Book Description
The celebrated controversies of 1296-1303 between Philip the Fair of France and Pope Boniface VIII produced a huge amount of polemical literature. In addition to several major treatises, all of which have been published in modern editions, there exists an important literature of pamphlets and diplomatic correspondence. This minor literature remains largely untranslated and unedited, or is available only in hard-to-access sources.
The three pamphlets printed in this volume are well known by name: Antequam essent clerici, Disputatio inter clericum et militem and Quaestio in utramque partem. Almost all histories and textbooks make reference to these documents; but few students have ever read them or even seen them, and it is for the benefit of such students that they are now published. Completely new editions of the Latin texts have been made from the manuscripts, and are printed on the left-hand pages, with an English translation on the right-hand page. Anyone who wishes to compare the translations with the originals will therefore be able to do so easily. There is also a comprehensive introduction and bibliography by the editor.
This book will provide a valuable resource to students of one of the most important controversies of the middle ages.
--three pamphlets relating to the controversy between Pope Boniface VIII and King Philip the Fair of France, regarding clerical taxation and secular jurisdiction, that culminated in an attempt by the King of France's ministers to forcibly depose, or assassinate, the Pope
--material fully edited or translated into English for the first time
--parallel edition of Latin text and English translation
--full editorial apparatus of introduction and bibliography

Book Description
Are there heroes anymore? What role, if any, does faith play in the life of high-paid, famous athletes?
Through the words of a wide range of popular athletes, Champions of Faith reveals that heroes still exist and that for many of those who take their role-model status seriously, faith plays a major part in their success and their witness. Over a period of two years, author Tom O'Toole, a devout Catholic and seasoned journalist, interviewed Catholic sports heroes such as Sammy Sosa, Lou Holtz, Mike Ditka, Dave Wannstedt, Suzie McConnell-Serio, Lenny Wilkens, "Rudy" Ruettiger, Alberto Salazar, Bobby Allison, Danny Abramowicz, Tara Lipinski, Ray Meyers, Fr. John Smyth, and Cammi Granto.
Champions of Faith collects their stories of triumph and struggle, belief and doubt and offers wisdom, humor, and insight into the life of faith to form an inspiring book for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Customer Reviews:
The Role Models We Need.......2007-06-14
Getting committed Catholics to share their faith is tougher than getting a Trappist to do a monologue. O'Toole manages to get these champions to share the meaningful role of their faith in their lives and their successes.
I never knew this side of Lenny Wilkins whom I have always admired as a class guy. Ditka is a boyhood hero since my dad got him to speak to our parish Holy Name Society in about 1963. Lou Holtz is a blast.
When I was a boy, reading the stories of sports heroes was inspiring to me. This book will do the same for today's kids. Buy it and give it to your children, and grandchildren. My God son loved it!
Nice Chicago Sports centered book on the Faith.......2002-05-31
Not the smoothest of writing styles, but a great subject and intense attitude of the Catholic faith.
Written in interview style this book does not flow as it could. The sports stars are interesting and the faith spoken by most of them is clear and powerful but the "too live" interview style weakened the message for me. I was hoping to get some intense Catholic sound bites from great sports heroes but I came away feeling that it could have been stronger and easier to read.
It does feature quite a few Chicago area sports people so it gets my Chicago thumbs up. But sports and faith should be stronger than this book gives off.
Read Me.......2001-12-19
If you are a Christian and are interested in athletics at any level, this is a book you should read. Or buy it for a special friend. O'Toole explores the connection to Faith for some names you will recognise. Yes, there are still heroes and they will not be drawn in by the dark forces that assail those who strive for greatness. O'Toole's combination of Christionaity and journalism makes for a very readable narative. I heartily recommend it.
It is about time..........2001-07-11
Finally, someone has written about the persistent connection between athletics and christianity without excerpting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes playbook. The author manages to get hard cases like Mike Ditka to speak openly about their faith; not an easy task as Catholic athletes (unlike their born-again christain cousins) seem reluctant to share such intimate stories. Or perhaps no one besides this author has bothered to ask. I keep thinking that these athletes and coaches would be great models to Catholic kids, if only they knew the stories.
I particularly liked the Lenny Wilkens interview, the rare combination of Catholic-African-American athlete.
Only one question: where is the Bill Bradley interview? I learned during the recent presidential campaign that Bradley is a Catholic convert. I'll wait for the sequel.
Honest, funny, and holy........2001-05-28
Enjoyed the book. Liked the way many of the athletes covered tied into one another. They knew each other, worked together, spoke of each other, etc. Was as honest portrayal of those featured without unnecessary dialogue. Great intellectual writer who writes from the heart and pays attention to details. Buy one ... buy three ... and give them as gifts.

