Helpful for Younger Women and Those Breaking into the Business World.......2007-03-30
As the last woman standing on NBC's hit show "The Apprentice," Amy Henry has a lot to say about business. Rather than focusing on her television experience, however, Henry draws from her eight-year career of managing multi-million dollar software projects and offers a host of strategies for success, particularly in male-dominated industries. She insists on the power of networking with the big boys; stealth bragging, so that people will know about your accomplishments; speaking up and using your charm, beauty and womanly intuition. Henry's advice is similar to those found in other books, but her no-nonsense, woman-to-woman approach will be helpful and enjoyable for younger women and those breaking into the business world.
A very good book for the Modern Career Woman........2006-06-02
I really like this book, there was a lot of information and substance. Although she was on the Apprentice, Ms. Henry rarely discussed it. She focused on the mistakes that are holding women back in business and showing how to overcome them with very good information. She also provides quotes from other successful women in business.
I learned a lot.
good stuff.......2005-05-30
In responce the review stating "Most of the book is filled with common sense"
This book is filled with what *some* people learned naturally and consider common sense. Some people, like me, do not consider this common sense. I'm male but I haven't mastered the art of interacting in a male dominated social business environment. (When I was young, I never learned to play with little boys much either.) So I think this book has lots of valuable information already - and I'm only 1/5 of the way through.
Great book about what it takes for women in business!!.......2005-04-20
After reading other women in business books, I read this & thought it was great. This book talks about men & women in the workplace & how we need to act different to get the same things. This is a quick read & gets right to the point.
I really believe this book has valuable information to help women, some of it basic, all of it in the modern workplace. Having worked in an office for over 10 years, I have seen mistakes that could have been avoided by reading this book.
Some of the things Amy writes about are:
-Tooting your own horn
-Staying away from gossipy people, they will do nothing for your career but give you a bad reputation
-Sexuality in the workplace - how to act & dress sophisticated rather than sexy
-How to ask for & negotiate a job offer, promotion, raise & benefits
-Networking with the right people
-How to deal with emotions at work & picking your battles
-How to portray the right image
-Not to take things personally
The list goes on. There's a lot of helpful information for women in business & I already feel empowered having read this book. I think this is a must for every woman starting out in the business world!
What is up with people writing books after being on TV?.......2005-03-08
WOW~!!! this book is like a long paper work of taking bits and pieces of great business books that already exsists.
you know I can't wait for Omorosa's book to come out, I mean the content is going to be the same but I just want to prove my theory to my friends that what if your on TV for more than 6 weeks you get cocky as hell.
If you really want to spend money.. I suggest this book.

Book Description
Albert Belle on hitting: "RBI's win games . . . and they can make you a ton of money."
Albert Belle on his reputation as a jerk: "I'm moody. I know that. I've made some mistakes. But if I was a bad person, would someone pay me $55 million...?"
Albert Belle after nearly running over a trick-or-treating teenager who had egged the slugger's home in Cleveland on Halloween: "As soon as I caught up with him, I slammed on the brakes . . . The truck kind of skidded, and it slid and bumped him. He fell down . . . [then] he jumped back up and started running . . . It's a shame when people target athletes. If they had done the same thing to my next-door neighbor and he had chased them, they wouldn't have filed a report."
Don't Call Me Joey brings you the full story, told in his own words, of one of the most disagreeable sports figures in recent memory, the most loathed pro baseball player since Ty Cobb. It's all here-Belle's tirades and scufflings with reporters, including a profane outburst leveled at NBC reporter Hanna Storm during the 1996 World Series (which earned him an unprecedented $50,000 fine); his beaning of a fan with a baseball during a game; his high-speed chase of two Cleveland teenagers who had egged his house on Halloween; his unprovoked hit-and-run on diminutive Milwaukee second baseman, Fernando Vina; his obscene gestures to heckling Indians fans; his hate-hate relationship with the media; and his non-appearance (for his own safety) at the 1997 All-Star Game, held in Cleveland, where he had played for nearly a decade.

