A goldmine of early Oregon history.......2002-11-08

I checked out this book from the local library while researching Eloisa, Dr McLaughlin's daughter, for a character study. It has everything a reenactor or history enthusiast would want: several points of view on major historical events, and analyses as to which is more likely to be accurate. Many photos, both of the period and of the historical sites today. Great attention to geneological details, but not at all a dry read. There are chapters highlighting each member of the family, including inlaws. I was able to reconstruct what life at the Fort must have been like for the family, and the journal exerpts personized many famous people who we normally only know by name. I am a native northwestener, and thought I knew everything there was to know about the history of the Columbia. Maybe now I do.

Why I was not completely satisfied.......2006-08-14

I have enjoyed Crossword puzzles for many years. Unfortunately I often need help. For assistance I have used "Webster's Offical Crossword Puzzle Dictionary," copyright 1981 by Merriam Co. Needless to say I needed an update dictionary. When I saw this book advertized I thought it was just what I needed and ordered it imnmediately. If I had seen a copy of this book first, I would never have ordered it. This book is impossible to read. All info is run together and difficult to dicipher.
I do like the fact that this dictionary includes the first names of authors, painters, Nobel prize winners etc. I guess you can't have everything?? I still use my dated dictionary and refer to my new one only when necessary.

Crossword puzzles are one of my favorite pastimes. Unfortunately I don't always know the answer to every clue. This new dictionary is an excellent resource book to assist any crossword puzzle fan in solving puzzles... The format is very easy to follow, and will be my new constant companion in my daily forays into the world of crossword puzzles. Any puzzle solver will be able to hone their skills with this book by their side...

My boss is a Real Estate agent and uses this book all the time to help write the ads for her listings. She has used it so much that it was coming apart so I purchased a new one for her for Christmas. It will be well used again in the coming years!

The book has a ton of ads but some of them are a bit dated. If you take a line from a couple, it will usually get the creative juices flowing.

I work on a team with 2 other realtors and each week when we get together to go over our advertising we're always looking for a "unique" or "powerful" ad. This book has hundreds of great ideas and fully written ads. The best part is that you can piece together parts from different ads to get the ideal one for the property you're advertising.

I would have given it five stars, but some of the categories of property types they give ads for I never see, let alone list, and some of the ones I do list are not included (for example Planned Unit Developments).

Overall a super reference and well worth the investment.

I REALLY LIKED THIS LITTLE BOOK BECAUSE THERES NOTHING LIKE READING ABOUT SOUTHERN PEOPLE AND SOUTHERN WAYS. IT WAS JUST A WONDERFUL LAID BACK MOOD. VERY RELAXING TO READ.

Excellent portrait of the South.......2007-01-14

The reviews of this book vary widely from Capote fans that treasure every shred of information to those that feel the book recycles known information to others critical of the co-author. I am a Capote fan and do treasure information on Truman. The book is short but I found it well written and fascinating. The text also captures the Southern frame of mind so common among those raised in the South (as I was). In addition, the hardcover is an attractive book and will stay on my shelf for years to come. It has a high quality binding; the dust jacket and interior are handsome and well made. Given the price, not only is it a fine volume for Capote fans but it is a good value.

A disappointment.......2006-07-31

The prologue is almost as long as the book, which is hardly more than an essay. I read it in 15 minutes. Sweet stories but hardly worth the price.

simply fascinating.......2001-01-26

This book has so much detail in such few chapters. This story tells how Truman was first left to stay at Jenny's house..Also featuring the special tree house, the bone fence and the Sunday dinners. All these stories were wonderful. I've never read such interesting, real detail about Truman's life..this book is a must have for every Capote fan. Way to go Marie

The truth is not for sale.......2007-01-12

I am someone who actually worked on this book when it was published years ago. When I read the manuscript in preparation for publication, I was thrilled. Unlike the Zionist critics, or those afraid to see the world as it is, I was not afraid of the damning analysis of my country and of my ethnic breatheren. Though I may be a Jew, I do not not hold with Zionism and its hatreds. I love this book. We should be thankful that Chomsky stands where does, shoots for the truth, and challenges us to lay down our biases while on the joureny to enlightenment.

