The Inventory is not only a catalogue of magnificence but also a key text for evaluating the successes and failures of the Tudor monarchy. Henry VIII had extravagant ideas of image and authority and loved his possessions, amongst which where over 2,000 pieces of tapestry, 2,028 items of gold and silver plate and 41 gowns. Although he left the country with heavy debts and an empty exchequer, he was far from bankrupting the monarchy as some scholars have suggested. Indeed the Inventory allows us to calculate that at the time of his death the contents of his palaces and wardrobes were worth about £300,000 and the military and naval stores a further £300,000. Most of what the King owned has unfortunately since disappeared. Yet the Inventory tells us what once existed, enables us to identify surviving objects and also helps once belonged to hem. The transcription of the inventory is accompanied by a historical introduction, a glossary of technical terms, and an exhaustive Index which is a major tool of scholarship in its own right.

Most Valuable Player (1980, 1981 and 1986), Schmidt was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995, his first year of eligibility. This book is the first serious account of Schmidt's celebrated career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Concentrating on contemporary newspaper accounts, periodicals, biographies by Schmidt's teammates and baseball histories, this long-overdue work is the full story of one of the game's greatest sluggers, and one of its true heroes and role models.

Nothing Much New Here.......2001-08-05

The author does a nice job recounting Schmidt's career -- that is to say, his research was good. That being said, there's a temptation when someone writes about his boyhood hero (and the author expresses his admiration for Schmidt in the introduction) to put the subject on a pedestal no matter what, to apologize for perceived problems, or, worse, both. Unfortunately, the author falls victim to both temptations, and the book suffers because of it. The book will serve those who don't know much about Schmidt fairly well. For those who know more about him, you won't learn much that is new. The book also lacks meaningful analysis about Schmidt's career. In summary, I expected more on this subject and from this author, and I was disappointed.

Nothing Much New Here.......2001-08-04

The danger when someone writes about a childhood hero (which the author admits in his introduction) is that the author can idolize the subject without question, apologize for certain aspects of his baseball life, or worse, both. Kashatus' book is well-researched, but it falls prey to both temptations. The result is a somewhat saccharine effort whose goal is to lionize Schmidt without much critical analysis regarding Schmidt's approach to the game and the fans. If you don't know much about Schmidt, then the book might be helpful, but if you do, you'll be disappointed.

Awww, Schmitty.......2000-07-26

As far as the book itself goes, it is a very factual, general account of Michael Jack and his career. Mostly gleaned from old newpaper clippings and quotes, it reads more like a history book than anything. (although I was able to skim through it in just an hour at the library). Not being a fan of baseball whatsoever, this biography actually did nothing for me. So why the 4 stars?

I'll tell you why. I am from the Philadelphia area and am very familiar with our reputation as fans. I am a Flyers, Sixers, Eagles and Phillies fan, I will never sell out no matter how bad those clowns are and no matter where I live. Schmitty always whined and cried about the treatment he received there and there's one little passage in this book thats worth your time to read.

One snowy morning, Michael "2 Bad knees and a dream" Jack was chasing after his daughter when 2 kids saw him and excitedly started yelling his name. Turning to happily acknowledge the tykes, he was then proclaimed a, "choker." He cried. Now thats funny stuff.

There have been many players to grace the hot corner, Arky Vaughan, Pie Traynor, George Brett, Wade Boggs, George Kell, however none of them hold a candle to Michael Jack Schmidt and this book tells why.

From his days at Ohio State to his glory years in Philadelphia, Mike Schmidt is the standard by which all other third basemen are measured. He set a record for most home runs in a season by a third baseman.

He also holds the record for most home runs in a career, and on magical day in Chicago he belted 4 home runs on consecutive at bats. The reading of this book was truly a pleasure.

Ranking tied for second on the best of 1999 in my reviews, you'll be hard pressed to find another book like this. The true book for the serious Phillies fan and for those true baseball purists. I can't say enough great things about this book!

If you love creative non-fiction, you'll love this book. Even if you have no emotional attachment to skateboarding, even if you hate skateboarding. The photographs could do all the talking, but once you read the words of CR Stecyk, you'll be a skateboard enthusiast even if you've never seen a half-pipe.