Philip Lisa Delivers the Best Book on James Bond.......2001-03-18
Philip Lisa is the driving force behind this book. He is a man of extensive knowledge on the subject of James Bond and his ability to discuss this subject is boundless. This book covers each of the Broccoli / United Artists James Bond films. These are the official films. The book gives objective information on each title written with editorial doses of interest which maintains a consistency of perspective from cover to cover. There are no favorites in the traditional sense. The authors know very well that no filmmaker or group of filmmakers ever intentionally makes an inferior motion picture. It is all a matter of how well the filmmakers combine their efforts and produce a finished product. The focus of the book is the filmmaking, not hype or glamour. The Bond films have always maintained a high ideal of production standards and this book examines that process. Besides the filmmaking this book also examines the James Bond phenomena from product merchandising (including books, toys, music, videos, games, etc.) to the cultural impact of Ian Fleming's hero. It even covers such offshoots such as the animated TV series "James Bond Jr." The book also contains key interviews with members of the acting and production crews. It is also profusely and beautifully illustrated with many colour photographs. I highly recommend this book. And take from me, Philip Lisa is more than just a contributor on this publication.
The Ultimate Book on the James Bond Film Series and Beyond.......2001-03-04
This is the best book concentrating on the James Bond films series and the phenomena it created. Written with great knowledge, gusto and inspiration this an excellent work on the subject. What is very good about this informative work is that the two authors never editorialize in a derogatory manner. If something in a film did not work, they give us their interpretation of what went wrong and suggest other possibilities. There are many unique photographs illustrating this book. It also covers James Bond Collecting. It is well written and I highly recommend it. My copy goes up to "Licence to Kill" but I do know that another printing followed which included "GoldenEye."
Lee Pfeiffer does it again.......1998-08-25
For all the James Bond fans, anything which is more intriguing is welcome at any time. From the time in 1957 when the first movie of James Bond came alive on the small screen to the first feature movie (Dr. No.) in 1962, every single item has been a treasure for a James Bond fan. It is really surprising that this book by Lee Pfeiffer has been missed out in author reviews. Considering the wealth of information that it offers about the celebrated facts of James Bond - the masterly creation of Ian Fleming and brought alive by Cubby Broccoli is a collectors dream. Having this book in the already thick treasure trove of Bond books, movies, cassettes, videos and trivia collection has been a matter of pride for me.
I wish that other Bond fans like me come forward and acknowledge the excellent documentation. As a sign off I would like to say that the book can be described in one word " INCREDIBLE"

Romanowski provides affectionate yet astute analysis of familiar, well-loved movies and television characters from Cinderella Man to Homer Simpson. Romanowski's confessional approach affirms a role for popular culture in faithful living. Practical, analytical approaches to content, meaning, and artistic style offer the tools to participate responsibly and imaginatively in popular cultural activities. An engaging read, this new edition introduces students and thoughtful readers to popular culture--one of the most influential forces in contemporary society.

Learning to Live in the World........2006-09-10
The basic premise of EYES WIDE OPEN is that in the realm of culture, Christians have been too complacent for far too long. Romanowski begins the book with an introduction illustrating why Christians should become involved in culture, specifically pop culture. In the following chapters the author gives a detailed description of what culture is, the "difference" between high culture and low culture (as well as an explanation of why there really isn't a difference), what often is associated with being "faith" friendly in popular art nowadays, what makes up a Christian worldview, the typical Hollywood cultural landscape, the importance of Christian criticism, etc. Towards the end of the book the author makes some very general suggestions about how Christians can become involved in pop culture and the last section of the book (appendix two) is a review of the movie TITANIC from a Christian perspective.
