Films of Hedy Lamarr.......2001-11-24
For all the fans of Hedy Lamarr, this is the ultimate book. All her films are reviewed, and her remarkable life is detailed by Christopher Young, who obviously keeps her on a pedestal throughout. The book contains hundreds of photographs of Hedy, which proves again that indeed, she was "the fairest of them all." It is deeply regretted that this book has been out of print for years. . .would that the publishers would reintroduce it to her many admirers, old as well as new. It is now all the more valuable since her death on January l9, 2000.

Good set of essays; not Wolfe's best.......2003-02-06
Tom Wolfe pursues the idea that many Americans and Brits since World War II have been checking out of mainstream status competition in favor of pursuing status within distinct subcultures. This plays out in some interesting ways--most notably Wolfe watches Natalie Wood pursue status in a more traditional way by acquiring knowledge of art and even some Old Masters, while others play their own status game around photographing celebrities, in this case Wood herself. Essays on Hugh Hefner, California surf culture, and London mods are also worthwhile, as is a comic piece on Wolfe's misadventures with an "automated hotel". Wolfe does bog down at times, however, in the minute stylistic details of the groups he covers; if you are not that interested in style in and of itself, your eyes may glaze over those passages. Still, this is a good read for anyone interested in subcultures (especially of the 1960s) and status-seeking.
"The Pump House Gang" story only: Close but no cigar........1999-03-04
Because I grew up in La Jolla, and graduated from La Jolla High School, class of 1962, I was only interested in the short story: "The Pump House Gang."
I know most of the characters in the story, and believe that Wolfe did a good job describing them. His account of the La Jollans visiting the Watts Riots was right on. I visited the riot zone myself, and enjoyed the same experiences as Shine, Nelander, and Sterncorb.
Wolfe came as close as any "outsider" has been able to do, in analyzing the La Jolla nut house, the institution where the walls fell down, and none of the inmates left.
A social critic a la carte.......1998-11-30
Tom Wolfe is brilliant in capturing a generation's feel. This collection of short stories describes the socialites, the freaks and the trend-setters. Wolfe's language manages to show the physical as well as the atmosphere within a few short sentences. If you liked his wit in "The Electric Cool-Aid Acid Test" and his observations (social x-rays) in "Bonfire of the Vaities," you will love this collection of social critical essays.

Book Description
Thinking to stay ahead of change
In a complex business climate, people need to make informed decisions and learn how to think flexibly. A leader's most important asset is the ability to sense changes in the environment and adapt to them quickly. The Prepared Mind of a Leader presents an original and effective way to think more flexibly about innovation, strategy, change, and problem solving. It helps leaders anticipate challenges and prepare for both the intended and unintended consequences of change by laying out a program for developing, maintaining, and mobilizing eight key skills: Observing, Challenging, Reflecting, Reasoning, Imagining, Deciding, Learning, and Teaching. These skills provide a framework that the thoughtful leader or manager can use to approach issues of strategy, innovation, and more. Chapters feature interactive tools that will help readers develop each of the key skills.
Bill Welter (Bartlett, IL) is President of Adaptive Strategies, a consulting firm focused on helping clients in a wide range of industries to deal with change. Jean Egmon (Wilmette, IL) is Director of the Complexity in Action Network and on the faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Prepared Leader.......2006-04-03
We are all leaders in our own way. Egmond and Welter provide a practical yet challenging path to help us take this learned skill to the next level. A good read for those willing to reflect upon and challenge their own leadership style with the thought that some new thinking might make them more effective.
Thought provoking and a real call to action!.......2006-02-23
I enjoyed the book, both for the insight it provided and the way that questions were asked. This style forced me to think about the issues and reflect on their meaning to my business life.
This is a great book to take on your next airline flight....it will make the time go by quickly.
Here's Something New.......2005-11-11
Most corporate training teaches you what to think. This book teaches you how to think. And how important a skill it is these days, with change coming at breakneck speed and uncertainty at a decades-long high.
Above all, "The Prepared Mind" outlines a systematic approach to thinking, even with regard to such seemingly unsystematic activites like imagining. The book is chock-full of theoretical principles and insights, so, unless you have a background in educational theory and psychology, don't expect to breeze through it and magically turn yourself into a Prepared Mind leader. This is information that should be absorbed slowly and reflectively. I found it very helpful to pause often and remember situations where the thinking principles really applied.
Bottom line: Opportunities are hard to come by these days. A leaders who is prepared will find them and organize his/her company to exploit them.