Book Description
Few films have had the impact or retained the popularity of The Maltese Falcon. An unexpected hit upon its release in 1941, it helped establish the careers of John Huston and Humphrey Bogart while also helping both to transform the detective genre of movies and to create film noir. This volume includes an introduction by its editor and a shot-by-shot continuity of the film, as well as essays on its production, on literary and film traditions it drew upon, and on its reputation and influence over the last half century. Included are reviews from the time of the film's original release, the enthusiastic French response in 1946 that helped define film noir, and a close formal anaylsis of the film. In addition, the volume contains a comparison of this version to earlier film versions of the Dashiell Hammett novel, and helpful explorations of cultural, historical, and psychoanalytic issues. Like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon has attained iconic status; this volume will contribute to the pleasure its many fans find in viewing the film again and again. William Luhr is a professor of English at St. Peter's College in New Jersey. He is the author of Raymond Chandler and Film and co-author of Blake Edwards and other books.

Customer Reviews:
L.A. Crazy.......2007-06-04
There are some really crazy stories in this book; the LAPD history is most interesting and a bit scary. I would have liked a few more murders and not so many 'monster' stories, but I still really enjoyed it and loved that each story was only a few pages long. Lots of great photographs too.
If you love the seedy underbelly..........2007-04-02
If you love the seedy underbelly of all things that glitter (I know I do!), you GOTTA get this book! Great history!
HARD TO PUT DOWN.......2006-07-08
Covers most anything of mystery about L.A. and then some. From the extremely weird, to Hollywood scandals. No one is spared here; from Barbara Streisand to Keanu Reeves. But the one highlight for me was the mention of one of my most frightening childhood memories, the strange appearance of what we in South Central commonly referred to as "The Wolf Woman." You don't find much on this eerie phenomenon of the early 1960s. Mr. Young has done his homework well. You won't find it easy to put down, especially if you're from L.A.
everything you REALLY wanted to know about LA.......2004-07-18
If you like your scandal mixed with history, or vice versa, you will like this chatty book of scandals and the true story of what makes LA tick. Some times the author uses a tad to much pschyo-speak, but a throughtly enjoyable book for those who want to look behind the red carpet, and into the bedrooms.
Now the truth. Mysteries in Hollywood, L.A. and Lancaster.........2003-08-30
This book contains 297 full pages of the truth you want to know. Los Angeles and Hollywood are full of rumors, gossip and mysteries. This book will tell you a little history, what people are saying, what happened, and THE TRUTH. Now you will know the truth of...Is Tom Cruise Gay?, Is John Travolta gay?, Did Barbara Streisand do porno? Who does now!, What happened to Marilyn Monroe, Sam Cooke and Jayne Mansfield. Did Dennis Hopper contact a UFO?, Which actors and rock stars are big or hung? The story of the tiki god (fertility god) with the three-foot hard on at Trader Vic's. Also included is the Elizabeth Lake creature at the lake located 15 miles west of Lancaster, California. Indians once claimed the lake to be a passageway to the underworld, a passageway designed by the devil himself. Also, does Southern California have earthquake weather? There are 98 mysteries in this book, the story and the truth will be revealed to you. Also the truth of Jimmy Hoffa's death is on page 278.

Book Description
These cryptograms, from the National Puzzlers' League, won't be easy because the creators have taken pains to remove the easiest steps usually available to solvers. Regularly occurring articles and conjunctions are gone; the sentences often don't even have the rhythms of ordinary speech. But that will make the reward even sweeter once the answers are found.
Customer Reviews:
the puzzler.......2005-12-30
I loved Sit & Solve Cryptograms, but I was very disappointed with S&SC#2. The authors were more interested in finding quotes that didn't contain words like "the" than they were in finding interesting and meaningful quotes. Most were just a bunch of jibberish. Also, the font used is very small and close together, making it very difficult to read what you've solved.
Won't buy this book.......2005-01-15
Although I love to do cryptogram puzzles, I won't be buying this or any other book of puzzles with a toilet seat on the cover. For this puzzle-doer, an instant turn-off. Sorry!

