Book Description

Published in 1964, My Years with General Motors was an immediate best-seller and today is considered one of the few classic books on management. The book is the ghostwritten memoir of Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. (1875-1966), whose business and management strategies enabled General Motors to overtake Ford as the dominant American automobile manufacturer in the 1920s and 1930s.

What has been largely unknown until now is that My Years with General Motors was almost not published. Although it was written with the permission of General Motors -- and slated for publication in October 1959 -- at the last minute General Motors tried to suppress the book out of fears that some of the material in it could become evidence in an antitrust action against the company. This book, by John McDonald, Sloan's ghostwriter, tells the behind-the-scenes story of the book's writing, its attempted suppression, and the lawsuit that eventually led to its publication. McDonald's narrative is partly the David-and-Goliath story of a lone journalist taking on the world's then-largest corporation and partly a study of strategy in its own right. McDonald's struggle to publish the book led him to navigate a complicated course among the competing interests of General Motors, Fortune magazine (his employer), and Time, Inc. (Fortune's owner). In many ways this "book about the book" parallels the Sloan book as a tale of successful, brilliantly planned strategy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story tellers, great personalities..........2007-09-28

I am enjoying very much this book. I still didn't finish it. I will read it slowly, each time I am reading it I go back in time and I feel like an invisible person that seeing history unfold.

What makes me recommend this book? First is very well written, it has a great story and we get to know better a man like mr. Alfred Sloan. How he behaved in real life, his relationships, the impact of the loss of his wife... In this book we can have a short portrait of this man, it is possible to get an insight into the real person he was.

I also enjoyed the foreword by Dan Seligman, it is a great summary of the book and gives a great insight into the story and man behind the book, John McDonald.

5 out of 5 stars McDonald's Years of Struggle with General Motors.......2002-08-07

Until reading this book, I was wholly unaware of efforts by General Motors' lawyers to prevent the publication of Sloan's memoir My Years with General Motors which is generally considered one of the most important business books ever written. McDonald was Sloan's ghost writer (hence the dual meaning of the book's title) and provides a compelling account of how and why the book was finally published in 1963. McDonald suggests that a study in 1921 (discussed in Sloan's memoir) recommended "covering" all prospective buyers of automobiles by designing, manufacturing, and marketing a complete line for various "price steps." In that event, GM lawyers feared, federal regulatory agencies would become involved and seek to dismantle what could be perceived as a monopoly. In 1962, McDonald initiated a lawsuit against GM. He was at that time still employed by Fortune magazine. Almost immediately, Time Inc. "entered the game", fearing loss of GM advertising. It would be a disservice to both McDonald and to those who read this review to reveal what happened next. To my surprise, the book became a "page turner" and remained so to its conclusion. McDonald tells a lively story with colorful characters, a complicated plot, all manner of crises and conflicts, subtle (and not-so-subtle) manipulations, and conflicts of interests while -- along the way -- examining a legal system exploited but which ultimately prevailed. A great read.

On April 9, 1947, Commissioner Happy Chandler shocked the baseball world by suspending Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher for "conduct detrimental to baseball." The Dodgers' Branch Rickey signed Burt Shotton as an interim replacement. Shotton had enjoyed a solid if unspectacular playing and managerial career. Little in his background indicated the success he would have-that fall he led the Dodgers to the National League pennant, and in 1949 he did it again. His success has long been overshadowed by his losses in the World Series, causing many to forget his role in establishing the Dodgers' winning tradition in the mid-1940s and 1950s.

      Book Description

In the late 1980s, gangsta rap music emerged in urban America, giving voice to -- and making money for -- a social group widely considered to be in crisis: young, poor, black men. From its local origins, gangsta rap went on to flood the mainstream, generating enormous popularity and profits. Yet the highly charged lyrics, public battles, and hard, fast lifestyles that characterize the genre have incited the anger of many public figures and proponents of "family values." Constantly engaging questions of black identity and race relations, poverty and wealth, gangsta rap represents one of the most profound influences on pop culture in the last thirty years.

