The long-awaited definitive study........1998-12-06
Given all the books that have been written about the Tudor period it is extraordinary that none has covered Thomas Howard, the 3rd Duke of Norfolk. He lived through the reigns from Henry VII to Mary and played a major part in the maintenance of the Tudor grip on England. He even survived being sentenced to death for treason under Henry VIII, and spending Edward VI's reign in the Tower. Not bad for a staunchly conservative man of Catholic persuasions. (He avoided the block because Henry VIII chose the day appointed for his execution to die). Thomas Howard was released in the reign of Mary and died shortly afterwards at the age of 80. It is hard to think of any other aristocrat who was so fortunate. However, for once in the Tudor period, justice was done; he had backed his sovereign through thick and thin. Indeed, he has been much maligned as being no more than a 'yes-man' to Henry VIII and none too bright with it. But although he made no great claims to learning his contribution was immense. He communicated directly with diplomats, accumulated many works of art (preserving several of the Holbein portraits that are increasingly well-known today). He is perhaps best thought of as the last of the feudal lords, able to raise effective armies almost at will (though always in the interests of his liege sovereign).
David Head is apologetic about the length of time it has taken to produce this work, which has been gestating for over a decade, notwithstanding that it formed the basis of his doctoral thesis. However it is clear to the educated eye that a colossal amount of work has gone into it. It is increasingly rarely that one can read a history book and be sure that it is entirely the work of the person whose name appears on the cover. Possibly the reason no-one has attempted a similar work to this in the intervening period is that its reputation for excellence and academic rigour (sorry, I'm English!) travels before it.
This book is worth every penny to the serious scholar, although it may come as a bit of a shock to those who thought that Tudor History and Antonia Fraser were synonymous!

Fun & Inspiring!.......1998-12-29
Sports fans will have a good time with this book! How did they find all those tidbits to put in here? The sports trivia experts in my family are already fighting over who looks at the book next. Fear not, baseball fans -- until baseball season is back in full swing, you've got this book to keep you company during the cold winter months.

Exposes the scams and come-ons prevalent in the glamorous world of acting and modeling.
Customer Reviews:
OBVIOUS AND SENSATIONALISTIC.......2001-09-10
Of course it is essential to be informed about this and any industry in which one plans to become involved. But this book is intended to be sensational, to scare poor parents into fearing for their daughter's (or son's) safety and psychological health. All good parents already fear this. Some step-by-step instruction and real information on how to find your place in the industry, how to deal with agents and clients and sensible advice on communicating effectively with your teenager (who wants to model) would be far more helpful
The Most Important Book Written On The Industry.......2000-02-13
MUST HAVE This book is crucial for your collection! The Glam Scam should be on every single bookshelf, regardless of which aspect of the industry you work in.
Enough praise cannot be given for the value... the back blurbs are not hype -- this is the most important book to read for anyone even considering a career in the Entertainment Industry.
Exceptionally well organized, and packed with informative content... Mr Joseph is well spoken as he not only covers the monetary scams, but also those of a more dangerous nature.
If you don't believe the praise, visit your local library and read just the first few pages -- I can guarantee you'll be racing to pick up your own copy... and when done, you'll feel grateful you did as well. After years in the industry, I continue to praise this work, and refer to it often when guiding others in the industry...
This book is a definite Must Have on very single bookshelf...

Book Description
Meghan Daum is one of the most celebrated nonfiction writers of her generation, widely recognized for the fresh, provocative approach with which she unearths hidden fault lines in the American landscape. From her well-remembered New Yorker essays about the financial demands of big-city ambition and the ethereal, strangely old-fashioned allure of cyber relationships to her dazzlingly hilarious riff in Harper's about musical passions that give way to middle-brow paraphernalia, Daum delves into the center of things while closely examining the detritus that spills out along the way. She speaks to questions at the root of the contemporary experience, from the search for authenticity and interpersonal connection in a society defined by consumerism and media; to the disenchantment of working in a "glamour profession"; to the catastrophic effects of living among New York City's terminal hipsters. With precision and well-balanced irony, Daum implicates herself as readily as she does the targets that fascinate and horrify her. In a review of The KGB Bar Reader, in which Daphne Merkin singled out Daum's essay about the inability to mourn a friend's death, Merkin wrote: "It's brutally quick, the way this happens, this falling in love with a writer's style. Daum's story hooked me by the second line. Hmm, I thought, this is a writer worth suspending my routines for."

