The fun of this celebration of one of baseball's greatest hitters is not in the expected encomiums from a clubhouse of fellow ballplayers, the many nostalgic photographs, or even the bits of Williams collectibles it displays. It's in the tribute's surprises, and there are many: Shoeless Joe author W. P. Kinsella's fictional reportage of an imagined encounter between Williams and Jackson; senator John Glenn's recollection of flying fighter missions with Williams in Korea; basketball coach Bobby Knight's account of a plane ride with Williams for a fishing trip in Russia; and the tribute's valedictory, Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle's emotional panegyric to the 50th anniversary of the season Williams hit .406. Whether Teddy Ballgame is the greatest hitter who ever lived is certainly debatable; that he is unquestionably one of the most appreciated and studied is evident on every page of this splendid homage.

I recomend this book for anyone who is a baseball fan.Jim Prime I salute you!!You are the Best Writer ever and I now consider myself your biggest fan!!
I've read a lot of books on Ted and this one is tops!.......1998-04-04
I've read just about all the books on Ted and this one is right up there. I can't believe the interviews these authors got - from John Glenn on serving with Ted in Korea to the connection between Ted and Jack Kerouac. Some very touching stories, too, about "The Kid and The Kids." Ted made all kinds of time for kids with cancer. There isn't that much on Ted's controversial son or on his family life in general. It seems like the authors were respectful of his privacy. There must be a couple of hundred photos before, and many of them I'd never seen. I didn't think there was that much more to be said about Ted - boy, was I wrong. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
By its very nature, "cool" is a nebulous distinction. What is cool one year, or even one month, may not be the next. Yet some products are able to remain consistently cool year-in and year-out. In their quest for a share of the $171 billion of purchases that kids influence every year, marketers strive to develop such cool products. These the author terms "Ever-Cools."
The Barbie doll represents a perfect example of an "Ever-Cool" product. Barbie rides the trends and fads, assuming various guises to reflect current coolness. Mothers who had Malibu Barbie dolls now buy Baywatch Barbies for their daughters. This is an exploration of achieving the elusive Ever-Cool status.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2005-07-01
This might be the most useful business book and the best book on kids that I've ever read.
Most business books have just a couple of points, mostly covered in the first chapter, and then drone on to fill the pages with expansions, slight additions, and examples. They should have been articles instead of books.
This book, however, is absolutely brimming with valuable information about the psyche of kids, chapter after chapter. It starts with ever-present needs; moves into fads; gender specific issues; age based issues; etc etc.
It draws on the authors extensive hands on experience at Ogilvy working with kids marketing. And his apparent research on child development and psychology.
This is an excellent, concise but information-packed book on reaching kids for marketers, product developers and even parents!
Eeeeever-Cooooool.......2001-01-06
Are you looking for a secret formula to guide your kid focused marketing decisions? Gene Del Vecchio's book - "Creating Ever-Cool A Marketer's Guide to a Kid's Heart" is truly insightful. It is the closest thing to a secret formula that I've come across.
'Ever-Cool' is a book that answers a seemingly simple but actually quite complex question... Why do some brands in the kids marketplace remain the favorites of children year after year - generation after generation. Exactly what gives these brands their staying power? 'Ever-Cool' answers this question in a well written and entertaining style.
The book has 4 sections: 'The Introduction' , 'The Child's Psyche' , 'A Kid's World and Culture' and 'Marketing to a Child's heart'.
In 'The Child's Psyche' section Del Vecchio examines the timeless and underlying needs of childhood. From the differences between girls and boys, to their fears and fantasies.
'A Kid's World and Culture' investigates children in the world today. Their self awareness, shifting family structures, and universal (hopefully) experiences of childhood such as going to school, and living in the neighborhood. The 'Marketing to a Child's heart' section contains lots of advice and suggestions on how to utilize these insights.
I found the concept that there could be 'Kid Psyche Gaps' in the market place to be particularly intriguing. Del Vecchio explains it in the following way: Psyche Gaps are "that part of the child's psyche that is not currently being satisfied by a competitor" (pg. 221.) Clearly identifying what these gaps are and strategically developing a product to fill the gap is very sound marketing.
Another really cool part of this section is the 'Kids' Idea Matrix'. Del Vecchio provides a creative idea development aid that works in the following way: "By forcing our eyes to see relationships, we help our brains consider the ideas that are born from them. This can be accomplished with a system I call Matrixing a simple process of putting various categories of items in front of our eyes, side by side, in a fashion that will help us to easily mix and match them. The items we will force together are those that we have discussed throughout this book." (pg. 185) Del Vecchio essentially is showing us how to use his ideas.
Del Vecchio also briefly covers advertising, setting up a research program, and ethics. All in all I personally have no hesitation in recommending this book. I found it to be highly insightful and an enjoyable read.
Secret Weapon for Kid marketing!.......2000-07-22
Short version: Buy this book now, and get it shipped to you overnight!
This book is the secret weapon for anyone who markets to kids or wants to. Gene Del Vecchio manages to make the subject entertaining and engaging while teaching you a pile of indispensible techniques to capture a kid's heart.
Not only does the book teach you how to market products better, it gets you thinking different. Suddenly, you're developing products and strategies with kids in mind, and you understand why certain products are big hits with kids.
Another funny thing about this book...it helps you to understand kids better. For readers with their own kids, this could be the greates value of all.
Enlightening, entertaining and easy to read!.......1999-01-02
The author not only reveals important and interesting aspects of a child's psyche, but also gives you insights on how to use those aspects to make your products and brands "ever cool".
It's my kid marketing bible........1998-12-11
Buy it for the 25 pages on kid psyche. The rest is bonus (special bonus offer: 90% more free!). Damn insightful bonus. I constantly refer back to the kid psyche section. Every time I work on a creative strategy. Every time I look at a new toy. I can't tell you how valuable this book as been for me and my group. Five stars+++