Journalist Stecyk and photographer Friedman grew up in the creative 1970s California coast atmosphere in which their friends pioneer skateboarders, the Z-boys, reinvented their sport. They lived amongst them, they were them. They utelized their artistic talents to chronicle the birth of the Santa Monica surf-skate culture, and their exploits are compiled in this book, a tangible, more-comprehensive version of Peralta's documentary "Dogtown and Z-boys." See the film, get the book, you'll be hooked.

A hit at Christmas!.......2007-01-22

I'm not into skating but my 17 year old nephew Stephen is. He is hard to shop for and when I saw this book I knew it was for him. Let me tell you it was a HUGE hit on Christmas morning! The pictures are great and anything that gets kids interested in reading these days gets my vote.

If you were around when Dogtown was the thing, or are just interested in this era of skateboarding, don't miss out on this book! It's got tons of great photos, and of course, the original articles that were in "Skateboarder" magazine. This book is very well constructed; hard-bound glossy pages, all for less than half the price of an old Skateboarder issue on e-bay. Totally worth the money!

MORE THAN I EXPECTED - A cult classic!.......2005-07-25

This book is just as most of the reviews have said. Fantastic pictures and stories of the original DOGTOWN Z-BOYS in their heyday. I don't understand how the previous reviewer can say it was "not what she expected" ? THE STORIES AND PROFILES IN THIS BOOK ARE WHAT MADE THE Z-BOYS! It's all about the Z-Boys and the cult that surrounded them, and no one else, so she is mistaken when she says it's not about the Z-Boys, she just must not have taken the time to actually look at the book. It is the ultimate resource on the Z-Boys. There was never anything as important as these stories and pictures to "The Legend" that showed the world what these guys did, who they were, and where they came from. And C.R. Stecyks's words go far beyond what you would expect! Top notch story telling and social commentary. The Glen E. Friedman photos alone, in the second half of the book, are worth it's price. All the photography is so colorful, literally and figuratively. This is true 1970's Southern California Americana at it's best. A must for ANY Z-Boys, Skateboarding, or 70's Pop-cuture fan.

Not what I expected.......2005-07-22

When I bought this book I expected a biography-type book, like the story of the Z-Boys. That's not really what this is. It's just a collection of articles written about skateboarding during their time. It also has some interviews with Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, and Jay, but the book is mostly about skateboarding during this time, not really about the Z-boys.

It does have a really good amount of photos of them though. So, if you are a skateboarder, this would be a good book, but for a fan of the Z-Boys, this might just be a disapointment.

Nicely written, but not quote-worthy.......2006-03-09

It is clear that author Simon Ramo has much experience in attending meetings, and through that experience, he is able to impart some excellent advice. For example, he relates a story of how he, as a young professional, nearly blew it by aggressively speaking his mind in a meeting attended by older, more established team members.
On the negative side, the book containd little independent data, poll results, or quotes that might have lent authority to the author's own views. (I doubt that I will be quoting parts of this book to co-workers.) Also, the last two chapters, on government meetings and corporate ethics, seemed to drift badly off-topic. Still, overall, a good book.

"Strunk and White" for Meeting Attendees.......2005-11-23

Dr. Simon Ramo, a ninety-two-year-old legend in the aerospace industry (he's the "R" in TRW), has written what may be the definitive guide for those of us forced to attend business meetings. And one cannot imagine an author more qualified for this task, having attended an estimated 40,000 meetings himself. Employing a myriad of colorful, and at times humorous, anecdotes, Mr. Ramo promulgates meeting etiquette in a way that manages to be authoritative without becoming overly preachy. If only every business school graduate and corporate executive were compelled to read this book (and take it to heart), we'd all benefit from fewer, shorter and more productive workplace gatherings. The book's one notable omission is the teleconference, which in many companies now overshadows the face-to-face meeting in frequency and import. A worthy topic for a second edition, perhaps?

CYTHNIA D. HUNTER........Author eludicated and incorporated her characters and life situations so consummatively. That I embraced her experiences in a positive aspect of live and not negatively.