Tortured Pleasure.......2006-11-01
Having purchased this book based upon an Amazon rec, I spent the first chapter cursing Meghan Daum and Jeff Bezos. It was EXCRUTIATINGLY true of everything I know about young adult life in New York City, and I hated having it served up to me in such precise, laboriously correct fashion. However, I persisted, and was ultimately rewarded by much of what I read...finally succumbing altogether when I reached the "Music is My Bag" segment; as one bearing the viciously peculiar scars of an adolescent oboe experience, I laughed OUT LOUD during a morning rush-hour train ride, and forgave everything remotely unsatisfying that had come before. Anyone who has ever had the burden of Eccentricity as Excellence imposed by a parent, for whatever reason, will both cringe and rejoice at this INCREDIBLY detailed accounting of what it costs to be too smart and unique for the flute (or its functional equivalent--name the field). Congratulations, Meghan: You finally put down that heinous 'horn' and its attendant reed making, as did I, and never looked back. I fantasize that someday I'll have the privilege of recounting "The Horror of Interlochen (Michigan) All-State Orchestra 1979" to you over coffee...I thank you for giving voice to every over-achiever who's ever questioned the mission we were unwittingly assigned, and found the courage to defy the twin tyrannies of conformity AND its evil twin, The Subculture of Bagdom.
Excellent writing.......2003-10-23
So often you read a highly recommended book, even an award-winning book, and it stinks. This is why I generally read 19th century fiction....but along comes Meghan Daum and what a refreshing discovery. She is an excellent writer - clear, direct, authoritative, and very funny. It's strange in a way, to be reading about my own generation from one of its members. Her recollections of the 80's made me laugh out loud. And the essay about carpet was brilliant - I felt as though it had been written about me. She puts into words so many ideas, thoughts, and feeling that I have had but could never properly articulate. It seems that the Generation X'ers are finally getting a chance on the stage. I hope she writes about the insufferable arrogance of the baby-boomers.
The Truth will set you free.......2003-07-11
I found MY MISSPENT YOUTH almost too painful to read. Thankfully I stuck with her wonderfully written essays and can say I'm a better man for it. I too suffered at the hands of a New York City and almost went bankrupt trying to self-actualize on my creative ambitions. The big break never happened, something that never factored into the game plan. New York City, that place drives me nuts!
I just can't help but talk about my plight because what Meghan perfectly verbalized in MY MISSPENT YOUTH captures my New York experience and my twenties in ways I could never articulate. And at the root of her essays Meghan subtly answers the meaning of life. For real! That is, the meaning of life for those who failed.
oh stinky.......2002-09-17
Don't waste your time with this dreck. go get Dan Zevin's "The Day I Turned Uncool: Confessions of a Reluctant Grown-up."
My relationship with Meghan.......2002-07-19
I fell in love with Meghan while reading her book but our love was short-lived, as I'm not compatible with Meghan for reasons you can guess while turning these pages. It is the sort of love that doesn't leave you because it cannot ultimately be satisfying, but rather the kind of compromised love one would possess after the slow realization that the person one is planning marriage with is simply a little too much this or not quite enough that. I don't find Meghan arrogant or annoying, and I understand her repugnance for carpeting. I may not agree with all of her social and material preferences but I endlessly admire the conviction of her idiosyncratic nature. Meghan, if you're reading this: please do write again.

The authors are great at introducing the reader to all aspects of starting their own shop.......2006-05-08
"HOW TO OPEN A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL RETAIL & GOURMET FOODS SHOP" by Sharon L. Fullen and Douglas R. Brown.
Starting your own business can be extremely scary, it doesn't matter what type of business it is. If you are interested in starting a specialty foods shop it can be even scarier because of the lack of competent information available. "How to Open a Financially Successful Specialty retail & gourmet foods shop" is one of the most comprehensive books of its kind in the market place.
The authors are great at introducing the reader to all aspects of starting their own shop. The book is written in an easy to understand conversational tone. With sections specifically on goal setting this book is geared toward the new entrepreneur that does not have past business start up experience.
Read this book before going even considering opening a specialty retail or gourmet foods shop. Many aspects of operating a specialty business can be overlooking in the heat of your ambitions. This book will guide you in identifying all the major areas of concern before you put up all your money and invest months of your time.
The book also comes with a CD that contains pre-written documents that will be very useful in starting and operating your business. This book is highly recommended to anyone who wants to know more about the gourmet foods industry and of course to people interested in starting their own specialty foods shop.
Great Book!.......2006-04-19
The book begins with an overview of what a gourmet shop consists of and how much energy is needed in order to successfully run one. This book gives a complete picture of everything that is needed to run a successful gourmet store. It is comprehensive enough for someone who has never opened a business before to easily start a shop.
It goes into great details of the initial costs and strategies that will be needed at start up. There is even a special section on franchising and writing a business plan. Other areas include taxes, laws, licenses, and insurances that will be needed. There are also skillfully crafted chapters which focus two main areas employee relations and customers including marketing and public relations.