Focusing on the artists Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, the Geto Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur, Quinn explores the origins, development, and immense appeal of gangsta rap. Including detailed readings in urban geography, neoconservative politics, subcultural formations, black cultural debates, and music industry conditions, this book explains how and why this music genre emerged. In Nuthin'but a "G" Thang, Quinn argues that gangsta rap both reflected and reinforced the decline in black protest culture and the great rise in individualist and entrepreneurial thinking that took place in the U.S. after the 1970s. Uncovering gangsta rap's deep roots in black working-class expressive culture, she stresses the music's aesthetic pleasures and complexities that have often been ignored in critical accounts.

4 out of 5 stars Unintentionally Proves The Point.......2006-08-02

This encyclopaedic examination of "gangsta rap" culture states that the "movement" is a viable culture not only in the nation but within black society. I've been mistaken - I was convinced that the dumb spelling, childish slogans, ridiculous speech and obsession with obscenities was simply a marketing device. I now know that talking, writing and acting like semi-literate folks "normal". The author takes it further: It is to be admired and praised as simply another expression of black/street culture.

This "culture" reinforces every stereotype - uneducated, violent, obscene, criminal, lazy, irresponsible. The author asserts that gangsta rap genuinely describes the contemporary black experience for large numbers of folks. If so, the future is bleak indeed. We've all seen white & Latino kids trying to identify - rapping the words, dressing childishly, talking in that unintelligible shortcut speech accompanied by hilariously absurd hand gestures. Yet one knows it's an act. No one, especially black Americans, take them seriously. At any time they can re-enter modern society - lose the attitude, change to adult clothes adn speak normally. Those in the "gangsta" world may not have this option and that is sad. (The author would probably disagree.)

We get a tremendous amount of data supporting his thesis. Sadly, he may be correct. Gangsta rap dumbs down culture, offering a childish simplicity without complexity. Musicians cannot read, play or compose, entertainment is mindless, language is replaced with childish babble. "Western" values of education, thrift, hard work, morality, family and planning have been replaced by "street knowledge", living for the moment, criminal "heroes", gangs and an incredible ignorance of the modern world - from science to history to politics. It is a devestating indictment that is punctuated by the success of immigrants who adoped "Western" values and have flourished despite the many obstacles.

The question is not who can rap the baddest, has more street cred, sells more CDs, has better drugs or wears more bling. No, the question should be: Who will teach the children, heal the sick, fix the lights, repair the roads, deliver the mail, run the internet or produce BET? These basic societal functions are, of course, the ones that require so-called "Western" values. If we all lived the way the "heroes" do, where would we be then? No one in their right mind would choose this lifestyle for their child or family - it's a cultural death wish. This is an uneasy book, one that disturbs and leaves one depressed for the future.

1 out of 5 stars I am reminded of a certain infamous quote..........2006-03-01

After perusing this book at the local library, with its sympathetic eye to the prolifetation and glorification of hip-hop as a viable "culture", I can't help but think of something Hermann Goering once said: "Whenever I hear the word 'culture', I reach for my revolver". Decadent, apologetic propoganda in its worst form, disguised as credible academics, truly pathetic.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting interdisciplinary study.......2005-10-15

The author explores the genesis and maturation of Los Angeles-based gangsta music and culture during the post-Civil Rights era. She ties the genesis of gangsta to the time when the U.S. manufacturing economy shifted to a service based economy, urban areas were neglected and the neoconservative policies of the Reagan/Bush era redistributed the nation's wealth to a small group at the top. Theoretically this wealth would then "trickle down" and I suppose it did, though in the form of low paying, dead end service jobs for those who used to be skilled and semiskilled laborers. Her study ends in 1996, where the centrist policies of the Clinton administration did little to ameliorate the problems of which gangstas rap, and classic gangsta artists are mellowing. (And not coincidentally, the year Tupac Shakur, a child of Black Power parents, died in a drive-by shooting.)