The book raises many salient points that Christians should be aware off. Culture is a part of our lives and as believers in Christ, we are called to be involved in the world. For someone who has never seriously considered these issues, EYES WIDE OPEN might serve as a wake-up call. Also, even though the book is directed towards the lay person, the book is written in such a way it could confuse someone who has never had a beyond-high-school-education. I was able to follow the book's over-arching structure and pattern but there were several times I found myself thinking, "If I hadn't heard any of this before, this would be really confusing." The other criticism I have of the book is that the book is marketed as an "easy-to-read guide for interpreting and evaluating popular culture as a Christian." The author appears to be at least an amateur critic of film and movies. In fact, the book was filled with references to films. However, there is a lack of references to television, music, the Internet, mainstream novels, etc: there is a section where the author talks about Bruce Springsteen and another section where he discusses the television show E.R. However, that's about it. It would have been nice to have another few appendixes at the end of the book where the author reviews a television show, an album, and perhaps a popular website or work of fiction. Also, since the author chose to review TITANIC instead of a more worthwhile film (just because it's the #1 grossing movie of all time is besides the point--just about every movie from 1933-1959 had a higher attendance than any film released since then) or instead of reviewing another movie, too, it dropped a notch in my estimation.
Overall, this is a decent book for a Christian lay person who is interested in becoming engaged in popular culture but has no idea how to go about that. It should provide a good foundation. For a more indepth approach check out ROARING LAMBS by Bob Briner or ADDICTED TO MEDIOCRITY by Franky Schaeffer.
Eyes Wide Open.......2002-01-29
Romanowski is skillful at paring down his previous work, Pop Culture Wars, and enhancing the practical aspects of interacting with Popular Culture as an evangelical Christian. He Gives the necessary background and history to contextualize his position, while providing the reader with good tools for thinking critically about popular art.
One note of critique would be that, though it is obvious that he has a commanding knowledge of film, it would be beneficial to explore other popular artforms and give current expamples. Along the same lines, the examples that he used to prove some critical comments directed to the evangelical Christian popular art (particularly the Christian Contemporary Music) community were a bit dated.
But overall, this is a book that I have and will continue to use in a classroom and small group setting because it packs a punch in a small space.
A practical, analytical & Christian-based approach to movies.......2001-09-12
Eyes Wide Open: Looking For God In Popular Culture is an easy-to-read, highly engaging guide for interpreting and evaluating popular culture from a Christian perspective and framework. William Romanowski (professor of communication arts and sciences at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan) offers a practical, analytical, and Christian-based approach to movies, music, and television programs, enabling the reader to engage the media that so saturates modern life. Romanowski's illuminating examples range from Casablanca to Titanic, from The Simpsons to ER, from Bruce Springsteen to Amy Grant. Eyes Wide Open is informative, rewarding, insightful, and strongly recommended reading for parents, pastors, teachers, and teens.
Solid treatise on Christianity and culture.......2001-06-26
Christians are not that much different than non-Christians when it comes to consumption of popular culture. All but the most legalistic watch many of the same movies, listen to the same music, and watch the same TV shows as everyone else. Romanowski realizes this, and with this book (along with others he has written) he analyzes the culture from a Christian perspective and gives the Christian, who is in the world but (hopefully) not of it, valuable tools for being a cultural critic. I would have rated this book higher, but for me it doesn't break a lot of new ground, and the appendices concerning an analysis of the movie "Titanic" could have been better utilized on a movie with more depth and meaning (even though I do admit that, like everyone else, I cried at the end of the movie). On the other hand, you've got to love a book with a chapter entitled "Christians Who Drink Beer" (even though, personally, I don't). Others who haven't read widely in this field like I have would surely give it a higher rating, because it is a very competent, easy to read book on an important subject.

Customer Reviews:
worked for me!.......2007-06-27
I am torn about giving this book 4 stars, and here's why:
I cannot stand the whole "for Dummies" series, I think the title is so demeaning -why would I want to read a book where the publisher just assumes I'm an idiot?
However, I did pick this one up while I was in the middle of a career crisis. And guess what? It worked. I had the book lying around for a while, and finally one morning I picked it up and started flipping through and landed on something that looked really interesting. I did further research and found a school in my area focusing only on this career, and I'm now attending the school happily.
So would it work for you? Maybe. Did it work for me? Heck yes.
A fresh approach.......2007-05-13
The book sets out an approach that considers what the job seeker truly wants in work.
Basic job hunting info and misleading career guidance.......2006-10-30
I came across this book when advising a friend's college-age child who was researching careers and was using this book.
On the plus side, the book does contain info on basic job search skills. I would say that most (if not all of it) is now widely available via the internet.