This book offers a comprehensive overview on many of how to start a Specialty Retail business and with the step by step process, anyone can be successful.
Good Read.......2006-04-13
"How to Open a Financially Successful Specialty Retail and Gourmet Foods Shop" is a great read for anyone looking to own their own specialty or niche store. From selling only jam to selling complex kitchen gadgets, this book is great for anyone looking to delve into any niche market.
The authors take readers through a number of get ready steps. They include, among other things, picking location, deciding what merchandise to carry, identifying the target audience, writing a business plan, filing the loan application, and getting the necessities (such as company name, licenses, insurance, etc.).
I love that the book details every thing I would need to know about opening a specialty business. It even discusses decorating tips, hiring a staff, marketing the business, and creating a press kit. Because the book covers so much, it tends to cover only the basics of all the topics. It does not go really in-depth on most items, so if you are looking for some exact how-to guide, this book probably is not for you.
The book also comes with a handy cd-rom that provides sample business plans and other worksheets that I found very helpful. You can easily take the business plan and modify it to suit your start-up business. In addition, there are a number of great resources listed within the pages of the book that any new business owner would find beneficial.
User-Friendly, Quality Advice.......2006-04-11
Perhaps the best piece of information in this handy guide by Sharon Fullen and Douglas Brown is
found on the first couple of pages: make sure your heart is in before you take the leap. They offer nuggets of advice to test your mettle; such as coming up with a short "elevator pitch" to capture the essence of your dream and how valuable careful research becomes if you want to discover your true "niche" market. Information on buying a franchise or starting from scratch, financial avenues to consider and a good outline for a business plan quickly follows. Other chapters present the importance of customer service, successful marketing tips and how to deliver a top-notch public relation campaign that attracts repeat business. You will also discover that the basic mechanics of running a business are not ignored; with sections devoted to purchasing, buying appropriate equipment, staffing, finding user-friendly software, monitoring inventory, managing cash flow and creating ambience in the public areas of the shop. The CD-ROM contains much of the same information found in the book, but does included printable business forms for home and office use, a supply list, as well as a more detailed business plan to use as your own template. Overall this book is very user-friendly, offers quality advice and presents up-to-date information. An important resource you will be able to refer to for many years
Great Book for Potential Shop Owners!.......2004-12-04
Excellent book for anyone wanting to start a specialty or gourmet shop. Extremely helpful and well thought out information CD is great addition!"
Book Description
The Little Locksmith, Katharine Butler Hathaway's luminous memoir of disability, faith, and transformation, is a critically acclaimed but largely forgotten literary classic brought back into print for the first time in thirty years. The Little Locksmith begins in 1895 when a specialist straps five-year-old Katharine, then suffering from spinal tuberculosis, to a board with halters and pulleys in a failed attempt to prevent her being a "hunchback." Her mother says that she should be thankful that her parents are able to have her cared for by a famous surgeon; otherwise, she would grow up to be like the "little locksmith," who does jobs at their home; he has a "strange, awful peak in his back." Forced to endure "a horizontal life of night and day," Katharine remains immobile until age fifteen, only to find that she, too, has a hunched back and is "no larger than a ten-year-old child." The Little Locksmith charts Katharine's struggle to transcend physical limitations and embrace her life, her body and herself in the face of debilitating bouts of frustration and shame. Her spirit and courage prevail, and she succeeds in expanding her world far beyond the boundaries prescribed by her family and society: she attends Radcliffe College, forms deep friendships, begins to write, and in 1921, purchases a house of her own in Castine, Maine. There she creates her home, room by room, fashioning it as a space for guests, lovers, and artists. The Little Locksmith stands as a testimony to Katharine's aspirations and desires-for independence, for love, and for the pursuit of her art.
"We tend to forget nowadays that there is more than one variety of hero (and heroine). Katharine Butler Hathaway, who died last Christmas Eve, was the kind of heroine whose deeds are rarely chronicled. They were not spectacular and no medal would have been appropriate for her. All she did was to take a life which fate had cast in the mold of a frightful tragedy and redesign it into a quiet, modest work of art. The life was her own.
"When Katharine Butler was five, she fell victim to spinal tuberculosis. For ten years she was strapped to a board (that means one hundred and twenty months, an infinity of days and hours and minutes)

