    Book Description

The leaders of anticolonial wars of resistance--Metacom, Pontiac, Tecumseh, and Cuauhtemoc--spread fear across the frontiers of North America. Yet once defeated, these men became iconic martyrs for postcolonial national identity in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. By the early 1800s a craze arose for Indian tragedy on the U.S. stage, such as John Augustus Stone's Metamora, and for Indian biographies as national historiography, such as the writings of Benjamin Drake, Francis Parkman, and William Apess.

With chapters on seven major resistance struggles, including the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the Natchez Massacre of 1729, The Indian Chief as Tragic Hero offers an analysis of not only the tragedies and epics written about these leaders, but also their own speeches and strategies, as recorded in archival sources and narratives by adversaries including Hernán Cortés, Antoine-Simon Le Page du Pratz, Joseph Doddridge, Robert Rogers, and William Henry Harrison.

Sayre concludes that these tragedies and epics about Native resistance laid the foundation for revolutionary culture and historiography in the three modern nations of North America, and that, at odds with the trope of the complaisant "vanishing Indian," these leaders presented colonizers with a cathartic reproof of past injustices.

3 out of 5 stars Before The Fall.......2006-10-25

For a few years, coach Jim O'Brien had the Ohio State men's basketball program nearly on the same level of fan interest as the football team.

Taking over from the inept coaching and out-of-control operation of Randy Ayers, O'Brien and his staff brought the basketball team to heights not seen since the early 1960s. Author Ralph Paulk chronicles the life of O'Brien as a hoops ace as a youth through his initial years at Ohio State.

It is somewhat a strange biography, though. O'Brien was known for keeping his personal life separate from his public role as a head coach. The book reads at times like Paulk had a difficult or impossible time during the interviews to draw O'Brien out.

The section on Ayers is especially interesting, since the depths the program fell under his watch was never fully chronicled for fans. But please understand the book was published before O'Brien was fired due to the illegal payments to players and the court decision that ruled the firing violated his university contract.

O'Brien could have been a coaching legend with the Buckeyes. Paulk should have been writing about a coach on the fast-track to glory, not one who had already reached the summit in Columbus.

5 out of 5 stars Jim O'Brien: Bucking the Odds.......2003-07-18

Excellent reading. I was amazed how the author was able to capture the heart of mind of this magnificent coach. It is amazing how Coach O'Brien was able to turn the Bucks around. OSU is quite fortunate to have Coach O'Brien in their program. Kudos to Mr. Paulk. Ann Fields

4 out of 5 stars The urban legends you already know and many more new ones.......2004-09-19

It is ironic that Jan Harold Brunvand put together his "Encyclopedia of Urban Legends" because it was the ultimate reference work on the subject consulted in the 1998 film "Urban Legend," although there was no such book. So this is the real-life counterpart to the fictional Hollywood volume and if you do not recognize dozens of the examples that are arranged alphabetically from A ("The Accidental Cannibals") to Z ("The Zoo Section"), then you simply have not been swapping tale but supposedly true tales with your best buds.

If you remember the point in your cognitive development where you discovered that a true tale and a tale that is not true sound pretty much the same, then you can understand the power of your standard urban legend. The one that goes farthest back in my own mental file cabinet would be "The Kentucky Fried Rat," which was told with regards to a particular fast food restaurant in Albuquerque when I was in high school. Of course, some of these go way back, such as "The Bullet Baby," the one set in the Civil War where a bullet goes through the scrotum of a Union soldier and lodges in the reproductive tract of a young woman who gives birth to a healthy baby nine months later. That hoax was first published in an 1874 medical journal. You can see the basic principle involved, in terms of taking things that "could" be true, even if it requires a hefty grain of salt, and spinning a tale. I can imagine somebody trying to come up with alternative methods of accomplishing a virgin birth and throwing out this whopper.

Brunvand, a professor emeritus at the University of Utah, has written several books on the subject of urban legends, such as "Too Good to Be True," "The Vanishing Hitchhiker," and "Curses! Broiled Again!" In this collection he is interested in looking at these urban legends as examples of modern folk narrative. There are hundreds of individual urban legends included here, along with their variations, and most entries are cross-referenced and include bibliographical citations. Whenever possible he traces the evolution of particular legends and their connections to other fields including film, literature, comic books, music, etc. He also points out how the Internet has speeded up the dissemination of urban legends to an extent never before imagined.

