Book Description

A Passion for Winning tells the story of Aaron Cushman as he lived the "American Dream" - from his days as a struggling World War II veteran to his establishment and leadership of the 25th largest public relations firm in the U.S., which successfully served an impressive array of clients, including Keebler Cookie Co., Serta Mattress Co., Marriott, Century 21 and more. Along the way, Cushman helped to promote a host of celebrities in motion pictures, television and nightclub entertainment, including the Three Stooges, Jane Russell, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, among others. He also spent over a decade as co-owner and PR director for the Chicago White Sox under Bill Veeck's glory days, and later produced twelve World Championship Tennis tournaments.

"Whether it's sports, show business or Fortune 500 corporations, Cushman knows how to make news. His book is filled with terrific anecdotes about famous people and familiar products," said Irv Kupcinet, the late columnist of the Chicago Sun-Times. In this behind-the-scenes story of his fifty-year career, Cushman reveals his secret to success and how one remarkable man's creativity and integrity helped shape the PR profession.

    Book Description

Chalkstream Chronicle is a brilliant, memorable account of a man who gave up a sixty-hour work week in London for a life within earshot of a great trout river.

Neil Patterson's decision to convert a dilapidated old stable into a true home for himself and his family, and his ability thereby to fish the river intimately, month by month, hatch by hatch, in fair weather and foul, form the heart of this remarkable memoir.

His angling idyll records the realities and the rewards of his choice: life in a damp, half-built house that first winter, and the rare chance to know a great chalkstream and the characters who fish it with great intimacy. His restless, inventive mind leads him to observe the life of the river frequently missed by occasional visitors.

He even develops a host of highly original fly patterns - like the Funneldun, the Caddox and the Deerstalker, now known internationally - and perfects fly-fishing techniques and theories of immense value to fishermen world wide.

No serious fly fisherman will want to miss this engaging, practical and penetrating memoir.

    Book Description

The literary mind and the boob tube are often thought to have little in common, but the two have been trysting in dimly lit rooms since television’s earliest days. To prove the point, Doug Bauer asked a number of the finest writers of our time to reveal their own forays into a medium that has been called everything from a vast wasteland to the electronic dream machine of the global village. The results are surprising, passionate, very personal, and often downright hilarious. From Nora Ephron on The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Nick Hornby on The West Wing, Susan Cheever on Father Knows Best to Henry Louis Gates Jr. on Amos ’n’ Andy, the full range of televised fare is captured—sitcoms and soaps, police dramas and reality TV, the very new and the very old, and the much criticized and denounced and the truly iconic and beloved.

Prime Times is an eclectic gathering of autobiography, memory, and blade-sharp observation, all bound by the common—and, after all, literary—experience of watching other people’s lives while trying to understand one’s own.

A 2007 summer reading list mini review.

Every summer my family turns our TV off and keeps it off until September. This gives us more opportunities to bond as a family. We go for walks, we go to ballgames. We go fishing, swimming, play tennis and we read lots of books. Usually, I am in the right spirit for this annual event, but I took to it slowly this year. Which is why I was online the 2nd evening ordering TV programs on DVD from our library to arrive at the beginning of September. While surfing for volumes, I came across this book and placed a hold on it.

When it arrived, the introductory story of the painter who went on a retreat to paint nature and ended up painting TV sets struck a chord with me. This was because it was exactly what I did. Instead of watching television, I was reading television. I quickly got into this amazing book. I was especially struck on how much I enjoyed the essays praising programs I don't especially care for. Reminiscences about television seem to be steeped in biography rather than criticism. I especially was moved by Lan Samantha Chang's finding solace in Gilligan's Island in light of her parents being real life castaways from mainland China.

I wonder if the TV guide will count for summer reading.

