Great work! Capture's Mika's spirit!.......2001-07-24

This is another great piece of work by Christopher Hilton. Now, don't think I'm a Hilton fan. I'm simply familiar with Hilton's work. I purchased this title for the simple reason that Hakkinen is my all time hero. I recommend this title to any Formula One or Hakkinen fan. Do note that it only goes up to the 1997 season, but that is what you want to know about anyway, right? Learn about Mika's "casual" living style and sometimes a little too "carefree" life as an up and coming driver. There will be laughs along the way without doubt!

An interesting read 3 years on.......2000-08-14

Now that Mika has one the World Drivers Championship (twice), this makes an interesting read.

Although seemingly distant, and lacking interest in his chosen sport, this book highlights the talents that Mika clearly has in order to achieve his dream.

With help from his boss, Ron Dennis, Hilton highlights how Dennis and Hakkinen spent many long hours coupled together, penetrating each other's heads and, ultimately, getting the best out of each other. The book's title expresses this in concise terms.

While illustration is sparse, it spares us the pointless "page filling" of many lesser books, and gets to the point.

A great read for any fan of Mika, and McLaren.

A fine book but not the definitive account we're waiting for.......1999-01-24

Christopher Hilton's biography of Finnish racing driver Mika Hakkinen was written before Hakkinen won the Formula 1 World Drivers Championship at the wheel of his West McLaren Mercedes last year.

Hilton opens his story with the final fateful moments leading up to Hakkinen's serious accident during qualifying for the 1995 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, and days later, Hakkinen's regaining consciousness in the intensive care ward of an Adelaide hospital.

He then takes us back to the beginning, retracing Hakkinen's childhood and early racing career in Finland through to his inevitable move to Britain, his progress through the junior racing formulae and the break into the big-time with the now-defunct Lotus F1 team.

The story ends towards the end of 1997 just, it can be argued, when it was getting REALLY interesting!

Hilton's style is idiosyncratic, but readers who are happy to put up with his asides and personal touches will be rewarded with an empathetic, well-researched and ultimately authoritative work on the latest F1 World Champion.

But despite Hilton's claims that Hakkinen remains one of the most accessible F1 racers of his time, this book lacks a certain something.

Hakkinen certainly comes across as unaffected, accessible and supremely talented racing a car at breathtaking speed is, after all, only ìdoing what comes naturallyí, as Hilton's book is subtitled.

But unlike biographies/autobiographies of previous world champions Alan Jones' collaboration with Keith Botsford, ìDriving Ambitioní, or Botsford's collaboration with Keke Rosberg, ìKekeí spring to mind immediately one leaves Hilton's book with a little sense of knowing the man.

Even one of Hilton's own previous efforts, Ayrton Senna The Hard Edge of Genius, gave a far greater insight into its subject. Perhaps that was an indication of Senna himself; he was known to be a man given to deeper thoughts than many of his contemporaries and rivals.

Work may be underway even now on a book by Hakkinen's own hand. But for his fans, and they are legion, for the time being at least this book is about the best there is.

Hilton has done a fair job, and shown impressive prescience in selecting Hakkinen as a candidate for a biography. It needs to be updated, to take account of the 1998 championship-winning season.

Hilton's book will sell well and satisfy the inevitable post-championship demand for information on the man of the moment. But it's not the definitive essay on Hakkinen that his fans, and fans of motorsport generally, are waiting for.

I think Leo is cute and all that, but to actually devote an entire picture book to this higly arrogant and pretentious star is sinful. More importantly, its boring.

This book is rather comprehensive, of course, except that its pre-'The Beach'. So we get to see lots of Leo in his Titanic hey-day, looking as swollen as a goose. Thankfully, there are no nude shots of this actor. Anyone whos seen 'The Beach' knows the body that Leo has and not many people are interested in it, I understand. I for one, am not.

In any case, if Leo is your cup of tea, visit a bookstore and flick through this, but for heaven's sake don't buy it! Not at all recommended.

Maturity of a very elegant young man.......2000-05-21

I am not a heart-throb teen-ager, in fact it has been many years since I was a teen-ager. I speak for a lot of us who watched this young man as a child actor and somehow always knew in the back of our minds that the potential was there for one great actor. I think this book certainly reflects some of the roles that he played which I believe he feels were not his best but it was all a learning experience which has set the precedent for the great actor that he is today. The book gives a great review from the beginning of his career to the present. The only negative comment that I possible may have is the fact I would have liked to read a little more about his latest movie which of course was The Beach. Otherwise, it was a great book with a lot of coverage. I will look forward in the future to other books about this young man,s career.