There are even some entries that explain how to collect, classify, and analyze texts and performances for those who want to research the subject further. Throughout the book what Brunvand calls "legend themes" are explored and he often touches on the scholarly approaches to the genre. But for most readers the fun is going to be finding out where some of the stories they have heard about or even believed in the past really came from. In my defense I want to point out that I really did not care if the story about the "Neiman Marcus Cookies" was true; I really liked the recipe because these are super rich cookies and you can only eat one at a time, which, for me, would be a good thing.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful & Informative.......2004-03-07

I decided to pick up this book because I have always had a mild interest in urban legends. This book is well organized from A-Z. It contains several hundred urban legends within the pages. I was quite surprised about how several different urban legends blend together.

The author dictates when the legend started and where it began. If you have any interest in urban legends then I would recommend this book. I was suprised at how many urban legends are documented and told.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2002-12-13

If you're interested in urban legends from a folklore standpoint, a research standpoint, or just a fan then you will appreciate this book. It is the most complete reference I have seen. Details of stories, their comparison with other stories, common stories from other parts of the world, and clear explanations. Brunvand has a knack for making it all understandable and avoids being dry and lecturing. For the stories themselves you would want to see his many other collections; for research and reference you can not do without this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars A winning legand's book.......2001-07-18

If you are thinking for a urban legends book, this is the one you want. Has all the legands you can think of in it. From famuos ones to ones you have never heard of.

                        Book Description

Play supergames for the super-smart. These mind-blowing, brain-bending puzzles use a deviously tricky mix of geometry and combinatronics (the different ways objects can be arranged), and emphasize structure, pattern, and color. Everything’s visual and as enticing to the eye as to the wits. Try to solve the Impossible Domino Bridge Problem: at first glance, the top-heavy structure looks as if it would just tumble. But give it some thought and you’ll realize that not only can it be built but that you can build it yourself. Take the Ingenious Tangram Challenge; put together a Stars Puzzle; and Draw, Halve, and Quarter all the rooms in a house into equal-size spaces. There’s illuminating background information on the puzzles’ origins, too.

                          5 out of 5 stars The Best Practical Business/Management Book I've Read.......2005-07-22

As a manager, entrepreneur and CEO, I've read most of the management, sales, and business books. While they all (or at least most of them) have some useful and practical information, "By the Seat of Your Pants" is the first book that gave me information I was able to put into practice the next day! This book is a very easy read, crammed with lots great examples from Tom Gegax's business and personal life. His self-deprecating humor, and easy 1st person writing style make the book that much more enjoyable. But don't let the easiness of the writing style fool you - this book gives solid, business based, tried and true advice. I literally read the entire book in one weekend, and then started to re-read it the next day with a highlighter and notepad.

I also have "put my money where my mouth (review) is... I have purchased copies of the book to give to the managers that work for me and for the business development consultant to my non-profit organization.

This book should be a "Must Read" for all new business owners or managers and will form a cornerstone to their library. More experienced managers will also gain wonderful insights and problem solving examples. Everyone who reads this book will be re-vitalized and take away several tips, tricks and techniques that will positively impact their business and/or personal life.

5 out of 5 stars At last a business book that really helps improve profits!.......2005-07-20

This book is an excellent read and incredibly useful. We are business consultants and we refer our customers to it constantly, mention it in our seminars and recommend it to anyone who will listen. This book has down to earth common sense info that helps anyone in any size business. Interesting and easy to read and yet straight to the point.

This is the best business book I have read in a LONG TIME!!

5 out of 5 stars Best, most comprehensive management guide I've read.......2005-05-01

I received an advance copy of this book, and although I have read hundreds of books on business management techniques and theories, I found this to be the most comprehensive and realistic guide to the proper management mindset. The concepts regarding balancing process execution and building perfect teams are dead-on, and I love the ability I have to turn to particular sections as needed for management situations. I am a director at a large international corporation, and this book will remain on my desk for years to come.

you might want to read this book for his concept of psychosocial development of stages. but if you want to know about Gandhi, go find a different book.