1 out of 5 stars A fun idea, but nothing more .......2004-08-26

Writers who are insightful and entertaining elsewhere, like Virginia Heffernan and Nick Hornsby, are dull and pointless here. Susan Cheever gives us yet another picture of her famous father as a stuffy suburban drunk. Nora Ephron likes Mary Tyler Moore because it made her feel better about being a single woman. So what? "Why did you like Gilligan's Island" is not an inherently interesting question- quite the opposite. It would take real talent to make something nourishing out of these bones. And, although the resumes of these writers indicated that the necessary talent had been assembled, the product demonstrated otherwise

5 out of 5 stars Book This, Dan-O........2004-08-25

Twenty-three writers write about their favorite TV shows or shows that stick in their minds for some reason. Nick Hornby, a British writer, writes about West Wing, a show about a fictional president, but can't imagine Americans enjoying an English show about a fictional prime minister. I guess he'd be surprised at the much-viewed collection of Yes, Prime Minister videos at our house.

Alan Lightman remembers three episodes of Twilight Zone that scared him, his brothers, and the housekeeper silly. After forty years he gets details of the shows wrong (the Chinese restaurant was really a diner, and the plastic surgery patient was a woman rather than a man, as he remembers), but it doesn't matter. The time and the memories are important, not the TV show.

Mark Leyner writes an unlikely, but funny essay about a South Korean academic he encounters who suspects that everything that has happened in the world since 1968 is a figment of Steve McGarrett's imagination.

As a former teen who loved Big Valley, I enjoyed reading Jayne Anne Phillips's memories of the strong character played by Barbara Stanwyck and that hunky Heath and the handsome, but apparently celibate older brother (played by Richard Long) who lived part time in San Francisco. "Hm," Phillips muses.

MST3K, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Davey and Goliath, Secret Agent (formerly Danger Man), The Dick Van Dyke Show, Star Trek, even Survivor all get analyzed, remembered, and misremembered.

An especially original essay has Lan Samantha Chang watching Gilligan's Island shortly after her family has immigrated to Wisconsin from China. She remembers identifying with the castaways and decades later when she sees the show again, understands the show on a completely different level.

Great for browsing and skimming, Prime Times is a lot of fun. Also recommended is Gilligan Unbound, an unexpected analysis of Gilligan's Island, the Simpsons, Star Trek, and The X-Files by a professor who watches TV without shutting down his brain.

    Book Description

This book is an examination of how American advertising both mirrors society and creates it. From the first newspaper advertisement in colonial times to the latest Web sites for advertising agencies, Soap, Sex and Cigarettes explores how advertising grew in America, how products and brands were produced and promoted, and how advertisements and agencies reflect and introduce cultural trends and issues. The threads of art, industry, culture, and technology unify the work. The text is chronological in its organization and is lavishly illustrated with advertisements.

1 out of 5 stars Neither History nor Cultural History.......2002-07-26

The Sivulkas' work is a rather long narrative of American advertising -- with very little to offer beyond reproductions of some rather commonplace ads from the last two hundred years. Much of the information they offer seems to come from other sources, and there is no real bibliography to the book. It is most misleadingly titled "cultural history" since there is so very little to the book beyond a chronology, and that is full of mistakes, over-simplifications, and such bland statements that there is nothing to be learned from this book. Others have written much better and more meaningful things about the history of advertising, and charged less than [$$] for it.

4 out of 5 stars Look at yourself.......2002-03-23

If you want to understand American culture you can see how advertising has taken what is already in the culture and made it an industry to sell dreams...and of course the products these dreams represent.

As someone who teaches advertising concepts I found this book a very good intro to understanding advertising and having students see how it is not separate from the culture.

Written in a very readable style, I recco the book to anyone teaching advertising to creatives or to anyone interested in American culture.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference, name is a bit of a misnomer, though..........2001-06-22

Advertising has been around since the dawn of civilization. The ancient Greeks created signs for their theatres and any open-air market of any ancient culture shows evidence of signage advertising different wares. With the invention of the printing press and movable type, however, the age of information and advertising truly began.