Karl Wolff stood at the top of the infamous Nazi hierarchy. Involved in some of the most gruesome atrocities, Wolff was promoted to general then to SS and became police chief in Italy in 1943-1045.
Customer Reviews:
A "White Glove" Nazi.......2006-09-06
This is the story of a man born to privilege who rose through the ranks of the German armed forces and the SS, became the personal adjutant to Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler, and yet claimed never to have known about any of the atrocities committed by that regime. You will decide how credible his claim was, and whether his near escape from prosecution at Nuremburg was justified.
That he was not an architect of Nazi policies, is true; his was the role of assistant, and his focus was always upon living well while enhancing his status. He was, like many with SS titles, a General in rank but never in practice. He facilitated the surrender of the SS army in Italy, thus arguably saving any number of lives that would have been lost in further battles.
On the whole, this study reveals yet another illustration of how those with wealth and privilege can further enhance their position and prestige, even in perilous circumstances. Herr Wolf is not exactly an admirable figure, but his story is instructive.

Rather dull and not particularly ambitious work.......2007-05-27
While the book does cover an overlooked topic the history of the 28th Texas Cavalry (dismounted) wasn't a particularly interesting one. They fought 4 smallish battles over 2 1/2 years and because of poor leadership on a strategic level (not adequately addressed in book) spent most of their time marching around Louisiana and Arkansas.