This is a collection of Bob McCune's theories and work from back in the day on how to approach football. It is not that interesting apart from the vaguely humorous style, at times.

If you want something recent and relevant, looks elsewhere, if you want to read about the history and what this subject used to be like, this is ok.

Easy on the praise!.......2004-04-22

I bought this books years ago, read half of it and put it away. During a spell of Football (betting) Fever I picked it up again and I can easily see why I didn't read it the first time.

I found the book to be more fun to read the second time I picked it up but I still find it a bit thin on hints and advice.

Ergo: A nice read well worth a few bucks but don't expect too much.

I have had this book in my collection for the last 10 years. It was the first book I ever purchased on the subject, and after reading and buying 5 additional, I have to say that this is the best book on football handicapping available. It is pre-Internet, so do not expect to find info on on-line books. It covers most aspects well, and it very easy to understand. Well worth your $5.00.

Useful book.......2007-09-16

The book is very useful. However, the Latin phrases are probably no longer necessary in the U.S. legal practice.

I've noticed one error that is carried over from one edition to the next: in Index under the entry "in error" look for word "fallacioadmit." I speculate that a portion of text disappeared and fallacious was merged with admit. The words that follow admit do not appear to belong in the "in error" article.

Important book. The "Roget's" of the legal profession........2007-05-08

This book, now in its fourth edition, is an essential companion to Black's Law Dictionary, Garner's Legal Usage book, and other essential legal reference books. Great for law students, lawyers, judges, paralegals/legal assistants, and just about anyone else dealing with legal language. This book gives alternatives to stilted, overused, and misused, language. Worth the price (especially if one compare it on a site like Nextag, Shopzilla, and others).

"Good luck," my employer wished as he handed me a plane ticket and a tome of a background packet. I was leaving on a critical six-week business trip to an alien state in the midwest. No problem - except that five days prior the law review had accepted me as one of three evening division 2Ls for candidacy and my first case abstracts were due in twenty days. Hmmm . . .

From my hotel room, I scanned, identified, analyzed, condensed, reviewed, and rewrote the abstracts. Then did it again. And again. And again. But I was missing something. I was missing that "oomph" that propels a reader when reading legal material. And I didn't know what to do.

I decided to take a "creative" break down at the local (bookstore). Of course, I immediately gravitated to the law section of the store and, before you could say "double espresso, please," I had found it! Burton's Legal Thesaurus.

I opened the pages and my heart fluttered. Over 5,000 entries, legal synonyms for any legal term that came to mind, definitions, an overview of federal "plain language" requirements, associated legal concepts, and the list goes on! I wiped away a tear.

I rushed back to my hotel room and my fingers began flying over the laptop. My abstracts sang with power and precision! I could feel the reader compelled - nay, helpless - to turn the page! Burton's Legal Thesaurus had saved the day! I was now a jurisprudence scholar!

Eh, not really. But it really helped out when I didn't have access to my usual materials. However, one thing of which I can assure you, I'll be using this thesaurus for the rest of my career. If you've ever tried to write a legal document with a conventional thesaurus, you've probably felt the same way I did - close, but not close enough. But where do I find "close enough"? Read some more cases? Subscribe to a half dozen law journals? Hang out with the professors? This book definitely dispenses with that problem. You'll find everything you need to write a work filled with persuasion and vigor contained within its pages. If you're not that creative with legal lingo (as I, obviously, am not), you need to order it now. Frankly, you're putting yourself at a serious disadvantage if you don't.

This is a must read of a not too distant time when flying actually was fun and considered by most, exciting. It was a classy affair in the 60's to take an international flight and airlines actually served real fine food- including cherries jubilee flambee! The antics of the stewardesses is a time warp of the free love era and it is hysterical. A must read that will make you long for this bygone era next time you are cattle called onto your flight and forced to purchase "food" on board. Side note: the somewhat mythical "mile high club" began its origins in these very pages.

My daughter was going through her training as a flight attendant and I remembered this book - I read it when I was a teenager. I sent it to her as a surprise. Not only did she love it, she loaned it to everyone else in her class and they all got a great kick out of it. It's just a fun read.