The history of American advertising is as packed with dates, places, people and events as any other slice of American history, and in "Soap, Sex and Cigarettes" Juliann Sivulka has done an exhaustive job of outlining these very things. With chapters going from 1492-1800, beginning with the colonization of the States, through the Roaring 20's and ending with "1990s and Beyond: The Media Revolution", this book should be required reading for any marketing/advertising undergrad. Indeed, considering the density of the material-- as thorough as any text on the Revolutionary War-- I imagine it IS required collegiate reading for students entering these professions.

The book is packed with various illustrations of real ads from the time periods, and one could easily get an overview of American advertising by simply leafing through the pages and looking at the ads and how they evolve from a 1608 London woodcut pamphlet advertising the New World ("Excellent fruites by Planting in Virginia") to the modern "Just Do It" and "Got Milk?" high glossy ad campaigns. The text is ordered and well written and can be read both as collegiate material and as casual reading (though there are a LOT of dates, places, times and events for the casual reader). The author frequently includes common ad slogans throughout the book that have become staples of American advertising: "His masters voice", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", "Remember: only YOU can prevent forest fires" and "melts in your mouth, not in your hand" to name just a VERY few. There are also brief timelines of some of the highlights of product inventions that advertising impacted, such as Twinkies introduction in 1930 (originally filled with banana creme), pet rocks in 1975 and the new age of advertising begun in 1989 by Nissan's Infiniti where the actual product was never shown.

The book is subtitled "A Cultural History of American Advertising", but it is here where it falls short. It's an excellent resource for the history of advertising, but it's not so great at demonstrating how advertising has influenced our society. There are short parts demonstrating the stereotype of people of color and women, for example African-American people portrayed as grinning Sambos who are thrilled to ecstasy that Gold Dust washing powder makes your pots n' pans sparkle; Asian people with long pigtails and coolie hats in outlandish dress; women typically in household roles advertising everything from soap to washing machines (while trying to appear sexy at the same time: "You'd think I'm a flapper, but I CAN keep house"-- S.O.S. Pads, 1927). However, this aspect is not nearly as well fleshed-out as I would have expected from the title. I was expecting something more along the lines of cultural anthropology or Noam Chomsky-- explaining how advertising not only reflected society but INFLUENCED it-- and found little to be had.

No one would argue the fact that sex and celebrity status are constantly being used to sell everything from cars to toothpaste, and the unspoken meaning of most ads is something like "Drink Figgy-Fiz Cola and you'll have to beat the beautiful babes away with a lug wrench!" Most people ignore advertisements or complain about them and generally pay little or no attention to them at all. Still, the amount of advertising is only INCREASING as time goes on and the ads do influence our culture substantially. Should you doubt me, ask yourself why were children murdering other children for Nike shoes during the late 80's? No one was attacking me for my black Keds, and God help you if you wore Buster Browns after the age of 4. Why? Because the ads told us there were certain products to value above others (and therefore we could justify paying 120% more for those products as well) and we believed them. THIS sort of "cultural history" and analysis was missing from this book, which is a shame because Ms. Sivulka could have shed quite a lot of light onto this still-dark corner of our society. Perhaps she didn't because the more we know about advertising and how it works, the less power it holds over us.

In closing, "Soap, Sex and Cigarettes" is a great resource both for the professional marketer/advertiser and a fascinating read for the casual thinker of pop/modern culture. It's a bit expensive (though college texts always are), but it's exhaustively researched and very well written. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Average Reference Book.......2001-02-02

While this book has quite a bit of useful history, it is not meant to be read cover to cover. It works in a very straightforward format providing a mostly chronological laundry list of advertisers and advertising agencies. The book lacks an in-depth analysis of the relationship between advertising and American culture as its subtitle seems to suggest. The sections on minority and web-based advertising are woefully out of date and simplistic. However, the book has some great ad illustrations and there are several supplementary list which are quite interesting. Basically, it's a decent reference book, but not for anyone looking for an interesting take on the history of American advertising.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the classroom!.......1998-01-12

When I ordered this book, I thought it might be just another text book, however, Ms. Sivulka is a skillful writer worth reading at any level. Her subject matter is interesting, obviously carefully selected and well-coordinated. The illustrations are entertaining and pertinent. It's a fun read with lots of know-how apparent.