Customer Reviews:
A mediocre life yields a mediocre memoir.......2007-09-14
This book isn't terrible. If I could I'd give it 2.5 stars.
E Lynn Harris is black, and gay. This fact is stated so many times in the book that it is a wonder the book isn't titled "MY LIFE SUCKED BECAUSE I'M BLACK AND GAY, BUT MOSTLY BECAUSE I'M BLACK!!!! DID I MENTION I'M GAY!???!!!!!!" Seriously, all in caps, just like that, that should be the title of this book.
Lynn Harris is exactly the type of person I have zero interest in knowing. Nothing is ever his fault. He doesn't work hard, fails at everything, gets a second chance due to being the same race as his boss, or is accepted without proper qualifications because of affirmative action in the 70's.
But then... then he starts to succeed. He becomes a salesman, and you know what, he's good at that. Sure he didn't have the qualifications for the job and was initially hired because he was black, but it turns out that he is actually -good- at what he does. So does that success and greatness become a large part of the story? No, of course not, outside of work his entire life is a mess and he goes from closet case guy to closet case guy wondering why they treat him so poorly... while these guys still have girlfriends. Nothing is ever Lynn's fault of course.
Give me a break.
If you want to hear what it's like to be a complete loser, this is the story for you. You'll be fascinated by how self defeating one man can be.
The kicker is that at exactly 7 hours and 30 minutes in Lynn nails it down perfectly "...who would be interested in reading a story about a sexually confused black man who basically wasted ever opportunity given to him." Not me.
Amazing storu told of someones life .......2007-09-06
At some point I felt as if alot of his friends reflected many of his characters which and while after reading you discover they did lend him inspiration. It must have been very difficult to point out his flaws to his readers , and it was done very well at that. Most people prolly wouldnt want to reveal there past so openly to the public but E. Lynn did it and I can respect that.
Brokenhearted..........2007-04-18
Follow Harris on his journey of revelations about life and love in this well-written, east-to-read memoir. Within the first couple of pages, I burst into laughter, then as the story unfolded, I felt kind of bad for Harris. The abuse he suffered at the hands of his step-father and then the destructive life he led during his adult life makes you wonder how he survived it all, suicide attempts and everything. I think I've read all of E. Lynn's books and this one really shows you from where all of his prior offerings evolve. I'm glad that at the time this was published he had found the love he was searching for. I hope that love continues.
Beautiful and Strong.......2006-12-02
What Becomes of a Broken Heart. In it, E Lynn Harris offers a tough and tender glimpse of the man between the covers of more than a few literary sensations. The raw emotional honesty is heartbreaking at times, yet redeeming at others. Through some of the roughest storms, he blooms, beautiful and strong.
truly remarkable..........2005-12-27
I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of E. Lynn's work and by far this was the best. I cried, laughed and got upset several while reading this book. Truly it was remarkable.

Book Description
When Southerners fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, John Beatty left his bank job in Ohio to answer President Lincoln’s call for soldiers. Within a short while he was commanding the Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, as green to combat as his men. The diary he kept from June 1861 to January 1864 shows how well they did their fearful job without losing their humanity.
In October 1862 the Ohio regiment lost nearly forty percent of its five hundred men on the field at Perryville. After heavy fighting at Stone’s River the following year, Beatty was promoted to brigadier general. In these pages the cost of union is carefully weighed by an intelligent and modest man who never glorifies war. Advancing through the South with the Army of the Cumberland, he lives to tell about the horrific battles at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Whether describing large events in Kentucky, Tennessee, and elsewhere or the quiet times of camp life, Beatty never loses personal perspective
Steven E. Woodworth, in his introduction, writes about the life of this extraordinary “ordinary man,” whose diary, originally published in 1879, “stands out as one of the dozen or so best memoirs of the Civil War for its clarity, honesty, humor, and plain good sense.”
Customer Reviews:
War Is Hell (of a Good Book).......2007-02-18
This soldier's journal from the American Civil War is a delight to read, beautifully written and insightful throughout. John Beatty was sensitive to the horror of war, but also to the humor of it. History has been kind to an author who, in writing this book, was very kind to history.

Customer Reviews:
Non-biased views of important global issues.......2007-04-05
This book is a very good introduction on many global issues. The chapter with the case study of FGM is particulary interesting. Kelleher does a good job of representing both sides of an issue without producing a bias or preference towards one. The book is also at a pretty basic comprehension level so it is easy for most adults to read.
