Book Description
Emerson Fittipaldi, in 1972 crowned the youngest-ever World Champion at the age of 25, won the title again two years later to prove that he was one of the most outstanding talents of his generation. He and his brother Wilson realized their dream of creating the first Brazilian Grand Prix car. After a brief retirement, the bold Brazilian forged a second magnificent career in IndyCar racing, in which he scored wins in ten consecutive seasons. In this latest addition to his well-received driver biography series, Karl Ludvigsen - Emerson's friend since the 1960s - tells the whole enthralling story.

Decidely Average.......2005-04-17
Karl Ludvigsen is a well known journalist and motorsport historian who has written a number of motorsport themed books, including Formula One, Indycar and marque histories. Heart of a Racer is part of a series on notable F1 drivers - other driver biographies in the series include Jackie Stewart, Bruce McLaren, Dan Gurney, and Alberto Ascari.
While being very well presented on glossy paper with a lot of black & white images, Heart of a Racer lacks substance. As the previous reviewer, M. L. Rosen, has noted, Ludvigsen regards Emerson as a personal friend. However, there don't appear to be any interviews with Emerson specifically for the book - published in 2002. All the quotations that Ludvigsen attribute to conversations with Fittipaldi appear to date back to interviews for articles published in the early to late 70's.
The coverage of Fittipaldi's racing career is broken down into sections - his Lotus years, the McLaren years, and the Fittipaldi years in formula one is largely glossed over in a few pages per section - there are more pages dedicated to photography in section than text. Some of the photos aren't fantastic in quality either. Apart from the opening chapter, which details the attempts at the Indy 500 over the years, there is only one other chapter which covers Emerson's Indycar career, which spanned 12 or so seasons. I was disappointed that there was not more material about Emmo's relationships with his teammates and competitors. The rivalry with Ronnie Peterson as a Lotus teammate is only slightly touched on here. And the story of Fittipaldi, the Formula One team, has really yet to be told - the chapter that relates to this period of Emerson's life is quite sketchy.
By and large, I was disappointed with Heart of a Racer - it really is not much more than a coffee table book - mostly pictures and little substance. Which is a real shame, as there are surely many interesting tales that Ludvigsen can relate about Emmo's time in motorsport. Look elsewhere for the definite story of Emerson's motorsport career - a good place to start might be Gordon Kirby's book, "Emerson Fittipaldi" written in 1990, which is often referred to by Ludvigsen in his own text.
Tells a good story, but is a disappointment.......2003-09-21
I've been a fan of Emerson's since the early 70's, and I was excited to see this book arrive, a recap of his entire racing (and personal) history. After reading it, however, I felt like it was missing something. Maybe a few somethings. First, the photography: the book is printed on heavy, glossy paper in a larger format, but almost all of the photos are black & white. There is a 16 page center section of color photos, but it doesn't seem like enough, considering that Fittipaldi raced most of his career long after color photography became commonplace. Most of the photos come from the "Ludvigsen Library", so that may be an explanation. I'm sure it was cheaper to use his own B+W images rather than buy rights to someone else's color stuff. As long as we're on the photos, the last 5 pages consist of shots of Emerson & Family playing paddle tennis, with Emmo clad in Speedo-type shorts and tight T-shirt. These images are the kind you show to your friends to embarass the subjects. Seemed out of place here. Also, despite the claim that Ludvigsen has been friends with Fittipaldi since the 60's, virtually all the quotes have been borrowed from other sources, albeit with credit. Do they ever talk? Finally, the book contained no compendium of his racing career. Where is the list of Grand Prix finishes? His CART racing stats? I guess I don't expect a list of every car and race since his childhood, but certainly his participation in the major series - F1, CART, IROC, etc - could have been listed. I don't know if I can recommend this book or not - I suppose it contains the basic info of his life and racing, but could have been a lot better. It's probably the best book out there about Emmo, but that's pretty faint praise.