In this book, two experts from the University of Michigan Business School lay out a five-stage process that links all of the key measures of customer satisfaction with marketing strategy and product development to guarantee excellent customer service. Johnson and Gustafsson show managers how to break down the organizational barriers that defy great customer service and instead tie together their customer value chain to create a cohesive customer measurement and management system. So, if like most companies, yours has only a fleeting understanding of its relationship with its customers, this book offers the organizational know-how to make and keep them happy.

This book focuses on linking customers' needs with a company's processes to create the best customer experience possible. The book outlines a five-stage process to create this link and thereby improves customer satisfaction, loyalty and profit.

Stage 1: Identify the system's purpose and goals. Create a customer measurement and management system to analyze and understand the company's entire system for generating profit.
Stage 2: Utilizing qualitative research, a model of customer views of products and services offered customer satisfaction, and loyalty and retention. This stage shifts the focus from the company's perspective to the customer's perspective.
Stage 3: Design a customer survey using the lens of the customer created in Stage 2 to measure loyalty, quality, and satisfaction. Various survey formats are presented.
Stage 4: The survey results are analyzed utilizing advanced statistical methods to figure out what can be done to improve customer satisfaction and to assess the impact actions will have on revenue.
Stage 5: Based on the impact actions will have on the bottom line, priorities will be set to improve quality. This system will make a direct link between quality, loyalty, satisfaction, and profit. The system allows for the user to continually review and assess quality.

5 out of 5 stars The Subtitle Says It All...The Book Explains It All.......2001-04-21

This is one of several excellent volumes in the University of Michigan Business School Management Series in which the authors provide a cohesive, comprehensive, cost-effective customer measurement and management system which consists of five separate but related stages. Specifically, they explain:

? How to identify the system?s purpose and goals, deciding which customers to include and how to group them into natural segments that reflect their interests and purchasing patterns

? How to use qualitative research to build the ?lens of the customer?, a model of customer views of the products and services that you provide, customer satisfaction, and the loyalty and retention that result

? How to use the lens of the customer to build a customer survey to measure quality, satisfaction, and loyalty

? How to use the lens again in analyzing data from the customer survey, both to determine what could be done to improve customer satisfaction and to assess the probable effect of each potential improvement on bottom-line financial performance

? How to set priorities for quality improvement, using the information developed from the survey as background for business decisions, and then implement the decisions according to the priorities set by management

Whew! That?s a lot! Fortunately, Johnson and Gustafsson devote a separate chapter to each of the five stages of the process.. They also provide three valuable appendices: A mini-case study of the Ratorp Tire Company, the NACS Customer Satisfaction Survey, and a Data Analysis in Practice. If your organization needs to improve customer satisfaction, loyalty, and profit, here is an excellent source.

5 out of 5 stars A hands on book that you can put to action.......2000-09-15

This is a great book for people who have always wanted to be actionable in analyzing customer satisfaction and loyalty data to make strategic decisions. The book provides concrete examples with real data to step you through in building satisfaction models that lead to bottom line performance. It is extremely well written for a broad range of audience from the novist to the experts. This book not only provides you with the necessary tools to run models but also explains in an easy to understand manner the underlying reasons and background as to how customer satisfaction and loyalty models should be approached. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to have the ability to actually run customer satisfaction models and make intelligent interpretation and executive decisions.