A Solid Book on an Overlooked Topic.......2006-12-09
The obscure Trans-Mississippi Theater during the Civil War has long been overshadowed by the larger battles and more famous personalities east of the Mississippi River. Perhaps no portion of the Trans-Mississippi has been so overlooked as the Confederate units fighting to protect Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and the Indian Territory. At the time this book was published in 1998, not one unit history had been written on a Confederate force serving in this area for the majority of the war, writes author Jane Johansson. In Peculiar Honor, the author strives to give the Trans-Mississippi Theater and the Confederate units defending the region the attention they deserve through the story of the 28th Texas Cavalry (dismounted).
The 28th Texas Cavalry was raised by Colonel Horace Randal in the spring and summer of 1862 in several counties of East Texas. Like many Texas cavalry regiments, the 28th was dismounted on their way to the front. This was due to an overabundance of mounted units and a need for infantrymen. Ever proud and despite never mounting their horses again, the Texans chose to continue to call themselves cavalry, appending the word 'dismounted' to the end of their official title. These men were predominantly armed with smoothbore muskets, only managing to field a majority of rifles after several major battles of the Red River Campaign. Over the course of the war, the 28th Texas served as a part of Walker's Texas Division, the "Greyhounds", known for their quick marching ability. These men only fought in five major battles in the war (Milliken's Bend, Bayou Bourbeau, Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry), but they marched thousands of miles across Arkansas and Louisiana. These Texans did endure two mutinies late in the war, mostly due to rumors of their possible departure from the Trans-Mississippi Theater to protect Selma, Alabama. Not shying away from these less glowing traits, the author attributes the mutinies to these men being an "independent and perhaps loosely controlled group". The 28th Texas wasn't the most famous unit in the war or even the most effective, but they did the best they could with what they had.
As with any study on a Trans-Mississippi Confederate unit, the amount of information available is going to pale in comparison to units serving east of the Mississippi. Johansson took a logical approach to this unavoidable problem. She used the letters, diaries, and memoirs of the 28th Texas Cavalry where available and supplemented these sources with those of other units serving in Walker's Division. The letters of Dr. Edward W. Cade are heavily used. Dr. Cade served first as the regimental and then as the brigade surgeon. Captain Theophilus Perry of Company F wrote often to his wife Harriet, and the author uses these as another main source. Johansson was able to uncover letters from privates in the 28th who wrote home after major battles, helping to fill gaps in the record. When even these weren't sufficient, the reminiscences of men from other regiments in Walker's Division were substituted. The memoirs of Robert Gould, the commander of Gould's Battalion, seemed to be particularly helpful in this regard.
The men of the 28th Texas could look to their leadership and be sure they would be well handled. Colonel Horace Randal attended West Point in the 1850s, graduating second to last in his class in 1854. Johansson believes part of this low standing was due to Randal's "limited educational background" prior to attending the Academy and his average number of demerits. Randal served on the frontier with the 1st Dragoons after graduation, and he had some combat experience in several skirmishes with Native Americans. The first Lieutenant Colonel, Eli H. Baxter, also attended West Point. He was not interested in a military life, however, and resigned in 1853. Baxter attended the University of Virginia for several years, later obtained his law license, and moved to Texas. Baxter would rise to command the regiment rather quickly when Randal became the commander of the 28th Texas' brigade. Major Henry G. Hall was a Princeton graduate, and by the time the war started he was a wealthy slave holder. The author concludes that all three men "attended college, were professionals in their chosen fields, and were well qualified to provide leadership."
Jane Johansson's main goal is to expose the efforts of Walker's Texas Division through its three years of service in the Trans-Mississippi. The 28th Texas is used as a conduit through which to explore the contributions of Walker's Texas Division in a relatively traditional way, but the author also utilized collected genealogical data on the regiment to study the ways in which wealth, slave holding, and other social patterns affected the organization and service of the regiment. This regimental is then, in effect, a blending of traditional and "new" military history. In fact, the author covers the methods she used in detail in an interesting introduction to the book. The men of the 28th Texas enlisted in early 1862 after conscription became law in the Confederacy. Johansson compares these men to those who served in the 3rd Texas Cavalry, also raised in similar counties in East Texas but who enlisted in 1861. She finds that the men who answered the initial call to arms in the early days of the war were substantially different than the later enlistees. The 3rd Texas cavalryman was much younger and wealthier than his counterpart in the 28th, he owned more slaves, and he was usually unmarried. Typically, says the author, poorer men who needed to work their farms and married men who wanted to care for their families did not answer the first calls to arms. Conscription made their involvement in the war unavoidable, however. This look at the social fabric of regiments who differed by enlistment time but who were raised in the same local area was a fascinating and worthwhile effort. In addition to weighing the 28th against other units, Johansson compares the officers of the regiment to its enlisted men. In almost every case, the officers were "wealthier and more occupationally diverse", which the author logically concludes was a reflection of Southern society as a whole. The balance of the book is a traditional military narrative, and the author does a solid if not perfect job covering the movements and battles of the 28th Texas. Johansson mentions early in the book that she needed to fill in some gaps in the narrative of the 28th, and this sometimes shows through. In certain cases, the author candidly admits that there was no record of the activities of the 28th Texas for a given time frame. I found that this turned the book into more of a look at the division as a whole rather than a specific regimental. This has both positive and negative points. On the plus side, the author specifically states her desire to highlight the contributions of Walker's Division, and to her credit she does a solid job of this. However, those looking for a specific history of the regiment in a traditional sense may be left wanting more. To be fair, the amount of primary material available on a Confederate Trans-Mississippi regiment is usually thin, so some of this was undoubtedly unavoidable. The lack of a roster was a curious omission given the subject matter and the way the data was compiled and studied. Perhaps this was done due to space and cost concerns.
Peculiar Honor is an enjoyable and sometimes fascinating read. This is not just a traditional military history, but also sheds light on the social breakdown of the 28th Texas and some of its sister units. The author should be commended for attempting to inform readers about a neglected section of the Civil War in a new and interesting way, largely succeeding in the process. This book is particularly recommended to fans of the Trans-Mississippi Theater, those who enjoy regimentals, and those interested in some of the techniques involved in "new" military history.
Book Description
The current climate of American journalism is fraught with incestuous relations between government and a handful of Fortune 500 corporations that own and operate news organizations. From News Corporation's Fox News, General Electric's NBC, Viacom's CBS, Disney's ABC, and Time Warner's CNN to Clear Channel's massive radio empire, what the mainstream media present as "news" has become largely a "paid political announcement" born of favor trading, conflict of interest, and self-serving, bottom-line corporate logic. As a result of such accommodationism, American viewers receive a homogenized, censored version of reality and the watchdog of American democracy, the press, has become a docile instrument of governmental authority and big money.
In this timely collection of essays by more than a dozen of the nation's top media scholars, critics, and journalists, including a preface by Arthur Kent, the present media crisis is carefully exposed. From coverage of the war in Iraq to national security, this book details the manner in which journalists have walked in lockstep to the self-serving quid pro quo of government and corporate media giants. Among the many topics broached are methods of media manipulation and propagandizing; the claim that the media is liberal; media ownership, rules, and deregulation; alternative media; the threat to free access to information on the Internet; the effects of media consolidation on actors, producers, agents, managers, and lawyers in the film industry; and the standardization of music and reduction of localism in radio. The contributors include media critic Danny Schechter, political analyst Michael Parenti, Mother Jones publisher Jay Harris, the ACLU's Barry Steinhardt and Jay Stanley, former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt, and many other distinguished commentators. Not only does this book expose the current crisis, it proposes solutions to it, pinpointing legal and constitutional challenges, reviewing recent FCC rulings and congressional legislation, and proposing structural changes in the ways diverse media currently operate. For any American who prizes democracy, this book is a clear wake-up call to look more carefully behind the superficial slogans of a free America and the stars and stripes strategically displayed on the TV monitor.