This book was my mothers as a young teen and passed down to me when i turned 13 a few years ago. The book is wonderful, Its one of those books you start reading and dont want to put down thats how good it is.

I've read the whole series and they all are great.
you could read this book over and over again and never get tired of it.

I picked this up based solely on the reissue cover. I got into it and started wondering who the heck would talk like this, as a woman? Then, about 1/2 the way through, I read the intro and realized this was actually penned by a male who had interviewed a lot of stewardesses. It made me feel better that these weren't real women, but a man trying to sound like a woman.

This isn't a literary work, but it is a great beach read. Don't expect too much, and you'll be thrilled to join these two "women" on their careers. I was born well after the 60's, and it is fun to imagine how classy and upscale air travel was back then. It's certainly a contrast to the budget consciousness of today.

It was definitely a page turner, because I wanted to keep having more adventures in the crazy life of 60's stewardesses. Check this one out and have fun for a few hours.

Beautiful Women, Nicely Drawn........2007-08-15

If, for some reason, you were looking for an illustrated comic-book style publication - with some erotic lesbian content - then the `Liz & Beth' series is probably for you.

Beth is a beautiful brunette heroine (the brains) - and Liz is her blonde (and bimbo-ish) - but equally ravishing lover. Liz always gets herself into trouble - and Beth always comes to save her.

The heterosexuality of both Liz and Beth are established early - when they make love to men. But it's their own sexual tryst with each other - and other girls - which makes for delicious eye candy.

All of the younger women in this series are beautifully shown - either fully naked or in various levels of undress. Most of the nudity depicted is from the rear - so the derrieres on these girls are heavenly. Most of the most intimate physical contact is unseen - although the oral sex (given to both men and women) is a bit more telling.

I didn't like how the older women were always the villains, with the most sinister being a 70-year-old Whistler's Mother type characters- who gets it on just as much as the babe's a fraction of her age.

What's really nice about this series is the love making between the women - which is sometimes rough - but just as often quite tender with lengthy body-to-body contact and romantic full mouth kissing.

This series was published in 1994, so the content is actually much more recent than one would've guessed. Back then, these adult comic books were probably intended for men. But it's nice, years later, that we ladies can enjoy them just as much.

Elegant and delicate, without shying away from reality........2003-06-20

There is not one ounce of anger or aggressivity in this book, set in the middle of a civil war. As if the increasing conflict were mere clouds that will be pushed by the wind. Never does the author complain excessively, nor does he fail to point at difficulties, in small and big matters. One can wonder if he is not Lao himself, detached from our material world but still fully conscious he lives in it, without any anger nor apathy. Measuring the impact one has on the others.

This book is as interesting for the rendition of Laos in an extremely important time in its history, as it is interesting for a little lesson in life.

In Richard Nixon and the Quest for a New Majority, Robert Mason analyzes Nixon's response to the developing conservative climate and challenges revisionist claims about the activist nature of the Nixon administration. Nixon was an activist in intent, Mason contends, but not in deed.

Nixon's "silent majority" speech of 1969 not only undermined the growth of the antiwar movement, Mason shows, it also identified a constituency for Nixon to cultivate in order to secure reelection. However, the implementation of his new-majority project was hindered by the resort to dirty tricks against political opponents and the ineffectual pursuit of a policy agenda. Although some Nixon initiatives were enacted, says Mason, they were not substantial enough to rival the Democrats' bread-and-butter issues. Bragonier's memoir is more than a collection of game warden war stories. He addresses these wildlife issues of national importance: The future of the grizzly bear, the decline of ethical hunting, and the black market in wildlife trophies.

The author used his criminal investigative skills to develop a credible solution to the murder of two Wyoming game wardens just after the Second World War.

And there are plenty of chuckles here as well.

A Great Book about Wyoming Game Wardens.......2007-03-26

I first found this title after reading C.J. Box's mystery series about fictional Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett. This book is a game warden's memoirs recounted around a number of issues, like the Yellowstone fires of 1988, increasing human/grizzly interaction, and a variety of outdoor topics. I found the book to be quite entertaining and readbale and presented in easy to read, straightforward language. I would recommend this book to any hunters, outdoorsman, wildlife photographers, hikers, and those who love the American West.