One of the first decent RPGs for playing in Celtic Cultures.......1999-11-10
The standard of roleplaying products based in a Celtic background has been poor at best. The majority have been either sloppily written and/or have missed the point entirely, opting for half-baked New Age speculation. However, Ken and Jo Walton have come through with GURPS Celtic Myth. The setting mainly concerns its self with the British Isles, and floats in that wondeful Celtic Dreamtime belonging to Lugh, Fionn and Arthur. That said, the material remains true to its sources and can be used for historical gaming too. It is a refreshing change from previous attempts, which tended to hammer the Celtic round peg into a Game System square hole. A sign of this is the magic system, which harkens back to Druidic Tree Magic. The book itself shouldn't be taken as set in stone, rather, it is a springboard for those who always wanted to play Celts, but were daunted by the challange of codifying such an amorphous and oral culture. The sourcebook is easily converted to other systems, and should be in the Library of any serious gamer- particularly those interested in European Culture and History. Another product worth checking out is Fasa's Tir Na Og, for Shadowrun, for something of similar tone, but in a Cyberpunk setting.

Customer Reviews:
Having a bad day? Read this book!.......2007-04-05
First, a caveat: I know Joel Saltzman and have worked with him. Had dinner with his family. That said, I paid full price for this book because I know that, more than knowing his stuff, Joel lives it. Shake That Brain! is indeed the culmination of Joel's own life. Get a Post-It pad (mentioned in the book as one of those accidental ideas too silly to be successful--but guess what?) and jot down some of the material, then frame your computer with them. The exuberant tone is contagious, and the premise is unarguably correct: you're the captain of your own attitude, and your mind is a storeroom full of solutions and inspiration. As an admitted self-defeating (at times) nincompoop, I have used the book to fire my own ideas and it works, from questioning assumptions, borrowing good ideas and making them better, and never throwing out an idea that isn't working at the time (it can work later, as you let it germinate). It's a modern philosophy book as much as a business title, and it demands to be put into action. More than anything, the book is FUN, and not in the superficial way that sounds. Pick it up and enjoy it. It's better than therapy, drinking, or basketball (well, professional basketball anyway). And it's fuel for your own weary but indomitable enthusiasm. Highly recommended, and I have nothing to gain from this except a better way to look at things.
Nutritious and tasty food for thought! .......2006-10-24
When I was reading this, I couldnt help myself from comparing it with works of De Bono, and remotely with NLP. The feeling is particularly strong on Chapter 9 'Take an "Opposites" Approach' which provides suggestions as follows:-
How am I going to do all this work? => How are you going to do all this fun?
How do I get them to return my stuff? => How do they get me to return their stuff?
How do I teach this device lots of different handwriting styles? => How do I teach the users of this device one handwriting style?
How do I get telemarketers to stop annoying me? => How do I start annoying them? pg 72
Beside the above, there are many great ideas presented in quotes, points and live stories throughout the book. I like its style and structure very much, in particular the concise "Chapter take away" in the end of each chapter is great, say, in Ch12: Ask yourself "If I were a ______ what would I do? " and "What does this ______ want to be?" and in Ch16: Ask yourself, "What would ______ do?"
To conclude, all who wanna read to imrprove their creativity for solutions will be satisfied well. A helpful and fun read indeed! Highly recommended!
Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference:-
How important is attitude? It's the difference between This is hopeless and This I can do! One will get you nowhere; the other everywhere you want to go. pg 3