Dangers in how the news delivery system is structured.......2005-05-13
Essays by more than a dozen of the country's top media scholars, critics and journalists discuss how the corporate ownership of the media holds dangers to the American democratic process itself, from issues of standardization in program content and party lines to the demise of local interests and the nationalization of the news media itself. Recommended as critical reading for any college-level student of journalism, News Incorporated: Corporate Media Ownership And Its Threat To Democracy considers the underlying dangers in how the current news delivery system is structured and regulated, and how it could be fixed.
A must for the democratically minded.......2005-03-18
Elliot Cohen's new book, News Incorporated, is an extremely valuable contribution to contemporary discussions about the failure of the American media to promote American interests. The book is scholarly, but accessible; it is provocative but suitably practical. If you want to understand what's happening in America today, you need to read this book.

If we believe that an informed populace is an integral part of a successfully active democracy, writes Robert W. McChesney, then the commercial basis of U.S. media, in which a substantial number of media outlets are owned by a handful of corporations, is definite cause for concern. When corporations control the flow of information, he suggests, they will inevitably do so in a way that promotes their own interests over those of the citizenry. From an analysis of the corporate influence over the 1934 Communications Act to a discussion of how media convergence might kill off hope of the Internet bringing about a revolution, he debunks the myth of an objective, liberal media and emphasizes the belief that issues of media ownership should be treated as matters of public policy rather than strictly business.

I wish I could rate higher than 5!.......2006-07-05
Why is there such a narrow range of debate today? Why was the Telecommunications bill of 1996 which will mold the shape of the internet for generations to come not even discussed? What happened in 1934 that changed the formats of radio, tv, cable, the internet, etc. These are good questions, and cogent to the point questions for today's world. Rush out and buy this little book; it'll have you thinking for days. If you're a better braver man than me, possibly acting. I know one thing I will not listen to news or read it uncritically!
best intro to media reform.......2004-02-10
This is the best short introduction to the need for media reform in the United States that I have seen. For someone completely new to the topic, it will be shocking, surprising, and perhaps in places a little too brisk, but all-in-all the best place to start. For someone who has looked at the topic before, it will provide additional insights and a remarkable summary of the major issues.
good, but theres more...........2000-11-08
this book is brief and covers some of the basics of the corporate controlled media issue. for more in-depth coverage of controlled media as related to its social implications, read the authors "rich media, poor democracy." For those with short attention spans, this book will suffice.
A great book, if you can handle the truth........2000-08-08
While most media criticism looks at the personal politics of reporters and editors or other such nonsense, McChesney's terrific little book examines the news industry as an industry. Out of this analysis comes eye-opening revelations about why we get such a narrow perspective in the mainstream news, and why there is so little news reporting available that could serve to upset the corporate status quo.
McChesney is not a conspiracy theorist. This book is loaded with solid data and analysis that shows how our news providers are owned and organized and allowed to operate. And it is written in plain, clear language that anyone can understand.
The book might be hard to accept for people who think they already have it all figured out, but for everyone else it goes a long way toward explaining how our news and politics can remain so static when virtually everyone is unhappy with what they are getting from both.
Get it, read it, and lend it out to everyone you know.
Cynicism. No thanks!.......1999-02-04
I read this book for a class in Communication Theory and Criticism. The book was so cynical of what media is really about, it made me question at time why I should even become a journalist, if corporate America has such a hold over all forms of media.

Customer Reviews:
Overall a great book.......2003-11-19
In this book, Mazzocco focusses on the history of ABC (given the nickname by Mazzocco "Always Be Conservative") from it's inception in the early 50's to what was present day (1994).
While wholly informative, this book is somewhat out of date, as it doesn't show how the media today could be considered worse. Also consider "Rich Media Poor Democracy."