A gem.......2006-01-08
This book is enchanting, wonderful, and beyond description, except to say it is a testament to the human spirit.
If you read this and loved it, also look at "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," by Jean-Dominique Bauby. If you can't imagine living on your back for ten years, try imagining writing a book using only the ability to blink one eye, to dictate letter by letter. Tis book is another testament to the human spirit.
amazing.......2002-09-09
This book is amazing, I am 15 and I read it, my mother at 39 read it, my grandma read it and my younger sister at 13 read it. Everyone takes away some different, but something wonderful from this book. It is absolutely indescribable, you have to read it; right now, order it, read it, it will change your outlook on life.
Don't Miss This Treasure.......2001-12-18
This is a beautiful book on so many levels. The author's voice, the author's spirit, the author's technique of storytelling are awe inspiring. If you have been led to this page, take it as a sign and order this book, reading it is an experience and I can't wait to read it again. If you are looking for a gift to give someone else then this is it, but read it first yourself so that you can trully share it.
The Little Locksmith.......2000-09-14
My husband gave this book to me and I am truly enjoying it! Katharine sees things from a rare perspective. Her life transformed her into someone that could see deep into even the most mundane subjects. I feel a new appreciation for even the sounds of crickets! She was certainly a person who's cup was always half full! This book is like welcome raindrops, enveloping you and staying with you long after the drops have evaporated!
Just beautiful.......2000-07-26
This book is astounding-- I keep wondering why no one ever told me about it before. Why did I find it on the dusty independent table in the back of bookstore? It is rare and beautiful. Butler-Hathaway's insight, uniquely sensual perspective, enthusiasm, and empathy are lovely. Order it.
Book Description
The "ethnic cleansing" that has gripped the Balkans for much of this decade is but another chapter in the long history of man's inhumanity to man. Hopeful but unflinching in the face of such realities, Howard Ball's book focuses on international efforts to punish perpetrators of genocide and other war crimes. Combining history, politics, and critical analysis, he revisits the killing fields of Cambodia, documents the three-month Hutu "machete genocide" of about 800,000 Tutsi villagers in Rwanda, and casts recent headlines from Kosovo in the light of these other conflicts. Beginning with the 1899 Geneva Accords and the Armenian genocide of World War I, Ball traces efforts to create an institution to judge, punish, and ultimately deter such atrocities-particularly since World War II, since which there have been fourteen cases of genocide. He shows how international military tribunals in Nuremberg and Tokyo set important precedents for international criminal justice, tells what the international community learned from its failure to stop Pol Pot in Cambodia, and describes the ad hoc tribunals convened to address genocide in the Balkans and Rwanda. He then focuses on the establishment of the International Criminal Court with the Treaty of Rome in 1998 and assesses its probable future. The book also analyzes the reluctance of the United States to sanction the ICC, tracing longstanding U.S. reluctance to grant criminal justice jurisdiction to an international prosecutor. Ball examines questions of national sovereignty versus international law and reminds us that although most Americans consider such horrors to be problems of other countries, these are in fact countries in which many of our own citizens have their roots. With its unique focus on the ICC, Prosecuting War Crimes and Genocide is a work of both synthesis and advocacy that combines history and current events to make us more aware of the racist fervor with which these brutalities are carried out, more alert to the euphemisms in which they are cloaked. It forces us to ask not only whether the killing will stop, but whether humanity can prevent future genocides.
Customer Reviews:
Where will human rights be in the 21st century?.......2000-06-13
This book provides an excellent, detailed account of the war crimes and genocide which happened in the 20th century. Ball details human rights abuses which occurred during WWI, WWII, the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda and Cambodia. In providing an in-depth look into our past, Ball shows where international law may be moving in the future. The international community continues to see gross human right violations since the Nuremberg Trial. Ball provides Problems and Prospects for the future of the international community to protect victims against human rights violations and to punish those who commit human rights voilations.
Book Description
In the autumn of 1878 a band of Cheyenne Indians set out from Indian Territory, where they had been sent by the U.S. government, to return to their homeland in Yellowstone country. Mari Sandoz tells the saga of their heartbreaking fifteen-hundred-mile flight. Alan Boye provides an introduction to this Bison Books edition.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing and disorganized.......2007-05-20
I was really disappointed by this book. I had read "Crazy Horse" by Sandoz and was impressed. But not here. If there was ever a book that needed editing, detailed maps, a good timeline, a list of characters explaining their relationships, dates in the texts, and footnotes, this was it. This book had one map that was as close to useless as possible and a brief (one page) timeline that was hard to follow. I read a 1992 University of Nebraska publication. The writing style is convoluted. Plus there are so many characters here involved in some many different incidents that it was painfully confusing to try to figure out what was happening, what had happened to each character, when it happened, where they had been, and what their relationships were. I can't figure out why I labored to finish it. Reading this was like slogging through quicksand. I am sure that the tragedy of what happened to the Cheyenne is a great story, deeply moving and revealing. I just can't believe this is a good telling of it. My recommendation is to find a more enjoyable and informative book on this topic.
Cheyenne Autumn Review.......2002-10-18
Cheyenne Autumn is a very educational book. I learned many new things about the Cheyenne and their way of life. It was so very disturbing for me to have to learn the actual hell these people were put through. I would have enjoyed this story much more if the author had not have introduced the characters in the novel before the story actually started. When the time came for a character to be introduced, I had already forgotten who they were. The only other major problem I found was that I was very confused with the transitions of paragraphs. This novel jumped between paragraphs quit frequently. I am the type of reader who prefers to know exactly what is going on and with who. When so many things are going on that I cannot comprehend them all and understand them completely, I get frustrated. This story takes a lot of time to read because you have to always be paying attention to every small detail. In order to read this book all of the way through, you have to want to read it and you have got to be patient. This is not the type of book someone should read because they have to. Read this book because you want to be educated on the Cheyenne and their way of life. If this is your desire in reading this book, then you will enjoy it very much.