      Product Description

In the early 1950s, Rosa Parks-who was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, and worked as a seamstress most of her life- became active in the American Civil Rights Movement and worked as a secretary for the Montgomery branch of the NAACP. She also attended the Highlander Folk School, an education center for workers' rights and racial equality. On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Parks refused to obey a public bus driver's orders to give up her seat in the "colored" section of the bus to a white man. She was arrested, tried, and convicted for disorderly conduct. Partially in response to her arrest, Martin Luther King, Jr., then a relatively unknown Baptist minister, led the yearlong Montgomery bus boycott, which forced the public transportation authority to end the practice of racial segregation on public buses. This event helped spark many other protests against segregation. Meanwhile, in 1956, Parks's case ultimately resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that segregated bus service was unconstitutional. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks' brave act of civil disobedience. The Montgomery Advertiser presents a tribute to Ms. Parks and the impact her stand against inequality had on civil rights, illustrated with rich stories and stunning photos from the archives of the Advertiser.

4 out of 5 stars On the 50th anniversary of civil disobedience..........2006-03-16

In the early 1950s Rosa Parks became active in civil rights, and Martin Luther King Jr. fostered the yearlong Montgomery bus boycott which forced the end of segregation not just in transit but in the country in general. THEY WALKED TO FREEDOM; THE STORY OF THE MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT, 1955-56 tells of these efforts in this, the 50th anniversary of Parks' act of civil disobedience. Paired with stunning vintage archival photos from the Montgomery Advertiser and authored by the editor of the Advertiser's editorial page, THEY WALKED TO FREEDOM is truly a fitting tribute.

      Book Description

No disease the world has ever known even remotely resembles the great influenza epidemic of 1918. Presumed to have begun when sick farm animals infected soldiers in Kansas, spreading and mutating into a lethal strain as troops carried it to Europe, it exploded across the world with unequaled ferocity and speed. It killed more people in twenty weeks than AIDS has killed in twenty years; it killed more people in a year than the plagues of the Middle Ages killed in a century. Victims bled from the ears and nose, turned blue from lack of oxygen, suffered aches that felt like bones being broken, and died. In the United States, where bodies were stacked without coffins on trucks, nearly seven times as many people died of influenza as in the First World War.

In his powerful new book, award-winning historian John M. Barry unfolds a tale that is magisterial in its breadth and in the depth of its research, and spellbinding as he weaves multiple narrative strands together. In this first great collision between science and epidemic disease, even as society approached collapse, a handful of heroic researchers stepped forward, risking their lives to confront this strange disease. Titans like William Welch at the newly formed Johns Hopkins Medical School and colleagues at Rockefeller University and others from around the country revolutionized American science and public health, and their work in this crisis led to crucial discoveries that we are still using and learning from today.

The Washington PostÂ's Jonathan Yardley said BarryÂ's last book can “change the way we think.” The Great Influenza may also change the way we see the world.

5 out of 5 stars The real version of "The Stand" by Stephen King.......2007-09-11

I really enjoyed this book as it showed in real life how fast a flu epidemic can spread. One has to realize that this epidemic took place in basically horse and buggy days, people did not travel as much. If you look into your family history, as I did, you may find a relative who died during this time period. After I read this book I discovered a graveyard for a turn of the century orphanage. There were so many children that died, all they could do is put numbers on the gravestones. It made me think how fast a flu epidemic could travel today. The references and facts were an eye opener.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Very Important Read.......2007-08-31

This book will definitely really make you reconsider the vulnerability of society to an epidemic. What really surprised me was how this single epidemic really kick-started the modern health care system. I had no idea that 100 years ago, it was easier to get certified to be a doctor than it was to go to college - quite literally one could go through a correspondence course. It also traces the development and speaks to the foundation of institutions who, our time, are revered for their stature in modern medicine, such as John Hopkins. It covers a great many aspects of medicine and epidemiology. What this book does best, and is truly refreshing for a history book, is provide insight into the thinking of the time - what role politics and political decisions made in the outbreaks in certain cities. What is truly horrifying is how really vulnerable populations are to influenza. Although we understand it better, actual treatment is still quite limited (prevention seems to be the best hope). A small mutation in the virus could again hammer populations around the world. I took on this book because my grandfather's family was so badly devastated by it. I never really asked enough about it before he passed away and now I wish I had. I recommend this book to anyone interested in epidemiology, medicine, particularly how medicine has advanced in the last 100 years, particularly in the US, or if, like me, your family history may have been effected by this. The most frightening aspect is the astounding speed with which this virus spread and the corresponding mortality rate that it brought with it. Tie that in with its extreme, and I mean extreme contagiousness and one finds a really frightening scenario. I can't imagine a world where people are dying so fast they can't even bury the bodies, doctors and nurses are afflicted so badly that they die almost as fast as the patients, that almost nobody really understands how the contagion is spread and people shun one another - neighbors, even family members. What is even more frightening is that this happened less than one hundred years ago. It really makes you think. It really makes you consider how truly vulnerable we all are.