                            3 out of 5 stars Gandhi's Truth . . . plus 300 pages of other stuff.......2000-08-21

Gandhi's Truth is a psychoanalysis on Gandhi performed by the famed psychologist Erik Erikson. Although the psychoanalysis is done after Gandhi's death by a man who's never met him, I still think it could've been done effectively.

Unfortunately, Mr. Erikson spends half of the book going over himself. Why he wants to analyze Gandhi, how Gandhi is really very similar to Freud, and various ruminations on the inherent problems of getting to know the "other." Another quarter of the book is simply wasted on senseless words. Mr. Erikson seems to have real trouble using one word when thirty will do. The portion of the book that actually talks about Gandhi is solid and enjoyable. Too bad it makes up such a small portion of the book.

I have not read other books about Gandhi. Specifically, I haven't read his autobiography. Maybe it's just really dificult to get solid information on this incredibly famous man. Maybe Erikson included the sum of what was known about Gandhi in his work. Somehow, I doubt it.

I find Gandhi to be fascinating and I'm very interested in learning more about this impressive man. Unfortunately, I picked the wrong book to start with.

5 out of 5 stars This text reviews the historical presence of Gandhi in India.......2000-06-24

I found this book very interesting, as well as culturally diverse. It gave me a whole new perspective into a world much different from my own. I learned that Mahatma Gandhi has profoundly influenced leaders that have been involved in nonvoilent liberation movements, such as Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.. I now have a deep admiration for this abstruse, insightful man because Gandhi beleived that truth is always essential in the political arena. "Gandhi's Truth" is an introduction to the challenges of poverty, religious difference, and ethnic tensions we all must accept and try to deal with as we head into the everchanging 21st century. I strongly recommend this book to anyone involved in or wishing to study politics. Happy Reading!

                                              Book Description

In this volume, Hui takes a critical look at the training methods of various striking, kicking, and grappling martial arts. Each of several arts discussed herein are presented side-by-side in a discussion, description, illustration, and analytical format. Included are chapters on the scientific study and analysis of judo, ju-jutsu, boxing, kickboxing, and kung-fu, with diagrams illustrating the proper body mechanics and correct angle of entry of each technique within the respective arts.

4 out of 5 stars Very cut-and-dry book on fighting physics.......2003-11-24

This book is a very good one for understanding the most effective ways to move the body in a fight. The author starts off going into leverage in what he titles "A Primer", and then goes into the physics and biomechanics of throwing powerful strikes, including putting the maximum amount of weight into a punch. The second chapter is "Guiding Principles for Kickboxing", and goes into powerful, nontelegraphic blows while keeping a good defensive possition. The third chapter goes a little into jointlocks, and specifically the "wakigatame" style arm bar. The next chapter, on "combat wrestling", goes into a few basic, but effective, takedowns, used primarilly as examples to illustrate the authors principles. I think the chapter on unarmed vs. knives is worth looking at, but wouldn't be my #1 source of information on the subject. The last real chapter is unique in that it's about sentry removal in a non-lethal manner for the military. The book ends with a scientific breakdown of Holyfield/Tyson. It's a very good book, especially for the power-hitting and leverage chapters.

This book is one of the most in depth books on self defense that I have ever read. Although it is sometimes hard to visualize what they book it trying to tell you, there are multiple pictures that will help. And being classified as a lethal weapon myself, I realize that this book brings in all the "fun" aspects of my training over the years. Buy this book. It will help

Lots of research obviously went into this book, with a very difficult balance to maintain. The difficulty lies in getting these people to trust you enough to interview with you without you personally professing their beliefs. Pictures must have been hard to come by. A must read to learn the inner workings of their minds, and the beliefs which control their actions.

We need to be aware no matter how distasteful.

This is probably the ONLY book you will find that gives a fair, balanced account of those in the Christian Identity Movement. If you would like a true account of their beliefs, I would have to point to this book. Not all people that adhere to Christian Identity are crazy terrorists. Most of them aren't. Most Muslims are not Terrorists either. However, in our "tolerant society" we seem to be good at lumping all the bad together without knowing anything about certain people.