Book Description
'Tougher Than Leather' tells the inside story of Run-DMC's astonishing rise to fame from the obscurity of Hollis. Queens to the kleig-lit heights of pop music fame. It is a story that has inspired important music makers for the last 15 years, including the Beastie Boys, Will Smith, Public Enemy, NWA, Master P, Jay-z, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit and Eminem-all of whom know who opened the door for them. And now it can inspire you. 'Tougher Than Leather' was originally published in 1987 and is reissued here in a new edition, a must have for any serious music fan.
Customer Reviews:
Once The Kings,Always The Kings.......2003-04-05
I bought this book when I was in college and it soon went out of print.Thankfully it has returned.Despite a few mistakes in song lyrics, this book faithfully follows our leather clad heroes from childhood to stardom to superstardom. The story ends however at the release of the disasterous yet still somewhat entertaining film "Tougher than Leather".So kick up your shell-toe (no laces, please) adidas and enjoy a long overdue piece of rock and roll history.
Good book on the subject.......2002-12-09
This originally came out in the late 80s and could be looked upon as a typical fan bio for younger readers, but it's a tad more than that. It's a pretty good documentation of the early days of rap and Run-DMC's often overlooked role in literally bringing rap back from the dead, gaining fame as they did during an early low point in the genre in 1983. For those of us who were around during that period, this book will bring back good memories. For others, it's a good education.
Fresher than ever.......2002-11-26
I was a highschooler when Run-DMC made their first hits. Now I'm 35 years old and their music seems fresher than ever. But I never knew too much about Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay as people until I read this book. Now I see that they were just as serious and interesting behind the scenes as they were on records and onstage. And I also learned a lot about the early career of Russell Simmons and the founding of the Def Jam label with LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. Some day people will study Run-DMC the way that the baby boomers study the Beatles. Until then, this is the book to read.

Book Description
On May 3, 1945, the Royal Air Force attacked a fleet of ships carrying ten thousand survivors of the Neuengamme concentration camp. The war was nearly over, and the survivors had endured one of history's most hellish ordeals, only to die at the hand of their allies.
The bodies, in the striped black-and-white uniforms of camp prisoners, were soon washing ashore on the beach by the town of Timmendorf, near the Baltic port of Neustadt. Benjamin Jacobs, then twenty-five, survived by escaping the hold and clinging to wreckage. He was one of only 350 survivors, and one of the last of those. Days before, Jacobs had boarded the Cap Arcona, along with thousands of other prisoners. A commandeered luxury liner, the Cap Arcona was a dilapidated wreck. Nearby, the freighter Theilbeck, in similar condition, was also attacked.
There is reason to believe the Germans were intending to sink it themselves. Though they claimed the prisoners were headed to Sweden, the ships may have been nonfunctional. The RAF believed the ships contained escaping SS officers. Tragically, British intelligence may have known who was on the ships, which may explain why the RAF has sealed the records until 2045. This story appears in no history books-not in Germany, England, or the United States. No one tells it. So Benjamin Jacobs must.
Customer Reviews:
Actually, I Found The Book Lacking Quite a Bit. .......2007-01-20
If you're contemplating purchase of this book, odds are, you already know something about the Cap Arcona tragedy. This book won't teach you much more. This was written from one survivor's perspective, and regrettably, a lot of the book deals with life in the camps and the march to the Cap Arcona rather than the sinking or the attack itself. It takes a painfully long time to get to the attack on the ship, and once there, the details are slim and as I stated, from only one rather limited perspective. This one's worth getting if it's on sale, but the photos are poor and this book doesn't do the 5,000 plus victims of the Cap Arcona justice. Both books on the Wilhelm Gustloff sinking are far superior to this much larger volume.
Survival, tragedy, cover-up, history: this book has it all!.......2005-04-25
Just when they thought help was on the way, the survivors of the concentration camp where attacked by their supposed rescuers. This gripping story is a chronicle of the will to survive against tragic and overwhelming odds. We must all bear witness to this uncomfortable piece of history.
gripping report.......2005-02-01
This books is a gripping report of a tragedy that should never be forgotten.
A Secret That Must Be Shared.......2004-12-23
The 100-Year Secret is the tragic story of how thousands of concentration camp inmates, mostly Jews, were killed when the RAF mistakingly attacked the ships that they had been forced on by the SS. What makes this even more of a tragedy is that this happened hours before the British occupied this section of Germany. The survival of one of the authors, Benjamin Jacobs, and his brother, as well as the others who made it to shore is the true miracle of the story, which is one that had to be told. My only criticism is that the book could have been a bit better written as I found it hard to follow in certain spots. That is the reason for a rating of a four as opposed to a five. However, the story is such a compelling one that any short comings in style are more than overcome by its substance and I highly recomend this book. If the reader is interested, a more complete and, in my opinion, better written story of Benjamin Jacob's experiences is available in The Dentist of Auschwitz, A Memoir.
If It Were Not True It Would Be Unbelievable.......2004-12-03
Like other classic Holocaust accounts (Art Spiegelman's Maus books and Ilona Karmel's An Estate of Memory are 2 that come to mind), The-100-Year-Secret brings to life the torture and misery concentration camp inmates endured at the hands of the Nazis. Unlike other Holocaust accounts, this book tells what--if it were not true--would be an almost unbelievable story of the death of thousands of concentration camp survivors at the hands (or airplanes) of the British.
The story of the sinking of inmate-filled ships in Neustadt Bay on May 3, 1945 is simultaneously riveting and heartbreaking. The authors vividly describe the events leading up to the tragedy, both from the point of view of the inmates (of which Mr. Jacobs was one) and that of the British fighter pilots who flew the tragic mission that sunk the ships.
How Jacobs and Pool were able to recreate this story when the official records of it remain sealed for another forty years is beyond me. But recreate it they did, powerfully. You will not be able to put this book down until you have finished it, and once you finally do put it down you will continue to see the images of that frightful night in Neustadt Bay for a very long time.