"DIARY OF A CRACK ADDICTS WIFE" will be most memorable and heartfelt to me for many reasons
was elated with how she tackled her daily obstacles by holding steadfast to faith. Finding her way through it all, left me bewildered. I'm glad she took her bad situations and redirected it in diverse ways.
She eloquently exhibited to us as readers that God never forsakes us.
So as I conclude...... Walk by Faith not by Sight......

"Must Read".......2005-12-16

"Diary of a Crack Addicts Wife" is an excellent story that everyone should take time out to read. I think that everybody in their own way can relate to the story. Either someone knows someone that is a user or has been affected by the drug in their past. And this is one of the best books that talks about that specific issue. You won't find to many other women to come out of the closet and say that their spouse is on drugs. There is a problem in society and that is keeping the drugs off of the streets. Ms. Hunter is one of the very few who is attempting to do that.

"Mind Blowing".......2005-12-16

First I want to start off by saying this was a great book. When I started reading the "Diary of a Crack Addicts wife" I found it was hard to even put it down for a second. I always enjoyed reading books about real life experiences. But this book just kept taking me by suprise. I personally havent dealt with any of the issues that were related to the book, but if there is anybody who is dealing or dealt with spouses who are or were drug addicts, or abusers I strongly recommend this book.

I don't mean no disrespect to the author. I think she had good intentions for writing this book. I just think that as a writer, she missed the mark.

After reading the reviews, I went out and bought the book,expecting a good read. What I got instead was a preachy self help book.

I think that this book is good for people who may have had problems with drugs or have with dealt with addicted spouses. But for those of us who are looking for a good read, this is not the book for you. It's not a page turner, it not a book you try to stay up late to finish reading. In fact, I didn't even finsh reading the book. The preachy messages after the diary entries were just too annoying and distracting. The messages should have been saved for the ending or epilogue.

For an exciting novel about drugs, I would recommend Crack Head by Lisa Lennox or Harlem Girl Lost. Both of these books were excellent.

Diary of a Crack Addicts Wife.......2005-04-19

This is an awesome book. Cynthia D. Hunter has blessed me with the gift of understanding. There have been stories told where woman will stay with their mate regardless the abuse he may give her. I always wondered why. I am one of the first to say that could never happen to me. After reading this book, I can now understand why a woman might feel she has to stay in that kind of relationship. Now all I can do is pray to GOD that I don't go through something like that.

In a diary form, Ms. Hunter tells us of her every day struggle living with a man whom is addicted to crackcocaine. She shares the horrifying stories of the day by day abuse that she receives from the man that she loves and is pregnant for. I respect Ms. Hunter for being brave and telling the world her story. I recommend this book to everyone. This may be just the thing to help you get out of that kind of relationship or to prevent you from getting in a relationship like that. Ms. Hunter I want to thank you, you have helped so many people.

The modern political idea of "jihad"--a violent struggle against corrupt or anti-Islamic regimes--is essentially the brainchild of one man who turned traditional Islamic precepts inside out and created radical political Islam. Using the evolution of Sayyid Qutb's life and writings, Musallam traces and analyzes Qutb's alienation and subsequent emergence as an independent Islamist within the context of his society and the problems that it faced. Radicalized following his stay in the United States in the late 1940s and during his imprisonment from 1954 to 1964, Qutb would pen controversial writings which would have a significant impact on young Islamists in Egypt for decades following his death and on global jihadist Islamists for the past quarter century. Since September 11, 2001, the West has dubbed Qutb "the philosopher of Islamic terror and godfather ideologue of al-Qaeda." This is the first book to examine his life and thought in the wake of the events that ignited the War on Terrorism. A secular man of letters in the 1930s and 1940s, Qutb's outlook and focus on Qur'anic studies underwent drastic changes during World War II. The Qur'an became a refuge for his personal needs and for answers to the ills of his society. As a result, he forsook literature permanently for the Islamic cause and way of life. His stay in the United States from 1948 to 1950 reinforced his deeply held belief that Islam is man's only salvation from the abyss of Godless materialism he believed to be manifest in both capitalism and communism. Adnan Musallam puts in a hardback capsule, the understanding of the life and trials of one Muslim Man's growth and struggle's with God in relationship to his fellow man's social structure.