The generation of young black men coming of age in places like Compton during this time saw only social immobility in the Land of Opportunity, so they created their own opportunities on their own terms. The irony, as she points out, is that gangsta is both a commentary on and child of the rampant free-market 1980's and `90s: ruthless, exploitative, unabashedly commercial, individualistic, hustling. (So is it really any surprise that here in the 21st century, Lee Iacocca gets jiggy with Snoop Dog for Chrysler commercials?)

This is an interesting interdisciplinary study of gangsta's texts and contexts, its academic commentators and its diverse opponents. While neither defending nor dismissing gangsta as the latest incarnation of the minstrel show stereotypes (like Stanley Crouch and others ) she demonstrates that it is rife with black archetypes which participate in some very old expressive repertoires. And she looks forward beyond 1996 by mentioning "Barbershop" in which Ice Cube's character has learned the value of community and non-materialism.

Those unfamiliar with the jargon of cultural studies might find themselves confused on occasion (I admit I did) but will also find that things clarify themselves with further reading. I recommend this for anyone interested in African American music and cultural studies.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Overview for Professionals & Nice Reference for End Users .......2007-07-20

What the heck is Sharepoint? We bought this book to help us find out. I've liked many of the SAMS 24-hour and 21-day books, but this is the first 10-minute SAMS that I enjoyed. This book has a 2005 copyright and addresses Sharepoint 2003, the release prceding the current Sharepoint 2007. Since the book is an introduction, it serves well even if you envision a Sharepoint 2007 environment.

As we reengineered our IT resources at our small technology company to run on Microsoft Small Business Server, we almost discarded the built-in Sharepoint-based CompanyWeb intranet. Just in time, we (I and one other experienced administrator/developer) took a closer look by rapidly exploring CompanyWeb using the twenty-five, ten-minute lessons in this book. Wow, we realized we could do so much with Sharepoint to improve our intranet. We quickly invested in four thicker Sharepoint books, but this is the book we will give to end users who are looking for something beyond read-only access to the documents and lists.

We learned that Sharepoint quite simply is a Microsoft server technology with an impressive set of tools for creating, viewing, and editing intranets. (Call them "portals" if they are comprehensive and well designed.) Sharepoint works just fine too for public web sites but so far has been promoted by Microsoft largely as a way to share Office 2003 and Office 2007 documents.

Use of Sharepoint encourages and almost ensures best practices for not just sharing but also collaborating on documents, lists (including contacts), discussions, surveys, links, and many more intranet elements. A wide variety of templates are available from Microsoft and others. Each of these intranet elements is a Sharepoint Web Part. Web Parts are enhanced ASP.Net pages with integrated assemblies of controls. The assemblies have properties and methods that permit easy runtime modification of content, format, and views by end users - in almost the same manner as end users can edit, format, and view Word or Excel documents. Most Sharepoint documents and other items can be automatically maintained in SQL Server databases (with version control and checkout if you need them) so you can say goodbye to huge assortments of poorly organized folders that are typically found in intranets, and this improvement in content management greatly eases an intranet administrator's burden.

Of course developers can build their own web parts using the sophistication of Visual Studio and all the power of the .NET Framework.

5 out of 5 stars The quick 10 min reference.......2007-01-10

This little book is big on reference. It will not give you the most comprehensive detail that a full tech manual would give you but, it is after all a 10 min. guide. The quick references and how-to's get you up and running on using Sharepoint 2003. It is an easy read for all that would deal with Sharepoint. The instructions are easy to follow and not written in a high techie vocabulary so it can even be used in training users in the use of sharepoint with office.

4 out of 5 stars Useful SharePoint reference material.......2007-01-09

Have found the book useful in researching specific issues/procedures for my novice to intermediate use of SharePoint. Our company's internal training program recommended this book and I have found our utilization of the product is a close match to the material in the book which is a great bonus!