Cheyenne Autumn.......2002-07-21
Documents the flight of the Cheyenne from the Indian Territory in Oklahoma back to their home in the north. The Cheyenne were promised that they could leave and then chased like escaped prisoners when they did leave. Time after time they survived seemingly insurmountable odds, but not without loss. I believe that the Cheyenne who lived this story -- Little Wolf and others -- would be happy to know that they were remembered with this book.
Heartbreaking, yet uplifting........2001-02-05
Mari Sandoz, one of the greatest American writers, amazed me once again in Cheyenne Autumn. A heartbreaking story of injustice and cruelty, Sandoz brings out the heart of the people through vivid imagery and insights that will make you feel you are on the trail with the Cheyenne.
Sandoz sees through the heart, and in this remarkable book takes the reader back in time. The book does not simply recount a tragic story, but rather reveals a people's life and their struggle to regain it. I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned with the human condition.

Book Description
This is a revised and updated edition of Ronald Fernandez's acclaimed study of the Puerto Rico-United States relationship. Tracing that relationship from the early years of the 20th century through to the present, Fernandez provides a comprehensive analysis of political, economic, and military affairs as they relate to Puerto Rico. The new edition is completely up-to-date through 1995 and includes important new material based upon documents found in the Reagan presidential library, as well as newly declassified documents in the Eisenhower library.
Customer Reviews:
A definite wake up call.......2003-03-28
All throughout my school years up until high school, I was bombarded by statements such as, "Puerto Ricans are lazy. They are always on welfare here on the mainland and on foodstamps on the island. That is why the U.S. should not allow Puerto Rico to become a state. They're too dependent."
Little did I know about "neo-colonialism", nor the economic 'development' in Puerto Rico under the direction of the U.S. government. After reading this book, I felt enlightened and, naturally, rather enraged with history. I have read books on all aspects of my culture, while keeping an eye on the economic and political aspects.
Though more and more Puerto Ricans on the island are in favor of statehood, I feel it is important for them to know the history of the island under all the colonial powers (whether Spain or the U.S.).
I thank Ronald Fernandez for all the factual information that he gave. He has opened up my eyes.
Que viva Puerto Rico!
A wake-up call to Americans and Puerto Ricans alike.......1999-02-23
This book summarizes the systematic comedy of errors that has been the United State's dominance over Puerto Rico; perhaps the least publicised of America's abuses towards some of its own (if you care to consider Puerto Ricans as Americans, many of which don't themselves). A must read for any Washington politician who dares to deal with the potentially fractitious (and sometimes fraticidal) subject of Puerto Rico's ultimate status solution.
The profuse details on how the United States' government brought the local Puerto Rican economy to its knees soon after the Spanish American War, how it dealt with the islanders as an afterthought (and still does) and how a small elite of local politicians have turned the discussion on U.S.-Puerto Rico relations into a quagmire, would be dismissed as heavily biased towards the left, if it wasn't so heavily researched. Fernandez has done an excellent job of documenting the true story of U.S.-Puerto Rico relations.

Book Description
This volume presents a detailed study of the climate strategies of ExxonMobil, Shell, and Statoil. With an innovative analytical approach, the authors explain variations at three decision-making levels: within the companies themselves, in the national home-bases of the companies, and at the international level. The analysis generates policy-relevant knowledge about whether and how corporate resistance to a viable climate policy can be overcome.