Very troubling was the inaccurate guidance regarding specific careers - some of it was just outdated, but some of it was inaccurate to the point of being "dangerous" for a reader with little knowledge or experience, and who would choose to spend time/effort pursuing a career based on the info in this book. I would have to recommend against using this book as a key source for making a career choice.
A note from this book's author.......2006-02-13
I am saddened by the utterly unfair and inappropriate posting here by one reader. She had not read the book, but because I am a mere moderate feminist rather than a radical one, she chooses to excoriate me here. A far more unbiased source, USA Today's review of my book said, "From finding the well-suited job to customizing it, this book is full of smart advice." In the Reader's Choice Poll, it was rated the #1 most useful career guide. Here on Amazon, you can read sample material from the book. I encourage you to do that before making your decision.
Misleading.......2004-02-24
Far too many of the suggested careers in this book are long shots, at best. Nemko makes it sound like if you're willing to get the necessary education or put some effort into getting some expreience, you can move into any of the niche areas he recommends in his book. If only that were true. Too many of his recommendations have long ago been discovered, or are simply areas in which your odds of being selected, even if you are a Harvard grad with impeccable credentials, are about the same as winning a state lottery.

Wine is Robert Mondavi's business, but it is also his life. The founder of the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, now in his mid-80s, tells the story of his business and his life, laying out the lessons he learned in each, with writer Paul Chutkow.
Beginning with the legendary fallout in the 1960s with his younger brother and the rest of his family over the direction of the family-owned Charles Krug Winery, Mondavi describes how, at the age of 52, he started the Mondavi Winery, with the vision of making his wines, and those of all California wineries, equal in reputation to France's. The way Mondavi tells it, he almost single-handedly built up not only his business, but also the reputation of Napa Valley as a tourist destination, and of wine as a source of good health. He emphasizes his vision, drive, perfectionism, willingness to innovate, and work ethic, attributing many of his values to his immigrant Italian parents.
But Mondavi acknowledges that there were many sour grapes, some of his own sowing: the fallout with his brother that led to a multimillion dollar court settlement, the breakup of his 40-year marriage, the friction between him and his two sons over the winery, and the financial crisis after the company went public in 1993. Now, happily remarried, relations improved with his sons, and the business a successful global corporation, Mondavi sums up his life's lessons: "What you need is common sense, a commitment to hard work and the courage to go your own way." He also highlights 15 basic components of his philosophy of success, such as having confidence in yourself and always staying positive. He writes, "Out of all the rigidities and mistakes of my past, I've learned one final lesson, and I'd like to see it engraved on the desk of every business leader, teacher, and parent in America: The greatest leaders don't rule. They inspire." --Dan Ring
Book Description
In 1965, after a notorious family feud, Robert Mondavi-then fifty-two years old-was thrown out of his family's winery. Far from defeated, Mondavi was dedicated to a vision of creating a superior wine. What has happened since that fateful day is one of the greatest success stories of American business. Today, the Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most respected in the world, and Mondavi is the man who is most responsible for the worldwide recognition of American wine making, as well as changing America's palate for fine wine and fine food. In Harvests of Joy, Mondavi shares how, through his passion for excellence, he achieved this extraordinary position, one he reached not without pain and sacrifice. With invaluable insider tips on his approach to both wine making and to running a business, Mondavi's inspirational story is "a grand example of the fact that in America you can pretty much be, do, or accomplish, whatever you set out to." (Ventura County Star)
Customer Reviews:
Wine, Money, Real Estate, Love and Life...This is it!.......2003-04-13
This is a fascinating tell of Mr.Mondavi's first life and his second life.
His first life begins with his growing up on his family's vineyard. His second life, and where the real story begins, is his having to break away from the family, in his 40's, and start all over again from scratch.
Everyone knows Sam Walton's late entreperneurial start, more people should know Mr.Mondavi's story. By all accounts he was the father of the Napa Valley boom and every bit of the story is riveting.
I was thoroughly impressed by this work and learned a prime lesson on individuality. Mr.Mondavi had a dream that was counter to his family and he could do nothing but pursue it. He had to set the trend and he did. Wine lovers around the world should be grateful to him.
