, witty, and affirming, Caroll Spinney’s memoir proves that being a bird can make you a better and happier person.

“Every day on Sesame Street, we strive to give our innocent young audience the basis of a lifelong education. It is no accident that spending the past thirty-four years in the Bird suit teaching these lessons to others has taught me a few things, too.”—from The Wisdom of Big Bird (and the Dark Genius of Oscar the Grouch)

5 out of 5 stars Interesting tid-bits about the behind the scenes of Sesame Street.......2007-10-13

The book was easy reading, took me about 3 hours and filled with life stories/lesson's from Caroll Spinney, the man behind Big Bird & Oscar the Grouch. I laughed and cried and totally enjoyed the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Big Bird Heart all the way.......2007-09-03

A fun read. Carol Spinney is a man whom I never knew much about besides seeing his name in the credits of Sesame Street, and other productions where Big Bird made an appearance.

It was interesting to read about how Big Bird's character was developed, and how just playing the part of a lovable children's icon changed Carol's life.

                  Worth your time. For sure.

                  5 out of 5 stars Carroll Spinney.......2007-02-17

I'm still in the middle of reading this book. but, I'm admiring the work of Carroll very much and every time I look at Big Bird or Oscar now I imagine the position that Carroll is in to make the muppet come to life.

                  5 out of 5 stars What a fun book.......2007-01-07

Anyone familiar with Big Bird will truly appreciate Spinney's book. The accounts of everything that happened to Spinner over the years is simply incredible. While this is a very quick read, it is well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book by a wonderful man behind the feathers.......2006-01-31

Big Bird is a wonderful, kind-hearted creature, because Caroll Spinney is a gentle, kind-hearted man. His uplifting memoirs about his life bringing Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to life and making them very real beings to millions of children and adults, alike, are truly beautiful. Caroll is a very effective writer and illustrator, alike, and his tales brought joy to me as I read every one of them. I was especially touched by his chapter on doing Big Bird in China with the little girl and the goodbye they had at the airport. I was equally moved by his inherrent love and genuine affection for the puppets around him, described best by his picking Ernie up off the floor and apologizing to him for Jim's having unceremoniously dropped him there. One of my favorite lines in the book was near the end when he talked about the new folks and new format; at one point he said, "Then came Elmo." Those of us classic Sesame Street purists understood that line on a molecular level! Most significant for me was one of the messages of wisdom Caroll so eloquently describes. He says that sometimes you realize that your life is exactly how you always wanted it to be. I read this and realized that for myself, that was absolutely true, and I hadn't realized it till just that moment. I am a huge Sesame Street fan, and I'm so proud that my son has become one, too (he's nuts about Elmo, but equally gaga over Big Bird in Journey to Ernie). And this easy read made me feel warm and nostalgic. I've always understood Big Bird, and now I understand him -- and Oscar, not to mention Caroll -- alot better. Thank you, Caroll, for sharing your life in feathers and grouchland and for writing this wonderful book that spoke to me so deeply.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for leading high performance teams!!.......1998-09-11

Dr. Holton has performed superbly in extracting the essence of Lee the man, the soldier, leader and hero from a variety of primary source materials. His alignment of these quotes from Lee and those who knew him to some 119 characteristics of leadership is riveting and true.

Arranged alphabetically, Holton covers a wide range of leadership characteristics-from courage to management by objectives and virtual reality-that unmask problems and bottle necks in almost any private or public corporate structure. Personnel from any level in the corporate structure will find this readable, easily understood, and immediately applicable to their area of work.

This is a must for any organization that is or already has shifted to self-directed or high performance team management. Lee was a master of this strategy, and the details of his skill show clearly through Dr. Holton's work.

Having read extensively of the literature on Lee's command of the Army of Northern Virginia, I was very impressed with Dr. Holton's skill in matching the excerpts from primary sources of Lee's career with the 119 management concepts presented in this compact, 158 page, guide to leadership.

The only quote that I missed seeing in my reading of this work, which would have only added to the character portrait Holton develops, is a paragraph from the January 21, 1993 Congressional Record:

"Robert E. Lee's religious conviction was clearly expressed in his sense of honor and duty. He revealed this in a note he wrote to himself: 'There is a true glory and a true honor: the glory of duty done--the honor of the integrity of principle."

5 out of 5 stars Useful study of leadership........1997-09-22

Robert E. Lee was not only one of the greatest soldiers of all time, his managerial ability and leadership enabled him to withstand overwhelming odds for four years and emerge with the love and respect of all who knew him.
While few of us can muster the sterling qualities (and patriotic impetus) of Marse Bob, we can yet benefit from his wisdom and integrity, and aspire at least to emulate the qualities which made him one of the most respected figures in American history.
The present work is a companion to "From Battlefield to Bottom Line", a study of U.S. Grant's leadership, by the same author. Both are highly recommended to anyone who wishes to learn leadership from two masters.

                  Book Description

This moving dialogue between an American and a Japanese peace activist makes the compelling argument that ordinary people can and must guide their leaders to a safer and saner future free from a nuclear menace. This balance of Western and Eastern perspectives reveals how the development of true peace can grow only when narrow national loyalties are surpassed by a shared global vision. Inspiring examples of individuals working for an end to the nuclear threat showcase the role everyday people can play in the quest for peace. Particular encouragement is given to young people to build on their natural idealism to shape the world they will inherit.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be retitled "Choose Peace!".......2003-12-21

Yeah, choose Peace. This is the heart of Nichiren Buddhism----which is what SGI President Daisaku Ikeda practices. This book, Choose Hope, is a fantastic analysis on humanism and democracy. What's more is how we as human beings should be thinking of ways how to prevent war, not to extend it or prepare when it happens. As strongly emphasized by this book, preventing war/conflict is the absolute purpose of humanity.

1st Soka Gakkai President Makiguchi once taught during World War 2 that our objective must to prolong peace and to think of means to prevent it... not to find means to harm others and harm our nation---which in turn harms our world.

Purcahse this book and learn of the compiled humanistic values expounded by Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Daisaku Ikeda. It's worth every cent of your penny.

5 out of 5 stars Some factual background about the co-author.......2003-06-18

The co-author of this book, Daisaku Ikeda, is the president of a lay Buddhist organization called Sokka Gakai International(SGI). Weather a person practices buddhism or not the facts speak for themselve. SGI with Mr. Ikeda's leadership has help millions of people live happy productive lives and the world is a better place for it. As for the born again Christians who want to bring their Bibles to Buddhist meetings so they can proselytize their own faith I say this. Your waisting your time and your efforts are not appreciated. Have a great day.

Choose Hope: Your Role In Waging Peace In The Nuclear Age by David Krieger (President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation) and Daisaku Ikeda (President of the Soka Gakkai International and recipient of the 1983 United Nations Peace Award), is an uplifting, inspiring, and practical inquiry into what ordinary people can do to help eliminate the threat of nuclear war. Individual chapters address the critical importance of nongovernmental organizations, the future of the United Nations, the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and much, much more. Choose Hope is a highly recommended reading for anyone concerned with the proliferation of nuclear weapons technology and the resultant, globally engaging threat of nuclear warfare in these troubled times.