            Book Description

Adrift in Tokyo, translating obscene rap lyrics for giggling Japanese high school girls,, "thirtynothing" Robert Twigger comes to a revelation about himself: He has never been fit nor brave. Guided by his roommates, Fat Frank and Chris, he sets out to cleanse his body and mind. Not knowing his fist from his elbow, the author is drawn into the world of Japanese martial arts, joining the Tokyo Riot Police on their yearlong, brutally demanding course of budo training, where any ascetic motivation soon comes up against bloodstained "white pyjamas" and fractured collarbones. In Angry White Pyjamas, Twigger blends, the ancient with the modern--the ultratraditionalism, ritual, and violence of the dojo (training academy) with the shopping malls, nightclubs, and scenes of everyday Tokyo life in the 1990s--to provide a brilliant, bizarre glimpse of life in contemporary Japan.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2007-03-28

This book is hands down the best autobiographical material available on training in Asian martial arts. I love martial arts as both practice and history. I train in shotokan karate and am widely read in a variety of martial arts and in general Japanese history. I believe in honoring hierarchy and preserving tradition. But the, frankly, willful ignorance of the critical reviews here I have no respect for. Twigger's book is not only outstanding as literature, it is exceptionally non-judgemental. People who confuse personal observations and opinions as some kind of objective slander have simply fallen into the cult-like group-think displayed by so many western practitioners of Asian martial arts. It's pathetic, really.

I guarantee you that if you are desperate for a work that combines real martial arts with real literature, this is the best and perhaps only book available to you.

This book gives me inspiration to continue practicing Aikido.
The one of the best line in the book that I have read is:
"The Japanese were more light hearted. For them aikido was a lifetime occupation; if you were too intense you wouldn't last it out".
Aikido is a different martial arts. You think you knew something then suddenly you will realize that you haven't learn that much.
And you still suck at it.
Every time that this happens, I grab this book and just re-read it again.
I have already read the book at least 5 times. And every time
it gives me an energy to continue practicing this art of PEACE.

3 out of 5 stars Not always so accurate.......2006-09-25

I've lived in Japan for 4 years now and sprained my knee in the dojo Robert writes about...if that's some badge of expertise. He gets a lot right in this book ... and maybe that's the problem. Just like the movie "Lost in Translation", he shares his unique views of a complicated nation. At one point, he even seems to admit the difficulty outsiders have when looking at Japan. Yet, that didn't seem to slow up his stereotyping.

He denounces Japanese food, an amusing thing from a Brit. I've seen little evidence of English competency in cooking, yet the world seems enamoured with Japanese food.

He knows two SGI folks in in his apartment complex - that relegates a very high-profile, worldwide organization (one with obvious flaws and great assets)to cult status. He never seems to get to the point of Yoshinkan Aikido - or did I miss it in his negativity. Yoshikan teaches the basics of Aikido better than anyone else. Whether you stay with them or not, you can learn so much from these folks.

After reading the book, I'm lost at why someone with so much disdain for Japan was here. If Robert had lived in better circumstances, I'm sure his views of Japan would have been more positive. But, if Japan was half as screwed up as he claims, why be here?

Again, there is merit in the book. Anyone considering practicing martial arts in Japan should read it first. Just remember - it's not a bible but an opinion. And, lesson number two, try to have another way to get by other than teaching English.

            1 out of 5 stars A matter of betrayal.......2006-09-13

Mr Twigger writes an entertaining book BUT ... after reading the book, I would think twice about letting my kids train in a Japanese martial art if I am a parent. I may not have hooked up with Yoshinkan aikido had I read the book first.

I think the book betrayed trust - irrespective of the author's experience, Yoshinkan put in a lot of effort to train him as a future instructor/ambassador for Yoshinkan and the organisation invested a lot of effort to build and have a relationship with him ... the Japanese budo way. This trust/relationship was broken by a self serving writer who got a lot of mileage from his time with Yoshinkan under false pretence. I think the book really hurt a lot of the good instructors at Yoshinkan. Having trained at the Yoshinkan training hall in Tokyo, I feel rather outraged at the author's work - it contained enough facts so that the rest of the book seemed credible.