Thanks Mr.Mondavi, this book was really a Harvest of Joy.
Understanding the joie de vivre.......2002-07-16
A must read book for anyone who not only has a "joie de vivre", but wishes to explore the foundation for truly appreciating the best. Mr Mondavi provides such insights in a most enjoyable and readable manner. Baccus himself would be delighted to read this book.
the book's OK.......2002-06-01
I share some of the criticisms of other contributors on Amazon who have given the book the lowest possible rating. It is wordy, repetitive, and poorly edited. The author himself revealed that he is not a great lover of books and his literary style indicates it. Granted, it is worthwhile to have this book, in spite of its technical faults, for the sake of having access and insight to the history of the man who virtually pioneered the art of making fine wine in Napa. While I found several passages irritating to read, I could not put the book down. The chapter describing the inception of Opus One with the Baron is great stuff.
Early on the author stated his intention to make state-of-the-art Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Johannisberg Riesling. As the text progresses the author trumpets the region's many successes in the first three noble varietals, and adds the favourable results obtained with Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. He talks about his many trips to Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany, Spain, and the Mosel, to learn how the established top estates operate. Inexplicably, he makes no effort to explain what happened in his quest to make fine Riesling. I find that very surprising in light of his comment late in the book that he drinks a lot more Sauvignon/Fume Blanc than Chardonnay.
The commentary provided by his sons and his second wife is very well presented, more tightly focused and cohesive than the rest of the book.
On a personal note I was glad he mentioned the Bible's approval of wine consumption; however, he should also have emphasized consumption in moderation (see Ecclesiastes 5).
The description of the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville CA was needless to say entertaining. The author claims half a million visitors a year, and I can assert the reasonableness of this claim based on having seen it very busy during a very rainy Sunday while many of the other wineries in the area had no visitors at all. It's most definitely worth a visit, if you have a designated driver.
This book is recommended with reservations for the unique experience it offers.
Inspirational.......2002-03-30
Besides being a well written and interesting story to read, the fact that Mr. Mondavi started a new business adventure at the age of 52 is very inspirational to any entrepeneur.
His passion for high quality and his vision for the wine industry brought a new dimension to this activity, not only in the Napa Valley, but also, in far away places as Chile.
I enjoyed very much the reading and the honest advices that Mr. Mondavi gathered in 85 years.
Awful!.......2001-04-07
I found the amateur writing style and repetitiveness of this book to be unbearable. Mondavi repeats himself, re-repeats himself then describes it again for the reader throughout the book.
Further, the narcissism of Mr. Mondavi was so replete in every chapter that the book was a self serving platform rather than informative or entertaining. I was truly frustrated and disappointed I wasted any time reading this one (the first time I have ever said that about a book!). It was almost totally pointless. It should have been one-third of the size and it needed a worthy editor.

Book Description
Marcus Spiegel, a German Jewish immigrant, served with the 67th and 120th Ohio Volunteer regiments during the Civil War. He saw action in Virginia, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana, where he was fatally wounded in May 1864. These letters to Caroline, his wife, reveal the traumatizing experience of a soldier and the constant concern of a husband and father.
Customer Reviews:
A great account of one man's War experience in letters.......2006-12-14
Marcus Spiegel may have been atypical in that he was Jewish, but his experiences in the war are much more universal. This is a great book for highlighting the changing views of the purpose of the war, and the personal struggles many Union soldiers went through--in particular those who were northern Democrats--as the aims of the wat changed from restoration of the Union to also include ending the institution of slavery. Spiegel's story is the story of a loyal Democract--a Democrat who is loyal to his commander-in-chief, Republican Abraham Lincoln, and wh serves his country faithfully nonetheless. His story also highlights his slow transformation in his own wordl view. At the outset Spiegel shared the racist views of most of his white neighbors, and disliked abolitionists. By the end of the war, however, he considers himself an abolitionist of a sort. If you want to begin to understand the complexity of northern attitudes toward slaves and slavery, this is a good place to start.