3 out of 5 stars Much truth to S.O.G........2005-01-17

This book is fairly presented & unbiased. The authors prove that much like societies as a whole, there are good & wicked people. The mainstream media will never present these people fairly. I know some of these folks personally & they are God fearing, law abiding people. The ones I know truly love their families & are concerned about government chicanery & deceit. Read the book. Don't waste time with media imposters & hype built on an intricate system of lies to create profit.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Post-Christian Society's Malcontents.......2002-02-20

The authors of the book take a neutral stance on these white supremacists. They present their ideas without actually condoning them. They have a reserved sympathy for these people since the authors live in the rural conservative culture of Texas that breeds this sort of extremism. They also mention that they had repugnance towards some of the ideas presented, but avoided editorial comments as part of their deal with the extremists.

Many racial extremists have the religious theology of an antisemitic variety of Christian Identity. They interpret the scriptures to mean that whites are actually the chosen people and the Jews are the seed of Satan. They believe that the stone of destiny that the monarchs in England swear themselves upon when being enthroned is Jacob's pillar in the Bible because English tradition says so. Not all Identity Christians are anti-semitic though.

The extremists are firm believers in conspiracy theories involving the Jews and their Gentile freemason cohorts. They believe everything is controlled by ZOG (Zionist Occupied Government) and that the Jews and freemasons involved shape society to their own benefit and to the detriment of the white population.

The authors do not sanitize their accounts of what the extremists truly believe. They believe in the elimination of homosexuals, Jews, race mixers, and the unproductive. Some of their beliefs on these matters are influenced by their interpretation of the Scriptures. (The more violent, younger and secular Neo-Nazi gangs believe in elimination of the unproductive.) The religious racists see themselves as soldiers of God in a righteous fight against what they see as evil. These religious beliefs make them very committed and sometimes they will attempt violence or lawbreaking to achieve their goals of having a Christian theocracy. They believe they are at war with a corrupt government that needs to be overthrown. However, they think that Timothy McVeigh was actually a government agent that worked to put the blame on racial extremists for OKC bombing and to create an incident to pass an anti-terrorists bill targeted against patriots.

They have problems with the theory of racial equality since they think affirmative action is used to promote people who do not merit the position and that blacks often make formerly all-white neighborhoods crime zones.

The authors do not try to confirm or deny any of the many conspiracy theories that they believe in and I think that this is weakness to the book.

The racial extremists have a battle strategy of leaderless resistance in which they form a small group of no more than seven people who know each other well. This strategy guards against infiltrators because the group remains very quiet about what they plan to do. They plan to have hundreds of these groups who will reek havoc upon what they see as ZOG controlled society as they attempt to implement a revolution.

I view the group as ultra conservatives with unorthodox Christian beliefs that do not want to live in a multi-culti society with race mixing and little adherence to some of the more thorny traditional Christian beliefs. They are unable to get what they want at the voting booth and are willing to use violence to get what they want. They also see through the weaknesses in the theory of racial equality and racial sameness when they observe reality. They are scary, but at the same time, fascinating to read about. Although milder conservatives may have the same complaints as the extremists do, they do not have the same nuances in their beliefs that will lead them to violence. Nuances in belief systems are important.

More people will probably be radicalized enough to join extremist groups in the future if the economy keeps sputtering and more foreigners come to live here making the nation less of a predominately white culture. Resentment will be stirred if non-whites are still considered a protected class as opposed to whites according to the law.

This is an informative and readable book that covers extremists in depth while avoiding the simplicity and distortion that the media usually resorts to when covering extremists.

Fueled by exploding events at Waco, Ruby Ridge, the Freeman fiasco in Montana, and energized by the Okahoma City bombing, there are a number of groups right in your own back yard, especially if you live in Texas, Arkansas, Montana, Arizona or other conservative states, who are intent on waging a holy war against the government and the ever-darkening face of the United States. Howard and Myra put their lives on the line to gain this information, which they present in objective, clear prose based on the facts. Learn who the white supremacists are and what they have in store for America. [Great pictures, too.]

Mary Bradshaw Richards was one of the first women to enter the park on vacation. Many men visited the park for reasons from surveying to vacationing. This story tells the story of Yellowstone from the point of view of one of it's first tourists. An interesting read for women.