Book Description
Conflicting interests and conflicting attitudes toward the war characterized the uneasy relationship between Washington and Hollywood during World War II. There was deep disagreement within the film-making community as to the stance towards the war that should be taken by one of America's most lucrative industries. Hollywood Goes to War reveals the powerful role played by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Office of War Information--staffed by some of America's most famous intellectuals including Elmer Davis, Robert Sherwood, and Archibald MacLeish--in shaping the films that were released during the war years. Ironically, it was the film industry's own self-censorship system, the Hays Office and the Production Code Administration, that paved the way for government censors to cut and shape movies to portray an idealized image of a harmonious American society united in the fight against a common enemy. Clayton R. Koppes and Gregory D. Black reconstruct the power struggles between the legendary producers, writers, directors, stars and politicians all seeking to project their own visions onto the silver screen and thus to affect public perceptions and opinion.

Politics, Profits and Propaganda.......2005-08-26
`Hollywood Goes to War" is the biography of a federal government agency, the Office of War Information (1942-45.) The OWI - not to be confused with the OSS, OGR, OCD or any other agency in that alphabet-soup happy era - was a creation of the Roosevelt Administration whose purpose was to control the message contained in American movies during the duration. In other words, it was a propaganda agency which, as authors Koppes and Black explain in the preface, issued instruction manuals to the studios, sat in on story conferences, reviewed screenplays, pressured studios to change scripts and even scrap pictures, and sometimes even wrote dialogue for key speeches. Politicians, even in a democracy that prides itself on its tolerance of free speech, aren't above trying to spin a message now and then. Spinning is usually done as covertly as possible. World War II was seen as a `total' war, though, and controlling the content of Hollywood movies (employing , as they put it, a `strategy of truth') was seen as a necessity. One of the chapter titles phrase the problem succinctly enough; Will this movie help us win the war? OWI was created to arbitrate and answer that question.
Of course, the demands of propaganda are different than those of mass entertainment, and HGtW offers a few surprising battles. None more so, perhaps, than OWI's strong reaction against Preston Sturges' frothy screwball masterpiece, 1942's Palm Beach Story, a movie HGtW quotes an OWI reviewer characterizing as "a fine example of what should not be made in the way of escape pictures." Palm Beach Story's transgression seems to have been that it didn't take the war quite seriously enough. The idle rich spent money with frivolous abandon, distressed lovers ignored the war and its issues. It seems reasonable enough that OWI would squash movies verging too close to such socially realistic topics as gangsterism, draft dodging, labor unrest, racial conflict, and any number of other ills. It's the inoffensive domestic movies that OWI objected to that make HGtW so fascinating. Still, there was a war to be won and movies were a great medium for getting The Message out. That the heavy, heavy hand of a governmental agency might kill whatever value the messenger had seemed to have been ignored now and then. Another area of burning interest to OWI was the depiction of our allies. Not surprisingly OWI loved the movie `Mission to Moscow' ("...the most notorious example of propaganda in the guise of entertainment ever produced by Hollywood ") and Keys to the Kingdom, a movie which, as Koppes and Black put it, "reflected the Roosevelt administration's propaganda needs, which in turns were based on a blend of ignorance, apathy, and optimism about the real situation." The critics hated them, too. Besides movies about our allies, the home front and combat war movies, OWI worried over the depiction of the enemy. In this case the Germans and the Japanese. With an eye to the post-war world OWI preferred that the typical German was seen as a separate entity from the German ruling elite. The Japanese, the beast in the jungle, were more or less a lost cause. OWI loved Darryl Zanuck's ambitious and expensive `Wilson,' which presented a glowing and humanizing portrait of Woodrow Wilson, the martyr to the dream of the League of Nations. The message in this case was the need for a league of nations in the post-war world. The result was an expensively mounted yawn fest that is practically unwatchable.
As someone who watches a lot of old movies, I enjoyed Hollywood Goes to War quite a bit. Any book about managed information in the form of government propaganda is bound to raise disturbing issues, and to their credit Koppes and Black present their story clearly without undue editorializing. Anyone who's a fan of American movies made during World War II will find this book educational and entertaining.