Book Description
With insightful essaysÂin English and SpanishÂfrom Louis A. Pérez Jr., AmericaÂ's preeminent Cuba scholar, and Ambrosio Fornet, renowned Cuban author and screenwriter, Cuba: Picturing Change introduces the work of photographer E. Wright Ledbetter, whose images create a captivating portrait of the remarkable Cuban culture as it faces the complex forces of change.
Made from visits to Cuba over a four-year period (1997-2001), LedbetterÂ's photographs take us on a compelling journey within a culture pressured by numerous internal and external difficulties, where the resulting climate is saturated with the tension and uncertainty brought on by a political and economic future that continues to evolve with no clear direction.
Graphically alluring and rich in metaphor, LedbetterÂ's photographs focus on the overwhelming power and spirit of the Cuban people. They also explore what he believes is an imminent Cuban culture shift and inevitable redefinition of Cuban identity.
As LedbetterÂ's visual narrative unfolds, however, the photographs begin to reveal a greater depth and mystery, framed by the honest eye of a humanist and the compassion and perspective of an artist.
Cuba is a setting in which the questions surrounding its future become the questions all cultures face as social systemsÂpolitical, economic, and otherwiseÂhelp shape human experience.
The photographs and essays of Cuba: Picturing Change emerge as a beautiful, balanced, and inclusive body of work. They capture one view of Cuba on the cusp of centuries, and at the same time explore the timeless art of human perseverance and the powerful current of the ever-changing human story.
Large format photographs help define Cuba as seen through this photographerÂ's lens over a four-year period. Eloquent essays accompany the images.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Photography and Insight into Cuba!.......2002-11-01
I was drawn to the book by the powerful and fun photographic images. Ledbetter does an outstanding job capturing the images of Cuban life in a way that allows you to both celebrate it and to empathise with the struggle of the Cuban people.
The Essays are an unexpected extra in a book of this nature that make the work a multi-dimensional experience. It appeals to those interested in both Photography and Cuba. I highly recommend it!
Beauty, spirit & mystery.......2002-10-31
This magnificent collection of photographs captures the beauty, spirit and mystery of Cuba, the USA's often-overlooked neighbor... Ledbetter's clear, passionate and respectful eye has created a stunning work -- the book takes us far more deeply into the Cuban culture than the soundbites of recent news stories (Elian Gonzales, President Carter's visit) allow. Ledbetter's photographs and the accompanying essays make this book essential for anyone who wishes to understand Cuba more fully; the book also richly rewards the reader who simply appreciates great photography.
Book Description
The management of coastal and ocean fisheries is highly contentious. Industry interests focus on maximizing catches while conservationists and marine scientists have become increasingly concerned about dramatic declines in fish stocks and the health of ecosystems. Besides attempting to mediate among these interests, government agencies have pursued their own agendas, which have often lagged behind shifts in scientific understanding and public attitudes about the productivity of the oceans and uses of marine wildlife.
From Abundance to Scarcity examines the historical evolution of U.S. fisheries policy and institutions from the late 19th century to the present day, with an emphasis on changes since World War II. Based on archival research and interviews with dozens of key players in marine policymaking, it traces the thinking, legislation, mandates, and people that have shaped the various agencies governing fisheries in the United States. The book:
- discusses the development of federal programs in marine biological sciences and the evolution of scientific understanding about marine wildlife populations
- describes the work of federal fisheries programs in promoting the interests of the fishing industry
- considers the response of agencies to factors such as dam-building and coastal development that have led to increased pollution and habitat loss
- examines the shifts in understanding and values that underlie major legislation including the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Magnuson-Stevens Act, and the Sustainable Fisheries Act
- examines the evolving relationship between federal agencies, the fishing industry, communities, and nongovernmental conservation organizations, with an eye toward future management practice
From Abundance to Scarcity sheds light on the sets of interests that have shaped U.S. fisheries policy, lending historical depth to current debates and providing a fuller understanding of current laws and regulations, and administrative structures and mechanisms. It offers an insightful overview for professionals involved with fisheries management or the fishing industry, conservationists working on marine issues, and students and scholars of marine policy and affairs, environmental policy and law, or public policy and administration.