Then there is the matter of his relationships with those who trained with him on the course and people he lived with. Mr Twigger betrayed them too.

4 out of 5 stars An Aikido Odessey!.......2006-07-05

Robert Twigger's book, Angry white pajamas, takes a close look at his time in Japan attending the intense one year Aikido course given by the IYAF (International Yoshinkan Aikido Federation). Even though the course is supposed to be for the benefit of the Tokyo Riot Police, they usually accept a few foreigners every year to take part and spread the art.

From the get go you'll notice that is more a memoir than anything else. Mr. Twigger's writing goes from being a puny english teacher in a strange land, to a tough accomplished martial artist who knows about pain and patience.

All in all a very funny, insightful read. I would recommend this to anybody interested in travel or the martial arts. I would in particular recommend this to anybody practicing Aikido, (I do Yoshinkan as well) because of the books focus on his training.

As far as world civilization textbooks go, this one proves to be the most useful. The book spans from Paleolithic icemen to the industrialized peoples of the 20th century all around the world. Included are timelines within each chapter summarizing major events for the chapter. They are short and to the point. Lovely and helpful pictures appear on every page. As a person reads through this book, the begin to be able to make connections between social, cultural, political, and economic ideas in each civilization and then follows up on how each civilization develops throughout time. It is an excellent textbook for people who want to start studing world history.

                      Book Description

The twentieth century witnessed an unprecedented growth of research and publication on the history of Britain's empire, the Commonwealth, and British expansion overseas. Historical work by area specialists has transformed the state of knowledge concerning colonial North America, India, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, South and South-East Asia, the Pacific, and Australasia. Much has been written about Britain's interests and presence in areas and societies never formally subjected to British rule, such as Latin America, and the Middle and Far East. Most recently, a preoccupation with the reciprocal impact of overseas expansion and colonial possessions on Britain itself has produced a rapidly growing historiography. Publication on this scale has made it virtually impossible for anyone either to keep track of the results or to follow up particular interests. Britain's overseas history has never been well supplied with comprehensive bibliographical aids, and, despite extensive public interest in the subject, the position has steadily worsened. Following the recent Oxford History of the British Empire, this volume is therefore designed to provide a general source of reference and bibliographical guidance, at once wide-ranging, up-to-date, and accessible.

                            Book Description

This book follows the social, economic and demographic transformations of the Alpine area from the late Middle Ages. Its aim is to reassess the image of the upland community which emerges from the work of historians, geographers and social anthropologists. The book therefore deals at length with such problems as the causes and consequences of emigration and patterns of marriage and inheritance in favouring or hampering the adjustments of local populations to changing economic or ecological circumstances, and tackles the vexed question of the relative importance of cultural and environmental factors in shaping family forms and community structures. Although its foundation lies in a long period of anthropological fieldwork conducted in an Alpine community, Upland Communities relies on the methods and conceptual tools of historical demography. Combined with a long-term historical perspective, its broad comparative approach unveils an unexpected diversity in regional and spatial demographic patterns and questions a number of deep-rooted but ultimately misleading notions concerning mountain society and its alleged backwardness in the past.

This is one of my all time favorite books--even though much of it I had to read and re-read several times to get a clear understanding of some of the points it makes. I believe everyone should read this...several times---it has some truly fascinating information in it and is an excelent book to really get you thinking and appreciating the nature of this planet we live on!

If somebody have some interest in water must read that book.
It give great insights of how we should consider water and how to use it.Schauberger is the pioneer on what really water is,and with all of other things i read on that subject i think this is the one to start with. Many research today lead to the way Schauberger saw water many years ago.It prove too that you don't need to be a scientist to understand water.Great reading.