      4 out of 5 stars a true horror story.......2007-08-17

First, with all the fearmongering about pandemics in the last couple of years, it is nice to read about the most deadly epidemic the world has ever known. It's not real comforting, but it is better than the fear Fox News was pandering at Rita/Katrina and the bird flu. It's a great book, one that should have been written, though it could have used a better editor. The book does jump around and there is a lot that probably could have been cut, but it is a great book dealing with a complex subject.

4 out of 5 stars Frightening and informative.......2007-08-13

A facinating window into a horrifying period that we've almost intentionally downplayed in our histories. It's especially worthwhile given the recent concerns about an inevitable pandemic. We are better equipped in some ways to deal with a worldwide pandemic, but in many others we are even more fragile. Viruses, like trade, move much more quickly now.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-08-01

I learned a vast amount about disease, the medical system, and medecine in general. One of the best and most informative books I have ever read. Well-researched and easy to read.

I purchased this, along with Lineburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam when I took my PE Exam. I cracked it open a few times while studying and once during the exam. I didn't find what I was looking for and I almost NEVER use it during my work. I am in the process field, pumps, pipe, etc. I use Lindeburg's manual at least twice a week. Skip this book and buy something more specific to your specialty. It's far to generic to be useful to me.

IT seems this book is a CD for use of a Wireless Area Network (WAN), so how can it possibly be hardcover? And why is is three times more expensive than the normal edition, but still looks like it is the same 10th edition material on CD ONLY?

"Mark's Handbook" is one of those books you hear other students in college talk about like it's a must have that you'll use for the rest of your life. But it's not. I bought this book, and six years out of college I barely ever crack it open. It's packed with information, but it's so general that you can't get any real-world specific information out of it. It's like a restaurant reviewer who can tell you that "New York has some great Italian restaurants" but doesn't give you the name of any of them. You're much better off skipping this book and buying one that's more specific to your particular field. As an example, the mechanical engineer is much better off with Shigley's "Mechanical Engineering Design".

                                          Book Description

Nearly 430 million acres of forests in the United States are privately owned, but the viability, and indeed the very existence, of these forests is increasingly threatened by population growth, sprawling urbanization, and patchwork development. Scientists, policymakers, and community leaders have begun to recognize the vital role of private forests in providing society with essential goods and services, from sustainable timber supplies to clean water. Yet despite the tremendous economic and ecological importance of private forests, information about their status and strategies for their protection have been in short supply.

America's Private Forests addresses that shortcoming, presenting extensive data gathered from diverse sources and offering a concise overview of the current status of privately owned forests in the United States. As well as describing the state of private forests, the book sets forth detailed information on a wide range of approaches to conservation along with an action agenda for implementing those strategies likely to be most effective. The book:

Based on extensive research of existing literature as well as interviews and consultation with leading forestry and conservation experts, America's Private Forests is a unique sourcebook that offers a solid basis for discussion of threats to private forests along with an invaluable compendium of potential solutions. It will serve as an invaluable reference for all those working to conserve and steward forest resources, including forest owners and their consultants, conservation organizations, and agency personnel, as well as researchers and students involved with issues of forestry, biodiversity, land use, and conservation.