Fun, Provocative and worth the read.......2006-03-30
Always looking for something to jar my thinking to another place or level and this book did it. Its probably not for everyone but the way it is written and the advice are solid for making you challenge your own way of thinking. If you are one of those stuck in change and not wanting to do things differently this book is for you.
How to break through limitations and have more fun.......2006-03-06
Well known speaker, corporate motivator, and creative coach, Joel Saltzman, blasts through all barriers and blocks to success in this supremely accessible and FUN book. Prepare to be whisked away on a wave of L.A. energy as the author challenges your assumptions, injects hi-test creative fuel into your system, and reminds you that achieving your goal is not only doable, it's a BLAST! Inspiring quotes (the kind you stick on your mirror or monitor) are generously interspersed with observations from the author's experience along with helpful "chapter take-a-ways". After reading this book, I'm ready to conquer the world - or at least finish the book I've been working on!
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2006-03-02
I saw Joel Saltzman speak about 10 years and ago immediately became a fan. As soon as I saw this book, I bought it and haven't put it down since. This book will help you think outside the box and develop your own abilities in fun and productive ways. SHAKE THAT BRAIN is full of timeless wisdom but has a down to earth and engaging style. This is a laugh out loud book that is full of valuable insights and attitudes that can help you to reach your goals. If there is a better book on creative problem solving than this one, I don't know what it is. Everything in the book that I've tried works. I highly recommend this book. I'm sending it to all of my friends.
Book Description
“I like the surprise of the curtain going up, revealing what’s behind it.”
–John Schlesinger
The British director John Schlesinger was one of the cinema’s most dynamic and influential artists. Now, in Conversations with John Schlesinger, acclaimed writer Ian Buruma, Schlesinger’s nephew, reveals the director’s private world in a series of in-depth interviews conducted in the later years of the director’s life.
Here they discuss the impact of Schlesinger’s personal life on his art. As his films so readily demonstrate, Schlesinger is a wonderful storyteller, and he serves up fascinating and provocative recollections of growing up in a Jewish family during World War II, his sexual coming-of-age as a gay man in conformist 1950s England, his emergence as an artist in the “Swinging 60s,” and the roller-coaster ride of his career as one of the most prominent Hollywood directors of his time.
Schlesinger also discusses his artistic philosophy and approach to filmmaking, recounting stories from the sets of his masterpieces, including Midnight Cowboy; Sunday, Bloody Sunday; Marathon Man; and The Day of the Locust. He shares what it was like to direct such stars as Dustin Hoffman, John Voight, Sean Penn, Madonna, and Julie Christie (whom Schlesinger is credited with discovering) and offers his thoughts on the fickle nature of fame and success in Hollywood.
Packed with wit and keen insight into the artistic mind, Conversations with John Schlesinger is not just the candid story of a dynamic and eventful life but the true measure of an extraordinary person.

P-47 Thunderbolt in Action.......2003-04-21
This is the second of two "in Action" products on the P-47. Both are very good in each of their own right. This publication goes into more detail on the Thunderbolt, while the first issue is more to the using organizations. Photo work in both P-47 in Action books are exceptional. Color art work has got to be some of the best around. I have both editions in my reference library and continously use them for reference work. There should be a third edition written with all of the new P-47 information now available.
I feel the five stars is not enough to rate these books, it should be a 10.
Good coverage.......2001-07-12
The signal series of books are a good and cheap way to get info on a certain plane. This book is very photo filled. The inforamtion is compact and to the point. There is alot of information to take in. Aircraft numbers and mark numbers. I found this book better as a reference book than just sitting down and reading it from cover to cover. The drawings are excellent and the centrefold brilliant as always. This is a very good starting point for learning about the P-47.

I like this book on Billy & Blaze because I like cowboys and they headed for the ranch on the summer.
I like being a cowboy.
I like this book alot!
Great Book for Young Boys.......2000-06-26
The whole Billy and Blaze series is wonderful. This book is my son's favorite. The story is about how Billy takes Blaze on a ranch vacation. They see a wild horse they name Thunderbolt. None of the grown up cowboys can get near him. Blaze and Thunderbolt become fast friends. Eventually Thunderbolt follows them home, jumps in the corral with Blaze, and becomes friends with Billy. Billy is the only person Thunderbolt trusts and eventually lets Billy train him. Billy goes home from vacation with a beautiful new horse and Blaze has a best friend. My son was facinated by the friendship between the horses and how a boy could train such a big animal. The illustrations are beautiful and my son loves them.

Good Reading.......2001-06-28
Good plot story line rather tired has been used to often
A VERY GOOD FIRST IN THIS SERIES !.......2000-06-02
This military series is just what the doctor ordered. If you are tired of Mack Bolan and the others, try Cliff Garnett"s new series out for awhile. This first book is very well-written, ingeniously polted, fast-paced and credible; The TALON Forced is an elite special force with personnel from all branches of the armed services. They used the latest in cutting-edge technology and firepower. There stealth camoflauge is ...... ,well, let me just say this, get the book to find out, or just to comprehend this one. Talon Force never lets up until the last page. This is a good one.
Come back next time for my next review on my review page. MELTDOWN IS NUMBER #2 IN THE SERIES. You should look for it. You want be sorry!
High Tech Wiz Bang Action!--and a GREAT story too!.......2000-03-22
I really liked the first book. I really loved this one!(already ordered the 3rd & 4th books!)I am hooked! Even with all the high-tech weaponry, it is the characters that drive the story! The storylines are very believeable and have plenty of twists and action! Yet the characters are so engrossing I find myself really rooting for them. In the last two books it seems a little more of each character is revealed, a trend I hope continues with each book! This series is a wonderful balance of story, plot, action, good-guys(and gals!), bad-guys and gadgets! A FIVE STAR-TWO THUMBS UP WINNER! BRAVO! CLIFF BRAVO! KEEP IT COMING! CAN'T WAIT for the next book!
An Exciting Tale of Special Forces in Action in the Future.......2000-02-10
Better than Clancy! Thunderbolt is the first book in a new series about a new, high-tech commando force. The action is rapid fire and the description of military technology and combat is superb. I give this book five stars and recommend it to anyone interested in action and future military concepts. A fun read!
Also recommended: Digital War, Proud Legions, Sum of All Fears
Action from beginning to end. Timely terrorism topics........2000-02-08
A non-stop thriller. There is a rich cast of characters in Talon Force. Eagle team is made of heros we all would want for friends or more importantly defending our country. The story is so believable it seems ripped from today's paper. It is a real feel good book, pumping with action.