Noam Chomsky has thrived greatly in this great country of his, yours, and mine - the United States of America. He has made millions of dollars teaching, lecturing, selling his books, and investing. His world-wide fame in psycholinguistics is well-deserved. His infamy is merited for his lack of loyalty to his own Jewish ethnicity and the U.S., in spite of the fruits he has received by being a citizen of the United States. He has repaid this country in bile with his incredibly biased analysis of American foreign policy. He goes way beyond a balanced multiculturism, when he always ranks the U.S. and Israel as foremost among the terrorist forces in the world now, and even in history. His distrust of any authority, benign or otherwise, is reflected in his dogmatic and unexamined support of the "underdog," even if that underdog is a suicide bomber or a major terrorist organization such as Al Queda or Hezbollah.

Yet since 1955, hypocrite Chomsky has worked for the "overdog" Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which has actively and enthusiastically participated in the development of weapons of War and mass destruction, and continues to this very day.

Chomsky trumps his own potential for gifted analytic objectivity with his simple hatred of the United States and the Jewish State.

If he were not so attached to the freedom of making money, earning the adulation of the American Left, and freedom to express himself, he might be able to give more direct and personal support for our enemies and his friends by taking up residence in North Korea, Iran, or Syria. Let us hope he retires outside of our homeland that he hates so much, the United States of America.

God Bless America, which will continue to give Chomsky the right to speak, teach, and make lots of money.

An excellent mind stimulating analysis and critique in the Chomsky tradition!.......2006-02-25

Professor Noam Chomsky deserves a literary award for this scholarly treatise that exposes the hypocrisies and selective standards the big powers use with respect to the
word "terrorism." Chomsky brilliantly illustrates that by the internationally accepted definition of the word terrorism, the Western powers are guilty of state sponsored terrorism by their support of attrocities against Third World peoples such as the
Palestinains, Kurds, East Timorese, and others.

The convenient countries that are targeted for sanctions against terrorism are Iraq, Iran, Syria, Cuba, and North Korea. Chomsky argues that should a leader who supports
Western expansionism and domination such as the Shah of Iran or Ferdinand Marcos of the Phillipines
arise, the countries will be termed "friendly" and "moderate" like the Gulf potentates and Indonesia.

I thorougly enjoyed reading this book and others by the same author. Chomsky consistently points out the mistakes and fallacies of policy makers through his superb
mastery of polemics and prose. His style is entertaining and never loses my interest. I suggest any prospective student in international relations be required to read this text by
one of America's leading dissident voices, particularly in this time of "war on terror," which has been advocated and advanced by the Bush Administration.

One of Chomsky's best.......2006-02-10

I am personally flabbergasted at Susan Norton's review. It's utter twaddle. Did she read the book? Chomsky, in case after case, many times using the mainstream "free" press as a source, conveys the absolute savagery and hyorcrisy of the U.S.'s #1 client state regime, Israel. One might be skeptical of what he is saying when one begins to read the book, but when he uses, perhaps, over 100 hundred cases that prove his points then it really becomes hard to refute what he is saying. Did Susan Norton take a look at just how incredibly extensive Chomsky's sources are? They're astronomically broad! They range from independent sources such as Amnesty International, and other human rights groups, declassified U.S. documents, the American and Israeli Commissar class, and others from the heart of the American Empire! (Just to name a few).

This book really helps put the Arab-Israeli conflict into a proper political context. Remember this is not necessarily a history book per se, but a record of terrorism committed by ISRAEL and the UNITED STATES and how their terrorism far outweighs Palestinian terrorism. Conventional wisdom would have you believe the opposite and Chomsky provides the reasons why.

A sewer of a book.......2003-12-02

If has been said (by the late Australian political scientist Frank Knopfelmacher) that as one swallow doesn't make a summer, so one Noam Chomsky doesn't make a sewer. After reading this I'm nor so sure. A warped, twisted rant against the institutions of a free society, against America's brave role in protecting the Jews of Israel from a second, terminal, holocaust, and in general against civilization. Sad and bizarre. I would recommend the works of Danial Pipes, Samuel Hungtington or almost anyone else in preference.