Living Energies gives the understandings necessary for revitalizing Planet Earth -- for understanding which human actions either enhance or destroy the vitality of our forests, soils, air and water. I tell people about Living Energies more often than I promote my own books! Living Energies is the best book in the world for understanding the extensive wisdom of the Austrian forester and genius Viktor Schauberger. Academics, politicians and many other decision-makers should all study this book, if they can set aside any prejudices they might have regarding some inclusions of spirituality in a science book. It's the big picture!

I have every book written by Callum Coats on the Schauberger subject. This book, if you only buy one of them, is the definative book to get. I would basically call it a complet Schauberger reference work, as it contains all of the material that will later be expanded in the "Eco-Technology" series - which contain more thorough descriptions of Viktor's work. This book is great on its own, however, and will not dissapoint anyone interested in learning more about the "water wizard" - Viktor Schauberger. I highly recommend this book as a great starting point for study on everything from understanding the vortex, implosion technology, water-power in general, Schauberger's inventions, his forestry upbringing, and as a general biography, this book can't be beat.

(First I should say that my copy of this book, by the same publisher, has a different sub-title than the one listed. Also, it's my understanding that this publisher (Gateways) was bought out, and I very much suspect that the book now in print by New leaf is more-or-less exactly the same as this one. Buy it!!)
Viktor Schauberger came from a long line of Austrian foresters, whose family motto was Fidus in Silvus Silentibus: "Faith in the Silent Forests." It's almost as if the trees & rivers were in his blood. His profound power of observation permitted him to see what others overlooked, and to draw conclusions that were both practical and utterly unique. He eschewed a university education because he knew it would deaden his mind, and he had learned enough in school already to find deep disagreement with a number of sacrosanct theories. He is probably best known (for those few who know of him) for his profound observations of water as a living being - most particulary the natural vortical inner motion of rivers, and their need to meander and maintain low temperatures, and the natural formation of springs. He also deeply understood the nature and needs of trees - which, in essence, create water, and have a tremendous effect on weather systems.
Because Viktor's observations, discoveries and inventions were so unique, and outside the strictures of establishment science, he had to create his own terminology. In this sense he was very much like the old alchemists, who had to coin new words for their discoveries. And too, Viktor's view of the elements was unlike any other. For example, with the exception of oxygen and hydrogen, he termed all the other elements "carbones." In fact his whole vision, with all of its extraordinary explication, is alchemical - not the least because it includes Spirit. It deals with natural transformations and energies: his dictum was "Comprehend and copy nature!"
Probably his greatest gift to us was his recognition of implosion, rather than explosion, as the natural, harmless means of releasing/creating energy, and he did much work in this area.
Not suprisingly he was much maligned by the powerful status quo. His life was fraught with treachery and great adversity.
Read this book and learn about a truly great man. You'll find it very exciting.

Here is a valuable one-semester course text for non-science majors that delivers! It is concise, focused on material that will enable students to make intelligent choices about the future of the earth, and written in a style that will enable students to make connections to their own lives. Students want to know how science relates to their lives, how the biosphere works, what is wrong with it, and what they can do to make a difference. Now there is a new text that provides the information students need and gives real-life examples that make the learning process more interesting and relevant. THREE MAIN DIVISIONS OF TEXT 1. What science is and what students need to know about it 2. The biosphere, how it works, and its current problems 3. What students can do about the problems ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Sharon La Bonde Hanks teaches biology at William Paterson College in New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Her 33 years in teaching have concentrated on biology and environmental science, with research focused on ecology, taxonomy and systematic palynology. She has a special interest in writing about the discipline, assessment and race/gender issues in science. Hanks is the author of a major text on how to teach biology using the process approach. In addition, she runs workshops and is a consultant, an expert perennial gardener and naturalized landscaper, and an avid student of Tai Chi. She is most proud of her memberships in the New Jersey Audubon Weis Ecology Center, Habitat for Humanity, and the Nature Conservancy.