Could have been better.......2003-12-07
This is a fast paced story of WWII commandos using Alistair Maclean's characters from his two Navarone books. It is not as good as Maclean's books or even Llewellyn's own Storm Force from Navaone - the novel appears to have been rushed to publication without being fully developed or edited. However, it was enjoyable to read and difficult to put down.
Not a winning combination.......2003-03-07
Like the other reviewer, Robert Dinger, I have really enjoyed Sam Llewellyn. I am also a great fan of Alistair MacLean's earlier works. If you expect a winning combination in THUNDERBOLT FROM NAVARONE, though, you will be sorely disappointed. The story was not captivating, the characters were not interesting. The cliff-hangers were paraded past like a sad Indiana Jones wanna-be. This is no successor for Alistair MacLean. Again, Sam Llewellyn's yacht racing mysteries are very enjoyable, especially if you're a Dick Francis fan, and I am looking forward to the next one of those.
Thunderbolt from Navarone.......2002-04-20
I am a LLewellyn fan. I have to date loved all his sea storys and mysteries. I found them to be enthralling. This book bears no resemblence to his other work. It is a confusing mess. I gave it two Stars because I can't imagine myself giving him one Star. If you would like to get lost on an unromantic Greek Isle and endlessly fall off cliffs for no reason you might like it. I am mad I carried on in hopes of a great(or even)a good ending. I truly believed he would pull it out of the ooze but alass he didn't. Will the Real Sam please come back or meet me at the sea?
Book Description
The No-Nonsense Guide to Democracy takes the pulse of today's body politic and finds the patient in an enfeebled state. A sterile consensus of technocrats, neo-liberals and spin-doctors worldwide has usurped the hopes for a democratic future. Richard Swift explores how democracy is constricted and deformed by economic power-brokers and a self-serving political class from Birmingham to Bangalore. Including chapter-length discussions of topics such as eco-democracy, democratizing the economy and democracy in the southern hemisphere, the book is also a guide to the rich diversity of forms of elected government and contains practical ideas for empowering today's voters around the world.
About the No-Nonsense Series: Major issues facing the world today, complex as they are, are further obfuscatedoften deliberatelyby political and corporate jargon and media spin. This new Verso series of No-Nonsense Guides, published in conjunction with New Internationalist magazine, cuts through the confusion to present the facts and arguments concerning contemporary global issues as accessibly as possible.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent concise source on Reality.......2005-01-22
If you never understand for example why with a trillion dollar budget America can't solve a simple problem like education or health care when smaller nations with smaller budgets have, look no further. This book explains the differences between economic democracy, which is what America as a capitalist-fascist nation is, and a political democracy, which is what most Americans think they have. It summarizes the history of humanitarian democracy which as fallen to the wayside as economic democracy has armored up, stockpiled her weapons, and run rampant around the globe in the name of "freedom" and "democracy." This book is straightforward, concise, economical and approahcable. It gives a crash course on economic injustices and why they continue to happen (and will probably continue until corruption destroys civilization and we start all over AGAIN)

A must read!!.......2006-09-05
Robert Wolfe's Playing With Fish is a must read! This beautifully written collection of essays is seamlessly tied together through the sensitive, thoughtful, and entertaining voice of the author. Reminiscent of Edward Abbey's works, this book discusses the profound connections and relations between man and nature in an ever-industrializing world, and the significance of culture within it.
